What is Sophisticated Backpacks?
1 part
The pack ships Sophisticated Backpacks 3.24.19. The mod adds the Backpack in several material tiers, plus a big family of upgrades you build on an Upgrade Base. Upgrades cover things like pickup, magnet, restocking, smelting, crafting, tanks and a jukebox.[1][2]
Where it sits in the quest book
Everything for this mod lives in the "storage" chapter. It starts with the a quest in "?" quest, which has no prerequisite and asks for the basic backpack. From there the book splits into two branches: the backpack tiers and the upgrades.[2]
- Backpack tiers: a quest in "?" comes after the basic backpack. a quest in "?" comes after both of those. Then you go a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and finally a quest in "?".[2]
- Upgrades: a quest in "?" also comes after the basic backpack, and almost every upgrade quest hangs off it, including a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[2]
- Stack upgrades form a chain: a quest in "?", then a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[2]
The advanced upgrades each come right after their basic version. For example, a quest in "?" follows a quest in "?", and a quest in "?" follows a quest in "?". The a quest in "?" quest comes after a quest in "?".[2]
The same chapter also holds quests for other storage mods, such as Sophisticated Storage barrels and Functional Storage drawers. Those are separate branches and are not part of this mod's chain.[2]
Nothing in the quest sources marks this mod as part of the ATM Star path.[2]
How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?
3 parts
Welcome to the backpack setup! The progression is simple: make a basic Backpack, upgrade the backpack itself tier by tier, and add upgrades to taste. The quest book's storage chapter follows roughly the same order, so you can use it as a checklist.[2]
Make your first backpack
The Backpack is the first quest in the storage chapter, a quest in "?", and the rest of the chapter unlocks from it. The pack changes this recipe from the mod's default, so use the one below.[2][3]

Level up the backpack
Backpack tiers are crafted by upgrading the previous one. The Copper Backpack comes first, and the pack has changed this recipe too.[2][3]

The Iron Backpack has two recipes in the pack: one starts from the plain backpack and one from the copper backpack. Its quest, a quest in "?", comes after both of the earlier backpack quests, but the recipes show you can start from either one.[2][3]

After that the chain continues with the Gold Backpack and the Diamond Backpack. Each of these takes the previous tier plus one more material, so you don't need to rush them. The quest chain then ends with the Netherite Backpack.[2][3]

Start adding upgrades
Nearly every basic upgrade quest unlocks after you obtain the Upgrade Base in a quest in "?", and that quest itself comes right after the first backpack quest. So get one early.[2]
Good first picks are the ones that save you effort right away. The Pickup Upgrade makes the backpack pick up items, and the Magnet Upgrade pulls items into the backpack from a range. The Deposit Upgrade sends items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak right click.[2][4]

Many basic upgrades also have an advanced version. In this pack the advanced recipes mostly take the basic upgrade as an ingredient, so craft the basic one first.[3]
How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?
7 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks is built around upgrades. You slot them into a backpack, and each one gets its own upgrade tab that handles a job for you: crafting, smelting, picking up items, feeding you and more. Below is how those systems behave, based on the mod's own in-game descriptions and this pack's recipe list.[3][4]
Settings and sharing
The settings screen has a toggle for letting other players open your backpack. When it's on and the backpack is worn and visible, another player can open it by right clicking your back. When it's off, they can't, even if the backpack is visible on you.[4]
Settings can be inherited from the player or overridden for one specific backpack, so you can give different backpacks different behavior.[4]
Storage upgrades
Stack upgrades multiply how many stacks fit in a slot. The tooltips list a starter tier at 1.5 times, then tiers at 2, 4, 8 and 16 times. An omega tier raises the stack size limit to 2,147,483,647. Stack downgrades go the other way and divide the stack count per slot by 8, 16 or 32.[4]
The Tank upgrade replaces part of the backpack's inventory with fluid storage. The Battery upgrade replaces part of it with energy storage.[4]
Unverified The pack has no config files for this mod that the sources here show, so backpack tiers, slot counts and how many upgrades each backpack holds could not be checked. The stack numbers above come from the mod's tooltips.
Fluids and experience
The Pump upgrade moves fluids between a Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced version also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and lets you filter which fluids are pumped. The XP Pump upgrade moves experience between a Tank upgrade and the player.[4]
Item handling and automation
The Filter Upgrade filters items piped in and/or out of the backpack. The advanced version has more filtering options.[3][4]
- Deposit Upgrade: sneak right click an inventory to deposit items from the backpack into it. The restock upgrade does the reverse, restocking the backpack from a sneak right clicked inventory.[3][4]
- Magnet and pickup upgrades: the pickup upgrade makes the backpack pick up items, and the magnet upgrade pulls items into the backpack from a range. The advanced magnet reaches a greater range.[4]
- Void upgrade: voids the items you select in its filter.[4]
- Compacting Upgrade: compacts items into their compressed variants, but only 2x2 recipes. The advanced version handles both 2x2 and 3x3 with more filtering options.[3][4]
- Feeding Upgrade: feeds you with food from the backpack. The advanced version gives more options for when food is fed.[3][4]
- Alchemy Upgrade: automatically uses potions, food with effects, or milk buckets. The advanced version adds effect filtering.[3][4]
- Refill upgrade: keeps refilling a stack of selected items in your inventory. You can scroll to change the target slot, and the advanced version allows more precise slot selection and middle click picking of blocks from the backpack.[4]
- Tool swapper upgrade: when you left click a block or entity, it swaps the item in your hand for one that is effective on it. The advanced version adds filter options.[4]
Crafting and processing in a tab
Several upgrades put a whole workstation in an upgrade tab. The Crafting Upgrade gives you a crafting table and the Anvil Upgrade an anvil, and there are smithing table, stonecutter and sawmill versions too.[3][4]
The pack also has tab versions of these Chipped workstations:[3][4]
- Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade[3][4]
- Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade[3][4]
- Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade[3][4]
- Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade[3][4]
- Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade[3][4]
- Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade[3][4]
- Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade[3][4]
Smelting works the same way. The Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade and smoking upgrade put smelting, blasting and smoking in an upgrade tab. The auto versions, Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade, also automatically pull and push items.[3][4]
In this pack you can convert between these types by crafting. Here are the conversion recipes.[3]

Protection
The Everlasting Upgrade makes the backpack indestructible, so it can't despawn or fall into the void. That's worth having on any backpack holding your good stuff.[3][4]

The mod also has two infinity upgrades that make all items in the backpack infinite. One is admin-only, and the survival version lets all players set infinite items and break or pick up the backpack. The inception upgrade lets you put backpacks inside a backpack.[4]
Pack recipe changes
Every upgrade recipe visible in this pack's recipe list is flagged as changed by the pack, so don't assume the mod's default crafting. Check the recipe shown on the site for each upgrade.[3]

How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks has two progression tracks in this pack: the backpack itself, which gets bigger and better as you upgrade it, and the upgrades you slot into it. The pack's storage quest chapter walks you through both. The recipes shown here are changed by the pack, so follow them rather than what you remember from the base mod.[2][3]
Backpack tiers
The quest line starts with the plain Backpack (a quest in "?"). From there you climb one tier at a time, and each step is a quest task.[2]
- Backpack: the starting point, quest a quest in "?".[2]
- Copper Backpack: quest a quest in "?".[2]
- Iron Backpack: quest a quest in "?", which needs both the backpack and copper backpack quests done first.[2]
- Gold Backpack: quest a quest in "?".[2]
- Diamond Backpack: quest a quest in "?".[2]
- Netherite Backpack: quest a quest in "?", the last backpack quest in the chapter.[2]

Upgrade Base and basic upgrades
Almost every upgrade quest hangs off Upgrade Base (a quest in "?"), which itself unlocks right after the first backpack. These quests all unlock directly after it: Deposit Upgrade, Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade, Filter Upgrade, Void Upgrade, Feeding Upgrade, Restock Upgrade, Refill Upgrade, Tool Swapper Upgrade, Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade, Jukebox Upgrade, Tank Upgrade, Battery Upgrade, Pump Upgrade, Compacting Upgrade, Everlasting Upgrade and Inception Upgrade.[2]
The three cooking upgrades are Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade and Smoking Upgrade. There is also a single quest, a quest in "?", that accepts any one of the seven Chipped workbench upgrades, such as Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade.[2]

Advanced upgrades
Most basic upgrades have an advanced version, and each advanced quest unlocks after its basic quest. For example, Advanced Void Upgrade (a quest in "?") follows the void upgrade quest. In the pack, these advanced recipes use the next-tier upgrade recipe type and build on the basic upgrade.[2][3]

The cooking upgrades have automatic versions as well: Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade. Each one is unlocked by the quest after its manual counterpart. At the end of the pump line, Experience Pump Upgrade (a quest in "?") follows the advanced pump quest.[2]
The advanced magnet has two pack recipes: you can reach it from the basic magnet or from the advanced pickup upgrade. Both are shown below.[3]

Stack upgrades
Stack upgrades are their own mini-ladder. The quests run from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 (a quest in "?") to Stack Upgrade Tier 2 (a quest in "?"), then Stack Upgrade Tier 3 (a quest in "?") and finally Stack Upgrade Tier 4 (a quest in "?"). Tier 1 can also be crafted from the Stack Upgrade Starter Tier.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?
2 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks connects with two other mods in this pack: Chipped and Sophisticated Storage. Both links come from crafting recipes that the pack has changed, and the Chipped link also has a quest.[2][3]
Chipped workbench upgrades
Each Chipped workbench has a matching backpack upgrade, and each of these recipes is flagged as changed by the pack. So don't assume they match the mod's defaults. The pairs are:[3]
- Alchemy Bench pairs with Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade.[3]
- Botanist Workbench pairs with Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade.[3]
- Carpenters Table pairs with Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade.[3]
- Glassblower pairs with Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade.[3]
- Loom Table pairs with Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade.[3]
- Mason Table pairs with Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade.[3]
- Tinkering Table pairs with Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade.[3]

The Glassblower upgrade as an example. The other six Chipped upgrades use the same kind of recipe, each with its own workbench.
The "storage" quest chapter has one quest, a quest in "?", that accepts any one of these seven Chipped upgrades. It comes after the quest for Upgrade Base.[2]
Swapping upgrades with Sophisticated Storage
The pack adds recipes that convert upgrades from Sophisticated Storage into Sophisticated Backpacks versions, so you don't have to craft them from scratch. These recipes are all flagged as changed by the pack. They cover filter, magnet, pickup, void and feeding upgrades (including their advanced versions), the smelting family, the Chipped upgrades, stack upgrades and more.[3]
Stack upgrades don't line up one to one by tier name. For example, the backpack's Stack Upgrade Tier 1 comes from the storage mod's Stack Upgrade Tier 2. The backpack's Stack Upgrade Starter Tier comes from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus. Check the tier before you convert.[3]

The pack also has recipes that go the other way and turn backpack upgrades into their Sophisticated Storage versions. One example is the Chipped Botanist's Workbench upgrade.[3]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
All the quests for this mod live in one place: the "storage" chapter of the quest book. That chapter has 89 quests in total and also covers vanilla containers and items from other storage mods, so this section only follows the Sophisticated Backpacks branches. Every quest here has an item task: you just need to get the item.[2]
The backpack tiers
The branch starts at a quest in "?", which asks for the Backpack and has no prerequisite listed. From there the backpack tiers follow in a line.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Copper Backpack and comes after the Backpack quest.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Iron Backpack. It comes after both the Backpack and Copper Backpack quests.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Gold Backpack.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Diamond Backpack.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Netherite Backpack, the last backpack quest.[2]
Upgrade Base and the upgrades
a quest in "?" asks for the Upgrade Base and also comes after the Backpack quest. Almost every upgrade quest then hangs off it, so this is the hub of the branch.[2]
These upgrade quests come straight after the Upgrade Base quest and have nothing after them in the chapter:[2]
- a quest in "?" for the Everlasting Upgrade[2]
- a quest in "?" for the Tank Upgrade[2]
- a quest in "?" for the Crafting Upgrade[2]
- a quest in "?" for the Battery Upgrade[2]
- a quest in "?" for the Stonecutter Upgrade[2]
- a quest in "?" for the Jukebox Upgrade[2]
- a quest in "?" for the Inception Upgrade[2]
- a quest in "?" for a Chipped upgrade. Any one of the seven Chipped upgrades counts, for example the Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade or the Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade.[2]
Upgrades with an advanced follow-up
Many basic upgrades unlock a quest for their advanced version. Each basic quest comes after the Upgrade Base quest, and the advanced quest comes after its basic partner:[2]
- a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?" (Advanced Filter Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?" (Advanced Pickup Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?" (Advanced Magnet Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?" (Advanced Feeding upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?" (Advanced Refill Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?" (Advanced Restock Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?" (Advanced Tool Swapper Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?" (Advanced Void Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?" (Advanced Deposit Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?" (Advanced Compacting Upgrade).[2]
The pump line goes one step further. a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?" for the Advanced Pump Upgrade, and that leads to a quest in "?" for the Experience Pump Upgrade.[2]
The cooking upgrades work the same way, with an automatic version after each: a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?", a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?", and a quest in "?" leads to a quest in "?". Those ask for the Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade.[2]
Stack upgrades
The stack upgrades are a straight chain. a quest in "?" comes after the Upgrade Base quest, then a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and finally a quest in "?". Each one asks for the next tier, from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 up to Stack Upgrade Tier 4.[2]
