What is More Overlays Updated?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

More Overlays Updated brings a few handy overlays back from NEI: a light-level and mob-spawn overlay, a chunk border overlay, and an item search highlight for JEI. If you build big bases or mob farms and are tired of guessing where monsters can spawn, this one is for you.[1]

The pack ships version 1.24.2 of the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1, and it has been included since pack version 2.25 or earlier. The mod is client-side only, so it only changes what you see on your own screen.[1][2]

What you get

  • Light overlay and mob spawns: press F7 to toggle it. A yellow X marks blocks where monsters can spawn at night, and a red X marks blocks where monsters can always spawn.[1]
  • Chunk boundaries: press F9 to toggle it. It has three modes. The first shows red lines in the corners and a yellow line in the middle of the chunk. The second adds a green grid on the chunk edges. The third uses the green grid to outline a Minecraft region and shows the matching region save file in the top left corner.[1]
  • Inventory item search: double-click the JEI search field to turn it on. Items in the open inventory that don't match your filter get blacked out, and you can also search for custom named items.[1]
Tip: The item search only works because JEI is installed. The mod uses JEI's own search algorithm to highlight items.[1]

Configuration

On NeoForge you can open the config from the main screen via Mods, then MoreOverlays, then Config. You can also edit config/moreoverlays.toml directly.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

It's a quality-of-life utility rather than a progression mod. You don't craft anything with it and there's nothing to unlock, so you can use it from your first night.[1]

Unverified The sources don't show this mod on the ATM Star path or in any quest, so it isn't a progression step.

How do you get started with More Overlays Updated?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Good news: there is nothing to craft to get started with More Overlays Updated. The mod page describes it as client-side only and as a set of overlays, so your first steps are just learning the keys and what each overlay shows you. Everything below follows the mod page as it currently stands.[1]

Step 1: Turn on the light overlay

Press F7 to toggle the Light Level / Mob spawns overlay. It marks blocks where monsters can spawn: a yellow X means they can spawn at night, and a red X means they can always spawn. Light up the red and yellow spots and your base stays safe.[1]

The mod's settings also include a Safe Light Level option, plus ranges for how far up, down and sideways the overlay checks. Those are handy if the overlay feels too busy or too limited.[3]

Step 2: Check chunk boundaries

Press F9 to toggle the Chunk Boundaries overlay. As the mod page currently describes it, the overlay has three modes:[1]

  • 1st mode, as the mod page describes it: red lines in the corners and a yellow line in the middle of the chunk.[1]
  • 2nd mode, as the mod page describes it: the same, plus a green grid on the edges of the chunk.[1]
  • 3rd mode, as the mod page describes it: the green grid outlines a Minecraft region and shows the matching region save file in the top left corner.[1]

Item Search only works when JEI is installed, because it uses JEI's search algorithm. Double-click the JEI search field to turn it on. Any item in the inventory you have open that doesn't match your filter gets blacked out, which makes finding things in a messy chest much quicker. You can also search for custom named items.[1]

Tip: Not sure which keys are bound? Look for the More Overlays Updated category in the keybind list. It has entries named Toggle Light Overlay and Toggle Chunk Boundaries. F7 and F9 are the keys the mod page lists for them at the moment.[1][3]

Changing the settings

On Forge and NeoForge you can open the settings from the main menu through Mods, then MoreOverlays, then Config. The settings screen is titled More Overlays Updated Settings and has Save, Undo Changes and Reset Settings buttons. It has separate categories for Light Overlay, Chunk Boundaries, Item Search and Render Settings, and the last one lets you change overlay colors and line widths. On Fabric, the mod page says the config file is not available currently but will be added in the future.[1][3]

How does More Overlays Updated work?

4 parts

The project page currently describes More Overlays Updated as a client-side mod that draws overlays on your screen, with no machines, multiblocks, power or fluid handling, so there is nothing to automate. It brings back a few overlays from NEI: a light level overlay for mob spawns, a chunk border overlay and an item search overlay for JEI.[1]

Light overlay (mob spawns)

By default you toggle the light overlay with F7. It marks blocks with an X. A yellow X means monsters can spawn there at night, and a red X means monsters can always spawn there. That makes it handy for lighting up a base or a mob farm area.[1][4]

The mod's settings list these options for the light overlay: Horizontal Range, Up Range, Down Range, Safe Light Level, Simple Check, Ignore Layer, Ignore Spawnlist, Use Number Overlay and Update Interval (Frames). The colours and sizes of the spawn markers are under Render Settings, as Spawn: Color, Spawn: Night Color, Spawn: Safe Color, Spawn: Line Width and Spawn: Number Size.[4]

Chunk boundaries

The project page lists F9 for the chunk boundaries overlay, and the keybind is named Toggle Chunk Boundaries. The overlay has three modes, as the project page describes them:[1][4]

  1. First mode: red lines in the corners and a yellow line in the middle of the chunk.[1]
  2. Second mode: the same, plus a green grid on the edges of the chunk.[1]
  3. Third mode: the green grid outlines a Minecraft region, and the matching region save file is shown in the top left corner.[1]

The settings include Show Mid Point and Edge Radius for chunk boundaries. Render Settings also has Chunk: Edge Color, Chunk: Grid Color, Chunk: Middle Color and Chunk: Thick Lines.[4]

Item search overlay

Item search only works when JEI is installed, because the mod uses JEI's own search algorithm to highlight items. Double-click the JEI search field to turn it on. Then, when you search, every item in the inventory you have open that does not match the filter is blacked out. You can also search for custom named items.[1]

The Item Search Overlay settings are Enable Search, Search Custom, Max Search Results, Search Tooltip, Search Box Color, Slot Color and Slot Transparency.[4]

Settings and keybinds

The keybinds appear in the controls screen under the category More Overlays Updated, as Toggle Light Overlay and Toggle Chunk Boundaries. The mod's settings screen is titled More Overlays Updated Settings and has Save, Undo Changes and Reset Settings buttons. On Forge and NeoForge, the project page says you open it from the Mods screen via MoreOverlays and Config. For Fabric, the project page says the config file is not available currently but will be added in the future.[1][4]

Unverified The sources here do not show the default values of the options above, or whether this pack changes any of them, and there is no config file for this mod in the sources. Check the in-game settings screen for the values this pack uses.

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as moreoverlays, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
