What is Step Crafter?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Step Crafter is an add-on for Refined Storage. It adds a Step Crafter and a Step Requester, which give you recursive crafting and a way to keep items in stock in your network.[1]

What it does

With the Step Crafter, you put in a pattern and Shift + Click it to set a minimum and a maximum amount. When the amount of that pattern's output stored in your network drops below the minimum, it crafts automatically until the maximum is restored.[1]

The Step Requester works from a resource instead of a pattern. You select the resource you want to maintain, then click to set its minimum, maximum and batch size. When the available amount falls below the minimum, it asks your autocrafters to produce that resource in batches until the maximum is reached.[1]

In this pack

The pack includes Step Crafter 1.21.1-0.1.8, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1.[2]

The mod's project page lists a Step Crafter Manager, a Step Requester Manager, starting Step Crafter autocrafting tasks from the Grid, and a Redstone Pulse to start crafts as planned features. These are only plans, so don't count on them in this version.[1]

How do you get started with Step Crafter?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Step Crafter is an add-on for Refined Storage that adds recursive crafting and keeps items in stock on your storage network. The order below is the one I'd follow, and every recipe shown is the exact one used in this pack.[1]

First, make a Step Crafter

Start with the Step Crafter. It accepts patterns for recursive autocrafting and lets you set a minimum and a maximum. When the network's amount of a pattern's output falls below the minimum, it crafts automatically until the maximum is reached.[1][3]

To set it up, put a pattern in, then Shift + Click it to set the minimum and maximum amounts.[1]

Next, make a Step Requester

The Step Requester works differently. You pick a resource to maintain, then configure its minimum, maximum and batch size. When the amount falls below the minimum, it asks your autocrafters to produce more in batches until the maximum is reached.[1][3]

Then add Slot Upgrades

When you want to keep more things in stock, craft a Slot Upgrade. Each one increases the number of filter rows by 1. The mod's config also has a speed multiplier per slot upgrade for the Step Crafter.[3]

Keep an eye on things with a Monitor

The Step Crafting Monitor shows the status of step crafting tasks in your storage network. It also lets you cancel them, which is handy if a task isn't doing what you expected.[3]

Managers once you have several

When you have a lot of crafters or requesters, the managers save you from hunting for each one. The Step Crafter Manager lets you manage all your step crafters from a single interface, and the Step Requester Manager does the same for step requesters. A machine only shows up in its manager if its "visible to the manager" option is enabled.[3]

Tip: The Step Crafter can also import crafted components into the container it's pointed at, but only if that option is enabled in its screen. The grid tooltip also reads "ALT + click to stepcraft".[3]

The managers and the monitor also come in colored variants. The pack has coloring recipes for them, and the light blue coloring recipe gives you the plain, uncolored item.[4]

How does Step Crafter work?

7 parts

Step Crafter is an add-on for Refined Storage. It gives your network recursive crafting and a way to keep items in stock automatically. Everything is done with a handful of blocks that you configure through their screens.[1]

Step Crafter

The Step Crafter accepts patterns for recursive autocrafting and lets you set a minimum and a maximum for each one. When the amount of that pattern's output in your network falls below the minimum, it automatically crafts until the maximum is reached.[1][3]

  1. Put a pattern into the Step Crafter. The screen explains that the pattern is recursively followed to keep the items in stock.[1][3]
  2. Shift + Click the pattern to configure the minimum and maximum amounts.[1][3]
  3. Watch the slot text. A slot can show Crafting, Finished or Not Enough Ingredients. It can also report that the network is full and can't take the crafting result, or that the external container is full or doesn't accept any items.[3]

The Step Crafter screen also has toggles. "Insert into pointed container" makes it try to import the crafted components into the container it is pointed at. "Visible to the Step Crafter Manager" decides whether you can manage that crafter from the manager.[3]

Slot Upgrade

The Slot Upgrade increases the number of filter rows by 1. The mod also has a speed multiplier per slot upgrade for the Step Crafter, with the formula <SpeedUpgradeAmount> * <SpeedMultiplier> + 1.[3]

Step Requester

The Step Requester works from resources instead of patterns. You select the resource you want to maintain, then click it to set a minimum, a maximum and a batch size. When the available amount drops below the minimum, the requester asks your autocrafters to produce it in batches of that size until the maximum is reached.[1][3]

Like the crafter, it has a toggle called "Visible to the Step Requester Manager" that controls whether you can manage it from the manager.[3]

Monitoring and managing

The Step Crafting Monitor shows the status of step crafting tasks in your storage network and lets you cancel them. A task can be Ready, Running, Completed, Network Full or Not Enough Ingredients, and the monitor can also flag a Missing Resource. The Required and Used numbers it shows may not reflect the actual amounts.[3]

The Step Crafter Manager lets you manage all your step crafters from a single interface, and the Step Requester Manager does the same for step requesters. Each has a search mode that searches by the names of the crafters or requesters.[3]

The managers and the monitor come in colour variants, made with shapeless coloring recipes.[5]

In the grid

The grid has a Stock entry, and its tooltip tells you to ALT + click to stepcraft.[3]

Power

The mod has a configurable energy usage for the Step Crafter, the Step Requester, both managers, the Step Crafting Monitor and the Slot Upgrade.[3]

Unverified The mod has config options for the default minimum, maximum and batch size of newly configured resources, for each block's energy usage and for the speed multiplier per slot upgrade. Those values are set in the mod's config, and the sources here do not show this pack's values because no config file for this mod is available to read.

Colour variants

The crafter manager, requester manager and crafting monitor each have a set of coloured variants, such as Black Step Crafter Manager, Blue Step Requester Manager and Cyan Step Crafting Monitor. Each colour has its own shapeless coloring recipe in the pack.[5]

Crafting Shapeless

  • any step crafter manager
  • any light blue dye

Recipe id: stepcrafter:coloring/light_blue_step_crafter_manager

The light blue coloring recipe gives you the plain Step Crafter Manager, not a separate light blue item.

If you break one of the coloured blocks shown in the mod's loot tables, it drops itself and keeps any custom name you gave it.[6][7][8]

What changed in Step Crafter between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 11 0.10.0-beta ships Step Crafter 26.1.2-1.0.3. The pack has carried the mod since 0.0.23 or earlier, so the changes below are the mod's own release notes for the 26.1.2 line.[9]

Mod changelog

  • 1.0.0: the 26.1.2 port of the mod.[10]
  • 1.0.1: Step Requester performance improved by adding a timeout on failed requested crafts.[11]
  • 1.0.2: the default resource values for Step Crafter and Step Requester can now be changed in the client-side configuration screen.[12]
  • 1.0.3: fixed pressing Alt + Click not working inside Grid. This is the version in 0.10.0-beta.[9][13]

If you were on an older build, the 1.0.1 timeout means a craft that keeps failing no longer keeps a Step Requester busy. The 1.0.2 change lives in the client-side configuration screen, so you can adjust those defaults without editing anything else.[11][12]
