What is Crafting Tweaks?

1 part

Crafting Tweaks is a pure quality-of-life mod: it adds a row of buttons to crafting grids that let you rotate, balance or clear the grid with a single click. It shows up in many supported crafting tables, including plenty of modded ones, so it quietly improves nearly every crafting interface you open.[1]

The pack ships version 21.1.2 for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1, and it has been part of the pack since at least the 0.32 release, so if you have played an earlier version you have probably been using it without noticing.[2]

What you actually get

  • Rotate the outer ring of the crafting grid, which is great for flipping a stairs or tool recipe around without picking everything back up.[1]
  • Balance the materials already in the grid to even stack sizes, and hold shift on that button to spread a single stack across the whole grid.[1]
  • Clear the grid straight back into your inventory in one click.[1]
  • Hold the W key while clicking an item to transfer it into the grid, or Shift+W to move everything of that type.[1]
  • Right-click the result slot to craft a full stack at once.[1]
  • Use the compress keybind to instantly turn stacks into their 3x3 or 2x2 recipe result, or back into block and ingot forms.[1]

There is nothing to unlock and nothing to build. The features are there the moment you open a supported crafting table, which makes this one of the mods you will lean on hardest during the mid-game grind of compressing resources and mass-crafting components.[1]

Tip: Crafting Tweaks needs Balm installed alongside it, and it is bi-optional: if a server does not have it, players who do will still get the buttons on their own client.[1]

How do you get started with Crafting Tweaks?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 6.6 guide

Crafting Tweaks doesn't give you a shopping list of new items. Instead, it adds buttons to many supported crafting tables so you can quickly rotate, balance or clear the crafting grid. Getting started here means learning what those buttons and shortcuts do, not crafting anything first.[1]

The mod works with lots of modded crafting tables, not just the vanilla one. So once you learn these tricks on a regular crafting table, you can use them on many other tables too.[1]

Your first few minutes with it

  1. Open a crafting table and look for the extra buttons next to the grid. These are how you use the mod.[1]
  2. Use the rotate button to spin the outer circle of the crafting grid. This helps when a recipe is placed correctly but facing the wrong way.[1]
  3. Use the balance button to spread your materials evenly so every slot has the same stack size. Hold shift while pressing it to spread a single stack across the whole grid.[1]
  4. Use the clear button to move everything in the grid back into your inventory.[1]
  5. Right-click the result slot to craft a full stack at once instead of clicking over and over.[1]
  6. To move items into the grid, hold the W key while clicking them. Shift plus W moves all items of that type.[1]
  7. Try the compress keybind. It turns stacks of items into their 3x3 or 2x2 recipe results, for example ingots into blocks, and it can also decompress them.[1]
Watch out: One of the clear functions has a tooltip saying it drops items if necessary. If your inventory is full, check the ground after you clear a grid so you don't lose anything.[3]

Settings worth knowing about

  • The mode setting decides how you use the mod: DEFAULT turns on both buttons and hotkeys, BUTTONS gives buttons only, HOTKEYS gives hotkeys only, and DISABLED turns everything off.[3]
  • Hide Vanilla Crafting Guide hides the vanilla crafting book button instead of moving it. Handy if you use JEI for recipes anyway.[3]
  • A client setting controls whether right-clicking the result slot in a crafting table crafts a full stack.[3]
  • The compress key skips any items on a denylist of modid:name entries. If compressing does nothing on a certain item, this list may be why.[3]
  • By default, compress and decompress only work inside crafting screens. A setting lets them work outside crafting screens as well, but only in the player inventory and only if the mod is installed on the server.[3]
  • You can list mod ids to turn off Crafting Tweaks support for specific mods if their crafting tables act strangely.[3]

The mod is bi-optional: only the players who want it need to install it, and it still works for them if the server doesn't have it. It requires the Balm library alongside it.[1]

Unverified The sources don't confirm the values All the Mods 10 6.6 uses for these settings, such as the mode or the right-click stack crafting option, or whether the pack changes the default keybinds. If a button or key doesn't do what's described here, check your Controls menu and the Crafting Tweaks config in your own install.

How does Crafting Tweaks work?

4 parts

Crafting Tweaks doesn't add machines, multiblocks or power. It's a quality-of-life mod that works entirely inside crafting GUIs: it adds a row of buttons to supported crafting tables, plus keybinds, that let you rotate, balance or clear the grid instantly instead of dragging items around by hand.[1]

It also hooks into many modded crafting tables, not just the vanilla one, so the same buttons show up in the workbenches you get from other mods in the pack.[1]

The mod is bi-optional. Only players who want it need to install it, and if the server doesn't have it, it still works for the people who do have it on their client. A couple of features are the exception and need the server side, which is covered below.[1][3]

It requires Balm, which must be installed alongside it.[1]

The grid buttons

  • Rotate moves the outer ring of the crafting grid around by one slot, which is great for fixing a pattern you laid out one slot off.[1]
  • Balance evens out the stack sizes of the materials already sitting in the grid.[1]
  • Holding shift while clicking balance instead spreads a single stack evenly over the whole grid.[1]
  • Clear dumps everything in the grid back into your inventory.[1]
Watch out: The clear function will drop items if it has to, so make sure you have inventory space before you use it on a full grid.[3]

Moving items in and out

You don't have to shift-click items into the grid one at a time. Hold the W key and click an item to transfer it into the grid, or hold Shift and W while clicking to transfer every item of that type.[1]

On the way out, this pack leaves right-click stack crafting turned on, so right-clicking the result slot of a crafting table crafts a full stack in one go. That's client.rightClickCraftsStack, set to true here.[1][3][4]

Compress and decompress

There's a keybind that instantly compresses a stack of items into its 3x3 or 2x2 recipe, and decompresses blocks back into their ingot or item form. It's the fastest way to turn a pile of ingots into blocks without opening a recipe at all.[1]

In this pack, common.compressRequiresCraftingGrid is left at true, which means the compress key only works while you have a crafting GUI open. Setting it to false lets the feature work outside crafting GUIs in your player inventory, but that only works if the mod is installed on the server.[3][4]

The pack also ships a small denylist of things the compress key will refuse to craft. common.compressDenylist is set to Sandstone and Iron Trapdoor, so you won't accidentally burn a stack of sand or iron ingots into those when you mash the key.[3][4]

Buttons, hotkeys, or neither

client.mode controls how you interact with the mod. This pack leaves it on DEFAULT, which enables both the on-screen buttons and the hotkeys. You can set it to BUTTONS for buttons only, HOTKEYS for keybinds only, or DISABLED to turn the mod off completely.[3][4]

Tip: If the Crafting Tweaks buttons overlap the GUI of a particular modded crafting table, add that mod's id to client.disabledAddons to turn off support for just that mod. The pack ships this list empty, so every supported table gets the buttons by default.[3][4]

Finally, client.hideVanillaCraftingGuide is false in this pack, so vanilla's recipe book button is moved out of the way rather than hidden. Flip it to true if you'd rather have the button gone entirely and just use JEI.[3][4]

Which Crafting Tweaks config options matter?

2 parts

The pack sets Crafting Tweaks through one config file. Here's what each option in it does and the value the pack uses.[4]

Client options

  • client.mode is set to "DEFAULT", which turns on both the buttons and the hotkeys. The other allowed values are BUTTONS (buttons only), HOTKEYS (hotkeys only) and DISABLED (switches the mod's features off completely).[4]
  • client.rightClickCraftsStack is true, so right-clicking the result slot of a crafting table crafts a full stack.[1][4]
  • client.hideVanillaCraftingGuide is false. Setting it to true hides Vanilla's crafting book button instead of moving it, which is handy if you rely on JEI.[4]
  • client.disabledAddons is an empty list. Add the mod id of any mod you want Crafting Tweaks support turned off for.[4]

Compress options

The compress key packs items into their block form, and two options control it. common.compressDenylist lists items that will not be crafted by the compress key. The pack's list has two entries: Sandstone and Iron Trapdoor.[1][4]

common.compressRequiresCraftingGrid is true, so compressing and decompressing only works inside crafting screens. If you set it to false, the feature also works from the player inventory, but only if the mod is installed on the server.[4]
