What is More Overlays Updated?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

More Overlays Updated brings a few handy overlays back from NEI: a light-level and mob-spawn overlay, a chunk border overlay, and an item search highlight for JEI. If you build big bases or mob farms and are tired of guessing where monsters can spawn, this one is for you.[1]

The pack ships version 1.24.2 of the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1, and it has been included since pack version 2.25 or earlier. The mod is client-side only, so it only changes what you see on your own screen.[1][2]

What you get

  • Light overlay and mob spawns: press F7 to toggle it. A yellow X marks blocks where monsters can spawn at night, and a red X marks blocks where monsters can always spawn.[1]
  • Chunk boundaries: press F9 to toggle it. It has three modes. The first shows red lines in the corners and a yellow line in the middle of the chunk. The second adds a green grid on the chunk edges. The third uses the green grid to outline a Minecraft region and shows the matching region save file in the top left corner.[1]
  • Inventory item search: double-click the JEI search field to turn it on. Items in the open inventory that don't match your filter get blacked out, and you can also search for custom named items.[1]
Tip: The item search only works because JEI is installed. The mod uses JEI's own search algorithm to highlight items.[1]

Configuration

On NeoForge you can open the config from the main screen via Mods, then MoreOverlays, then Config. You can also edit config/moreoverlays.toml directly.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

It's a quality-of-life utility rather than a progression mod. You don't craft anything with it and there's nothing to unlock, so you can use it from your first night.[1]

Unverified The sources don't show this mod on the ATM Star path or in any quest, so it isn't a progression step.

How do you get started with More Overlays Updated?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing to craft to get started with this mod. More Overlays Updated is a client-side mod that adds overlays you switch on with keys, so you can use it from the first minute in your world.[1]

Your first steps, in order

  1. Press F7 to turn on the Light Level / Mob spawns overlay. It shows a yellow X on blocks where monsters can spawn at night, and a red X where monsters can always spawn. Check this before you build your first base or light up a cave.[1]
  2. Press F9 to turn on the Chunk Boundaries overlay. Pressing it again cycles through three modes. The first shows red lines in the corners and a yellow line in the middle of the chunk. The second adds a green grid on the chunk edges. The third outlines a Minecraft region with the green grid and shows the matching region save file in the top left corner.[1]
  3. Double-click the JEI search field to turn on Item Search. Any item in your open inventory that doesn't match your filter is blacked out, so you can find things in a messy chest fast. You can also search for custom-named items.[1]
Tip: Item Search only works when JEI is installed, because it uses JEI's own search algorithm to highlight items.[1]

Why this order

The light overlay comes first because it helps you keep your early shelter safe from mob spawns. The chunk overlay is next because it helps you plan farms and bases around chunk edges. Item Search is last, since it pays off once your inventory and storage fill up.[1]

Changing settings

On Forge and NeoForge you can open the config from the main screen through Mods, then MoreOverlays, then Config. You can also edit config/moreoverlays.toml directly. On Fabric, the project page says a config file isn't available yet.[1]

Unverified The F7 and F9 keys and the overlay behaviour above come from the mod's own project page. Whether this pack changes any key bindings or config values hasn't been confirmed. If a key does nothing, check your Controls settings.

How does More Overlays Updated work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.11 guide

This mod has no machines, no multiblocks and no power or fluid systems, it doesn't add a single block or item to the world. Everything it does happens on your client, drawing three optional overlays on top of the game you're already playing. It's client-side only, so it changes nothing about the server you connect to and nothing about the pack's progression.[1]

The mod brings back a handful of overlays that old NEI users will recognise: a light level / mob spawn overlay, a chunk border overlay, and an inventory item search that hooks into JEI.[1]

Light overlay and mob spawns

Press F7 to toggle the light level overlay. It marks blocks with a yellow X where monsters can spawn at night, and a red X where monsters can always spawn. That distinction is the whole trick: red means the spot is permanently dangerous and needs a light source or a spawn-proofing block, while yellow only becomes a problem once the sun goes down.[1]

Tip: Sweep a new base with F7 on before you call it done, red X marks are the ones that will keep spawning mobs inside your walls no matter the time of day.[1]

Chunk boundaries

Press F9 to toggle the chunk boundary overlay. It cycles through three modes rather than simply turning on and off, so tapping the key repeatedly steps you through increasing levels of detail.[1]

  1. The first mode shows red lines in the corners of the chunk and a yellow line down the middle.[1]
  2. The second mode adds a green grid on the edges of the chunk.[1]
  3. The third mode uses the green grid to outline a Minecraft region instead, and displays the corresponding region save file name in the top left corner of the screen.[1]

That third mode is the one worth remembering when you're doing anything that cares about chunk or region alignment: lining up chunk-loaded machine rooms, planning quarries, or working out which region file a build actually lives in.[1]

The item search only works when JEI is installed, because it borrows JEI's own search algorithm to decide what matches. Double-click the JEI search field to enable it. With it on, you type a filter into JEI and every item in the currently open inventory that doesn't match gets blacked out, leaving only the matches visible.[1]

This is the fastest way to find one item in a wall of storage or a cluttered machine GUI. Searching for custom named items is supported too, so renamed tools and labelled stacks can be filtered the same way.[1]

Configuration

On Forge and NeoForge you can reach the settings from the main screen under Mods, then MoreOverlays, then Config, or by editing config/moreoverlays.toml directly. On Fabric a config file isn't available yet.[1]

Unverified The individual config keys and their defaults aren't covered by the sources available for this guide, so check the in-game config screen if you want to change keybinds or overlay ranges.

Which More Overlays Updated config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.11 guide

There isn't much to tune here. More Overlays Updated is client-side only, so anything you change affects just your game and never the server or other players.[1]

The setting you'll actually use day to day is the keybind. By default, F7 toggles the light level / mob spawn overlay, and you can rebind it like any other key in Minecraft's own controls menu.[1]

Unverified This pack doesn't ship a config file for More Overlays Updated, so the in-pack values for the overlay's colours, render distance and chunk border options couldn't be confirmed. If you want to change them, check the mod's own in-game config screen rather than assuming the pack has adjusted anything.

What changed in More Overlays Updated between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships More Overlays Updated 1.24.2, built for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[3]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so changes between individual pack releases are not covered here. Everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs.

1.24.2 (the version in this pack)

This is the biggest update in the sources, and it adds a feature you will probably notice straight away:[3][4]

  • Light Level Number Overlay: light levels can now be printed as numbers.[4]
  • A frame interval option for the light levels scan, to improve performance.[4]
  • Color code settings now use Hex, with a color preview on the side.[4]
  • Improved light scan performance.[4]
  • Added PT_BR localization.[4]

The same release also fixes a batch of bugs:[4]

  • Fixed a startup error when the mod is loaded on a server.[4]
  • Fixed a crash when teleporting to far coordinates with the chunk overlay on.[4]
  • Fixed error spam when using EMI and JEI together.[4]
  • Fixed setting line thickness, and some graphical issues in the config screen.[4]
  • Filtered slot overlays no longer display behind items in some modpacks.[4]
  • The border around the item search field no longer appears in front of tooltips.[4]

1.23.2-neoforge

This NeoForge build was all about the config screen:[5]

  • Fixed a crash after opening the config screen on NeoForge versions above 21.0.111.[5]
  • Fixed the config background not displaying correctly.[5]
  • Fixed config comments not displaying.[5]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as moreoverlays, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
