What is YUNG's Better Desert Temples?

3 parts

YUNG's Better Desert Temples is a worldgen mod that completely redesigns Minecraft's desert temples. Instead of the vanilla pyramid, you get a much more exciting structure full of new puzzles, traps and parkour challenges, with much better loot waiting for you at the end.[1]

This pack ships version 1.21.1-NeoForge-4.1.5. The mod was already included in an earlier release, no later than version 2.25 of the pack.[2]

Who it's for

If you enjoy exploring structures, solving puzzles and dodging traps for a loot payoff, this one is for you. Head out into the desert and look for the redesigned temples.[1]

Mining fatigue

By default, every player inside a Better Desert Temple gets mining fatigue. Kill the pharaoh at the end of the temple and the effect is permanently lifted for that temple.[1]

Tip: You can turn off the mining fatigue feature in the mod's config. You can also re-enable vanilla desert temples so they spawn alongside the Better Desert Temples.[1]

Compatibility and progression

The mod is intended to be fully compatible with every worldgen mod. The project page names YUNG's Better Mineshafts, Better Strongholds, Better Dungeons, Extras, Bridges and Repurposed Structures.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm from the sources where this mod fits into the pack's progression. No quests or ATM Star path involvement are shown for it.

How do you get started with YUNG's Better Desert Temples?

2 parts

Good news: there's nothing to craft before you start with this one. YUNG's Better Desert Temples redesigns Minecraft's desert temples, so your first step is to head out into the desert and find one.[1]

Inside, the mod adds a variety of new puzzles, traps and parkour challenges. In return you get much better loot than vanilla desert temples give you.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Find a Better Desert Temple in the desert. Walking into one earns you an advancement for discovering it.[1][3]
  2. Expect mining fatigue as soon as you're inside. By default it's applied to every player in the temple until the temple is cleared, so don't plan on digging your way through.[1][3]
  3. Work through the puzzles, traps and parkour to reach the end of the temple, where the pharaoh waits.[1]
  4. Kill the pharaoh to clear the temple. That permanently lifts the mining fatigue for that temple, and there's an advancement for freeing it from his curse.[1][3]
Watch out: Mining fatigue stays on in an uncleared temple, so you can't just mine your way out of trouble. Plan to finish the temple rather than tunnel through it.[1][3]

Options worth knowing about

The mod has a config option to turn the mining fatigue off. Another option lets vanilla desert pyramids stay enabled, so they can generate alongside the Better Desert Temples.[1][3]

Unverified The sources don't show whether this pack changes either default, so check the config in your own instance before relying on it. They also show no quests or crafting recipes for this mod, so there are no items to make first.

How does YUNG's Better Desert Temples work?

4 parts

Here's the honest picture for this one: YUNG's Better Desert Temples is a worldgen mod. The sources here describe no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation. What it does is redesign vanilla desert temples with puzzles, traps and parkour challenges, and better loot for your trouble.[1]

Mining fatigue and clearing the temple

The one real mechanic is mining fatigue. By default, it is applied to all players in a Better Desert Temple.[1][3]

To lift it, clear the temple by killing the pharaoh at the end. The mining fatigue for that temple is then permanently lifted. The in-game text says the effect applies to players in the temple if it has not yet been cleared.[1][3]

Tip: Work through the temple's puzzles and parkour, then deal with the pharaoh, and the mining fatigue goes away for that temple.[1]

Advancements

The mod adds a small advancement line that follows your progress. The root advancement is described as "Somewhere deep in the desert...". Another is for discovering a Better Desert Temple. The last is for slaying the Pharaoh and freeing the temple from his curse.[3]

Config options

The sources confirm these options. The first is applyMiningFatigue, which controls whether mining fatigue is applied to players in a temple that has not yet been cleared. The second is disableVanillaPyramids, which controls whether vanilla desert pyramids are disabled. The project page says you can turn off the mining fatigue feature, and that you can let vanilla desert temples spawn alongside Better Desert Temples.[1][3]

Unverified The sources here show no config file for this mod in the pack, so we can't confirm whether the pack changes either option from the mod's defaults. The descriptions above are the mod's own, not confirmed pack values.

Worldgen compatibility

The mod is intended to work with every worldgen mod. The project page names several, including YUNG's Better Mineshafts, Better Strongholds, Better Dungeons, Extras and Bridges, as well as Repurposed Structures. Repurposed Structures also has an optional data pack that adds repurposed versions of the desert temples.[1]

What changed in YUNG's Better Desert Temples between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 8.1 ships YUNG's Better Desert Temples 1.21.1-NeoForge-4.1.5. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.25 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modpack.[2]

Version bumps in the pack changelogs

These are the updates the pack changelogs record for this mod. Each one is a plain version bump.[4][5][6]

  • All the Mods 10 2.33: updated from 1.21.1-NeoForge-4.1.2 to 1.21.1-NeoForge-4.1.3.[6]
  • All the Mods 10 2.39: updated from 1.21.1-NeoForge-4.1.3 to 1.21.1-NeoForge-4.1.4.[5]
  • All the Mods 10 2.40: updated from 1.21.1-NeoForge-4.1.4 to 1.21.1-NeoForge-4.1.5, the version still in 8.1.[2][4]

Unverified I don't have the mod's own changelogs for these versions, so what each update actually changed (fixes, structure tweaks, new features) is unverified. The pack changelogs only record the version numbers. Any changes between 4.1.5 and earlier releases, or to the pack's own settings for this mod, are also unconfirmed.
