What is Sophisticated Storage In Motion?

Sophisticated Storage In Motion is part of the pack. This pack ships version 0.10.18, built for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 2.16 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modpack and not a recent addition.[1]

Unverified I don't have a source describing what Sophisticated Storage In Motion adds, who it's best suited for, or how its features behave in this pack, so I'm not guessing. The pack's recipes, config options and any changes to the mod's defaults aren't covered here either.

Unverified I found no source that places this mod on the ATM Star path or ties it to any quest in this pack, so I can't say where it fits in the progression. Check in-game before assuming it's gated by a quest.

How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage In Motion?

3 parts

This mod puts Sophisticated Storage containers on the move. In this pack it adds two items: the Storage Boat and the Storage Minecart. Everything below comes from the pack's recipes, so you can follow it in order.[2]

First: make a storage boat

The base recipe combines a vanilla boat with a Sophisticated Storage container, and the result is a boat carrying that container. There is one recipe per wood type, and bamboo uses a raft. Here is the oak version:[2]

Every other wood type has its own matching recipe in the pack.

If you already have a vanilla chest boat, you can convert it instead. The result is a boat carrying a Sophisticated Storage chest, and again there is one recipe per wood type.[2]

Next: make a storage minecart

For rails, the pack has a recipe that turns a vanilla chest minecart into a storage minecart carrying a Sophisticated Storage chest.[2]

Then: upgrade the container tier

You don't need to rebuild a boat to get a better container. The pack has tier-upgrade recipes that turn a storage boat into one carrying the next tier of container. The chain runs copper, iron, gold, diamond, then netherite, and each step uses the next material up. Chests, barrels and shulker boxes all have these recipes, and so do the limited barrels.[2]

Further up the chain, a gold chest becomes a diamond chest.

Tip: Start with the plain boat or minecart recipes, then upgrade the container as you find better materials. That way you never have to rebuild the boat.[2]

How does Sophisticated Storage In Motion work?

2 parts

This mod is about taking Sophisticated Storage on the move. The recipes the pack shows for it produce a Storage Boat and a Storage Minecart. Everything below comes from the pack's recipe list, so it covers how you get and upgrade these vehicles, not how they behave once placed.[2]

Getting a storage vehicle

You can convert a vanilla chest vehicle. The pack has conversion recipes for the vanilla chest boat in each wood type, including the bamboo chest raft, and for the vanilla chest minecart. Each one gives you a Sophisticated Storage chest-type vehicle. Here are the oak boat version and the minecart version:[2]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: sophisticatedstorageinmotion:chest_minecart_to_storage_minecart

You can also build a boat from a plain boat and a storage block. These recipes use a mod-specific recipe type, moving_storage_from_storage, and accept anything in the Sophisticated Storage all-storage tag, so your boat isn't limited to chests. The barrel-based boats in the upgrade recipes below show that barrels work too. The wood types listed are acacia, bamboo (a raft), birch, cherry, dark oak, jungle, mangrove, oak and spruce.[2]

The item name is a template that gets filled in with the boat's wood type and the storage it carries, so each boat is named after what you built it from.[2]

Upgrading a storage boat's tier

You can upgrade the storage on a boat by crafting, using a dedicated recipe type called moving_storage_tier_upgrade_shaped_recipe. In the recipes shown, a boat carrying a barrel can be upgraded to an iron barrel or a copper barrel, and a boat carrying a chest can be upgraded to a copper chest. The metal comes from any ingot in the matching common tag, so it isn't limited to one mod's ingot.[2]

Tip: If you already have vanilla chest boats or a chest minecart lying around, the conversion recipes let you reuse them as storage vehicles instead of crafting from scratch.[2]

How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage In Motion?

3 parts

Progression with this mod is all about recipes, and the path is simple: get a storage vehicle, then climb the container tiers on it, from copper up to netherite.[2]

Step 1: Get a storage vehicle

The easiest way in is to convert a vanilla vehicle. A vanilla chest boat of any wood type (including the bamboo chest raft) plus a redstone torch becomes a Storage Boat carrying a Sophisticated Storage chest. A vanilla chest minecart plus a redstone torch becomes a Storage Minecart the same way. Both are shapeless crafts.[2]

Oak is the example here. Every other wood type has its own matching recipe.

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: sophisticatedstorageinmotion:chest_minecart_to_storage_minecart

If you already have Sophisticated Storage containers, you can go the other way. Combine a plain boat of any wood type with any block from the mod's all-storage tag, and you get a storage boat carrying that container. This works for the bamboo raft too.[2]

Again, each wood type has its own version of this recipe.

Step 2: Climb the tiers

The mod adds upgrade recipes that turn a storage boat carrying one tier of container into a storage boat carrying the next. The tiers in these recipes run: basic, copper, iron, gold, diamond, netherite.[2]

  • Basic to copper: a shaped recipe that uses a copper ingot, giving you a Copper Chest or Copper Barrel on the boat.[2]
  • Basic to iron, or copper to iron: both are shaped recipes that use an iron ingot.[2]
  • Iron to gold: a shaped recipe that uses a gold ingot.[2]
  • Gold to diamond: a shaped recipe that uses a diamond.[2]
  • Diamond to netherite: a shapeless recipe that uses a netherite ingot, unlike the shaped recipes at the lower tiers.[2]

Barrels, limited barrels and shulker boxes

Barrels follow the same ladder as chests: basic to copper or iron, copper to iron, then gold, diamond and netherite, each with its own recipe and the same ingredient type per step.[2]

Limited barrels (I to IV) have their own upgrade recipes. For all four sizes, a basic limited barrel can go to copper or to iron, a copper one to iron, and a diamond one to netherite. The gold to diamond step is confirmed for the limited barrel I.[2]

Shulker boxes on storage boats can be upgraded too. The recipes confirmed here cover copper to iron, iron to gold, gold to diamond, and diamond to netherite.[2]

Unverified The sources here do not show any quest chapter that covers this mod, so where it falls in the pack's quest book is unverified. Check the quest book in game if you want to see whether it is mentioned.

How does Sophisticated Storage In Motion work with other mods?

2 parts

In this pack, the recipes that connect Sophisticated Storage In Motion with other content link it to vanilla Minecraft and to the base Sophisticated Storage items. They fall into two groups: turning vanilla chest vehicles into storage vehicles, and upgrading the storage tier of a vehicle you already have.[2]

Converting vanilla chest vehicles

You don't have to start from scratch. Each vanilla chest boat has its own conversion recipe: acacia, birch, cherry, dark oak, jungle, mangrove, oak and spruce, plus the bamboo chest raft. The Chest Minecart has one too. The result is a Storage Boat or a Storage Minecart, and each of these recipes also lists a Chest as an output. All of them are shapeless recipes.[2]

Upgrading storage tiers on a vehicle

Storage boats and storage minecarts can be upgraded to a higher tier of Sophisticated Storage block without being rebuilt. The pack uses a dedicated tier-upgrade recipe type for this, and it moves a vehicle up through copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite.[2]

The upgrade materials are shared tags rather than one specific item, so any matching item from another mod counts. The tags are copper ingots, iron ingots, gold ingots, diamonds and netherite ingots. The steps up to diamond are shaped recipes, and the step to netherite is shapeless.[2]
