Sophisticated Storage in FTB Evolution 2

This pack ships Sophisticated Storage at version 1.5.117, and that is the version everything in this guide describes.^[1]

It is not a recent addition. The mod was already in the pack by version 1.0.2 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack for a while.^[1]

Sophisticated Storage gives you chests, barrels and shulker boxes that you upgrade through tiers. In this pack the tier decides how many inventory slots and upgrade slots a block has, so a good first session is: make a wooden chest or barrel, move up a tier, and only then think about fancier setups.^[2][3]

Step 1: a wooden Chest or Barrel

Start with the basic Chest or Barrel. The pack has a generic recipe for each one, plus per-wood recipes such as the acacia versions.^[4]

Step 2: move up to copper

The next tier is copper. The Copper Chest and Copper Barrel each have their own tier upgrade recipe. In this pack both give 45 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot, set by CopperChest.inventorySlotCount and CopperChest.upgradeSlotCount (the barrel has matching options).^[3][4]

Step 3: plan for the higher tiers

Here is what the other metal tiers give you in this pack. Chests, barrels and shulker boxes all share the same numbers per tier.^[3]

• Iron: 54 inventory slots and 2 upgrade slots.^[3]
• Gold: 81 inventory slots and 3 upgrade slots.^[3]
• Diamond: 108 inventory slots and 4 upgrade slots.^[3]

Netherite versions of the chest, barrel and shulker box exist too. The sources here do not show their slot counts, so check the server config file in game.^[2]

Step 4: shulker boxes

The mod has its own Shulker Box. You can turn a vanilla shulker box into one with a dedicated recipe, and there are recipes for individual colours too.^[4]

Metal shulker boxes can be made from the matching metal chest. For example, the Copper Shulker Box has a recipe that starts from a copper chest.^[4]

Later: linking storage together

Once you have several chests and barrels, the Storage Controller lets you deposit items into and pipe items from a connected multiblock of storages. Its range is set by controllerRange, which is 15 in this pack.^[2][3]

Inside such a multiblock, Storage Input lets you pipe items in, Storage Output lets you pipe items out, and Storage I/O does both. You can switch between these three with simple recipes.^[2][4]

Sophisticated Storage gives you chests, barrels and shulker boxes in six material tiers. Each tier has its own number of inventory slots and upgrade slots, set in the server config. The tier numbers in the list below match the mod default.^[3]

Barrels, chests and shulker boxes of the same tier share the same numbers. For example, NetheriteChest.inventorySlotCount and NetheriteChest.upgradeSlotCount control the Netherite chest. If you ever tweak them, inventory slots accept 1 to 180 and upgrade slots accept 0 to 10.^[3]

Copper, iron and the other metal tiers are reached through tier upgrade recipes. The recipe dump counts 35 recipes of the storage tier upgrade type, and the copper barrel is one of them.^[4]

The Copper Barrel is crafted with the storage tier upgrade recipe type.

Storage multiblocks

The Storage Controller (Storage Controller) lets you deposit and pipe items to and from a connected multiblock of storages. It connects storage blocks within controllerRange, which is 15 in the pack (the config accepts 4 to 64).^[2][3][5]

• Storage Connector: bridges gaps between storage blocks in a storage multiblock.^[2]
• Storage I/O: when placed in a storage multiblock, it lets you pipe items both to and from it.^[2]
• Storage Input: only lets you pipe items into the multiblock, and its tooltip says it is optimized for low TPS impact.^[2]
• Storage Output: only lets you pipe items out of the multiblock.^[2]
• Storage Link: connects a separate multiblock of storages to a controller. Its tooltip says to use the Storage Tool to link it to the controller.^[2]

The pack has its own shapeless crafting recipe for the Storage Input.

Linked storages have a few rules in the mod's messages. Only the main linked storage can have its tier upgraded, packed storage cannot be linked, and linked storage cannot be packed.^[2]

Breaking, packing and big drops

When you break a barrel or chest, its loot table runs the mod's copy_storage_data function and also copies the custom name. The Storage Controller and the wooden Storage Connectors use the same function.^[5][6][7][8]

In this pack dropPacked is false. So chests and barrels are not always dropped packed with their contents when broken, and you need packing tape for that.^[2][9]

Limited barrels

Limited barrels come in levels I to IV for each material. Their tooltip shows the slot count and a base stack size multiplier. The multiplier per level is set in the config as baseSlotLimitMultiplier, and the upgrade slots follow the material's tier. Colour dyeing of the limited barrel counts is on through limitedBarrelCountDyeingEnabled.^[2][3]

Limited Netherite Barrel I uses a shapeless storage tier upgrade recipe.

Upgrade limits and how they behave

maxUpgradesPerStorage caps some upgrade types per storage. Barrels, chests and shulker boxes take at most 2 stack upgrades, 1 jukebox upgrade and 1 furnace upgrade. Limited barrels take at most 1 furnace upgrade and 1 jukebox upgrade. The stack upgrade does not stack bundles or any colour of shulker box, because they are in stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems.^[3]

Hopper upgrades move items on a timer. The basic Hopper Upgrade moves 1 stack-size worth every 8 ticks with 2 input and 2 output filter slots. The advanced version moves up to 4 every 2 ticks with 4 input and 4 output filter slots. The upgrade settings offer the IO modes Disabled, Off, Pull, Push and Push & Pull.^[2][3]

Magnet Upgrades pick up items around the storage. The basic one has a range of 3 and 9 filter slots, and the advanced one has a range of 5 and 16 filter slots.^[3]

Smelting, blasting and smoking upgrades, plus their auto versions, all run at speed and fuel efficiency multipliers of 1 in the pack. A value of 1.0 equals a vanilla furnace, and the config accepts 0.25 to 4.0. The auto versions have 8 input filter slots and 4 fuel filter slots.^[3]

For fluids, the Pump Upgrade has 4 fluid filter slots, set by pumpUpgrade.filterSlots.^[3]

Its base transfer is pumpUpgrade.maxInputOutput, which is 20 mB per operation. That base is multiplied by the number of rows in the storage and the stack multiplier.^[3]

pumpUpgrade.stackMultiplierRatio is 1 in the pack, and setting it to 0 stops the stack multiplier from affecting transfer.^[3]

The XP Pump can mend items with Mending, because xpPumpUpgrade.mendingOn is true.^[3]

xpPumpUpgrade.maxXpPointsPerMending is 5 in the pack: the most experience points used to mend an item per operation, and every 5 ticks 1 xp point usually repairs 2 damage.^[3]

The Void Upgrade and Advanced Void Upgrade have voidAlwaysEnabled set to true, so voiding is always available rather than only as an overflow option.^[3]

Compacting and compression

You can only have one Compacting Upgrade and one Compression Upgrade in a storage's upgrade slots. The game tells you if another one is already there. The Compression Upgrade manages up to 5 slots in the pack, and the items you place must follow its compression chain in order.^[2][3]

The Compacting Upgrade has 9 filter slots and the advanced version has 16. The pack adds the extra compacting shape 111/101/111, a hollow 3x3 of 8 items. It also lists extra decompressible items, such as glowstone to 4 glowstone dust and melon to 9 melon slices.^[3]

Shulker box restrictions

shulkerBoxDisallowedItems.disallowedItems blocks the Dank Storage items dank_1 to dank_7 from going into Sophisticated shulker boxes. The Dank Storage mod is Dank Storage.^[3]

shulkerBoxDisallowedItems.containerItemsDisallowed is false in the pack. That setting decides whether container items that cannot fit inside container items are allowed in shulker boxes.^[3]

Sophisticated Storage gives you chests, barrels and shulker boxes that you upgrade through material tiers. In this pack the chest tiers are copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite. Barrels appear in copper, iron, diamond and netherite in the recipes I can see, and shulker boxes in copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite.^[4]

Unverified The sources here show no quests involving this mod, so I can't give you a quest-book order for it. The tier path below follows the in-pack recipes only. Anything about costs or ingredients is shown by the recipe blocks themselves.

The copper chest, copper barrel, copper shulker box, diamond chest and diamond barrel are all made with the mod's storage tier upgrade recipe type, so you upgrade the storage you already have rather than starting from scratch.^[4]

Netherite

The Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade is a shapeless recipe, so it is the shortcut straight to the top tier. The limited netherite barrels, from Limited Netherite Barrel 1 up to Limited Netherite Barrel 4, are made with shapeless tier upgrade recipes too.^[4]

The clearest link in this pack is between Sophisticated Storage and Sophisticated Storage In Motion. The in-pack recipes let you carry Sophisticated Storage containers on boats and minecarts, and then upgrade them tier by tier while they are still on the vehicle.^[4]

There is a storage boat recipe for every wood type: acacia, bamboo (the raft), birch, cherry, dark oak, jungle, mangrove, oak, pale oak and spruce. These recipes involve a Sophisticated Storage Chest and the Storage Boat.^[4]

Upgrading containers on the vehicle

The storage boat has its own tier upgrade recipes, so you do not need to take the container off first. They follow the usual Sophisticated Storage material ladder: a plain chest or barrel goes to copper or iron, copper goes to iron, iron goes to gold, gold goes to diamond, and diamond goes to netherite. The same ladder exists for shulker boxes (copper to iron, iron to gold, gold to diamond, diamond to netherite) and for the limited barrels, tiers I to IV.^[4]

In total, 70 recipes use the shaped tier upgrade type from Sophisticated Storage In Motion, and they produce 30 different results. The diamond to netherite step also exists for Storage Minecart with a barrel, chest, shulker box or limited barrel (I to IV), for example Netherite Chest.^[4]

FTB Armory

Sophisticated Storage's own upgrade item tag has optional entries from FTB Armory: Adamantite Storage Stack Upgrade, Aeternium Storage Stack Upgrade and Aurichalcum Storage Stack Upgrade. Because they are in that tag, Sophisticated Storage treats them as upgrades.^[12]

Sophisticated Storage has a common config and a very large server config in this pack. Below are the options you are most likely to care about, with the exact values the pack ships. Every numeric value covered here is listed in the config as equal to the mod default, so the pack has not changed any of those numbers.^[3][9]

Breaking chests and barrels

dropPacked is set to false. That means chests and barrels are not always dropped as packed with their contents when you break them, so you need packing tape for that.^[9]

There is also a safety net: tooManyItemEntityDrops is 200. If breaking a chest or barrel would drop more item entities than that, the break is cancelled unless you hold shift, and a message explains the packing tape option.^[3]

Slot counts by tier

Inventory and upgrade slots are set per material, and the chest, barrel and shulker box versions of each tier have their own matching entries with the same values.^[3]

• Wood chest and barrel: 27 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot (WoodChest.inventorySlotCount, WoodChest.upgradeSlotCount, WoodBarrel.inventorySlotCount, WoodBarrel.upgradeSlotCount). The plain shulker box has the same numbers (ShulkerBox.inventorySlotCount, ShulkerBox.upgradeSlotCount).^[3]

Limited barrels have their own base slot limit multipliers. For example, LimitedBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier is 32 and LimitedNetheriteBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier is 160. Dyeing limited barrel counts is on, since limitedBarrelCountDyeingEnabled is true.^[3]

Upgrade limits

maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many of certain upgrade types one storage block can hold. In this pack, barrels, chests and shulker boxes can each take at most 2 stack upgrades, 1 jukebox upgrade and 1 furnace upgrade. Limited barrels are capped at 1 furnace upgrade and 1 jukebox upgrade.^[3]

Stack upgrades will not stack bundles or any of the shulker boxes, because they are listed in stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems.^[3]

Shulker boxes and Dank Storage

shulkerBoxDisallowedItems.disallowedItems blocks all Dank Storage tiers (dank_1 to dank_7) from going inside Sophisticated Storage shulker boxes. See Dank Storage for those items. Meanwhile shulkerBoxDisallowedItems.containerItemsDisallowed is false.^[3]

Upgrade behaviour

• Magnet range: 3 blocks for the normal magnet and 5 for the advanced one (magnetUpgrade.magnetRange, advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).^[3]
• Hopper upgrade: a transfer every 8 ticks, moving a maximum stack size of 1 per transfer (hopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks, hopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize).^[3]
• Advanced hopper upgrade: a transfer every 2 ticks, with a maximum stack size of 4 per transfer (advancedHopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks, advancedHopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize).^[3]
• Smelting, smoking and blasting upgrades run at vanilla furnace speed and fuel efficiency, with the multipliers at 1 (smeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier, smokingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier, blastingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier, smeltingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier).^[3]
