What is More Overlays Updated?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
More Overlays Updated brings a few handy overlays back from NEI: a light-level and mob-spawn overlay, a chunk border overlay, and an item search highlight for JEI. If you build big bases or mob farms and are tired of guessing where monsters can spawn, this one is for you.[1]
The pack ships version 1.24.2 of the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1, and it has been included since pack version 2.25 or earlier. The mod is client-side only, so it only changes what you see on your own screen.[1][2]
What you get
- Light overlay and mob spawns: press F7 to toggle it. A yellow X marks blocks where monsters can spawn at night, and a red X marks blocks where monsters can always spawn.[1]
- Chunk boundaries: press F9 to toggle it. It has three modes. The first shows red lines in the corners and a yellow line in the middle of the chunk. The second adds a green grid on the chunk edges. The third uses the green grid to outline a Minecraft region and shows the matching region save file in the top left corner.[1]
- Inventory item search: double-click the JEI search field to turn it on. Items in the open inventory that don't match your filter get blacked out, and you can also search for custom named items.[1]
Configuration
On NeoForge you can open the config from the main screen via Mods, then MoreOverlays, then Config. You can also edit config/moreoverlays.toml directly.[1]
Where it fits in the pack
It's a quality-of-life utility rather than a progression mod. You don't craft anything with it and there's nothing to unlock, so you can use it from your first night.[1]
Unverified The sources don't show this mod on the ATM Star path or in any quest, so it isn't a progression step.
How do you get started with More Overlays Updated?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide
Good news: there is nothing to craft to get started with More Overlays Updated. The mod page describes it as client-side only and as a set of overlays, so your first steps are just learning the keys and what each overlay shows you. Everything below follows the mod page as it currently stands.[1]
Step 1: Turn on the light overlay
Press F7 to toggle the Light Level / Mob spawns overlay. It marks blocks where monsters can spawn: a yellow X means they can spawn at night, and a red X means they can always spawn. Light up the red and yellow spots and your base stays safe.[1]
The mod's settings also include a Safe Light Level option, plus ranges for how far up, down and sideways the overlay checks. Those are handy if the overlay feels too busy or too limited.[3]
Step 2: Check chunk boundaries
Press F9 to toggle the Chunk Boundaries overlay. As the mod page currently describes it, the overlay has three modes:[1]
- 1st mode, as the mod page describes it: red lines in the corners and a yellow line in the middle of the chunk.[1]
- 2nd mode, as the mod page describes it: the same, plus a green grid on the edges of the chunk.[1]
- 3rd mode, as the mod page describes it: the green grid outlines a Minecraft region and shows the matching region save file in the top left corner.[1]
Step 3: Try the item search
Item Search only works when JEI is installed, because it uses JEI's search algorithm. Double-click the JEI search field to turn it on. Any item in the inventory you have open that doesn't match your filter gets blacked out, which makes finding things in a messy chest much quicker. You can also search for custom named items.[1]
Changing the settings
On Forge and NeoForge you can open the settings from the main menu through Mods, then MoreOverlays, then Config. The settings screen is titled More Overlays Updated Settings and has Save, Undo Changes and Reset Settings buttons. It has separate categories for Light Overlay, Chunk Boundaries, Item Search and Render Settings, and the last one lets you change overlay colors and line widths. On Fabric, the mod page says the config file is not available currently but will be added in the future.[1][3]
How does More Overlays Updated work?
4 parts
The mod's project page describes More Overlays Updated as adding a NEI-like light overlay for mob spawns, a chunk border overlay and a JEI item search overlay, and marks it as client-side only. So the mechanics here are about how those overlays work and how the pack has them set up. The settings below come from the pack's config file.[1]
Light overlay (mob spawns)
Press F7 to toggle the light overlay. It marks blocks with a yellow X where monsters can spawn at night, and a red X where monsters can always spawn. You can change the key in the controls screen under the More Overlays Updated category.[1][4]
The scan area is set by these options. In this pack lightoverlay.hrange is 16 blocks horizontally (north, east, south and west), lightoverlay.uprange is 4 blocks up, and lightoverlay.downrange is 16 blocks down.[5]
lightoverlay.saveLevel is the minimum safe light level where no mobs can spawn, and the pack sets it to 1. If you turn on lightoverlay.spawn_numbers, the overlay shows light levels as numbers instead of crosses. It is off in this pack.[5]
- lightoverlay.ignoreLayer (false in this pack): if true, the overlay ignores whether there is a 2 block space to spawn in. The config notes this means less lag.[5]
- lightoverlay.ignoreSpawnList (false in this pack): if true, the overlay goes only by light value and ignores whether mobs can actually spawn according to other mods and biome spawn lists.[5]
- lightoverlay.simpleCheck (false in this pack): blocks can allow or disallow spawns for different entity types, and that check is slow. Setting this to true is faster but less accurate.[5]
- lightoverlay.update_interval_frames is 1 in this pack, which updates the light scanner every frame and disables throttling. A higher value updates it only every N client ticks or frames.[5]
Colours and sizes are in the render settings. rendersettings.spawn_always_color is the X for spawns always possible, rendersettings.spawn_night_color is the X for spawns at night, and rendersettings.spawn_safe_color colours the number that means no spawns are possible. rendersettings.spawn_line_width is 2 and rendersettings.spawn_number_scale is 0.07 in this pack.[5]
Chunk boundaries
Press F9 to toggle chunk boundaries. The mod's project page describes three modes:[1][4]
- The first mode shows red lines in the corners and a yellow line in the middle of the chunk.[1]
- The second mode also shows a green grid on the edges of the chunk.[1]
- In the third mode the green grid outlines a Minecraft region, and the matching region save file is shown in the top left corner.[1]
chunkbounds.radius is how many chunks around you get edge lines, and it is 1 in this pack. chunkbounds.middle is true, so the middle line of your current chunk is shown.[5]
For looks, rendersettings.chunk_edge_color, rendersettings.chunk_mid_color and rendersettings.chunk_grid_color set the colours. rendersettings.chunk_line_width is 1.5, and rendersettings.chunk_line_thick is off.[5]
Inventory item search
Item search only works if JEI is installed, because it uses JEI's search algorithm. Double-click the JEI search field, then search for an item. Every item in the open inventory that does not match the filter gets blacked out. You can also search for custom named items.[1]
searchoverlay.search_enabled is true in this pack. Setting it to false disables the double-click search. searchoverlay.search_max_results is 16,384, which is the maximum number of search results for item searching to stay active.[5]
- searchoverlay.custom_search (true): also searches custom item names, for example items renamed in an anvil. Setting it to false improves performance.[5]
- searchoverlay.search_tooltip (true): also searches the tooltips of items in your inventory. Setting it to false improves performance.[5]
- searchoverlay.search_slot_alpha (0.5) and searchoverlay.search_slot_color (0) control the transparency and colour of the filtered out slots.[5]
- searchoverlay.search_box_color is the colour of the search box after you double-click it.[5]
Changing settings
On Forge and NeoForge you can open the config from the main screen via Mods, then MoreOverlays, then Config, or edit the config file directly. The in-game screen is titled More Overlays Updated Settings and has Save, Undo Changes and Reset Settings buttons. For Fabric, the mod's page says the config file is not available currently but will be added in the future.[1][4][5]
Which More Overlays Updated config options matter?
4 parts
Everything for this mod lives in config/moreoverlays.toml, split into light overlay, chunk bounds, render settings and search overlay groups. Here is how this pack sets the options you are most likely to touch.[5]
Light overlay (mob spawns)
- Scan range: lightoverlay.hrange is 16 horizontally (north, east, south, west), lightoverlay.downrange is 16 downwards and lightoverlay.uprange is 4 upwards.[5]
- lightoverlay.saveLevel is 1. That is the minimum light level treated as safe, where no mobs can spawn.[5]
- lightoverlay.spawn_numbers is false, so the overlay draws crosses instead of light level numbers. Set it to true if you want numbers.[5]
- lightoverlay.simpleCheck is false. Turning it on increases performance but decreases accuracy, because the check for which blocks allow or disallow spawns for different entity types is not very performant.[5]
- lightoverlay.ignoreLayer and lightoverlay.ignoreSpawnList are both false. Setting ignoreLayer to true means less lag. Setting ignoreSpawnList to true makes the overlay go purely by light value instead of checking whether mobs can actually spawn there.[5]
- lightoverlay.update_interval_frames is 1, which updates the light scanner every frame and disables throttling.[5]
Chunk bounds
- chunkbounds.middle is true, so the middle of your current chunk is shown (the yellow line).[5]
- chunkbounds.radius is 1. That is how many chunks around you get their edges shown (the red line).[5]
- rendersettings.chunk_line_thick is false and rendersettings.chunk_line_width is 1.5.[5]
Colors and sizes
Colors are stored as whole numbers from 0 to 16777215. The chunk edge color is 16711680 (rendersettings.chunk_edge_color), the chunk middle color is 16776960 (rendersettings.chunk_mid_color) and the chunk grid color is 65280 (rendersettings.chunk_grid_color).[5]
For spawn marks, rendersettings.spawn_always_color is 16711680 (spawns always possible), rendersettings.spawn_night_color is 16776960 (spawns at night possible) and rendersettings.spawn_safe_color is 65280 (no spawns possible). rendersettings.spawn_line_width is 2, and rendersettings.spawn_number_scale is 0.07 if you switch to numbers.[5]
JEI search overlay
- searchoverlay.search_enabled is true, so double clicking the JEI search bar triggers the item search. Set it to false to disable that.[5]
- searchoverlay.custom_search and searchoverlay.search_tooltip are both true, so the search also looks at custom item names (like anvil renames) and at tooltips. Setting either to false increases performance.[5]
- searchoverlay.search_max_results is 16,384, the maximum number of results for the item search to stay active.[5]
- Filtered out slots use searchoverlay.search_slot_color 0 with searchoverlay.search_slot_alpha 0.5, and the search box color on double click is 16776960 (searchoverlay.search_box_color).[5]
