What is RFTools Utility?
3 parts
RFTools Utility is the 1.14+ version of the original RFTools, a collection of general-purpose machines that don't fit a more specific category. This pack includes version 1.21-7.0.12. The mod is meant to be used alongside RFTools Power, and it depends on RFTools Base and McJtyLib.[1][2]
What it adds
- Automatic crafting, with Crafter Tier 1, Crafter Tier 2 and Crafter Tier 3.[1][3]
- The environmental controller, found in the pack as Environmental Controller.[1][3]
- Logic blocks such as the Timer, Sequencer, Counter and Sensor.[1][3]
- Information screens, built from the Screen, the Screen Controller and a range of screen modules, for example the Energy Screen Module and Clock Screen Module.[1][3]
- A spawner system, which includes the Spawner, the Syringe and the Matter Beamer.[1][3]
- A teleportation system built around the Matter Transmitter, Matter Receiver and Dialing Device, plus the Charged Porter and Advanced Charged Porter.[1][3]
The mod's description also lists a multitank. I can't confirm from the sources how that appears in this pack, so I won't cover it here.[1]
Who it's for
It suits you if you want to automate crafting, build monitoring screens and redstone logic, or set up teleportation and mob spawning. If you already use RFTools Power, this is the companion mod it is designed to work with.[1]
Where it fits in the pack
The pack has a dedicated "rftools_series" quest chapter for this mod. Every quest in it unlocks after the same earlier quest, so you can pick them in any order. They cover crafters ("Powered Crafters" quest), screens ("Sensational Screens" quest), logic blocks ("Redstone Potpourri" quest), the environmental controller ("Environmental Controller" quest) and the spawner system ("Spawner" quest).[3]
Teleportation is split across several quests. These cover the transmitter and dialing device ("Dialing Destinations" quest), the receiver ("Targeted Teleports" quest), the booster and destination analyzer ("Safety Steps" quest) and the charged porters ("Personal 'Porting" quest). There are also redstone quests for the transmitter and receiver ("Wireless Redstone" quest) and for the Redstone Module ("Tablet Control" quest).[3]
Unverified No in-jar guidebook was found for this mod, and the sources don't show any pack-specific recipe or config changes. How early or late in a typical playthrough you should reach these machines is also unconfirmed.
How do you get started with RFTools Utility?
5 parts
RFTools Utility is a grab bag of general tools: an automatic crafter, logic blocks, information screens, a spawner system, a multitank and a teleportation system. It depends on RFTools Base, which supplies the machine bases and machine frames used in most of the recipes below.[1][4]
In this pack, every quest in the RFTools series chapter unlocks after the same earlier quest. You can pick your own order, but here is the one I would go in.[3]
Step one: the Crafter line
Start with the Crafter Tier 1. The pack has a quest that asks for all three crafter tiers. "Powered Crafters" quest[3]

The upgrades work differently from a normal craft. The Crafter Tier 2 and Crafter Tier 3 recipes each take the previous tier as an ingredient and copy its components over, so build them in order.[4]
Step two: a screen to watch your base
Next, set up information screens. The screen quest wants a Screen Controller, a Screen and at least one screen module. "Sensational Screens" quest The Text Screen Module is one of the modules the quest accepts, and its recipe is below.[3][4]

The Machine Information Screen Module is the one for monitoring machines. Sneak right-click a supported block to set its target. It only works with machines that support this system.[5]
Step three: teleportation
The teleport quests are split up. One asks for a Dialing Device and a Matter Transmitter, and another asks for a Matter Receiver. "Dialing Destinations" quest "Targeted Teleports" quest[3]

After that, the Matter Booster and Destination Analyzer have their own quest. "Safety Steps" quest[3]
Step four: wireless redstone
For wireless redstone, the quest asks for a Redstone Transmitter and a Redstone Receiver. "Wireless Redstone" quest The Redstone Module module is used in the Tablet to view and control wireless redstone. Right-click a transmitter or receiver with it to add that channel.[3][5]

How does RFTools Utility work?
4 parts
RFTools Utility is a grab-bag mod: an automatic crafter, an environmental controller, logic blocks, information screens, a spawner system, a multitank and a teleportation system. The sources for this pack spell out the numbers for the crafter, the environmental controller and the screens, so that is what this section covers in depth.[1]
Automatic crafter
The Crafter Tier 1 is the mod's automatic crafter. Its power numbers are in the server config, and the crafter options listed below match the mod defaults in this pack.[1][4][6]

- Storage: it holds up to 50,000 RF (crafter.crafterMaxRF).[6]
- Input rate: it can receive 500 RF per tick (crafter.crafterRFPerTick).[6]
- Cost: each crafting operation uses 100 RF (crafter.rfPerOperation).[6]
- Fast mode: it does 5 operations at once (crafter.speedOperations).[6]
Environmental controller
The Environmental Controller applies effects through modules. The pack changed its recipe, so don't rely on the mod's default one.[4][6]
Crafting Shaped

Recipe id: rftoolsutility:environmental_controller
The controller stores up to 500,000 RF and can receive 20,000 RF per tick. While active it consumes a minimum of 5 RF per tick. These are the mod defaults, unchanged by the pack. The settings are environmental.environmentalMaxRF, environmental.environmentalRFPerTick and environmental.environmentalMinRFUsage.[6]
Every module has its own cost in RF per tick per block, so bigger areas cost more. If you use the controller on mobs, the power usage is multiplied by 2 (environmental.mobsPowerMultiplier). Some examples from the config:[6]
- Haste Module: 0.001, while Haste+ Module costs 0.003.[4][6]
- Featherfalling Module: 0.001, while Featherfalling+ Module costs 0.003.[4][6]
- Flight: 0.004.[6]
- Regeneration: 0.0015, and the plus version costs 0.0045.[6]
- Speed, night vision, glowing, peaceful, saturation and water breathing: 0.001 each at base level. The speed plus and saturation plus modules cost 0.003.[6]
The blindness, poison, slowness and weakness modules are switched off for players in this pack. Their availability options are set to false, and the config describes each one as making the module work on players. You can find them at environmental.blindnessAvailable, environmental.poisonAvailable, environmental.slownessAvailable and environmental.weaknessAvailable.[6]

The plus module is built from the base Haste Module plus the ModulePlus Template.
Information screens
Screens show information through modules. The screen controller holds up to 60,000 RF (screen.screenControllerMaxRF). Each module drains RF per tick per block, and the pack keeps the mod defaults:[6]
- Button module: 9 RF (screen.buttonRFPerTick).[6]
- Dimension module: 6 RF (screen.dimensionRFPerTick).[6]
- Computer, counter, energy, fluid, itemstack, machine information and redstone modules: 4 RF each (for example screen.energyRFPerTick).[6]
- Clock module: 1 RF (screen.clockRFPerTick).[6]
The Machine Information Screen Module lets a screen monitor a machine, but only machines that support this system. Sneak right-click a supported block to set the module's target. A separate redstone information module is used in the Tablet to view and control wireless redstone, and you add a channel by right-clicking a redstone transmitter or receiver.[5]
On the client side, the pack uses the vanilla screen font, because screen.useTruetype is false. If you turn TrueType on, the default font is rftoolsutility:ubuntu at size 40 (screen.fontName, screen.fontSize). The option screen.forceNoTruetype disables TrueType in all cases if it causes problems.[7]
Counter
The pack changed the recipe for the Counter, so use this one:[4]

How do you progress through RFTools Utility?
4 parts
RFTools Utility has its own quest chapter in the pack, called rftools_series. Every quest in it unlocks from the same earlier quest, so the chapter is a set of parallel goals rather than a single line. The quests are untitled, so here they are by what they ask for.[3]
What the quests ask for
- "Dialing Destinations" quest wants a Dialing Device and a Matter Transmitter. "Targeted Teleports" quest wants a Matter Receiver.[3]
- "Safety Steps" quest asks for a Matter Booster and a Destination Analyzer.[3]
- "Personal 'Porting" quest asks for both the Charged Porter and the Advanced Charged Porter.[3]
- "Redstone Potpourri" quest accepts any one of Wire, Analog, Counter, Digit, Inventory Checker, Sensor, Sequencer, Logic or Timer.[3]
- "Wireless Redstone" quest wants a Redstone Receiver and a Redstone Transmitter. "Tablet Control" quest wants the Tablet (empty) and the Redstone Module.[3]
- "Sensational Screens" quest is the screen quest: a Screen Controller, a Screen, and any one screen module from a list that includes the Text Screen Module, Energy Screen Module and Clock Screen Module.[3]
- "Powered Crafters" quest asks for all three crafters: Crafter Tier 1, Crafter Tier 2 and Crafter Tier 3.[3]
- "Spawner" quest wants a Spawner, a Matter Beamer and a Syringe. "Environmental Controller" quest wants the Environmental Controller and the Module Template.[3]
Tiers that build on each other
Some machines are true upgrade chains, where each tier is made from the one before it. The crafters are the clearest case: Tier 1 comes first, then Tier 2, then Tier 3.[4]

Modules and Plus upgrades
Player-effect modules split into two levels by template. Modules such as Haste Module, Regeneration Module and Speed Module use the Module Template. Stronger ones such as Flight Module, Peaceful Module, Noteleport Module and Waterbreathing Module use the ModulePlus Template instead.[4]

The Plus versions of effect modules, such as Haste+ Module and Regeneration+ Module, are made from the basic module together with a ModulePlus Template. Screen modules follow a similar pattern: Counter Plus Screen Module, Energy Plus Screen Module, Fluid Plus Screen Module and Inventory Plus Screen Module are each made from their basic screen module.[4]
Where the pack changes things
The recipes for the Counter and the Environmental Controller are changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. Here are the in-pack versions.[4]

How does RFTools Utility work with other mods?
4 parts
RFTools Utility doesn't add much cross-mod crafting of its own. Its recipes mostly lean on vanilla Minecraft items and on RFTools Base, which the mod depends on. The mod page also says it is meant to be used together with RFTools Power, and that it needs McJtyLib. This section covers what the pack's recipes and quests actually show.[1][4]
RFTools Base is the backbone
Nearly every machine here starts from an RFTools Base part. Logic and sensing blocks such as Analog, Logic, Sensor, Timer and Screen use Machine Base. Bigger machines such as Crafter Tier 1, Spawner, Tank and the teleport blocks use Machine Frame.[4]
Those base parts get combined with vanilla items. For example, the comparator turns up in several logic blocks, and the clock turns up in the timer and counter. The spawner also pulls in rotten flesh.[4]
Player modules and upgrades
The module chain is also tied to RFTools Base, which supplies the Dimensional Shard, the Infused Diamond and the Infused Enderpearl. The recipes below show how Module Template and ModulePlus Template use them.[4]

Each upgraded module then adds one vanilla item. Here is what the sources show:[4]
- Featherfalling+ Module uses a Feather.[4]
- Haste+ Module uses Redstone.[4]
- Regeneration+ Module uses a Golden Apple.[4]
- Saturation+ Module uses Rotten Flesh.[4]
- Speed+ Module uses a Powered Rail.[4]
- Flight Module uses a Ghast Tear.[4]
- Peaceful Module uses an Iron Block.[4]
- Waterbreathing Module uses a Prismarine Shard.[4]
The Flight, Peaceful and Waterbreathing modules all use the Syringe recipe type instead of plain crafting.
Recipes the pack changed
Some recipes are marked as changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from other modpacks. The Counter is among them.[4]

Quests
The RFTools quest chapter follows the same pattern. Quest "Tablet Control" quest asks for the Tablet (empty) alongside the Redstone Module. Quest "Environmental Controller" quest pairs the environmental controller with the module template. The other quests in the chapter cover Utility items such as the crafters, screens, teleport blocks and logic blocks.[3]
Which FTB Skies 2 quests use RFTools Utility?
2 parts
All of the mod's quests in this pack sit in a single chapter, "rftools_series". None of the quests has a title, so below I refer to them by quest ID and describe what each one asks you to obtain.[3]
The order is simple. Every quest in the chapter unlocks after the same earlier quest, so none of them depends on another one in the chapter. Once that parent quest is complete, you can do them in any order. What the parent quest asks for isn't shown in the sources I have.[3]
What each quest asks for
Every task in this chapter is an item task. Where a task lists several items joined by "or", a single item from the list is enough.[3]
- "Dialing Destinations" quest asks for a Dialing Device and a Matter Transmitter.[3]
- "Targeted Teleports" quest asks for a single item, the Matter Receiver.[3]
- "Safety Steps" quest asks for a Matter Booster and a Destination Analyzer.[3]
- "Personal 'Porting" quest asks for a Charged Porter and an Advanced Charged Porter.[3]
- "Spawner" quest asks for a Spawner, a Matter Beamer and a Syringe.[3]
- "Environmental Controller" quest asks for an Environmental Controller and a Module Template.[3]
- "Wireless Redstone" quest asks for a Redstone Receiver and a Redstone Transmitter.[3]
- "Tablet Control" quest asks for an Tablet (empty) and a Redstone Module.[3]
- "Powered Crafters" quest asks for every crafter tier: Crafter Tier 1, Crafter Tier 2 and Crafter Tier 3.[3]
Quests with a choice of items
"Redstone Potpourri" quest is a single task where any one of these items counts: Wire, Analog, Counter, Digit, Inventory Checker, Sensor, Sequencer, Logic or Timer.[3]
"Sensational Screens" quest asks for a Screen Controller, a Screen and one screen module. Any one of these modules works: Text Screen Module, Counter Screen Module, Counter Plus Screen Module, Button Screen Module, Redstone Screen Module, Energy Screen Module, Energy Plus Screen Module, Inventory Screen Module, Inventory Plus Screen Module, Fluid Screen Module, Fluid Plus Screen Module, Machine Information Screen Module or Clock Screen Module.[3]
Which RFTools Utility config options matter?
4 parts
Good news first: in this pack, every RFTools Utility option that reports a mod default is still set to that default. So the numbers below are the mod's own values, not pack changes. Here are the ones you're most likely to care about.[6][7]
Teleportation costs
The teleporter is where most players run into power problems. A local teleport costs teleporter.rfStartTeleportLocal = 5,000 RF to start, plus teleporter.rfStartTeleportDist = 10 RF for every unit of distance. Going to another dimension costs teleporter.rfStartTeleportDim = 100,000 RF, and the distance value isn't used in that case.[6]
- teleporter.rfTeleportPerTick is 500 RF per tick while the teleport is in progress, and the receiving side spends teleporter.rfPerTeleportReceiver = 5,000 RF per teleport.[6]
- The matter transmitter stores up to teleporter.transmitterMaxRF = 200,000 RF and accepts teleporter.transmitterRFPerTick = 1,000 RF per tick. The matter receiver holds teleporter.receiverMaxRF = 100,000 RF.[6]
- Base teleport time is teleporter.timeTeleportBaseLocal = 5 for local trips and teleporter.timeTeleportBaseDim = 50 for other dimensions.[6]
- The dialing device checks for transmitters within teleporter.horizontalDialerRange = 10 horizontally and teleporter.verticalDialerRange = 5 vertically. Dialing costs teleporter.rfPerDial = 1,000 RF, and the Check button costs teleporter.rfPerCheck = 5,000 RF.[6]
- The charged porter holds teleporter.chargedPorterMaxRF = 200,000 RF. The advanced version holds teleporter.advancedChargedPorterMaxRF = 1,000,000 RF, with a speed bonus of teleporter.advancedSpeedBonus = 4. The config notes that teleporting this way uses 50% more RF than a matter transmitter.[6]
The teleport blacklists (teleporter.blacklistedTeleportationSources and teleporter.blacklistedTeleportationDestinations) are empty, so no dimension is blocked. Usage logging (teleporter.logTeleportUsages) is off, and the 'whoosh' message (teleporter.whooshMessage) is on.[6]
Environmental controller
The controller stores up to environmental.environmentalMaxRF = 500,000 RF and accepts environmental.environmentalRFPerTick = 20,000 RF per tick. An active controller always uses at least environmental.environmentalMinRFUsage = 5 RF per tick. When it's used on mobs, power usage is multiplied by environmental.mobsPowerMultiplier = 2.[6]
The harmful modules are switched off for players: environmental.poisonAvailable, environmental.blindnessAvailable, environmental.slownessAvailable and environmental.weaknessAvailable are all false. For comparison, the flight module costs environmental.flightRFPerTick = 0.004 RF per tick per block.[6]
Crafter, screens, tank and spawner
- The automatic crafter holds crafter.crafterMaxRF = 50,000 RF and accepts crafter.crafterRFPerTick = 500 RF per tick. Each crafting operation uses crafter.rfPerOperation = 100 RF, and fast mode does crafter.speedOperations = 5 operations at once.[6]
- The screen controller holds screen.screenControllerMaxRF = 60,000 RF and accepts screen.screenControllerRFPerTick = 1,000 RF per tick.[6]
- Screen module costs are per tick per block. Button is screen.buttonRFPerTick = 9, dimension is screen.dimensionRFPerTick = 6, clock is screen.clockRFPerTick = 1 and text is screen.textRFPerTick = 0. Energy (screen.energyRFPerTick = 4), fluid (screen.fluidRFPerTick = 4) and itemstack (screen.itemstackRFPerTick = 4) each have their own setting.[6]
- screen.screenRefreshTiming is 500. Higher values make screens less accurate but easier on network bandwidth.[6]
- The multitank's tank.maxCapacity is 32,000 mb.[6]
- The spawner needs up to spawner.maxMobInjections = 10 injections for a full mob extraction.[6]
Client display settings
Information screens use the vanilla font here: screen.useTruetype is false and screen.forceNoTruetype is also false. If you turn TrueType on, the font is screen.fontName = rftoolsutility:ubuntu at screen.fontSize = 40. If the TrueType font causes problems, set the force-disable option to true.[7]
What changed in RFTools Utility between versions?
1 part
FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships with RFTools Utility version 1.21-7.0.12 (the file rftoolsutility-1.21-7.0.12.jar). The mod was first included in FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier.[2]
