What is Sophisticated Storage In Motion?

Sophisticated Storage In Motion is one of the mods bundled in this pack. The pack ships version 0.7.4, built for Minecraft 1.21.1 (jar file sophisticatedstorageinmotion-1.21.1-0.7.4.43.jar).[1]

It has been in the pack for a while: it was first included in version 2.16 or earlier. If you're updating an older world, the mod was most likely already there.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what this mod does or who it's best for, so I'm not guessing at its features or mechanics. They also don't show any quests for it or a place for it on the ATM Star path, so treat its progression role as unconfirmed.

How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage In Motion?

2 parts

Sophisticated Storage In Motion is built around one item, the Storage Minecart. The rest of the mod's recipes in this pack are upgrades of that cart, so here is the order I'd go in.[2]

Step 1: Make your first storage minecart

The base recipe is a special mod recipe that works with any Sophisticated Storage container. The cart then carries that container, which is why the upgrade recipes later are named things like "storage minecart with chest" or "storage minecart with barrel".[2]

Recipe id: sophisticatedstorageinmotion:storage_minecart

The main recipe, which turns the container you choose into a storage minecart.

If you already have a vanilla chest minecart on a rail line, you don't have to start over. There is a separate shapeless recipe that converts it into a storage minecart carrying a Sophisticated Storage chest.[2]

The conversion recipe for an existing chest minecart.

Step 2: Upgrade the cart through the tiers

You don't need to rebuild a cart to improve it. The pack has tier-upgrade recipes that turn a storage minecart into the next tier of the same container. These exist for chests, barrels, shulker boxes and the Limited Barrel variants.[2]

  1. Start with a plain chest or barrel cart and upgrade it to copper or iron. A copper cart can also be upgraded to iron.[2]
  2. Move from iron up to gold.[2]
  3. Go from gold to diamond next.[2]
  4. Finish with diamond to netherite, which uses a shapeless recipe instead of a shaped one.[2]

Tip: The upgrade recipes are named for the container type and the tiers they connect, so look for the matching pair, for example copper chest to iron chest, or gold barrel to diamond barrel.[2]

How does Sophisticated Storage In Motion work?

2 parts

The sources for this mod only cover crafting, so this section is about how you get a storage minecart and move it up the tiers. They don't explain how the carts behave in play, so nothing about inventory, automation or power is covered here.[2]

Making a storage minecart

The Storage Minecart is built with a special recipe type that turns a Sophisticated Storage block into a minecart version of itself. The recipe accepts anything in the Sophisticated Storage "all storage" tag, so it isn't limited to one kind of storage block.[2]

Moving Storage From Storage (sophisticatedstorageinmotion)

Recipe id: sophisticatedstorageinmotion:storage_minecart

The general recipe for turning a Sophisticated Storage block into a storage minecart.

If you already have a vanilla chest minecart, you don't have to start over. A separate shapeless recipe converts it into a storage minecart carrying a Sophisticated Storage chest.[2]

Upgrading tiers without leaving the cart

You can upgrade a storage minecart to the next material tier by crafting it with the matching material. You don't need to take the storage block out first. Each upgrade has its own recipe, and the result is still a storage minecart.[2]

The recipes in the sources show these upgrade steps for chests and barrels:[2]

  • Basic chest or barrel to Copper[2]
  • Basic chest or barrel to Iron, so you can skip Copper[2]
  • Copper to Iron[2]
  • Iron to Gold[2]
  • Gold to Diamond[2]
  • Diamond to Netherite[2]

Shulker box carts follow the same ladder for the steps shown: Copper to Iron, Iron to Gold, Gold to Diamond and Diamond to Netherite. There is also at least one recipe for the limited barrels, which takes a Limited Barrel I to a Limited Copper Barrel I.[2]

8 × any gold ingot

Recipe id: sophisticatedstorageinmotion:storage_minecart_with_iron_chest_to_gold_chest

Example upgrade: an Iron Chest cart becomes a Gold Chest cart.

Most upgrades are shaped recipes. The Diamond to Netherite upgrades are shapeless instead, so the layout doesn't matter there. Open the recipe for each step to see its exact in-pack ingredients.[2]

Moving Storage Tier Upgrade Shapeless Recipe (sophisticatedstorageinmotion)

  • any netherite ingot

Example of a shapeless upgrade: a Diamond Chest cart becomes a Netherite Chest cart.

Tip: The recipe list I had was cut off, with 25 more recipes not shown. Check the recipe viewer for your exact cart before you plan an upgrade path.[2]

How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage In Motion?

3 parts

There's no separate crafting tree to climb here. Progression is the Sophisticated Storage tier ladder, but on a minecart. You craft one Storage Minecart and then upgrade it tier by tier, with each upgrade recipe giving you a storage minecart back.[2]

Step 1: Get a storage minecart

The base recipe takes a regular minecart and any Sophisticated Storage block, and gives you a storage minecart. Here's what the pack uses:[2]

Moving Storage From Storage (sophisticatedstorageinmotion)

Recipe id: sophisticatedstorageinmotion:storage_minecart

Works with any block from the Sophisticated Storage all_storage tag.

There's also a shortcut if you already have a vanilla chest minecart. A shapeless recipe turns it into a storage minecart with a Sophisticated Storage chest.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: sophisticatedstorageinmotion:chest_minecart_to_storage_minecart

Shapeless recipe from a vanilla chest minecart.

Step 2: Climb the tiers

Chests, barrels and shulker boxes all follow the same ladder: Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, then Netherite. Each upgrade has its own recipe that takes a storage minecart of one tier and gives you a storage minecart of the next.[2]

  • Entry points: a basic chest, barrel or shulker box cart can go to Copper, or jump straight to Iron.[2]
  • Copper carts go to Iron.[2]
  • Iron carts go to Gold.[2]
  • Gold carts go to Diamond.[2]
  • Diamond carts go to Netherite.[2]

Here's the chest line as an example. The barrel and shulker box lines follow the same pattern.[2]

  • any netherite ingot

Recipe id: sophisticatedstorageinmotion:storage_minecart_with_diamond_chest_to_netherite_chest

Diamond chest cart to Netherite chest cart.

Tip: The Diamond to Netherite cart upgrades are shapeless recipes, while the earlier steps are shaped. So for the Netherite step you don't need a specific layout.[2]

Limited barrels

Limited barrels (I to IV) have their own cart upgrade recipes too. Each of the four limited barrel sizes follows the same Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, Netherite ladder as the regular barrels. A basic limited barrel cart can also go to Copper or straight to Iron.[2]

How does Sophisticated Storage In Motion work with other mods?

2 parts

Sophisticated Storage In Motion puts storage on rails, so its connections in this pack are with vanilla Minecraft and with the base Sophisticated Storage mod. Every recipe in the dump that involves this mod is either a vanilla minecart conversion or a tier upgrade for a storage minecart, and the upgrade materials are common tags rather than items from one specific mod.[2]

From a vanilla minecart to a storage minecart

The way in is a shapeless recipe that turns a vanilla Chest Minecart into a Storage Minecart carrying a Chest. A Redstone Torch is part of that conversion.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

This shapeless recipe turns a vanilla chest minecart into a storage minecart.

Upgrading the cart through Sophisticated Storage tiers

Once you have a storage minecart, you can upgrade the storage block it carries. The mod adds its own recipe types for this, and each recipe gives you a storage minecart holding the next tier of the matching Sophisticated Storage block.[2]

The upgrades cover chests, barrels, Limited barrels (I to IV) and shulker boxes. Chests and barrels go up through copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite, for example Iron Chest to Gold Chest, or Gold Barrel to Diamond Barrel. Shulker boxes are covered too, such as Gold Shulker Box to Diamond Shulker Box.[2]

Moving Storage Tier Upgrade Shaped Recipe (sophisticatedstorageinmotion)

8 × any gold ingot

Recipe id: sophisticatedstorageinmotion:storage_minecart_with_iron_chest_to_gold_chest

One example of a tier upgrade on a cart, using a shaped upgrade recipe.

The last step, diamond to netherite, uses a different recipe type from the lower tiers. It is shapeless, while the earlier tiers are shaped. It applies to chests, barrels, shulker boxes and Limited barrels alike.[2]

Moving Storage Tier Upgrade Shapeless Recipe (sophisticatedstorageinmotion)

  • any netherite ingot

Recipe id: sophisticatedstorageinmotion:storage_minecart_with_diamond_chest_to_netherite_chest

The netherite step is a shapeless upgrade recipe.

Tip: The upgrade materials are listed as shared common tags (copper, iron, gold and netherite ingots, and diamond gems) rather than one fixed item. The recipes accept any item in the tag, but the sources here do not show which mods' items are in those tags.[2]
