What is Auroral?

2 parts

Auroral is a winter expansion mod that turns cold biomes from barren wastes into hubs of progression. Everything revolves around the Aurora Borealis. You use its power to craft Shimmersteel tools, Shimmerweave armor, magical flora and potions, all without needing to visit the Nether.[1][2][3]

This pack includes Auroral version 1.21.1-1.1.1.[4]

How the mod works

The heart of the mod is the aurora event. Each night in a cold biome there's a 33% chance an aurora begins, filling the sky with green and pink ribbons of light. While it's active, Glacial Basins open to the sky slowly fill with Liquid Aura, Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor repair themselves while equipped, Aurora Blooms appear on snow blocks, and Auroral Nautiluses drift in near players.[5]

The core loop is simple. You gather Frozen Petals from Aurora Blooms or from Auroral Nautiluses, build a Glacial Basin and collect Liquid Aura during auroras. You then use that aura to infuse iron into Shimmersteel, which you turn into enhanced tools, weapons and armor.[2][6]

Shimmersteel and Shimmerweave gear is made by upgrading iron tools and armor at a Smithing Table. That makes Auroral a natural next step once you've got an iron kit.[1]

Who it's for

If you like building in the snow, this mod is for you. Its features are designed for cold biomes like Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Grove and Snowy Taiga.[2]

It's also handy if you want potions early. The Cold Brewing Stand uses snowballs as fuel instead of Blaze Powder. Frozen Petals brew an Awkward Potion from a Water Bottle, exactly like Nether Wart does, so the whole brewing tree opens up without a trip to the Nether.[1][6]

There's a cozy side too. You can create a tiny Snowlette companion by using an Aurora Shard on a Snow Golem. Wild Nautili can be tamed with Aurora Shards and ridden without a saddle. The mod also adds winter treats like Hot Cocoa.[1][7][8]

Tip: Want more auroras? A lit Hearthwood Log within 32 blocks of you in a cold biome adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall. Up to three logs stack for +45%, which the in-game guide says pushes the nightly chance to about 78% on default settings.[5]

Unverified The available sources don't confirm whether this pack changes the mod's aurora chance settings, so the percentages above are the values from the mod's own guide.

How do you get started with Auroral?

6 parts

Auroral runs on one loop: wait for an aurora in a cold biome, collect Liquid Aura in a basin, and use it to turn ordinary materials into magical ones. Here's the order to tackle things in so your first aurora night isn't wasted.[2][6]

Grab the guidebook first

The Auroral Guidebook is cheap to craft and has the mod's full documentation in-game, so it's a great first item to have on hand.[1][9]

Head somewhere cold

Everything in this mod happens in cold biomes like Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Grove and Snowy Taiga. Each night in a cold biome has a 33% chance to start an aurora, and you'll know it when the sky fills with green and pink ribbons of light.[2][5]

Your first items, in order

  1. Craft a Glacial Basin. This is your main workstation, and this pack changes its recipe, so check the recipe shown below rather than an older video or wiki.[6][9]
  2. Place the basin under open sky in a cold biome. During an aurora it slowly fills with Liquid Aura, which powers every infusion.[1][5]
  3. While the aurora is up, harvest Aurora Blooms that pop up on snow and ice for Frozen Petals. Only fully grown stage 3 blooms drop petals, so breaking young ones gets you nothing.[10]
  4. Right-click the basin with Frozen Petals to infuse them into an Aurora Shard, which shows up in a lot of the mod's recipes.[1][9]
  5. Craft Unrefined Shimmersteel. This pack changes this recipe too, so use the one shown below.[9]
  6. Right-click the basin with Unrefined Shimmersteel during an aurora to refine it into a Shimmersteel Ingot.[1][11]

Watch out: Aurora Blooms left in the ground wilt away at sunrise, so harvest everything that's mature before morning.[10]

Unverified The in-game guide also describes right-clicking the basin with a plain Iron Ingot to get Shimmersteel. Other sources describe the Unrefined Shimmersteel route instead, so it's not confirmed which one works in this pack.

Upgrade your iron gear

Once you have ingots, make a Shimmersteel upgrade Smithing Template and use it at a Smithing Table to turn your iron tools into Shimmersteel ones. The pickaxe is a strong first pick, since it gets Fortune III on gem ores.[1][9][11]

Make auroras happen more often

A Hearthwood Log lit with Flint and Steel within 32 blocks of you in a cold biome adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall. Up to three logs stack for +45%, which the guide says brings the nightly chance to about 78% on default settings. A fourth log adds nothing.[5][12]

Lit logs also make you immune to Frostbite within a 16-block radius and set Phantoms on fire, so a few around your base are worth it even without the aurora boost.[12]

Tip: Don't snack on a Roasted Snowball: it offends the Auroral Nautili and stops wild ones spawning near you. If you already ate one, eat a Sugared Roasted Snowball to apologize.[8][11]

How does Auroral work?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Auroral isn't a machine-and-pipes mod. The guide describes no power, fluid pipes or multiblocks. Everything runs on one cycle: wait for an aurora, collect Liquid Aura in a Glacial Basin, then right-click materials into their magical versions. Once you understand that loop, the rest of the mod falls into place.[1][5][13]

Aurora events

Each night in a cold biome has a 33% chance to start an aurora. The mod lists Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Frozen Ocean, Frozen Peaks, Grove and Snowy Taiga as cold biomes. While the aurora is active, Liquid Aura builds up in anything exposed to the sky, Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor repair themselves while equipped, Auroral Nautiluses drift in near players, and Aurora Blooms appear on snow.[2][5]

You can tilt the odds with a lit Hearthwood Log. Light it with Flint and Steel. If it's within 32 blocks of you in a cold biome, it adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall. Up to three logs stack for +45%, which gives about 78% a night on default settings. A fourth log does nothing extra.[5][12]

A lit log burns for 7 in-game days (168,000 ticks) of chunk-loaded time. The timer only ticks while the chunk is active. The same log gives Frostbite Immunity to players within 16 blocks and sets Phantoms on fire within 16 blocks. The guide says the burn time is configurable in the server config, but there are no config files for this mod in the pack, so I can't confirm the pack's value.[12]

The Glacial Basin

The Glacial Basin is your main workstation. Place it under open sky and wait for an aurora. It fills with Liquid Aura up to 3 levels, and you right-click it with the input item to transform it. It needs a clear view of the sky. Auroras last the whole night, and the guide suggests placing several basins to collect more aura per event.[13]

The pack changes the basin's recipe, so use this one and not the mod default.[14]

The basin has four transformations. A Shimmersteel Ingot infusion needs the basin completely full and uses all 3 levels at once. The other three each cost 1 level.[13][15]

The basin is driven by right-clicking, and the sources don't mention automation.[11][13]

Unverified Whether hoppers, pipes or other automation can feed or empty the Glacial Basin isn't covered by the sources, so treat it as untested. The First Steps page also says you can right-click the basin with a plain Iron Ingot to get Shimmersteel. The in-pack recipes and the other guide pages use Unrefined Shimmersteel instead, so I'd follow that route.

Making Shimmersteel and Shimmerweave

Unrefined Shimmersteel is a crafting recipe, and the pack changes it. Craft it first, then infuse it in a full basin.[14][15]

Both materials then go into a Smithing Table with the Shimmersteel upgrade template. The template takes iron armor, weapons or tools in its base slot, and a Shimmersteel Ingot or Shimmerweave Fabric in its additions slot. Ingots upgrade iron tools and the bow. Fabric upgrades iron armor into goggles, tunic, leggings or skates.[11][14]

Shimmering Ice and Shimmer Soil

Shimmering Ice never melts and glows at light level 8. It hydrates vanilla farmland and Shimmer Soil within 4 blocks, like water. Glow-Leeks can only be planted on it.[16]

Shimmer Soil is made by tilling snow with a Shimmersteel Hoe. Crops on it grow 3x faster at night and 5x faster during an aurora. Together with Shimmering Ice, you get a farm that needs no water.[11][16]

Cold Brewing Stand

The Cold Brewing Stand behaves like the vanilla brewing stand, except snowballs are the fuel instead of Blaze Powder. It holds up to 20 snowballs. Frozen Petals work like Nether Wart: put Water Bottles in the bottom slots and the petals in the ingredient slot to get Awkward Potions. After that, the normal potion tree is open to you.[17]

Creature rules

  • Wild Auroral Nautili only spawn during auroras and fade away 30 seconds after one ends. Feeding one an Aurora Shard has a 33% chance to tame it, and a tamed one no longer despawns.[8]
  • Shift + right-click toggles a tamed Nautilus between Follow and Stay. You can ride it without a saddle. Hold Space to charge and release for up to a 3x speed boost.[8]
  • Eating a Roasted Snowball stops wild Nautili spawning near you. Eating a Sugared Roasted Snowball fixes that, and so does a S'nore.[8][18][19][20]
Watch out: Craft a Sugared Roasted Snowball before you ever eat a plain Roasted Snowball, or you won't see wild Nautili until you apologize.[18][20]

How do you progress through Auroral?

6 parts

Auroral's progression runs on its crafting recipes. You start with a few basic items, gather materials that only show up during auroras, turn them into Shimmersteel, and then upgrade your gear. Here's each tier in order, with the in-pack recipe for each step.[9]

Tier 0: Getting started

Craft The Auroral Guidebook first. It's cheap, and it's the in-game reference for everything below.[9]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: auroral:auroral_guide

Next, head to a cold biome. Auroras have a 33% chance to begin each night in cold biomes. While one is active, the mod's magical effects switch on and most of your progression materials appear, so your first job is catching auroras.[5]

Tier 1: Aurora materials

During an aurora, Aurora Blooms spawn on cold-biome surfaces and grow through four stages. Harvest fully grown ones for Frozen Petals, which the guide calls the gateway to most of the mod's content. Harvest them before sunrise, because any blooms left when the aurora ends wilt away.[5][10][21]

Your other key material is Aurora Shard. Auroral Nautiluses only appear during auroras, and when a player kills one it can drop 1-2 Aurora Shards. You can also feed a wild Nautilus an Aurora Shard for a 33% chance to tame it. A tamed Nautilus doesn't despawn when the aurora ends, and you can ride it.[8]

Petals give you some early crafts: Glow Leek Seeds for farming, Frosted Cookies and the decorative Aurora Bloom.[9]

Speeding things up with Hearthwood

If you want more auroras, get a Hearthwood Log. You can find them naturally in cold biomes, Snowy Taiga villages, frozen structures and sometimes igloo basements, and this pack also lets you craft them with an Aurora Shard. Light one with Flint and Steel.[9][12]

Each lit log within 32 blocks of you in a cold biome adds +15% aurora chance at nightfall. Up to three logs stack for +45%, which pushes the nightly chance to about 78% on default settings. Lit logs also give Frostbite immunity within a 16-block radius and ward off Phantoms.[5][12]

Tip: Put three lit logs near where you sleep. A fourth log adds nothing to the aurora bonus.[12]

Tier 2: Shimmersteel

Shimmersteel is the mod's metal tier, and this pack has changed two of its key recipes: Unrefined Shimmersteel and Glacial Basin. Check the recipes below rather than relying on older guides.[9]

During an aurora, blocks exposed to the sky slowly fill with Liquid Aura, the magical substance needed for Shimmersteel infusion.[5]

Unverified Which block collects Liquid Aura and exactly how Unrefined Shimmersteel is infused into a Shimmersteel Ingot could not be confirmed. The Glacial Basin is probably involved, but this is unverified.

You'll also need the Smithing Template, which is crafted with an Aurora Shard. Every Shimmersteel and Shimmerweave upgrade uses it.[9]

Tier 3: Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor

Both gear lines are smithing-table upgrades of your iron-tier gear. The tools and bow use a Shimmersteel Ingot, and the armor uses Shimmerweave Fabric.[9]

Shimmersteel tools and Shimmerweave armor repair themselves while equipped during an aurora, so those Hearthwood logs keep paying off.[5]

Unverified How Shimmerweave Fabric is made could not be confirmed. The craftable Woven Leather may be part of it, but this is unverified.

Tier 4: Shimmersteel utilities

Once you're making Shimmersteel Ingots, you can craft the Cold Brewing Stand and the Aurora Lantern. This pack has changed the Aurora Lantern's recipe. The lantern has light level 15, and holding it in either hand makes you immune to Darkness, which is great for Deep Dark trips.[9][22]

How does Auroral work with other mods?

1 part

Unverified No recipes or quests in this pack connect Auroral with another mod, so there are no confirmed cross-mod integrations to cover here. If you find a way Auroral items work with another mod's machines or storage, treat it as untested until it shows up in the pack's recipes or quests.

Auroral's connections are mostly with vanilla Minecraft. You make Shimmersteel gear by upgrading your iron tools at a vanilla Smithing Table with Shimmersteel Ingots, and Shimmerweave armor by upgrading iron armor with Shimmerweave Fabric.[1]

Brewing is the big one. The Cold Brewing Stand runs on snowballs instead of Blaze Powder, and Frozen Petals do the job of Nether Wart for Awkward Potions. That lets you build a full potion setup without ever going to the Nether.[1]

Vanilla mobs and dangers

  • Right-click a vanilla Snow Golem with the right item to turn it into an Auroral Snowlette, a tiny pet about 1/4 the size of a normal Snow Golem that heals when you throw snowballs at it.[8]
  • While you hold an Aurora Lantern in your main hand or off-hand, you are immune to the Darkness effect. That makes it really handy in the Deep Dark or when you fight the Warden.[22]
  • A lit Hearthwood Log repels Phantoms and improves villager trades, on top of its aurora and Frostbite effects.[5]

What changed in Auroral between versions?

Auroral joined All the Mods 10 in version 8.0, and the changelog lists it as a new addition at version 1.21.1-1.1.1. So if you're on 8.0, that's the version you're playing with.[23]

The pack's mod list for 8.0 confirms it ships Auroral 1.21.1-1.1.1 as the jar auroral-1.21.1-1.1.1.jar. The list says the mod was first included in 8.0 or earlier, so it can't settle whether an earlier pack release already had it.[4]

Unverified No changelogs from the mod itself were available, so there's no confirmed detail on what changed inside Auroral in this version. Changes from any earlier pack releases are also unconfirmed.
