What is Cooking for Blockheads?

2 parts

Cooking for Blockheads is the kitchen mod in this pack. It ships as version 21.1.1 for NeoForge 1.21.1, and it has been in the pack since version 0.32 or earlier.[1]

The pack has a food and farming quest chapter for it. It starts with a few standalone quests for the Ice Unit and the Heating Unit, and a separate chain for the books and the Cooking Table.[2]

The quest chain

  1. Start with Cooking for Blockheads I in quest a quest in "?".[2]
  2. Next comes Cooking for Blockheads II in quest a quest in "?", which unlocks after the first book quest.[2]
  3. After that comes the Cooking Table in quest a quest in "?".[2]
  4. The Cooking Table quest opens four more quests: the Sink (a quest in "?"), the Kitchen Counter (a quest in "?"), the Cow in a Jar (a quest in "?") and the Kitchen Cabinet (a quest in "?").[2]

The Ice Unit (a quest in "?") and Heating Unit (a quest in "?") quests have no prerequisites in that chapter, so you can complete them whenever you like.[2]

The Sink outside the food chapter

The Sink also turns up as a quest task in other chapters. It appears in the Mekanism chapter (a quest in "?"), the Mekanism reactors chapter (a quest in "?") and the tips and tricks chapter (a quest in "?"). The first two are locked behind earlier quests in their chapters, while the tips and tricks one has no prerequisite.[3][4][5]

Unverified The sources I was given don't describe how the mod's blocks and books work, so I can't explain them here. They also don't show the mod on the ATM Star path, and they don't say why the Sink is used in the Mekanism quests.

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

Cooking for Blockheads turns your kitchen into one connected crafting station. In this pack the quest book walks you through it in a clear order, and it's the order I'd follow too. Each step below builds on the one before it.[6]

The recipe book

Start with Cooking for Blockheads I. It's the first quest in the food and farming chapter (a quest in "?"), and its tooltip says it lets you "See food you can make right now." In this pack it's made by smelting, not by crafting.[6][7][8]

Upgrade it

The next quest is Cooking for Blockheads II (a quest in "?"). It's an upgrade of the first book, and its tooltip reads: "Craft food with what you have available."[6][7][8]

The cooking table

The Cooking Table (a quest in "?") is the key block. Its tooltip reads: "Enables crafting abilities." Its recipe uses the upgraded book, and every other kitchen quest in the chapter comes after this one.[6][7][8]

How does Cooking for Blockheads work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

Cooking for Blockheads works around a set of kitchen blocks, and each one has a tooltip that says what it does. This section sticks to what those tooltips and the pack's recipes show.[7][8]

The recipe books

The tooltip for Cooking for Blockheads I says it lets you see food you can make right now. The tooltip for Cooking for Blockheads II says it lets you craft food with what you have available.[7][8]

In this pack, the second book is an upgrade of the first. Its recipe uses the first book as a base.[7]

Crafting and cooking through the book

The tooltips explain the controls. Click again to craft, and Shift-Click to craft a stack or to cook a stack. Right-Click locks or unlocks an item, and scrolling selects an item. There is also a sort option for the hunger a food restores.[8]

When a recipe can't be made, the tooltips list the possible reasons: missing ingredients, missing tools or a missing oven.[8]

Kitchen blocks and what they provide

Each kitchen block has a tooltip describing its role. The Cooking Table tooltip says it enables crafting abilities, and the oven tooltip says it enables smelting abilities. The Cutting Board tooltip says it provides a cutting board for recipes.[7][8]

  • The tooltips for Kitchen Counter and the fridge say they store ingredients for recipes. The cabinet tooltip says it can be placed on the wall above kitchen blocks.[7][8]
  • The sink tooltip says it provides water to recipes.[8]
  • The milk jar tooltip says it provides milk to recipes. The cow jar tooltip says it slowly produces milk for recipes.[8]
  • The ice unit tooltip says it provides snow and ice to recipes.[8]
  • The tool rack tooltip says it provides tools to recipes. The spice rack stores spices and ingredients, and the fruit basket stores fruits.[8]
  • The preservation chamber tooltip says it prevents the last item of a slot from being used up.[8]
  • The toaster tooltip says it magically turns bread into toast.[8]

The tooltips also describe how the oven can be heated. The heating unit tooltip says it allows an oven to be heated using energy, and a tooltip shows stored energy as a current/maximum pair. The sources don't give a capacity or an energy-per-cook figure, so there are no numbers to share there.[8]

Connecting the kitchen

The tooltip for Kitchen Connector says it connects kitchen blocks over corners. The tooltip for the kitchen floor, Kitchen Floor, says it connects kitchen blocks over distances, so your storage doesn't have to sit right next to your cooking table.[7][8]

The other floor colors follow the same pattern with a different dye.

Other kitchen blocks can be recolored too. The pack has shapeless dye recipes for cabinets, connectors, cooking tables, counters, fridges, ovens and sinks. Black, blue and brown versions are confirmed in the sources.[7]

Automation and tuning options

The mod has options that affect automation and balance. One lets a pack disallow oven automation, so pipes and similar tools can't insert or extract. Others change oven cook time, oven fuel time, and whether the oven only accepts cooking oil, which requires Pam's Harvestcraft. A further option gives kitchen counters twice as much inventory space.[8]

For fluids, the sink tooltip says it provides water to recipes. An option can make it require piped-in water instead of providing an infinite supply. The cow jar has its own options for whether you can make one by dropping an anvil on a cow, and for how much milk it produces per tick.[8]

Unverified No config files for this mod were available for this pack, so the actual values of these options are unconfirmed. That includes whether oven automation is allowed, whether large counters are on, the oven multipliers, and whether the sink needs piped water. The sources also don't explain how pipes or other mods interact with the fridge, counters or cabinets.

How do you progress through Cooking for Blockheads?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

In this pack, Cooking for Blockheads progression is a quest chain in the Food and Farming chapter. You start with a recipe book, upgrade it, build a Cooking Table, and then unlock the kitchen blocks around it.[6]

Step 1: The books

The chain starts with a quest in "?", which asks you to get Cooking for Blockheads I. This one is made by smelting, not crafting.[6][7]

Smelting

Recipe id: cookingforblockheads:recipe_book

a quest in "?" comes next and asks for Cooking for Blockheads II, the upgraded book. Its recipe uses the first book, so you can't skip a step.[6][7]

Recipe id: cookingforblockheads:crafting_book

There is also a smelting recipe that turns Cooking for Blockheads into the first book. Use it if you end up with that item.[7]

Step 2: The Cooking Table

a quest in "?" asks for the Cooking Table. Its recipe consumes the upgraded book, so make that book first. This quest is the hub of the chapter: every kitchen quest after it requires it.[6][7]

Colors and extras

Beyond the quest chain, you can dye cabinets, cooking tables, counters, sinks, ovens, fridges and connectors, with a dye recipe for each color. Colored kitchen floors are made from the base Kitchen Floor plus a dye. Bone meal removes the dye from cabinets, cooking tables, counters and sinks. These are cosmetic and not part of the quests listed above.[7]

The Cutting Board and the Kitchen Connector also have recipes in the pack, but no quest in the sources asks for them.[6][7]

Tip: The Sink is also a quest task in the Forbidden Arcanus, Mekanism Reactors and Tips and Tricks chapters, so a Sink built for the kitchen chain is an item those quests ask for too.[9][10][11]

How does Cooking for Blockheads work with other mods?

1 part

There's not much here, and I'd rather be upfront about it. The sources I have show no in-pack recipes that mix Cooking for Blockheads items with items from other mods. The only cross-mod links are in the quest book.[2][3][4][5]

Where the Sink shows up in other chapters

The main Cooking for Blockheads quests live in the food and farming chapter. That chapter covers the Cooking Table, Heating Unit, Ice Unit, Kitchen Counter, Kitchen Cabinet and Cow in a Jar, among others.[2]

The Sink is the one item that also gets quests outside that chapter. It has its own quest in the food and farming chapter (a quest in "?"). Three more quests ask for it in other chapters.[2][3][4][5]

  • The Mekanism chapter has a quest whose task is the Sink (a quest in "?"). It unlocks after another quest in that chapter.[3]
  • The Mekanism reactors chapter has a quest whose task is the Sink (a quest in "?"). It also unlocks after another quest in that chapter.[4]
  • The tips and tricks chapter has a quest whose task is the Sink (a quest in "?"). It has no prerequisite listed.[5]

Each of these quests only asks you to obtain the Sink. None of them requires an item from another mod in the same task.[3][4][5]

Unverified The sources don't say why the Sink is placed in the Mekanism and Mekanism reactors chapters, or what role it is meant to play there. Treat any specific use, such as a water source for those machines, as unconfirmed.

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Cooking for Blockheads?

2 parts

Cooking for Blockheads shows up in several quest chapters in this pack. The main one is food_and_farming, which walks you through the mod's core items. The others only ask for a single item each. None of these quests has a title in the pack files, so they are listed by their quest ids.[2][3][4][5]

Food and Farming chapter

Every quest here for the mod asks you to obtain one item. The main line runs through the books and then the cooking table.[2]

  1. a quest in "?" asks for Cooking for Blockheads I, the first book in the line.[2]
  2. a quest in "?" unlocks after that and asks for Cooking for Blockheads II.[2]
  3. a quest in "?" comes next and asks for Cooking Table.[2]

Once the cooking table quest is done, these quests all open up side by side, so you can take them in any order:[2]

Some other quests in this chapter list no prerequisite, so you can do them whenever you like. a quest in "?" asks for the Ice Unit, and a quest in "?" asks for the Heating Unit.[2]

Other chapters that ask for the Sink

The Sink turns up in other chapters too, each time as the only task of its quest.[3][4][5]

  • In the mekanism chapter, a quest in "?" asks for the sink and unlocks after another quest in that chapter.[3]
  • In the mekanism_reactors chapter, a quest in "?" asks for the sink and also unlocks after another quest in that chapter.[4]
  • In the tips_and_tricks chapter, a quest in "?" asks for the sink and lists no prerequisite.[5]
