What is Squat Grow?

1 part

Squat Grow lets you grow plants by crouching. Press your sneak key over and over near a crop, tree or anything else growable, and it gets pushed along, no bone meal needed. Yes, you read that right: twerking is farming now.[1]

The mod has a few options you can tune. You can set the effect range (up to 16 blocks) and the effect chance, and you can use a whitelist or blacklist to choose which blocks are affected. There is also an OPMode: when it is enabled, you only need to hold shift and every valid block in range is affected. The pack runs Squat Grow 21.1.4 for Minecraft 1.21.1. The sources don't show which config values the pack uses, so check the config files in your instance rather than assuming the mod defaults.[1][2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book brings the mod up in the "Getting Started" chapter, in the "Main Questline" group (chapter 4 of 31 in the book). It isn't a quest of its own. It shows up in the text of "Food and Farming" quest, which asks you for an Iron Hoe and Wheat Seeds.[3]

That quest comes after "Proper Materials". It tells you that you can Squat Grow your crops: hold a hoe and spam crouch to grow nearby crops. The chapter has 57 quests, but the text of 35 of them isn't available here, so check the quest book itself for anything that follows. The mod is not on the ATM Star quest path.[3]

How do you get started with Squat Grow?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Squat Grow is different from most mods you'll meet in this pack: there's nothing to craft before you can use it. You don't build a machine or make a special tool. You just crouch near a plant.[1]

Step by step

  1. Plant something growable, such as a crop or a tree sapling. The mod's description says it works on crops, trees and anything else that's growable.[1]
  2. Stand near the plant and press your sneak key repeatedly. Each crouch can help the plant grow, so keep tapping until you're happy with how far along it is.[1]
  3. Repeat for every plant you want to speed up, and skip the bone meal. The mod describes itself as a replacement for it.[1]

What you can tweak

The mod has several options, which the pack may change. You can set the effect range (up to 16 blocks) and the effect chance. You can also choose which plants are affected, by registry name or by tag, and use either a whitelist or a blacklist.[1]

There is also an optional OPMode. When it's enabled, you only need to hold shift and every valid block in range is affected. The author says this started as an accident and was then made a config option.[1]

Tip: If crouching near a plant seems to do less than you expect, the pack's range, chance or plant lists may differ from the mod's description. Treat the numbers here as the mod's own limits, not as this pack's settings.[1]

Unverified The pack's actual config values for Squat Grow (effect range, effect chance, whitelist or blacklist contents, and whether OPMode is on) could not be confirmed from the available sources. No crafting recipes or quests for this mod were found either, so there are no items to make first.

How does Squat Grow work?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Squat Grow is a very simple mod. There are no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids to set up. You crouch (squat, or twerk if you prefer) near a plant, and the plant grows. The project page says plants grow twice as fast with the mod, so you can leave the bonemeal at home.[1]

How you use it

Press your sneak key repeatedly until the plant has grown as much as you want. It works on crops, trees and anything else that's growable.[1]

What the mod can be configured to do

According to the mod's project page, these are the options it offers. They describe the mod in general, not necessarily the values this pack uses.[1]

  • Effect range: you can change how far from you the effect reaches, up to 16 blocks.[1]
  • Effect chance: you can change how likely each affected plant is to grow.[1]
  • Whitelist or blacklist: you can limit which blocks are affected, either by the plant's registry name or by tags.[1]
  • OPMode: if it is enabled, you only need to hold shift and all valid blocks in range are affected. The author says this started as an accident and was kept as a config option.[1]
Tip: If you have several plants in range, one crouch press can affect more than one of them. Stand near your crop field or saplings and tap sneak instead of walking up to each plant.[1]

Unverified The pack's actual range, chance, whitelist or blacklist and OPMode settings could not be confirmed from the available sources, so the defaults and limits above should not be treated as this pack's values. The pack's own recipes and quests for this mod are also unconfirmed.

How do you progress through Squat Grow?

2 parts

There is no tier ladder for Squat Grow in this pack. The only thing the pack's quest book says about it is a single line in one quest, so this section is short and sticks to what the book actually tells you.[3]

Where it shows up in the quest book

Squat Grow is mentioned in "Food and Farming" quest, in the Getting Started chapter of the Main Questline group (chapter 4 of 31 in the book). The quest asks you to hand in an Iron Hoe and some Wheat Seeds.[3]

The quest text says the pack lets you Squat Grow your crops. While you hold a hoe, you can spam crouch to grow nearby crops.[3]

What comes before it

"Food and Farming" quest unlocks after "Proper Materials" quest, which asks for an iron ingot. That quest in turn follows the end of each of the three resource paths: "Clusters of Creation" quest (Crystalmancy), "Essential Waters" quest (Cultivation) and "The Old Ways" quest (Prospecting).[3]

Once you have iron, Food and Farming is one of many quests that open up at the same time, so you can pick it up whenever you want to start a farm.[3]

Tip: The quest suggests punching grass to get different types of seeds, then using a hoe to till ground near water for farmland. Plant your seeds there and crouch next to them while holding your hoe.[3]

Unverified The sources do not say whether different hoes, crops or crouch counts change how Squat Grow behaves, and they give no recipes, config values or upgrade tiers for it. Treat any such details as unconfirmed.

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Squat Grow?

2 parts

Squat Grow only shows up in one quest in the pack's quest book: "Food and Farming" quest. It sits in the Getting Started chapter, in the Main Questline group (chapter 4 of 31 in the book).[3]

Food and Farming

The quest asks you to hand in an Iron Hoe and some Wheat Seeds. Its text covers the basics of starting a farm: punch grass to get different seeds, then use a hoe to till the ground near water into farmland and plant them.[3]

The quest then tells you that the pack lets you Squat Grow your crops. Hold a hoe in your hand and spam crouch to grow nearby crops.[3]

Tip: You don't need to wait for the quest to use this. The quest only tells you about the hoe-and-crouch trick, so grab any hoe, stand near your crops and start crouching.[3]

Where it sits in the order

"Food and Farming" quest comes after "Proper Materials" quest, which is itself unlocked by "Clusters of Creation" quest, "Essential Waters" quest and "The Old Ways" quest. In other words, you reach it once you have picked a resource path and gotten your first iron.[3]

It is one of several quests that open at the same time after Proper Materials, alongside "Sky Village Materials" quest, "Gateway of the Hellish Fortress" quest and "The Start of Power" quest. You can do them in any order.[3]

What changed in Squat Grow between versions?

2 parts

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Squat Grow 21.1.4+mc1.21.1, and the mod was already in the pack as of 1.0.3 or earlier. I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelog.[2][4]

Changes for Minecraft 1.21 and up

  • 21.1.4: Added Sable support, so squat grow works when you are in a sub-level. This is the version your pack uses.[2][4]
  • 21.1.1: Added a key binding to turn the squat to grow feature on and off. The default key is U, and you can change it in the controls menu.[4]
  • 21.01.0: Updated the mod to 1.21.1.[4]
  • 21.0.3: Updated the NeoForge and Fabric builds and added short grass to the mod's default config. That is the mod's default, so check your own config if you want the pack's value.[4]
  • 21.0.2 and 21.0.1: Fixed a NeoForge version issue and a NeoForge crash.[4]
  • 21.0.0: Ported the mod to 1.21.[4]
Tip: If you keep triggering squat grow by accident while building, the toggle key added in 21.1.1 lets you switch it off. It defaults to U.[4]

Older releases

  • 6.0.0 and 6.0.1: Ported to 1.20.4, then updated the modloader versions.[4]
  • 5.2.0: Added an action where you hold a grass block in your offhand to quickly squat and convert dirt to grass. Most of the mod was rewritten to be more robust and extendable, and another crash that could disconnect clients or crash single player was fixed.[4]
  • 5.1.1: Fixed world crashes when using mods like canary.[4]
  • 5.1.0: Now built for NeoForge instead of Forge, and the code was refactored. Added support for AE2 growth acceleratable blocks, plus a multiplier config option for sugarcane and AE2.[4]
  • 5.0.4 and 5.0.3: Better sugar cane chances, and a config option requiring a hoe to be held.[4]
  • 3.0.0: Ported to architectury, which gave the mod both Forge and Fabric versions.[4]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as squatgrow, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
