What is Pylons?

2 parts

Pylons is a small magic-block mod, and this pack runs version 5.4.2. It has been in the pack since version 1.0.3 or earlier. Each Pylon is a single block that does one job for you: keep players out, stop certain mobs spawning, or harvest a farm.[1][2]

What the Pylons do

  • Expulsion Pylon: made for servers, it expels other players from the chunk it sits in. You can whitelist players with a Player Filter, and OPs are always whitelisted.[1]
  • Harvester Pylon: harvests crops in a configurable radius around it and outputs to an inventory above. The mod page gives the range as 3x3 to 9x9. You place it in the water block of the farm.[1]
  • Interdiction Pylon: blocks the spawns of the mobs you choose in a chunk range. You right-click a mob with a Mob Filter, then add the filter to the pylon.[1]
  • Infusion Pylon: lets you apply potion effects to yourself from any distance, using activated Potion Filters. The quest data I have doesn't show a quest for it.[1][3]
Tip: The Harvester Pylon needs a hoe in its inventory, and the hoe loses durability each time the pylon collects. Replace it when needed. The quest book also says the pylon shuts down when its inventory is full or the tool breaks.[1][3]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book covers three Pylons in the "Logistics" chapter. That is chapter 9 of 31, in the group "Resources & Logistics". The chapter opens with the General Logistics quest, which says you'll find most of the ways to move items, energy and fluids here. Most of the chapter is other transport mods such as Pipez, Mekanism, EnderIO, LaserIO and Modular Routers.[3]

The three Pylon quests are "Expulsion Pylon" quest, "Interdiction Pylon" quest and "Harvester Pylon" quest. In the quest data I have, none of them lists a prerequisite quest, unlike the follow-up quests for Pipez, Mekanism or LaserIO. Of the chapter's 57 quests, 30 aren't shown to me, so check the quest book itself for anything else about Pylons.[3]

How do you get started with Pylons?

3 parts

The pack's quest book covers three Pylons in the Logistics chapter (the Resources & Logistics group, chapter 9 of 31): "Harvester Pylon" quest, "Interdiction Pylon" quest and "Expulsion Pylon" quest. Here is the order I'd make them in, and why.[3]

First: Harvester Pylon, to automate your first farm

Start with the Harvester Pylon. The quest book calls it one of the most useful Pylons for managing farms. It harvests plants in a configurable area around it, from 3x3 to 9x9 blocks, and outputs to an inventory above it. It also works without creating item entities in the world, which is great for servers.[3][4]

  1. Place the Pylon in the center of your farm and waterlog it.[3]
  2. Open the interface, put a Hoe inside, and adjust the radius in the top right.[3]
  3. Place an inventory on top of the Pylon so it has somewhere to put the collected items.[3]

The Hoe loses 1 durability on every harvest, and the Pylon shuts down when the inventory is full or the tool breaks, so check on it. That tool requirement is on in the pack (harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresTool), and the power option harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower is off. The delay between harvest attempts, harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay, is 60 ticks.[3][4][5]

Watch out: harvester_pylon.harvesterCanBeAutomated is false in this pack, so don't plan on piping tools into the Harvester Pylon to automate it.[5]

Second: Interdiction Pylon, to control what spawns

Next, the Interdiction Pylon stops chosen mobs from spawning in a chunk range around it, from 1x1 to 5x5 chunks. The quest book suggests it for specific natural mob farms, like a Wither Skeleton farm in a Nether Fortress. It needs a Mob Filter.[3][4]

The pack changed the Mob Filter recipe, so use this one.

Right-click the mob you want to stop with the filter, then add the filter to the Pylon.[1][3]

The Lifeless Filter works differently. It blocks all mobs but only natural spawns, with a range of 25x25 chunks, and it disables other mob filters.[4]

Third: Expulsion Pylon, for servers and shared worlds

The Expulsion Pylon pushes back players and stops them entering a set radius around it. It is intended for servers. You choose who is allowed in with a Player Filter.[1][3]

The pack changed the Player Filter recipe too.

OPs are automatically whitelisted. This pack has general.teamSupportEnabled set to true, so team members are whitelisted automatically if a compatible team mod is installed.[4][5]

expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonMaxRadius is 2, which is a 5x5 chunk diameter. expulsion_pylon.expulsionAllowedDimensions only lists the Overworld, and expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonCanExplode is false, so explosions can't destroy it.[5]

How does Pylons work?

5 parts

Pylons are placed blocks that each do one job over an area around them. The Expulsion, Interdiction and Protection Pylons work over a chunk range from 1x1 to 5x5, while the Harvester Pylon works over a block range from 3x3 to 9x9. Every pylon can be toggled automatically with redstone.[4]

Watch out: A pylon needs an owner to run. If the owner can't be found, the screen tells you "Owner not found. Pylon disabled."[4]

Expulsion Pylon

The Expulsion Pylon expels other players from the chunk range you select, from 1x1 to 5x5 chunks. You whitelist players by adding a Player Filter, which you right-click on a player to select them. OPs are whitelisted automatically, and so are team members when team support is enabled.[4]

In this pack team support is on (general.teamSupportEnabled). It only does anything if a compatible team mod such as FTB Teams or Argonauts is installed.[5]

The pack limits how far it reaches. The max radius is 2 (expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonMaxRadius), which doesn't count the centre chunk, so the biggest area is 5x5 chunks. It is only allowed in the overworld (expulsion_pylon.expulsionAllowedDimensions), and explosions can't destroy it (expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonCanExplode is false). It also refuses to work near world spawn, controlled by expulsion_pylon.expulsionWorldSpawnRadius, which is 1 here. That option only takes effect if it is larger than the world spawn radius.[5]

The screen warns you if you are too close to world spawn or in a disabled dimension. The Player Filter recipe was changed by the pack, so use this one:[4][6]

Interdiction Pylon

The Interdiction Pylon stops natural and forced spawns of the mobs you pick, within a chunk range from 1x1 to 5x5. You right-click a mob with a Mob Filter to select it, then add the filter to the pylon to block that mob.[1][4]

The Lifeless Filter works differently. It blocks all mobs, but only natural spawns, and it raises the range to 25x25 chunks. It also disables any other mob filters in the pylon.[4]

The pack changed the Mob Filter recipe. The Lifeless Filter is as the mod made it.[6]

Protection Pylon

The Protection Pylon stops its owner from breaking blocks or killing mobs inside the chunk range you select, from 1x1 to 5x5. You choose what to protect with Mob Filters and Block Filter items. A Block Filter is set by right-clicking a block.[4]

Harvester Pylon

The Harvester Pylon harvests crops around it and outputs them to an inventory placed directly above it. Put the pylon inside the water block of the farm, or level with the crops. If there is no inventory above, the screen says "Place inventory above pylon", and it also tells you when the inventory is full.[4]

In this pack the harvester needs a hoe in the pylon (harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresTool is true). Each harvest uses 1 durability, unless the hoe is unbreakable. Unbreaking and other durability enchants are supported. It tries to harvest every 60 ticks (harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay).[4][5]

You can switch to power instead of durability with harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower, which is false in this pack. If it is enabled, the tool requirement is dropped and each block harvested costs RF. The pack's values are a cost of 5 RF per block (harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerCost) and a buffer of 1,000 (harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerBuffer). The buffer should stay larger than the cost per block times 80.[5]

Watch out: Piping tools into the harvester is off in this pack (harvester_pylon.harvesterCanBeAutomated is false). The config notes that unbreakable tools are required for full automation by default.[5]

Infusion Pylon

The Infusion Pylon applies effects to you from any distance, using activated Potion Filters. To activate a filter, get a potion effect on yourself, then right-click with the filter in hand to extract it. By default this takes all the remaining duration from you. Right-clicking again with the same effect active adds to the filter's progress.[1][4]

The pack keeps the defaults. A filter can only extract effects of at least 60 seconds (infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration), and it needs 3,600 seconds, which is 1 hour, before it works (infusion_pylon.infusionRequiredDuration). That equals 7.5 vanilla extended potions.[5]

If you have two filters with the same effect, you can combine them: hold one in each hand and right-click. The duration from the off hand filter will be added to the filter in your main hand.[1][4]

Once active, the pylon applies the effect for up to 20 seconds at a time, refreshed every 60 ticks (infusion_pylon.infusionAppliedDuration). The maximum potency is 3 (infusion_pylon.infusionMaximumPotency). It is 0-indexed, so Resistance V would be potency 4.[5]

The pylon chunkloads itself while its owner is online (infusion_pylon.infusionChunkloads is true), limited to one pylon per player. The allowed effects list (infusion_pylon.infusionAllowedEffects) and the denied list (infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects) are both empty here, so all effects are allowed except those banned by the pylons:infusion_banned tag.[5]

How do you progress through Pylons?

4 parts

Pylons doesn't have a long tier ladder in this pack. Instead you get three pylons, each with its own quest and its own recipe, plus filters that two of them use. The pack's quest book puts all of them in the Logistics chapter.[3][6]

Where the quests sit

Logistics is chapter 9 of 31 in the book, in the group "Resources & Logistics". The pylon quests share that chapter with the pipe, cable and router mods.[3]

Setting up the Harvester Pylon

Place the Harvester Pylon in the middle of your farm and waterlog it. Open its interface, put a Hoe inside and set the radius in the top right. Then put an inventory on top of the pylon for the collected items.[3]

The Hoe loses durability every time the pylon collects, so keep an eye on it. The pylon shuts down when its inventory is full or the tool breaks. It also works without creating item entities in the world, which the quest says makes it great for servers.[3]

Crafting each step

The pylons use the mod's own recipes. The pack changed two filter recipes, the Mob Filter and the Player Filter, so check the recipe blocks below instead of relying on what you remember from the mod.[6]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Pylons?

2 parts

Pylons only show up in one place in the quest book: the Logistics chapter. It sits in the Resources & Logistics group, as chapter 9 of 31, and has 57 quests. The chapter's intro quest "General Logistics" quest describes it as covering most of the ways to handle transferring items, energy, fluids, and more. The Pylons are three quests among all the pipes and routers.[3]

None of the three Pylon quests lists another quest that must come before it, so you can do them in any order. Here they are in the order the chapter lists them.[3]

The three Pylon quests

  1. "Expulsion Pylon" quest asks you to make an Expulsion Pylon and a Player Filter. The quest says this Pylon pushes back players and stops them from entering a set radius around it, and the Player Filters decide which players are allowed in. It's a good one if you want other players kept away from your stuff.[3]
  2. "Interdiction Pylon" quest asks for an Interdiction Pylon and a Mob Filter. The Pylon uses Mob Filters to control which mobs can spawn inside its radius. You craft a Mob Filter and use it on the mob you want to stop spawning. The quest suggests it for specific natural mob farms, like a Wither Skeleton farm in a Nether Fortress.[3]
  3. "Harvester Pylon" quest asks for a Harvester Pylon. It automatically collects and harvests plants within a configurable radius around it.[3]

Setting up the Harvester Pylon

The quest says the Harvester Pylon works without creating item entities in the world when it harvests, and that it shuts down when its inventory is full or its tool breaks. It describes this as a good fit for servers.[3]

  1. Place the Pylon in the center of your farm and waterlog it.[3]
  2. Open the interface and put a Hoe inside for it to work with.[3]
  3. Adjust the radius you want it to cover in the top right of the interface.[3]
  4. Place an inventory on top of the Pylon for it to output the collected items into.[3]
Tip: The Hoe loses durability each time the Harvester Pylon collects, so check it and replace it when needed. The Pylon shuts down when the tool breaks.[3]

Which Pylons config options matter?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Everything for Pylons lives in one file, general.teamSupportEnabled and its siblings in config/pylons-server.toml. Below are the options you're most likely to touch, with the exact values this pack uses. Every numeric option in the file that is labelled with a mod default is set to that default here, so the pack hasn't changed those numbers.[7]

Harvester Pylon

The Harvester Pylon is where most of the interesting options are. By default it needs a hoe in its inventory, and that's how this pack runs it.[1][7]

Infusion Pylon

Expulsion Pylon

Watch out: The Expulsion Pylon is only allowed to operate in the Overworld in this pack, so don't count on it to protect a base in another dimension.[7]

Teams

general.teamSupportEnabled is true, so team support is active whenever a compatible mod such as FTB Teams or Argonauts is installed.[7]

What changed in Pylons between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships Pylons 5.4.2. The mod has been in the pack since FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.0.3 or earlier, so it's a long-time resident.[2]

Pylons 5.4.2

The one change I can confirm from the mod's changelog is a refactor of the Cobblemon compatibility. It fixes a bug where a berry bush would instantly reset to fully grown after you harvested it, caused by the growth timer. Since the pack uses this exact version, that fix is part of what you get.[2][8]

There are no pack changelog entries for Pylons, so I can't tell you how the mod changed between individual pack releases.[2]
