What is Nature's Compass?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Nature's Compass is an item that lets you search for a biome's location anywhere in the world and view information about it. If you're hunting for a specific biome, whether vanilla or modded, this is the tool for the job.[1]

This pack includes version 1.21.1-3.4.0 for NeoForge.[2]

How you use it

  • Right-click with the compass to open the biome selection GUI. From there you can search for a biome or view information about it.[1]
  • Once a biome is found, information about it is displayed on the HUD.[1]
  • Shift-right-click to reset the compass's state.[1]
  • When the compass isn't pointing at a biome, it points at the world spawn.[1]

Who it's for

It's for anyone who wants to find a particular biome without wandering aimlessly. It supports all registered biomes, so biomes added by other mods in the pack are covered too. The mod's own page says things like blacklisted biomes and the maximum search distance can be adjusted in its config file.[1]

The compass only finds biomes. If you want to locate structures, the mod's page points to a separate mod, Explorer's Compass.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't show Nature's Compass in any quest or on the ATM Star path, and they don't give this pack's recipe or config values for it. I can't say where it fits in this pack's progression.

How do you get started with Nature's Compass?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Your first stop is Nature's Compass. It lets you search for a biome's location anywhere in the world and view information about it. It supports all registered biomes, both vanilla and modded, so it works with the biomes added by other mods in the pack too.[1]

Step 1: craft the compass

The pack has a shaped crafting recipe for the compass. The block below shows the exact in-pack recipe, so check it there rather than trusting any memory of the mod's defaults.[3]

Crafting Shaped

Recipe id: naturescompass:natures_compass

The in-pack shaped recipe for Nature's Compass.

Step 2: learn the controls

  • Right-click with the compass to open the biome selection GUI. From there you can search for a biome or view information about it.[1]
  • Shift-right-click to reset the compass's state.[1]
  • When the compass is not pointing at a biome, it points at the world spawn.[1]
  • Once a biome is found, information about it is shown on the HUD.[1]
Tip: If the needle seems to be heading for spawn, it just means no biome is selected. Right-click, pick a biome, and it will have a target again.[1]

Repairing it

The pack also has a separate shapeless crafting recipe with the id repair_natures_compass, which also gives you a Nature's Compass.[3]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: naturescompass:repair_natures_compass

The in-pack shapeless repair recipe.

Unverified The mod's project page says blacklisted biomes and the maximum search distance can be adjusted in its config file. The sources here do not show a config file for this mod in the pack, so the pack's values for these are unverified.

How does Nature's Compass work?

5 parts

Nature's Compass is a simple mod: there are no machines, multiblocks, power or pipes to set up. Everything runs through one item, the Nature's Compass, which finds biomes anywhere in the world. Here is how it behaves in the pack.[1][4]

Using the compass

  • Right-click with the compass to open the biome selection screen. From there you can search for a biome or just read information about it.[1]
  • Shift-right-click to reset the compass's state.[1]
  • While the compass is not pointing at a biome, it points at the world spawn.[1]
  • It supports all registered biomes, both vanilla and modded. Information about a found biome shows on the HUD.[1]

If you want to find structures instead of biomes, that is the job of Explorer's Compass, which the mod's own page points to.[1]

Crafting Shapeless

A shapeless recipe that also produces the compass, used for repairs.

Repairs only matter if durability is switched on. In this pack General.compassDurability is 0, which disables durability, so the compass does not break from searching.[6]

How the search is tuned

The search settings live in config/naturescompass-common.toml. In this pack they match the mod's defaults, so nothing about searching has been changed from the mod's own values.[6]

  • General.maxSamples is 50,000, the maximum number of samples taken when searching for a biome.[6]
  • General.radiusModifier is 2,500. The biome size multiplied by this value gives the maximum search radius. Raising it increases search accuracy but makes the process more resource intensive.[6]
  • General.sampleSpaceModifier is 16. The biome size multiplied by this value gives the sample space. Lowering it increases accuracy but costs more resources.[6]
  • General.maxNextSearches is 25, the most times you can search for the next instance of a located biome. At 0 the compass always locates the nearest biome.[6]

Costs, limits and display

  • General.defaultXpLevels is 0, so searching costs no XP levels by default. The allowed range is 0 to 3.[6]
  • General.perBiomeXpLevels is empty in the pack. It can override the XP cost for individual biomes using "biome_id,num_levels" pairs, with a maximum of 3 levels.[6]
  • General.biomeBlacklist is empty, so no biome is blocked from searching. If entries were added, the compass could not search for those biomes.[6]
  • General.displayCoordinates is true, so the HUD shows the precise coordinates and distance of a located spot instead of only the direction the compass points.[6]
  • General.allowTeleport is true, which lets a player teleport to a located biome when in creative mode, opped, or in cheat mode. In normal survival play you walk there.[6]

A pack-specific detail

The pack's own script watches your inventory, and carrying a Nature's Compass counts toward the "ftb:wayfarer_wares" stage. The same stage can also be reached by carrying items from Waystones, Explorer's Compass or Paragliders.[7]

How do you progress through Nature's Compass?

2 parts

Good news for you: there is no tier ladder to climb here. In this pack, the recipe sources show Nature's Compass making a single item, the Nature's Compass. The sources I have don't show any upgrade steps for it.[5]

Getting the compass

The pack has two in-pack recipes that produce the compass. One is a shaped crafting recipe, and the other is a shapeless crafting recipe named as a repair recipe. Both blocks below show the exact ingredients.[5]

Crafting Shaped

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: naturescompass:repair_natures_compass

The shapeless repair recipe, which also outputs the compass.

What the pack does with it

The pack's own script gives the compass a small job. Every 20 ticks it checks your inventory for a list of travel items. That list includes Nature's Compass along with the Waystones warp stone and the warp, return and bound scrolls from Waystones, the item from Explorer's Compass, and the paraglider from Paragliders. If you carry any one of them, you get the "ftb:wayfarer_wares" stage.[7]

Getting that stage also grants the "open_for_business" advancement. If you hold every shop stage in the script's shop stage list, you get the "valued_customer" advancement too. You only need to have the compass in your inventory, so you don't have to use it.[7]

Tip: Any of the other travel items in that list gives you the same wayfarer stage, so the compass is just one way to unlock it.[7]

Which Nature's Compass config options matter?

3 parts

Everything for Nature's Compass lives in one file, config/naturescompass-common.toml, under the General section. The mod's own description says blacklisted biomes and maximum search distance are adjustable there, and you'll find those plus a few other options below.[1][6]

Tip: Every option in this pack that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default. The pack doesn't change any of the numeric values below, so the mod's standard behaviour is what you get.[6]

Durability and XP cost

  • General.compassDurability is 0 (range 0 to 10,000). This is the number of successful searches before the compass breaks, and 0 disables durability, so your compass never wears out here.[6]
  • General.defaultXpLevels is 0 (range 0 to 3), so a biome search costs no XP levels by default.[6]
  • General.perBiomeXpLevels is empty. When filled, it overrides the default cost for specific biomes using "biome_id,num_levels" pairs, with a maximum of 3 levels. With the list empty, every biome uses the default cost.[6]

How the search works

  • General.maxNextSearches is 25 (range 0 to 10,000). It caps how many times you can ask for the next instance of a located biome. Setting it to 0 turns that off, and the compass then always finds the nearest biome.[6]
  • General.maxSamples is 50,000 (range 0 to 1,000,000). This is the maximum number of samples taken when searching for a biome.[6]
  • General.radiusModifier is 2,500 (range 0 to 1,000,000). Biome size multiplied by this value gives the maximum search radius, and raising it increases search accuracy.[6]
  • General.sampleSpaceModifier is 16 (range 0 to 1,000,000). Biome size multiplied by this value gives the sample space. Lowering it increases accuracy but makes the search more resource intensive.[6]

Teleporting, HUD and blacklist

  • General.allowTeleport is true. A player can teleport to a located biome when in creative mode, opped, or in cheat mode.[6]
  • General.displayCoordinates is true, so the HUD can show the precise coordinates and distance of what you found instead of leaving you to follow the needle.[6]
  • General.biomeBlacklist is empty, so no biome is blocked from searching. If you add entries, they use resource locations, and * and ? work as wildcards.[6]

What changed in Nature's Compass between versions?

1 part

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships Nature's Compass 26.1-3.3.0-neoforge. The pack's mod list says the mod was first included in FTB Evolution 2 1.0.2 or earlier.[8]

What changed in 26.1-3.3.0

This is the version you are playing in 1.1.0. Its changelog lists these changes:[8][9]

  • Updated to NeoForge 26.1.[9]
  • Added a config option to give the compass durability, plus a recipe to repair a broken compass. The changelog does not say what the option is set to in this pack.[9]
  • Fixed the compass HUD info not rendering when any debug elements are set to always-on.[9]
  • Fixed biomes with the c:hidden_from_locator_selection tag not being hidden.[9]
  • Fixed biome names not displaying properly when the fixBiomeNames config option is disabled.[9]

Unverified The sources here include no pack changelog entries for Nature's Compass, so they do not show how the mod changed between earlier pack releases. Check the pack's own changelog for that.
