What is YUNG's Better Desert Temples?

3 parts

YUNG's Better Desert Temples completely redesigns Minecraft's desert temples. Instead of the small vanilla pyramid with one hidden loot room, you get a much bigger temple packed with puzzles, traps and parkour challenges. The loot at the end is also much better than what vanilla desert temples give you.[1]

How the temples work

By default, you get mining fatigue while you're inside one of these temples, so you can't just dig straight to the treasure. You have to play through it. Clear the temple by defeating the pharaoh at the end, and the mining fatigue for that temple is lifted permanently.[1]

The mod's config can turn off the mining fatigue. It can also let vanilla desert temples spawn alongside the new ones.[1]

Unverified The sources don't show whether this pack changes these config defaults or the temple loot, so check in-game before you count on either.

Who it's for

This mod is for you if you like exploring and want structures that give a real challenge and a real reward. The mod is designed to be compatible with other worldgen mods, including the rest of the YUNG's structure series and Repurposed Structures.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

This pack includes version 4.1.2 of the mod for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1, and it has been part of the pack since version 1.0 or earlier.[2]

Unverified No quests in this pack involve the mod, and it isn't on the ATM Star path. You can treat these temples as optional exploration and a source of early loot, not a required step in your progression.

How do you get started with YUNG's Better Desert Temples?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing to craft before you start with this one. YUNG's Better Desert Temples redesigns Minecraft's desert temples, so your first step is to head out into the desert and find one.[1]

Inside, the mod adds a variety of new puzzles, traps and parkour challenges. In return you get much better loot than vanilla desert temples give you.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Find a Better Desert Temple in the desert. Walking into one earns you an advancement for discovering it.[1][3]
  2. Expect mining fatigue as soon as you're inside. By default it's applied to every player in the temple until the temple is cleared, so don't plan on digging your way through.[1][3]
  3. Work through the puzzles, traps and parkour to reach the end of the temple, where the pharaoh waits.[1]
  4. Kill the pharaoh to clear the temple. That permanently lifts the mining fatigue for that temple, and there's an advancement for freeing it from his curse.[1][3]
Watch out: Mining fatigue stays on in an uncleared temple, so you can't just mine your way out of trouble. Plan to finish the temple rather than tunnel through it.[1][3]

Options worth knowing about

The mod has a config option to turn the mining fatigue off. Another option lets vanilla desert pyramids stay enabled, so they can generate alongside the Better Desert Temples.[1][3]

Unverified The sources don't show whether this pack changes either default, so check the config in your own instance before relying on it. They also show no quests or crafting recipes for this mod, so there are no items to make first.

How does YUNG's Better Desert Temples work?

4 parts

YUNG's Better Desert Temples has no machines, power or automation. It's a structure mod that redesigns vanilla desert temples into something much more exciting, with puzzles, traps and parkour challenges to work through. You also get much better loot than a vanilla desert temple gives you.[1]

Mining fatigue and clearing a temple

By default, the mod gives mining fatigue to every player inside a Better Desert Temple. You can't just tunnel your way to the loot, so the temple pushes you through its intended route.[1]

To get rid of the effect, you need to clear the temple, which means killing the pharaoh at the end. Once you do, the mining fatigue for that temple is lifted permanently.[1]

A config option controls whether mining fatigue is applied to players in a temple that hasn't been cleared yet, so the whole feature can be turned off.[1][4]

Tip: Clearing one temple only lifts the mining fatigue for that temple. The next temple you find has to be cleared all over again, pharaoh included.[1]

Vanilla desert pyramids

The mod also has a config option that decides whether vanilla desert pyramids are disabled. The project page describes turning vanilla desert temples back on as re-enabling them, so they can spawn alongside the Better Desert Temples.[1][4]

Unverified The sources don't show this pack's own values for the mining fatigue and vanilla pyramid options. It's unconfirmed whether this pack keeps the mod's default behaviour for either one.

Armor stand gear

This pack's armor stand config splits the gear into two groups, armory and wardrobe, with a separate list for helmets, chestplates, leggings and boots. Each list gives every armor piece a value, and every slot's default item is set to air. For example, armory helmets use armoryHelmets.defaultItem.[5]

  • Armory slots: every piece has chainmail at 0.3 and gold at 0.2. For example, Chainmail Helmet is 0.3 and Golden Helmet is 0.2, and the chestplate, leggings and boots lists follow the same pattern.[5]
  • Wardrobe slots: every piece has leather at 0.4 and chainmail at 0.2. For example, Leather Chestplate is 0.4 and Chainmail Chestplate is 0.2, with the same values for helmets, leggings and boots.[5]

Item frame contents

Item frames work the same way in this pack. The config has two lists, armoury items and storage items, and each one uses air as its default item.[6]

Unverified The sources don't explain exactly how these armor stand and item frame values are used, for example whether they're per-slot chances or weights. They also don't say whether this pack changed any of them from the mod's defaults.

Which YUNG's Better Desert Temples config options matter?

3 parts

This mod ships two decoration config files in this pack, both in its own config folder: one for the armor stands scattered around the temple, and one for the item frames. They control which items show up on the temple's display props, so they're the settings most likely to matter to you if you want the temple to feel richer (or emptier) before you go explore it.[5][6]

Armor stands

The armor stand file splits into two sets of slots: the armoury stands and the wardrobe stands, each with separate helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots lists. In this pack every one of those eight lists uses a default item of air, so any slot that doesn't roll an entry is simply left bare.[5]

Item frames

The item frame file has two lists, armouryItems and storageItems, and both also use air as the default item, so empty frames are normal in this pack.[6]

Tip: If you want temples to look more decorated, raise the numbers on the entries you care about in these two files; if you'd rather have bare props, the air defaults are already doing that work for anything that doesn't roll an entry.[5][6]

Mining fatigue and vanilla temples

The mod applies mining fatigue to all players inside a Better Desert Temple by default, and lifts it permanently for that temple once you kill the pharaoh at the end. The mod also offers config toggles to disable that mining fatigue feature and to re-enable vanilla desert temples spawning alongside the reworked ones.[1]

Unverified The sources available here don't include the config file that holds the mining fatigue and vanilla-temple toggles, so how this pack sets them is unconfirmed. Check the mod's config folder in-game before assuming either one has been changed.

What changed in YUNG's Better Desert Temples between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10 2.12 ships YUNG's Better Desert Temples 1.21.1-NeoForge-4.1.2. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 1.0 or earlier, so you've probably been exploring these temples for a while. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs.[2]

4.1.2

  • Minimum version requirements were lowered so the mod works on both 1.21 and 1.21.1.[7]

4.1.0

This was the port to 1.21.1, and it brought a good number of changes to the temples themselves:[8]

  • Lots of small bugs in the puzzle pieces were fixed.[8]
  • Floors now get new block randomization.[8]
  • There is a new entrance hall piece.[8]
  • Chests in some storage rooms now use vanilla loot tables, and up to 4 additional vanilla loot chests can spawn per temple.[8]
  • The redstone circuits for puzzles are now buried in sandstone.[8]
  • The books in the book puzzle were renamed to hint at the solution better.[8]
  • The shooting gallery puzzle now plays the success jingle once instead of twice.[8]
  • All structure NBT files were updated.[8]
Tip: If you're hunting for loot, the 4.1.0 change means a temple can hold up to 4 extra vanilla loot chests, so check the storage rooms.[8]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so any changes the pack itself made to the temples are unverified.
