YUNG's Better Desert Temples in All the Mods 10

YUNG's Better Desert Temples completely redesigns Minecraft's desert temples. Instead of the simple vanilla pyramid, you get a variety of new puzzles, traps and parkour challenges, and the loot is much better than what vanilla desert temples give you.^[1]

Mining fatigue and the pharaoh

By default, every player inside a Better Desert Temple gets mining fatigue, so you can't just dig your way through. Kill the pharaoh at the end of the temple and the effect is permanently lifted for that temple.^[1]

Both of these are configurable. You can turn the mining fatigue feature off in the mod's config, and you can also let vanilla desert temples spawn alongside the Better Desert Temples.^[1]

In this pack

The pack ships version 1.21.1-NeoForge-4.1.5 of the mod, and it has been part of the pack since All the Mods 10 1.0 or earlier.^[2]

The mod is built to work with other worldgen mods, including YUNG's Better Mineshafts, Better Strongholds, Better Dungeons, Extras and Bridges, as well as Repurposed Structures.^[1]

Good news: there's nothing to craft before you start with this one. YUNG's Better Desert Temples redesigns Minecraft's desert temples, so your first step is to head out into the desert and find one.^[1]

Inside, the mod adds a variety of new puzzles, traps and parkour challenges. In return you get much better loot than vanilla desert temples give you.^[1]

Your first steps

1. Find a Better Desert Temple in the desert. Walking into one earns you an advancement for discovering it.^[1][3]
2. Expect mining fatigue as soon as you're inside. By default it's applied to every player in the temple until the temple is cleared, so don't plan on digging your way through.^[1][3]
3. Work through the puzzles, traps and parkour to reach the end of the temple, where the pharaoh waits.^[1]
4. Kill the pharaoh to clear the temple. That permanently lifts the mining fatigue for that temple, and there's an advancement for freeing it from his curse.^[1][3]

Options worth knowing about

The mod has a config option to turn the mining fatigue off. Another option lets vanilla desert pyramids stay enabled, so they can generate alongside the Better Desert Temples.^[1][3]

Unverified The sources don't show whether this pack changes either default, so check the config in your own instance before relying on it. They also show no quests or crafting recipes for this mod, so there are no items to make first.

This mod has no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation to learn. It is a worldgen mod that redesigns desert temples with puzzles, traps and parkour challenges, and it gives better loot than vanilla temples. So the mechanics that matter are how the temple generates and how its mining fatigue works.^[1]

Mining fatigue and clearing the temple

By default, mining fatigue is applied to every player inside a Better Desert Temple. Kill the pharaoh at the end and the effect is permanently lifted for that temple. The mod's own text describes the same rule: slay the Pharaoh and free the temple from his curse.^[1][3]

The mining fatigue is tied to a structure tag that lists the temple structure, so it applies to that structure and nothing else. The mod's language file describes an option for whether fatigue is applied in a temple that has not yet been cleared.^[3][4]

Config options

The project page says you can turn the mining fatigue feature off in the config. You can also re-enable vanilla desert temples so they spawn alongside the Better Desert Temples. The language file describes the second option as whether vanilla desert pyramids should be disabled.^[1][3]

Unverified This pack has no config file listed for this mod, so the pack's actual values for these options are unconfirmed.

Where temples generate

Temples are allowed in the vanilla desert biome. Several modded desert biomes are also listed as optional entries, so they only count when those mods are present: terralith:lush_desert, biomesoplenty:lush_desert, and projectvibrantjourneys:desert_shrubland and projectvibrantjourneys:verdant_sands. The tags for the Forge desert and common desert biomes are optional as well.^[5]

Temples are placed with a spacing of 30 and a separation of 20. They also keep an exclusion zone of 6 chunks from villages, so a temple will not sit right next to one.^[6]

How a temple is built

The temple is a jigsaw structure generated through YUNG's API, with a size of 20 and a maximum distance from its center of 116. It generates in the surface structures step, and its start height is picked between -24 and -4 relative to the world surface heightmap. In practice that means most of it sits underground.^[7]

Pieces are picked from weighted template pools, so no two temples need to be the same. A few examples from the pools:^{[8][9][10][11][12]}

• The entrance hall pool has two variants, with weights of 4 and 1, so one is much more common. The entrance doorway pool has four equally weighted variants.^[8][9]
• The long straight hall room pool mixes parkour rooms with three water maze rooms. The water maze rooms are capped at a max count of 1.^[10]
• The wipeout room has a fallback version with no left wall, used when the normal one cannot be placed.^[13][14]
• The middle end hall pool includes an empty variant, and the hall wall pool includes a forced variant.^[11][12]
• A mobs pool holds a creeper, a slime and the pharaoh.^[15]
• A slopes pool provides a slope piece and a floored version of it.^[16]

Every piece runs through the same processor list. It swaps in the temple's decorative blocks and mobs, including a dedicated pharaoh processor. It also turns any tinted glass into sandstone.^[17]

Mobs that spawn in the temple

The structure overrides natural spawns inside its pieces. For monsters it uses husks, with a weight of 100 and groups of 10 to 32. For creatures it uses cats and rabbits, each with a weight of 100 and groups of exactly 4.^[7]

No recipes produce this mod's items, so there is nothing to craft here. The rewards are the temple loot and clearing the curse.^[1]

Here is where the temple spawns: its biome tag includes the desert biome. It can also appear in other desert-type biomes, including Terralith's lush desert, Biomes O' Plenty's lush desert, and Project Vibrant Journeys' desert shrubland and verdant sands. The sources here do not show any tiers for it, so the sections below go chest by chest.^[5]

Food storage chest

This chest rolls several times, and most of its entries are common: potatoes, wheat, bread, dried kelp, honey bottles, beetroot soup and melon seeds. Poisonous potatoes show up too, but less often. Golden Apple and Enchanted Golden Apple are the rare finds, each with a much lower weight than the common entries.^[18]

Library chest

The library chest also rolls several times. Books and paper make up most of what you will find, and a map and a compass can turn up as well. There are also enchanted books at different enchanting strengths, but they have a low weight, so treat them as a bonus.^[19]

Hidden pharaoh chest

The hidden pharaoh chest holds one Golden Sword that is enchanted from the random loot pool and also carries the vanishing curse. The rest of the chest is Sand.^[20]

Unverified The temple has other loot tables (lab, pot, statue, storage, tomb, pharaoh tomb and wardrobe chests, among others). Their contents live in the mod's data files, and the sources here do not show them.

All the Mods 10 8.2 ships YUNG's Better Desert Temples version 4.1.5 for NeoForge 1.21.1. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 1.0 or earlier. Here is what changed along the way, starting with the pack updates that moved the mod forward.^[2]

Pack updates

• All the Mods 10 2.33 updated the mod from 4.1.2 to 4.1.3.^[21]
• All the Mods 10 2.39 updated it from 4.1.3 to 4.1.4.^[22]
• All the Mods 10 2.40 updated it from 4.1.4 to 4.1.5, which is the version you have in 8.2.^[2][23]

What the mod's own changelogs say

Version 4.1.0 was the port to 1.21.1. It fixed lots of small bugs in puzzle pieces, added new block randomization to floors and added a new entrance hall piece. The redstone circuits for puzzles are now buried in sandstone. The shooting gallery puzzle now plays its success jingle once instead of twice, and all structure NBT files were updated.^[24]

Loot and hints also changed in 4.1.0. Chests in some storage rooms now use vanilla loot tables, and up to 4 additional vanilla loot chests can spawn per temple. The books in the book puzzle were renamed to hint better at the solution.^[24]

• 4.1.2: lowered the minimum version requirements so the mod works on both 1.21 and 1.21.1.^[25]
• 4.1.3: temple mining fatigue now clears instantly when the pharaoh is discarded for any reason, including despawning because of peaceful mode.^[26]
• 4.1.4: advancement lang entries now use proper keys with English fallbacks. The changelog also lists a Fabric fix for modded blocks and items not working with the extra JSON config files.^[27]
