What is Sophisticated Backpacks?

Sophisticated Backpacks is part of this pack. The pack ships version 3.26.1, using the file sophisticatedbackpacks-26.1.2-3.26.1.2130.jar. It has been in the pack since this version or earlier.[1]

Unverified I can't confirm from the pack files what the mod does in this pack, how its items are crafted, or whether the pack changes any of its defaults. When this guide was put together, no quests and no ATM Star path steps involving this mod were found. This page will stay short until those details can be confirmed.

How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?

2 parts

Sophisticated Backpacks is all about the backpack itself plus a long list of upgrades that slot into it. Once you have a backpack, the first few upgrades below are the ones that make the biggest difference early on, and each has its own in-pack recipe, shown right under it.[2][3]

Unverified The sources I was given don't show the recipe for the backpack itself, so I can't tell you how to craft it here. Check the recipe viewer in-game for the backpack items. No quests in this pack involve this mod, so there is no quest path to follow. This site does hold All the Mods 11's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Your first upgrades

Start with the Upgrade Base. It has its own recipe in the pack. I can't confirm from the sources whether the other upgrades use it as an ingredient, so check each recipe below as you go.[2]

Next, make the Crafting Upgrade. It puts a crafting table in an upgrade tab, so you can craft without leaving the backpack screen.[2][3]

Then add the Feeding Upgrade. It feeds you with food from the backpack's inventory, so you don't have to stop and eat by hand.[2][3]

The Deposit Upgrade lets you sneak right-click an inventory to deposit items from your backpack into it. That makes it handy for emptying your pack after a trip.[2][3]

Before you carry anything you'd hate to lose, consider the Everlasting Upgrade. It makes the backpack indestructible, and it can't despawn or fall into the void.[2][3]

Later on

The pack also has stack upgrades in several tiers, from Stack Upgrade Starter Tier up to Stack Upgrade Tier 4, plus conversion recipes between tiers. There are Advanced versions of several upgrades too, such as the Advanced Magnet Upgrade, which magnets items into the backpack at a greater range and has more filtering options. I can't confirm from these sources what the stack upgrades do in numbers, so check the recipe viewer for that.[2][3]

If you also use Sophisticated Storage, the pack has recipes that turn that mod's storage upgrades into their backpack versions. Examples include the Alchemy, Blasting and Compacting upgrades.[2]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?

6 parts

Sophisticated Backpacks has no machines, multiblocks or power networks of its own to build. Everything runs through upgrades that you slot into the backpack, and most of them open as their own tab on the backpack screen. This section covers what each upgrade does, based on the mod's in-game descriptions and the pack's recipe list.[2][3]

Watch out: The pack has no config files for this mod that I could read, so I can't confirm any limits, such as how many upgrades fit in one backpack. The mod does have options for maximum upgrades per storage, disallowed items and blocks a backpack won't interact with. Check them in-game before you rely on a specific number.[3]

Storage size: stack upgrades and downgrades

Stack upgrades make each slot hold more stacks. Stack Upgrade Starter Tier multiplies the number of stacks per slot by 1.5, and Stack Upgrade Tier 1 multiplies it by 2. The higher tiers multiply by 4, 8 and 16.[2][3]

Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:stack_upgrade_starter_tier

The pack also has conversion recipes that go from the starter tier to Tier 1 through Tier 4, such as Stack Upgrade Conversion: Starter Tier to Tier 1. Their recipes are shown on the site if you want to check the exact cost.[2]

Stack downgrades do the opposite. Stack Downgrade Tier 1 divides the stacks per slot by 8, Stack Downgrade Tier 2 by 16 and Stack Downgrade Tier 3 by 32.[2][3]

Moving items in and out

Pickup Upgrade makes the backpack pick up items. Filter Upgrade filters items that are piped into or out of the backpack, so it matters for automation with pipes and hoppers.[2][3]

Two upgrades work on other inventories. With Deposit Upgrade, sneak right-clicking an inventory deposits items from the backpack into it. With Restock Upgrade, the same click restocks the backpack from that inventory.[2][3]

Workstations in a tab

Crafting Upgrade, Anvil Upgrade and Smithing Upgrade each bring the matching vanilla station into an upgrade tab on the backpack screen.[2][3]

Compacting Upgrade compacts items into their compressed variants, and the base version only handles 2x2 recipes.[2][3]

Smelting, blasting and smoking

Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade and Smoking Upgrade put a furnace, a blast furnace and a smoker in an upgrade tab. Blasting is for ores and metal items, and smoking is for food.[2][3]

The auto versions, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade, automatically pull and push items. In the pack you can craft them from the auto-smelting upgrade, and the plain Blasting and Smoking upgrades can be crafted from the Smelting Upgrade.[2][3]

Protection and special upgrades

Wearing a backpack around other players

The backpack settings include a toggle for other players. When it's on and your backpack is worn and visible, another player can open it by right-clicking your back. When it's off, they can't, even if the backpack is worn.[3]

How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?

3 parts

Progression for this mod in the pack is about crafting, not questing. The recipes show a ladder of stack upgrades, with function upgrades you add on the side.[2]

Unverified The sources here show no quests for this mod, and it is not on the ATM Star quest path. If you want to know where the quest book mentions backpacks, check the quest chapters in-game.

The stack upgrade ladder

The stack upgrades come in five steps: Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3 and Stack Upgrade Tier 4. Each one has its own crafting recipe in the pack, shown below in order. The Upgrade Base has its own recipe too.[2]

Skipping tiers with conversions

You don't have to climb one step at a time. The pack has conversion recipes that jump up the ladder, for example Stack Upgrade Conversion: Starter Tier to Tier 4 and Stack Upgrade Conversion: Tier 1 to Tier 4. There are conversions from the Starter Tier to Tiers 1, 2, 3 and 4, from Tier 1 to Tiers 2, 3 and 4, from Tier 2 to Tiers 3 and 4, and from Tier 3 to Tier 4.[2]

Going the other way, there are also Stack Downgrade Tier 1, Stack Downgrade Tier 2 and Stack Downgrade Tier 3, each with its own recipe.[2]

Function upgrades and advanced versions

Beyond storage size, the pack has recipes for many function upgrades, such as Crafting Upgrade, Smelting Upgrade, Pickup Upgrade, Feeding Upgrade and Void Upgrade. The smelting line branches too: there are recipes that make the Blasting and Smoking upgrades from a Smelting Upgrade, and the Auto-blasting and Auto-smoking upgrades from an Auto-smelting Upgrade.[2]

The advanced versions, such as Advanced Alchemy Upgrade, are made with the next-tier upgrade recipe type rather than a plain shaped recipe.[2]
