What is YUNG's Better Desert Temples?

2 parts

YUNG's Better Desert Temples is a complete redesign of Minecraft's desert temples. Instead of the small vanilla pyramid with one hidden loot room, you get a much bigger structure packed with puzzles, traps and parkour challenges. And the payoff is worth it, because the loot is much better than what vanilla desert temples give you.[1]

This mod is for anyone who likes exploring and wants the desert to be more than a place to grab sand and cactus. If you enjoy solving a dungeon on your way to good loot, these temples are a fun detour.[1]

The pharaoh and mining fatigue

By default, every player inside a Better Desert Temple gets mining fatigue, so you can't just dig your way to the treasure. To lift it, you have to clear the temple, which means defeating the pharaoh at the end. After that, the mining fatigue for that temple is gone for good. The mod lets both of these features be changed in its config: mining fatigue can be turned off, and vanilla desert temples can be set to spawn alongside the new ones.[1]

Unverified The sources don't show this pack's config for this mod, so it's unverified whether the pack keeps the default mining fatigue behavior or lets vanilla desert temples spawn too.

Where it fits

This mod is included in the pack as a worldgen mod. It's designed to be compatible with other worldgen mods, including the rest of the YUNG's structure mods like Better Mineshafts, Better Strongholds and Better Dungeons, plus Repurposed Structures.[1][2]

Unverified The sources don't show whether this mod has a role in the pack's progression, such as quests or crafting recipes, beyond adding a desert structure to explore.

How do you get started with YUNG's Better Desert Temples?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing to craft before you start with this one. YUNG's Better Desert Temples redesigns Minecraft's desert temples, so your first step is to head out into the desert and find one.[1]

Inside, the mod adds a variety of new puzzles, traps and parkour challenges. In return you get much better loot than vanilla desert temples give you.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Find a Better Desert Temple in the desert. Walking into one earns you an advancement for discovering it.[1][3]
  2. Expect mining fatigue as soon as you're inside. By default it's applied to every player in the temple until the temple is cleared, so don't plan on digging your way through.[1][3]
  3. Work through the puzzles, traps and parkour to reach the end of the temple, where the pharaoh waits.[1]
  4. Kill the pharaoh to clear the temple. That permanently lifts the mining fatigue for that temple, and there's an advancement for freeing it from his curse.[1][3]
Watch out: Mining fatigue stays on in an uncleared temple, so you can't just mine your way out of trouble. Plan to finish the temple rather than tunnel through it.[1][3]

Options worth knowing about

The mod has a config option to turn the mining fatigue off. Another option lets vanilla desert pyramids stay enabled, so they can generate alongside the Better Desert Temples.[1][3]

Unverified The sources don't show whether this pack changes either default, so check the config in your own instance before relying on it. They also show no quests or crafting recipes for this mod, so there are no items to make first.

How does YUNG's Better Desert Temples work?

4 parts

YUNG's Better Desert Temples is a worldgen mod, not a tech mod. You won't find machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation here. It replaces Minecraft's desert temples with a full redesign, so its core mechanics are about exploring and clearing those temples.[1]

What's inside a temple

Each temple is packed with puzzles, traps and parkour challenges, so be ready for more than the single pressure-plate trap of a vanilla temple. The reward is loot that's much better than what vanilla desert temples give you.[1]

Mining fatigue and the pharaoh

By default, every player inside a Better Desert Temple gets mining fatigue. That means you can't just dig straight through the walls to the loot. You're meant to work your way through the temple properly.[1]

The fatigue only lasts until the temple is cleared. Clearing means killing the pharaoh at the end of the temple. Once you do, the mining fatigue for that temple is lifted permanently. It applies per temple, so each new one you find starts out with fatigue again.[1][4]

Tip: If mining feels painfully slow inside a temple, that's the mod working as intended. Push on to the end and take down the pharaoh, and you can dig freely in that temple afterwards.[1]

Configurable behaviour

The mod has two config options. One controls whether mining fatigue is applied to players in a temple that hasn't been cleared yet. The other controls whether vanilla desert pyramids are disabled. Changing it lets vanilla temples spawn alongside the new ones.[1][4]

Unverified This pack doesn't include a config file for this mod, so its exact settings can't be confirmed. That includes whether mining fatigue is on and whether vanilla desert pyramids still spawn. Assume the mod defaults unless you see otherwise in-game.

Compatibility with other worldgen

The mod is intended to be fully compatible with every worldgen mod. That includes the rest of YUNG's lineup, such as Better Mineshafts, Better Strongholds, Better Dungeons, Extras and Bridges, as well as Repurposed Structures.[1]

Which YUNG's Better Desert Temples config options matter?

2 parts

YUNG's Better Desert Temples only exposes a couple of knobs that most players ever touch, and both of them change how a temple feels to raid rather than how it generates.[1]

Mining fatigue in the temple

By default, mining fatigue is applied to every player inside a Better Desert Temple, so you can't just tunnel straight to the loot. Once you clear the temple by killing the pharaoh at the end, the mining fatigue for that temple is permanently lifted. If you'd rather dig your way through, this feature can be disabled in the config.[1]

Vanilla desert temples

The other option worth knowing about lets you re-enable vanilla desert temples so they spawn alongside the Better Desert Temples, instead of being fully replaced.[1]

Unverified The exact values this pack uses for these options, and whether it changes them from the mod's defaults, could not be confirmed from the available sources. Check the mod's config in your instance folder before assuming either behaviour has been altered.

Tip: If you're leaving mining fatigue on, plan to fight your way to the pharaoh rather than mine through walls, killing him is what permanently removes the effect for that temple.[1]

What changed in YUNG's Better Desert Temples between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10 2.11 ships YUNG's Better Desert Temples version 1.21.1-NeoForge-4.1.2. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 1.0 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs.[2]

4.1.2

  • The minimum version requirements were lowered, so the mod works on both 1.21 and 1.21.1.[5]

4.1.0

This was the port to 1.21.1, and it brought plenty of changes to the temples themselves:[6]

  • Lots of small bugs in the puzzle pieces were fixed.[6]
  • Floors got new block randomization, and there is a new entrance hall piece.[6]
  • Chests in some storage rooms now use vanilla loot tables. Up to 4 additional vanilla loot chests can now spawn per temple.[6]
  • The redstone circuits for puzzles are now buried in sandstone.[6]
  • The books in the book puzzle were renamed to better hint at the solution.[6]
  • The shooting gallery puzzle now plays the success jingle once instead of twice.[6]
  • All structure NBT files were updated.[6]
