What is Simply Light?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.16 guide

Simply Light is in the pack at version 1.4.6+1.21-b53 (file simplylight-1.4.6+1.21-b53.jar). It has been part of the pack since version 0.32 or earlier, so it isn't a recent addition.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what Simply Light adds, who it is aimed at, or how it fits into the pack's progression. I also have no confirmed recipes, config options or quests for it, and no guidebook, so I'm not guessing at any of that. I'll fill this in once there is something to back it up.

How do you get started with Simply Light?

5 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

This mod adds lighting blocks, and the recipes shown here are all crafting recipes. Here is the order I'd go in, starting with the light bulb.[2]

First: Simple Light Bulb

Start with the Simple Light Bulb. One craft gives you 8 of them.[2]

Next: Illuminant Block

Next, make the Illuminant Block. This craft gives you 4 blocks, and the mod describes it as a simple light block.[2][3]

If you want the inverted version, Illuminant Block(Inverted), you can craft it directly for 4 blocks, or turn an Illuminant Block into it with a single-item shapeless recipe.[2]

The reverse swap, back to the normal block, is also a one-item recipe.[2]

Then: Dynamic Edge Light

The Dynamic Edge Light (bottom) is great for hallways. One craft makes 6. When you place it, it morphs to follow the blocks around it, and that shape stays afterward. That means you can shape it using temporary blocks.[2][3]

There is also a top version, Dynamic Edge Light (top), and you can swap between the two with shapeless recipes.[2]

Colors

Once you have edge lights, you can recolor them with a dye recipe that makes 8 per craft, for example Dynamic Blue Edge Light (bottom).[2]

Finally: fixtures, rods and columns

When you want more decorative options, the mod also has the Illuminant Fixture, which makes 6 per craft, and the Illuminant Rod, which makes 8.[2]

How does Simply Light work?

3 parts

Simply Light is a lighting mod, so the interesting part is how the blocks behave when you place and swap them. The sources for this mod cover placement behaviour and the in-pack crafting conversions, so that is what this section covers.[3][4]

Dynamic edge lights

The Dynamic Edge Light (bottom) follows the walls around it, which makes it great for hallways. It morphs to the blocks present around it at the moment you place it, and that shape then persists. That means you can build a shape with temporary blocks, place the light, and remove the blocks afterwards.[3]

There is a bottom and a top version. In this pack you can swap between them in the crafting grid with a single item each way.[3][4]

Recipe id: simplylight:edge_light_top

Bottom to top: one bottom light becomes one top light.

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: simplylight:edge_light_bottom_from_top

Top back to bottom: one top light becomes one bottom light.

Colored versions exist too. The pack has dye recipes for the colors, for example Dynamic Blue Edge Light (bottom), and each one makes 8 lights at a time and accepts any edge light as the base.[3][4]

Illuminant blocks and the Inverted variant

The Illuminant Block is described as a simple light block that activates, while the Illuminant Block(Inverted) (Inverted) is described as one that deactivates instead.[3]

You do not need to craft the Inverted version from scratch if you already have the normal one. In this pack, a shapeless recipe converts one into the other, and the colored blocks such as the black one have the same toggle in both directions.[4]

Placement rules for the smaller lights

Slabs can be turned into panels in this pack. One colored slab gives 6 panels of the same color.[4]

How do you progress through Simply Light?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB StoneBlock 4 1.22.0 guide

Every recipe in the sources for this mod is a shaped or shapeless crafting recipe from the mod itself. So "progression" here means which pieces you build first and which ones build on them. In total there are 160 shaped and 50 shapeless recipes.[5]

The basic lights

These are the starting pieces: the Simple Light Bulb, the Illuminant Rod, the Dynamic Edge Light (bottom), the Illuminant Slab and the Illuminant Fixture. The recipes for the bulb, the edge light and the rod are shown below.[5]

Illuminant Blocks

The Illuminant Block makes 4 per craft, and so does the inverted Illuminant Block(Inverted). A one-item shapeless recipe swaps a block and its inverted version in either direction, so you can flip one without crafting it from scratch.[5]

Columns, panels and swaps

The Illuminant Column makes 2 per craft and uses one of the mod's own lamps as an ingredient. Panels come from slabs: one slab gives 6 Illuminant Panel pieces, and the colored slabs have matching split recipes.[5]

Edge lights also have a top version. A shapeless recipe turns the bottom Dynamic Edge Light (bottom) into the Dynamic Edge Light (top), and another turns it back.[5]

Color

Dyeing is the last stage. Each dye recipe takes an existing edge light and gives 8 colored ones per craft. The recipes exist for both the bottom and top edge lights, for example Dynamic Blue Edge Light (bottom) and Dynamic Black Edge Light (top). The loot tables for the colored edge lights, such as black and blue, drop the matching item when the block is broken.[5][6][7]

Tip: A dye recipe accepts any edge light of its kind as the ingredient, so you can recolor lights you already have instead of crafting new ones from the base recipe.[5]
