What is Auroral?
1 part
Auroral is a winter expansion that turns cold biomes from barren wastes into progression hubs. The pack includes version 1.21.1-1.1.1 of Auroral. You harness the Aurora Borealis to craft Shimmersteel tools and weapons and Shimmerweave armor. You also get Nether-free potion brewing and a few friendly creatures.[1][2][3]
Everything revolves around the aurora, an event that starts on 33% of nights in cold biomes. While it is active, exposed basins slowly fill with Liquid Aura, your Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor repair themselves while equipped, and Aurora Blooms appear on snow blocks.[4]
This mod is for you if you want a self-contained, snowy progression line. It also suits you if you hate making a Nether trip just to start brewing. The Cold Brewing Stand burns snowballs instead of Blaze Powder, and Frozen Petals make Awkward Potions the way Nether Wart does.[1][5][6]
Where it fits in your progression
- Wait for an aurora in a cold biome, such as Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Peaks or Grove, and harvest Aurora Bloom plants for Frozen Petals.[3][6]
- Craft a Glacial Basin and let it collect Liquid Aura. In this pack's quests, the basin has to reach Level 3 before you can infuse items in it ("Auroral Infusion" quest).[1][6]
- Craft Unrefined Shimmersteel from Copper, Iron and Coal, then infuse it in a full basin to get a Shimmersteel Ingot ("Shimmersteel" quest).[6]
- Infuse Frozen Petals into Aurora Shard items. You need them for the Smithing Template, the Hearthwood Log and the Aurora Lantern, and for taming Auroral mobs ("Aurora Shards" quest).[6]
- Upgrade iron gear into Shimmersteel tools and weapons. Infusing Woven Leather in the basin gives you Shimmerweave Fabric for Shimmerweave armor.[1][3][6]
Along the way you can also tame flying Auroral Nautili with Aurora Shards, and make a tiny Auroral Snowlette pet by handing a shard to a Snow Golem.[6][7]
Unverified The sources I was given do not show this mod on the ATM Star quest path, so I can't say where it fits there.
How do you get started with Auroral?
6 parts
Auroral is all about the aurora, so your first job is simply to be in a cold biome at night. Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Grove and Snowy Taiga all count. Each night in a cold biome has a 33% chance of an aurora, and that's when the mod's magic switches on.[3][4]
Craft a Glacial Basin
The Glacial Basin is your main workstation, so make it before the first aurora. This recipe was changed by the pack, so go by the recipe below and not by what you remember from the mod's default.[5][8]
Put it outside under open sky in a cold biome. During an aurora it collects Liquid Aura. The quest "Auroral Infusion" quest says the basin goes up to Level 3, and you can only infuse items once it reaches Level 3. More basins means more aura, so building a few is worth it.[6][9]
Harvest Aurora Blooms for Frozen Petals
While the aurora is up, Aurora Bloom flowers grow on snow and ice. Wait until one is fully grown before you break it, because an immature bloom drops nothing. A mature one gives you Frozen Petals plus a living bloom you can replant. Blooms wilt at sunrise, so use the night.[6][10]
Infuse petals into Aurora Shards
Right-click the basin with Frozen Petals during an aurora to get an Aurora Shard. Shards are an important crafting ingredient in this pack. You need them for the smithing template, Hearthwood Log and Aurora Lantern, and they are also used to tame Auroral mobs.[1][6][9]
Make your first Shimmersteel
Shimmersteel starts as Unrefined Shimmersteel. The pack changed this recipe too.[6][8]
Crafting Shapeless
- any copper ingot
- any iron ingot
Coal
Recipe id: auroral:unrefined_shimmersteel
Toss it into a full Glacial Basin during an aurora and you get a Shimmersteel Ingot.[1][6]
Smithing template and gear
Next, make the Smithing Template. It is used for both Shimmersteel gear and Shimmerweave armor.[6][8]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: auroral:shimmersteel_upgrade_smithing_template
With the template and your ingots you can upgrade iron tools and weapons at a Smithing Table. Here's the pickaxe as an example:[1][8]
Shimmersteel gear and Shimmerweave armor repair themselves while equipped during an aurora.[4][6]
Good next steps
- Craft a Hearthwood Log to make auroras more likely. Each lit log within 32 blocks adds 15% chance at nightfall, up to three logs for 45%. Light it with Flint and Steel.[6][11]
- Craft a Cold Brewing Stand for potions without the Nether. It runs on snowballs, and Frozen Petals brew Awkward Potions like Nether Wart.[5][6][8]

How does Auroral work?
6 parts
Auroral isn't a machine-and-pipes mod. The guide describes no power, fluid pipes or multiblocks. Everything runs on one cycle: wait for an aurora, collect Liquid Aura in a Glacial Basin, then right-click materials into their magical versions. Once you understand that loop, the rest of the mod falls into place.[1][4][12]
Aurora events
Each night in a cold biome has a 33% chance to start an aurora. The mod lists Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Grove and Snowy Taiga as cold biomes. While the aurora is active, Liquid Aura builds up in anything exposed to the sky, Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor repair themselves while equipped, Auroral Nautiluses drift in near players, and Aurora Blooms appear on snow.[3][4]
You can tilt the odds with a lit Hearthwood Log. Light it with Flint and Steel. If it's within 32 blocks of you in a cold biome, it adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall. Up to three logs stack for +45%, which gives about 78% a night on default settings. A fourth log does nothing extra.[4][11]
A lit log burns for 7 in-game days (168,000 ticks) of chunk-loaded time. The timer only ticks while the chunk is active. The same log gives Frostbite Immunity to players within 16 blocks and sets Phantoms on fire within 16 blocks. The guide says the burn time is configurable in the server config, but there are no config files for this mod in the pack, so I can't confirm the pack's value.[11]
The Glacial Basin
The Glacial Basin is your main workstation. Place it under open sky and wait for an aurora. It fills with Liquid Aura up to 3 levels, and you right-click it with the input item to transform it. It needs a clear view of the sky. Auroras last the whole night, and the guide suggests placing several basins to collect more aura per event.[12]
The pack changes the basin's recipe, so use this one and not the mod default.[8]
The basin has four transformations. A Shimmersteel Ingot infusion needs the basin completely full and uses all 3 levels at once. The other three each cost 1 level.[12][13]
- Unrefined Shimmersteel becomes a Shimmersteel Ingot. This uses all 3 levels.[1][12][13]
- Woven Leather becomes Shimmerweave Fabric, at 1 level.[1][12]
- Frozen Petals become an Aurora Shard, at 1 level.[1][12]
- Ice becomes Shimmering Ice, at 1 level.[1][12]
The basin is driven by right-clicking, and the sources don't mention automation.[9][12]
Unverified Whether hoppers, pipes or other automation can feed or empty the Glacial Basin isn't covered by the sources, so treat it as untested. The First Steps page also says you can right-click the basin with a plain Iron Ingot to get Shimmersteel. The in-pack recipes and the other guide pages use Unrefined Shimmersteel instead, so I'd follow that route.
Making Shimmersteel and Shimmerweave
Unrefined Shimmersteel is a crafting recipe, and the pack changes it. Craft it first, then infuse it in a full basin.[8][13]
Crafting Shapeless
- any copper ingot
- any iron ingot
Coal
Recipe id: auroral:unrefined_shimmersteel
For Shimmerweave, craft Woven Leather and infuse it in the basin to get Shimmerweave Fabric.[1][8]
Both materials then go into a Smithing Table with the Shimmersteel upgrade template. The template takes iron armor, weapons or tools in its base slot, and a Shimmersteel Ingot or Shimmerweave Fabric in its additions slot. Ingots upgrade iron tools and the bow. Fabric upgrades iron armor into goggles, tunic, leggings or skates.[8][9]

Shimmering Ice and Shimmer Soil
Shimmering Ice never melts and glows at light level 8. It hydrates vanilla farmland and Shimmer Soil within 4 blocks, like water. Glow-Leeks can only be planted on it.[14]
Shimmer Soil is made by tilling snow with a Shimmersteel Hoe. Crops on it grow 3x faster at night and 5x faster during an aurora. Together with Shimmering Ice, you get a farm that needs no water.[9][14]
Cold Brewing Stand
The Cold Brewing Stand behaves like the vanilla brewing stand, except snowballs are the fuel instead of Blaze Powder. It holds up to 20 snowballs. Frozen Petals work like Nether Wart: put Water Bottles in the bottom slots and the petals in the ingredient slot to get Awkward Potions. After that, the normal potion tree is open to you.[15]

Creature rules
- Wild Auroral Nautili only spawn during auroras and fade away 30 seconds after one ends. Feeding one an Aurora Shard has a 33% chance to tame it, and a tamed one no longer despawns.[7]
- Shift + right-click toggles a tamed Nautilus between Follow and Stay. You can ride it without a saddle. Hold Space to charge and release for up to a 3x speed boost.[7]
- Eating a Roasted Snowball stops wild Nautili spawning near you. Eating a Sugared Roasted Snowball fixes that, and so does a S'nore.[7][16][17][18]
How do you progress through Auroral?
7 parts
As the pack's Auroral quest chapter lays it out, progression is about waiting for an aurora, harvesting what it grows, then infusing it. The tiers below follow that order.[6]
Tier 1: Auroras, Blooms and Frozen Petals
The in-game guide says auroras have a 33% chance to begin each night in cold biomes, so your first job is to get yourself to the snow. According to the quest text, Aurora Bloom plants grow randomly during auroras, on or in snow, layered snow, powdered snow and ice.[4][6]
The quest text says that breaking a fully grown bloom gives you Frozen Petals and another bloom. Quest "Aurora Blooms" quest covers the blooms, and "Frozen Petals" quest follows it.[6]
Tier 2: The Glacial Basin
The Glacial Basin collects Liquid Aurora. It goes up to Level 3, and you can only infuse items with it at Level 3. More basins means more Aurora collected. This is quest "Auroral Infusion" quest, and Shimmerweave Fabric, Aurora Shards, Shimmersteel and Shimmering Ice all come after it in the chapter. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's default.[6][8]

Tier 3: Aurora Shards
The quest text says infusing Frozen Petals gives you Aurora Shard. It lists shards as an ingredient for Shimmer Smithing Templates, Hearthwood Logs and Aurora Lanterns, and as the item used to tame mobs from the Auroral. See quest "Aurora Shards" quest.[6]

Per quest 3AD8A3E543ADABD1, the template is used for Shimmersteel gear and Shimmerweave armor.
The Hearthwood Log is worth making early. The in-game guide says a lit log within 32 blocks of a player in a cold biome adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall, and up to three logs stack for +45%, which pushes the nightly chance to about 78% on default settings. Quest "Hearthwood Logs" quest covers it.[4][6][11]

Tier 4: Shimmersteel
The quest text says you craft Unrefined Shimmersteel first, then toss it into a full Glacial Basin to get a Shimmersteel Ingot. The pack changed the unrefined recipe, so go by the in-pack version below. This is quest "Shimmersteel" quest.[6][8]

This is the pack's version of the recipe.
With ingots and a template in hand, the Shimmersteel tools quest ("Shimmersteel Tools" quest) and weapons quest ("Shimmersteel Weapons" quest) come next. In the recipes, each piece is a smithing upgrade of the matching vanilla iron tool, or of a vanilla bow for the Shimmersteel Bow. The quest text describes these abilities:[6][8]
- Shimmersteel Shovel: comes with Silk Touch, per the tools quest.[6]
- Shimmersteel Hoe: also has Silk Touch, and can be used on snow to make Shimmer Soil.[6]
- Shimmersteel Axe: the quest says it can be used on Copper Blocks to oxidize them, the opposite of stripping.[6]
- Shimmersteel Pickaxe: the quest says it is the same tier as an iron pickaxe, with Fortune 3 for gems only.[6]
- Shimmersteel Sword: the quest says it gives mobs Frostbite when you hit them below a certain amount of health.[6]
- Shimmersteel Bow: the quest says it uses Snowballs instead of arrows. A hit deals damage, and mobs hit or near the snowball get Blindness and Glowing.[6]
The other Shimmersteel tools and weapons use the same smithing pattern with their vanilla counterparts.
The quest and the in-game guide both say Shimmersteel gear repairs itself while equipped during an aurora.[4][6]
Tier 4 side branch: Shimmerweave armor
Per the quest text, you craft Woven Leather, then infuse it in a Glacial Basin to get Shimmerweave Fabric (quest "Shimmerweave Fabric" quest). The quest says the fabric is only used for the four armor pieces in quest "Shimmerweave Armor" quest. It states the full set has 20 Armor Points and 8 Armor Toughness, the same as Netherite, and the guide says the armor repairs itself during an aurora.[4][6]
Goggles, leggings and skates use the same smithing pattern with their vanilla iron counterparts.
The armor quest describes the effects like this. The Shimmerweave Goggles give Glowing to hostile mobs. The Shimmerweave Tunic puts out fire that is burning you. The Shimmerweave Leggings give a speed boost on snow, soul sand and soul soil. The Shimmerweave Skates speed you up on ice, freeze water and turn lava into obsidian as you walk.[6]
Utility unlocks
The Aurora Lantern needs both a shard and a Shimmersteel Ingot, so its quest ("Aurora Lanterns" quest) comes after Aurora Shards and Shimmersteel. The in-game guide says that while it is held in either hand you are immune to the Darkness effect. The pack changed its recipe.[6][8][19]

Per its quest, the Cold Brewing Stand saves you a trip to the Nether. It uses the same potion recipes, but you fuel it with Snowballs instead of Blaze Powder. Its quest ("Cold Brewing Stand" quest) follows Shimmersteel and Frozen Petals.[6][8]

Optional branches
- The quest text says infused ice gives Shimmering Ice, which never melts, gives off light and hydrates crops. It adds that Glow-Leek only grows on it, and eating one gives Night Vision and Glowing.[6]
- Hand an Aurora Shard to a Snow Golem to make an Auroral Snowlette, a tiny purple companion that follows you and glows.[6][7]
- Auroral Nautili appear during auroras and fade 30 seconds after the aurora ends. Each shard has a 33% chance to tame one. Once tamed you can ride it, and holding Space gives a boost.[6][7]
- Eating a Roasted Snowball stops wild Nautili spawning near you, and eating a Sugared Roasted Snowball undoes that.[6][7]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Auroral?
5 parts
The quests for this mod sit in one chapter, also called Auroral. The quest text takes you from your first Aurora Bloom to Shimmersteel gear, Shimmerweave armor and a few new mobs. The quests unlock as a tree, so here is the order you will naturally follow.[6]
Getting started
- "Aurora Blooms" quest is one of the two chapter openers. It asks for an Aurora Bloom. The quest text says blooms grow randomly during Auroras on or in snow, layered snow, powdered snow and ice, and that breaking a fully grown one gives Frozen Petals and another bloom. It also says they all disappear once it is daytime and the Aurora is over, unless you harvest them with Silk Touch, which gives a decorative bloom that lasts forever but drops no petals.[6]
- "Frozen Petals" quest unlocks after the blooms and asks for Frozen Petals. The quest text says they can be used to craft food, Glow Leek Seeds and Cold Brewing Stands, and to brew Awkward Potions.[6]
- "Auroral Infusion" quest is the other opener. It asks for a Glacial Basin. The quest text says it collects Liquid Aurora and goes up to Level 3, and that only at Level 3 can you use items on it to infuse them. More basins means more Aurora collected.[6]
After the Glacial Basin
Once "Auroral Infusion" quest is done, three quests open up. "Shimmersteel" quest asks for Unrefined Shimmersteel and a Shimmersteel Ingot. The quest text says you get the ingot by tossing the unrefined version into a full basin. "Shimmering Ice" quest asks for Shimmering Ice, which the quest text describes as never melting, giving off light and hydrating crops like water. "Shimmerweave Fabric" quest asks for Shimmerweave Fabric, which the quest text says is made by infusing Woven Leather in the basin.[6]
"Aurora Shards" quest needs both the basin quest and the Frozen Petals quest. It asks for an Aurora Shard. The quest text says infusing Frozen Petals gives you shards, and that they are needed for Shimmer Smithing Templates, Hearthwood Logs, Aurora Lanterns and taming mobs from the Auroral.[6]
Branching out from Aurora Shards
- "Shimmer Smithing Templates" quest asks for the Smithing Template. The quest text says it is used to make Shimmersteel gear and Shimmerweave armor, and that this gear repairs itself if equipped during an Aurora.[6]
- "Hearthwood Logs" quest asks for a Hearthwood Log. The quest text says each one increases the chance of an Aurora spawning by 15%, stacking up to 3 of them for 45%. It also says the log scares off Phantoms and negates powdered snow damage near it.[6]
- "Auroral Snowlettes" quest is about handing an Aurora Shard to a Snow Golem. The quest text says this makes a tiny purple Auroral Snowlette that follows you and glows instead of shooting snowballs. The quest asks for a carved pumpkin and an Aurora Shard.[6]
- "Auroral Nautilus" quest covers the flying Auroral Nautilus. The quest text says it spawns rarely during Auroras and disappears 30 seconds after the Aurora stops, and that an Aurora Shard gives you a 1/3 chance to tame one. The quest asks for a snowball and a shard.[6]
Crafting and farming quests
- "Glow Leeks" quest needs Shimmering Ice and Frozen Petals. It asks for Glow Leek Seeds and a Glow-Leek. The quest text says the seeds are placed on Shimmering Ice to grow, and that eating the leeks gives Night Vision.[6]
- "Cold Brewing Stand" quest needs Shimmersteel and Frozen Petals. It asks for a Cold Brewing Stand. The quest text says it uses snowballs as fuel instead of Blaze Powder.[6]
- "Aurora Lanterns" quest needs Aurora Shards and Shimmersteel. It asks for an Aurora Lantern. The quest text says that holding it in either hand stops you getting the Darkness effect.[6]
Gear
The last three quests all need the smithing template quest. "Shimmerweave Armor" quest also needs the fabric quest and accepts any one of Shimmerweave Goggles, Shimmerweave Tunic, Shimmerweave Leggings or Shimmerweave Skates. The quest text says the full set has 20 Armor Points and 8 Armor Toughness, the same as Netherite.[6]
"Shimmersteel Tools" quest also needs the Shimmersteel quest and accepts any one of Shimmersteel Pickaxe, Shimmersteel Axe, Shimmersteel Shovel or Shimmersteel Hoe. "Shimmersteel Weapons" quest has the same requirements and accepts the Shimmersteel Sword or the Shimmersteel Bow. The quest text says the bow uses snowballs instead of arrows.[6]
What changed in Auroral between versions?
Auroral came into the pack in All the Mods 10 8.0, when the pack changelog listed it as added at version 1.21.1-1.1.1.[20]
In All the Mods 10 8.1 (the version this guide covers) it's still at 1.21.1-1.1.1, so nothing changed between 8.0 and 8.1. The pack ships it as auroral-1.21.1-1.1.1.jar.[2][20]
Unverified The mod's own changelogs for the shipped jar aren't available, so what 1.1.1 changed compared to earlier Auroral versions is unverified.
