What is Nature's Compass?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Nature's Compass is an item that lets you search for a biome's location anywhere in the world and view information about it. If you're hunting for a specific biome, whether vanilla or modded, this is the tool for the job.[1]

This pack includes version 1.21.1-3.4.0 for NeoForge.[2]

How you use it

  • Right-click with the compass to open the biome selection GUI. From there you can search for a biome or view information about it.[1]
  • Once a biome is found, information about it is displayed on the HUD.[1]
  • Shift-right-click to reset the compass's state.[1]
  • When the compass isn't pointing at a biome, it points at the world spawn.[1]

Who it's for

It's for anyone who wants to find a particular biome without wandering aimlessly. It supports all registered biomes, so biomes added by other mods in the pack are covered too. The mod's own page says things like blacklisted biomes and the maximum search distance can be adjusted in its config file.[1]

The compass only finds biomes. If you want to locate structures, the mod's page points to a separate mod, Explorer's Compass.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't show Nature's Compass in any quest or on the ATM Star path, and they don't give this pack's recipe or config values for it. I can't say where it fits in this pack's progression.

How do you get started with Nature's Compass?

4 parts

Nature's Compass adds one item, the Nature's Compass, which finds a biome anywhere in the world and shows you information about it. It works with every registered biome, vanilla and modded. So if you're hunting for a particular biome in this pack, this is the first thing worth making.[1][3]

Step 1: craft the compass

Crafting Shaped

Crafting Shaped
any saplingany logany sapling
any logCompassany log
any saplingany logany sapling

Recipe id: naturescompass:natures_compass

This is the in-pack recipe for the compass. It starts from a regular compass.

Step 2: learn the controls

  1. Right-click with the compass to open the biome selection screen. From there you can search for a biome or just read about it.[1]
  2. Pick a biome and the compass starts pointing at it. Information about a found biome is shown on your HUD.[1]
  3. Shift-right-click to reset the compass's state when you want to pick something else.[1]
  4. When the compass isn't pointing at a biome, it points at the world spawn. Don't panic if it seems to be heading somewhere odd before you've searched.[1]

What this pack sets

Repairing it

There is also a repair recipe that combines a regular compass with a Nature's Compass. With durability disabled in this pack, you shouldn't need it, but it's there if the setting is ever changed.[4][5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: naturescompass:repair_natures_compass

The in-pack repair recipe.

Tip: Teleporting to a located biome is only allowed in creative mode, when opped, or in cheat mode. General.allowTeleport is true in this pack, but it doesn't let regular survival players skip the walk.[5]

How does Nature's Compass work?

4 parts

Nature's Compass has no machines to build and no power or fluids to feed. Nature's Compass is a single item that searches for a biome's location anywhere in the world and shows you information about it. Everything interesting happens in how you use it and in a handful of config options, so that's what this section covers.[1][3]

Using the compass

  • Right-click with the compass to open the biome selection GUI. From there you can search for a biome or view information about it.[1]
  • Shift-right-click to reset the compass's state.[1]
  • When the compass isn't pointing at a biome, it points at the world spawn.[1]
  • It supports all registered biomes, both vanilla and modded.[1]
  • Information about a found biome is displayed on the HUD. This pack has General.displayCoordinates set to true, so you can read the precise coordinates and distance of the located biome instead of relying only on which way the needle points.[1][5]

How the search works

The compass searches by taking samples. The radius and sample space options control how far and how finely it looks: the maximum search radius is the biome size multiplied by General.radiusModifier, and the sample space is the biome size multiplied by General.sampleSpaceModifier. This pack sets the radius modifier to 2,500 and the sample space modifier to 16.[5]

According to the config notes, raising the radius modifier increases search accuracy, and lowering the sample space modifier also increases accuracy but makes the search more resource intensive. General.maxSamples caps the number of samples taken in one search, and the pack sets it to 50,000.[5]

Once a biome is located, you can ask for the next instance of it. General.maxNextSearches limits how many times you can do that, and this pack sets it to 25. At 0 the compass would always locate the nearest biome.[5]

Costs, limits and restrictions

  • Durability: General.compassDurability is the number of successful searches before the compass breaks and needs repair. The pack sets it to 0, which disables durability, so your compass won't wear out.[5]
  • XP cost: General.defaultXpLevels is the number of XP levels a search consumes, and the pack sets it to 0. General.perBiomeXpLevels can override this per biome (up to 3 levels), but the pack leaves it empty, so every search uses the default.[5]
  • Blacklist: General.biomeBlacklist lists biomes the compass can't search for. In this pack it is empty, so nothing is blocked.[5]
  • Teleporting: General.allowTeleport is true in this pack. It lets a player teleport to a located biome when in creative mode, opped, or in cheat mode.[5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: naturescompass:repair_natures_compass

A shapeless repair recipe exists, but with durability set to 0 in this pack your compass shouldn't need it.

Tip: Since the pack has no XP cost, no durability and an empty blacklist, you can search freely. If a search ever feels short of results, the sample and radius options above are the ones that shape it.[5]

How do you progress through Nature's Compass?

3 parts

Nature's Compass has no tiers in this pack. The recipes the pack gives for it make a single item, Nature's Compass, so there are no upgrade steps to climb.[4]

Getting the compass

Nature's Compass adds a shaped crafting recipe for the compass. It is a mod recipe that the pack has not replaced, and it is the only way the pack's recipes show for making the item.[4]

Repairing it

There is also a shapeless repair recipe. It takes your existing Nature's Compass and gives you a Nature's Compass back.[4]

Where it sits in the quest book

Unverified The sources here show no quest chapter or quest that involves Nature's Compass, so where it fits in the pack's progression is not confirmed. Check the in-game quest book if you want to see whether it is mentioned.

Which Nature's Compass config options matter?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Good news: in this pack, every Nature's Compass option that lists a mod default is sitting at that default. The pack doesn't change any of those numbers, so what you read in the mod's own config descriptions applies here as is.[6][7]

Cost and durability

  • General.compassDurability is 0, which disables durability. The compass doesn't break after a set number of successful searches, so it doesn't need repairing for that reason.[7]
  • General.defaultXpLevels is 0 (allowed range 0 to 3), so searching for a biome costs no XP levels.[7]
  • General.perBiomeXpLevels is an empty list. No biome has its own XP cost, and the mod caps any per-biome cost at 3 levels.[7]
  • General.maxNextSearches is 25. That's how many times you can ask for the next instance of a located biome. Setting it to 0 would turn that off and always give you the nearest one.[7]

Search reach and accuracy

Teleporting and HUD info

  • General.allowTeleport is true. You can teleport to a located biome, but only in creative mode, when opped, or in cheat mode.[7]
  • General.displayCoordinates is true, so the HUD shows the exact coordinates and distance of what you found instead of leaving you to follow the needle.[7]

Client options

What changed in Nature's Compass between versions?

2 parts

This pack ships Nature's Compass 1.20.1-1.12.0-forge. It was first included in Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.45.4 or earlier, so you have had it for a good while.[8]

1.12.0 (the version in the pack)

This release backported a batch of features and fixes from the mod's newer versions to 1.20.1:[9]

  • You can search for the next instance of a biome you have already located.[9]
  • New config options make the compass consume XP levels when searching for a biome.[9]
  • A config option adds durability to the compass, along with a recipe to repair a broken compass.[9]
  • Fixed the compass HUD info being rendered twice when certain mods are installed.[9]
  • Improved the biome selection GUI.[9]
  • Added Spanish and Ecuadorian Spanish translations.[9]

1.11.2

This release moved the mod to Forge 1.20.1 and added the compass to the minecraft:compasses tag. It also added Swedish translations.[10]

It also fixed some bugs. The compass no longer spins when the player's yaw goes from positive to negative or vice versa. Another fix stops a server hang and eventual crash when using the compass to teleport to coordinates with no blocks to stand on.[10]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Nature's Compass were available, so any changes the pack itself made to this mod, such as config values or recipes, are unverified here.
