What is Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

2 parts

Gaze is an expansion addon for Malum, the dark-magic themed mod. It builds on Malum's themes and adds new progression, systems and content for players who want to keep going deeper into the Arcane.[1]

The pack ships Gaze version 1.1.6.1. Keep in mind that the mod is still in active development: some features are unfinished and bugs can happen. It's a fan project for Malum, made with the Malice modpacks in mind, and it's prone to massive overhauls and tone shifts. Expect it to change over time.[1][2]

Who it's for

If you're already playing with Malum and want more to do with it, Gaze is your next step. It extends Malum rather than replacing it, so you'll want to be comfortable with Malum's basics first.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

Gaze shows up in the pack's Malum quest chapter. The first Gaze quest a quest in "?" asks you to hand in an Umbral Spirit and the Veil's Edge. That quest is the gateway, and the three Gaze quests after it all depend on it.[3]

Unverified No in-jar guidebook was found for this mod, so how to obtain the quest items and what each rune does is not confirmed here.

How do you get started with Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

4 parts

Gaze is an addon for Malum, so everything you craft here is built through Malum's own machines. In this pack, the Gaze items you need first are laid out in the Malum quest chapter, and that chapter gives you a clear order to follow. Keep in mind that the addon is still in active development, so features can change.[1][3][4]

First: Veil's Edge

Your first Gaze goal is Veil's Edge. The quest a quest in "?" asks you to hand in an umbral spirit together with the dagger. It is the gate for the rest of the Gaze quests, so make it first. It comes from a Malum spirit infusion recipe.[3][4]

Next: pick up the following quests

Once the dagger quest is done, three quests open up at the same time. You can do them in any order, so start with whichever you like.[3]

Crafting a rune

Each rune is made from a single input through runeworking. The in-game Malum book describes the Rune of Revealing as "the impulse to watch", for example. Here is that one as a reference for how the recipes look.[4][5]

How does Gaze (A Malum Addon) work?

4 parts

Gaze is an expansion addon for Malum that adds new progression, systems and content on top of Malum's own. The project page says it is still in active development, so some features are unfinished and it can change a lot between updates.[1]

How Gaze items are made

Everything Gaze adds in this pack is crafted through Malum's own crafting types, and the recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack recipes. Runes such as Rune of Eir and Rune of Gymir use Malum's runeworking. Weapons such as Veil's Edge, Soul Rapier and Spirit Saber use Malum's spirit infusion.[4]

Spirit infusion also makes the accessories Necklace of Arcane Charge, Ring of Mage Ethics, Ring of Idle Meditation and Sloth Brooch. It makes Encyclopedia Unveiled too.[4]

Rites

Gaze adds a lesser rite for each of Malum's elements (aerial, aqueous, arcane, earthen, infernal, sacred and wicked), plus a corrupt version of each. Their book entries are subtitled things like Manipulating Attraction for the aerial rite, Manipulating the Weather for the aqueous rite and Manipulating the Undead for the wicked rite.[5]

The lore entry for Gaze's rites says they open up a way to pull creatures into traps and items into containers. The in-game text frames it as a solution for collecting and storing the resources that spirit-harvesting contraptions produce.[5]

If you don't want any of this, disableGazeRites turns Gaze rites off entirely. This pack leaves it set to false, so the rites are enabled.[6]

Umbral Spirits and the Veil Dagger

Killing with the Veil's Edge can drop Umbral Spirits. umbralDropEntities is the list of entity ids that can drop them, and players are always on that list. This pack lists only villagers.[4][6]

umbralDropChance sets the drop chance for the listed entities. This pack uses 0.1, which is the mod default, and the allowed range is 0.0 to 1.0. For players the chance is always 100%. In multiplayer, villagers only drop Umbral Spirits if doVillagerUmbralsOnServer is true. This pack sets it to false, and singleplayer is always allowed.[6]

Soul Ward Integrity

integrityRatio controls how much Soul Ward Integrity you get per point of Armour Toughness. This pack uses 5, which matches the mod default, and the allowed range is 1.0 to 10.0.[6]

How do you progress through Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

6 parts

Gaze is a Malum addon, so its progression hangs off Malum's spirit infusion and runeworking. In this pack the quests only cover a small slice of the mod. They sit in the malum chapter and run as one entry point that branches into three follow-ups.[3][4]

First quest: Veil's Edge

The first Gaze quest is a quest in "?". It asks you to hand in an Umbral Spirit and the Veil's Edge. It unlocks after an earlier quest in the same chapter, which is not one of the quests covered here.[3]

Veil's Edge is made with spirit infusion, and the recipe dump lists it as a mod recipe. That means the sources show no pack change to it.[4]

Next: three branches

Once Veil's Edge is done, three quests open up at the same time. You can do them in any order.[3]

The Encyclopedia branch

Encyclopedia Unveiled is a spirit infusion upgrade of Malum's Encyclopedia Esoterica. You craft it from that one book, so keep your Encyclopedia Esoterica for this step.[4]

Spirit Infusion (malum)

The rune branch

The rune quest takes any of these: Rune of Mimir, Rune of Svalinn, Rune of Hodr, Rune of Nott, Rune of Ymir, Rune of Gymir, Rune of Eir or Rune of Fafnir. Each one is made through Malum runeworking from a single input item, so pick whichever input you can get first.[3][4]

The endgame branch

The Splintered World and Replica Artifact Wheel recipes are both spirit infusion crafts. Gather their inputs before you start, because they use some of Malum's later materials. The Splintered World also needs a dragon egg.[4]

Gaze items outside the quests

Several other Gaze items have spirit infusion recipes in the pack, but none of them is a quest task in the chapter covered here: Necklace of Arcane Charge, Ring of Mage Ethics, Ring of Idle Meditation, Seidhr, Sloth Brooch, Soul Rapier, Spirit Saber and Swift Spiral. Their in-pack recipes are shown below.[3][4]

How does Gaze (A Malum Addon) work with other mods?

3 parts

Gaze is an expansion addon for Malum, so nearly everything it connects to in this pack is Malum content. The recipes and quests below show how the mods are tied together.[1][4]

Runeworking

Several Gaze runes are made through Malum's runeworking recipes, and each one starts from a Malum item. For example, Rune of Fafnir comes from Blighted Gunk, and Rune of Nott comes from Void Salts. Rune of Ymir comes from Azure Runewood Sapling. Rune of Svalinn comes from Astral Weave. The Soulwood-themed runes, Rune of Mimir and Rune of Hodr, come from Revealed Soulwood Log and Blighted Soulwood.[4]

Spirit Infusion gear

Gaze's trinkets and weapons are crafted with Malum's spirit infusion. They are built from Malum materials such as Fused Consciousness, Malignant Pewter Plating and Hallowed Gold Ingot. Encyclopedia Unveiled is made from Malum's Encyclopedia Esoterica.[4]

Quests

Gaze items appear in the pack's Malum quest chapter. The Gaze quest that comes first there asks for Veil's Edge together with Umbral Spirit. Quests that follow from it ask for Splintered World and Replica Dharmachakra, for Encyclopedia Unveiled, and for any one of the Gaze runes.[3]

Tip: The rune quest accepts any one rune from its list, including Rune of Gymir and Rune of Eir, so you do not need every rune to complete it.[3]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

2 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

This mod shows up in one quest chapter in this pack: the Malum chapter. It holds four quests, and none of them has a title, so you'll recognise them by their tasks.[7]

Where it starts

The first Gaze quest is a quest in "?". It unlocks after an earlier quest in the chapter, which isn't one of the Gaze quests. It asks you to hand in an Umbral Spirit and a Veil's Edge. Everything else in the Gaze set depends on this quest.[7]

What opens up afterwards

Once you finish that first quest, three more open up side by side. None of them is listed as requiring another, so you can take them in any order.[7]

Tip: The rune quest takes just one of the listed runes, so you can hand in whichever one is easiest for you to get.[7]

Unverified The quest file doesn't list any rewards, descriptions or crafting routes for these items, so those aren't covered here.

Which Gaze (A Malum Addon) config options matter?

2 parts

Gaze keeps everything in one file, config/gaze-common.toml. It only has a handful of options, and they mostly control how Umbral Spirits drop and how the Soul Ward scales. Here is exactly how this pack sets them.[6]

Umbral Spirit drops

  • umbralDropChance is set to 0.1, which is the same as the mod default. It is the chance for configured entities to drop Umbral Spirits when killed with a Veil Dagger. The allowed range is 0.0 to 1.0, and players always drop them 100% of the time.[6]
  • umbralDropEntities is set to ["minecraft:villager"]. This is the list of entity IDs that can drop Umbral Spirits when killed with a Veil Dagger. Players are always on the list, even though they are not written in it.[6]
  • doVillagerUmbralsOnServer is false in this pack. Villagers will not drop Umbral Spirits on a multiplayer server. Singleplayer is always allowed.[6]
Watch out: Villagers are the only entity on the drop list, and the server setting blocks their drops in multiplayer. If you play on a server, don't count on villagers for Umbral Spirits unless the server owner turns that option on.[6]

Soul Ward and rites

  • integrityRatio is set to 5, the same as the mod default. It decides how much Soul Ward Integrity you get for each point of Armour Toughness. The allowed range is 1.0 to 10.0.[6]
  • disableGazeRites is false, so Gaze rites are enabled. Setting it to true would turn them off entirely.[6]

Unverified The pack's config only lists mod defaults for integrityRatio and umbralDropChance, and both match. Whether disableGazeRites, doVillagerUmbralsOnServer and umbralDropEntities differ from the mod defaults can't be confirmed from the available sources.
