What is Sophisticated Backpacks?
1 part
The pack includes Sophisticated Backpacks (Sophisticated Backpacks) version 3.24.21. It adds upgradable backpacks that can use filters to add extra features. The quest book says a Backpack can go in your Curios Back slot and can be dyed.[1][2]
Where it sits in the quest book
The mod's quests live in the "Basic Storage" chapter, which is introduced as the place for the basic ways to store items without needing power. The entry quest is "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest, titled "Inventories are too Small", and it asks for the Backpack.[2]
Two branches lead out of that quest: the backpack tier line and the upgrades.[2]
- Backpack tiers: "Copper Backpack" quest (the Copper Backpack) comes first, then "Iron Backpack" quest, "Gold Backpack" quest, "Diamond Backpack" quest and finally "Netherite Backpack" quest.[2]
- Upgrades: a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base, which the quest says you need to make backpack upgrades. Upgrade quests such as a quest in "Basic Storage" and a quest in "Basic Storage" come after it.[2]
Many upgrades have an advanced follow-up quest right after them. For example, "Advanced Filter Upgrade" quest follows a quest in "Basic Storage", and "Advanced Compacting Upgrade" quest follows a quest in "Basic Storage". The smelting-style upgrades have automatic versions, such as "Auto-Smelting Upgrade" quest. "Experience Pump Upgrade" quest comes after "Advanced Pump Upgrade" quest.[2]
Stack upgrades form their own chain from "Stack Upgrade Tier 1" quest through "Stack Upgrade Tier 2" quest and "Stack Upgrade Tier 3" quest to "Stack Upgrade Tier 4" quest. The quest text says they increase stack size in the backpack by 2, 4, 8 and 16 respectively.[2]
How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Welcome to Sophisticated Backpacks! The pack's quest book kicks this mod off with the "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest quest, and it's a good guide for what to make first. Here's the order I'd follow, and why.[2]
Step 1: Make a Backpack
Start with the plain Backpack. It's the base for everything else in the mod. You can wear it in your Curios Back slot, and you can dye it. Upgrades are what make it useful, and you'll add those next. The pack changes the vanilla mod recipe, so craft it from this one.[2][3]

Step 2: Grab the Upgrade Base
Next up is the Upgrade Base. The quest book says you need it to make backpack upgrades, and most of the upgrade recipes in this pack use it as an ingredient. The quest a quest in "Basic Storage" opens up the whole upgrade tree.[2][3]
Step 3: Pick a few early upgrades
You don't need everything at once. These are cheap, useful picks that the pack's recipes build straight on the Upgrade Base.[2][3]
- Crafting Upgrade puts a Crafting Table GUI inside your backpack.[2][3]
- Deposit Upgrade lets you Shift-Right Click an inventory to empty your backpack into it.[2][3][4]
- Filter Upgrade adds a filter for items being pumped in or out of the backpack.[2][3]
- Stack Upgrade Tier 1 increases the stack size in the backpack by 2. Tiers 2 to 4 follow it in the quest chain.[2]

Step 4: Climb the backpack tiers
When the basic backpack starts to feel cramped, upgrade the backpack itself. The quest chain goes Copper Backpack, then Iron Backpack, then Gold Backpack, then Diamond Backpack, then Netherite Backpack. The pack changes the recipes for these tiers too.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?
5 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks has no machines or multiblocks. Everything it does comes from upgrades that sit in tabs on the backpack. Some give you a portable workstation, like the Anvil Upgrade (an anvil in an upgrade tab) or the Crafting Upgrade (a crafting table in an upgrade tab). Others automate item, fluid or experience handling.[3][4]
Portable furnaces and the auto upgrades
The Smelting Upgrade and Blasting Upgrade put a furnace or blast furnace in an upgrade tab. The auto versions (Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade) also pull items in and push results out on their own.[3][4]
In this pack all three auto upgrades use the same server settings, and every one of them matches the mod default. Speed and fuel efficiency both sit at 1, which means vanilla furnace behaviour. You can scale either from 0.25 to 4.0 in the config. There are 8 input filter slots and 4 fuel filter slots, each shown 4 to a row.[4][5]
- server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier sets how fast items smelt, where 1.0 equals a vanilla furnace.[5]
- server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier sets how quickly fuel is used, where 1.0 equals a vanilla furnace.[5]
- The blasting and smoking versions have the same pair of options, for example server.autoBlastingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier and server.autoSmokingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier.[5]
- server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.inputFilterSlots and server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.fuelFilterSlots control how many input and fuel filter slots you get.[5]
The pack changed the recipes for these upgrades. You can make the Auto-blasting and Auto-smoking versions straight from an Auto-smelting Upgrade, and the Blasting Upgrade straight from a Smelting Upgrade.[3]

Item handling and filtering
Most item-moving upgrades come in a basic and an Advanced version, and the Advanced one has more filtering options. The Filter Upgrade filters items piped in and/or out of the backpack, which is the one to use for automation with pipes or hoppers. Pickup makes the backpack pick up items, and Magnet pulls items in from range. Void deletes whatever you select in its filter.[3][4]
- Deposit Upgrade: sneak right-click an inventory to deposit items from the backpack into it. Restock does the reverse, sneak right-clicking an inventory to restock the backpack.[3][4]
- Advanced Magnet: it has a greater range than the basic Magnet. The pack's range is 5 blocks around the backpack, the same as the mod default, and it can be set anywhere from 1 to 20 with server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange.[4][5]
- Advanced Void: server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled decides whether the void upgrade can void anything or only has the overflow option. The pack has it set to true.[5]
- Refill keeps topping up a stack of selected items in your inventory. The Advanced Refill also lets you pick the target slot more precisely and middle-click pick blocks from the backpack.[4]
- Feeding Upgrade: feeds you with food from the backpack. The Advanced version adds more options for when food gets fed.[3][4]
- Compacting Upgrade: compacts items into their compressed variants, but only 2x2 recipes. The Advanced version handles both 2x2 and 3x3.[3][4]
- Alchemy Upgrade: automatically uses potions, food with effects, or milk buckets. The Advanced version adds effect filtering.[3][4]
Filter sizes are set per upgrade in the server config. In this pack the Advanced Filter, Deposit, Restock, Pickup, Magnet, Void, Feeding and Compacting upgrades each have 16 filter slots. Advanced Refill has 12 and Advanced Alchemy has 8, while the basic Alchemy Upgrade has 4. The Advanced Jukebox has 12 disc slots. All of these match the mod defaults.[5]
Several of these upgrades are crafted from the Upgrade Base, and the pack changed their recipes. Here are some examples.[3]

Fluids, experience and energy
The Tank upgrade replaces part of the backpack's inventory with fluid storage. The Pump upgrade then moves fluids between that tank and adjacent blocks. The Advanced Pump also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and it can filter which fluids get pumped. The XP Pump moves experience between the Tank upgrade and the player. The Battery upgrade replaces part of the inventory with energy storage.[4]
Stack size upgrades
Stack upgrades change how many stacks fit in each slot. They go from x1.5 (Starter tier) through x2, x4, x8 and x16 (tiers 1 to 4). The Omega tier raises the stack size limit to 2,147,483,647. Stack downgrades go the other way and divide the number of stacks per slot by 8, 16 or 32 (tiers 1 to 3).[4]
Protection and access
The Everlasting Upgrade makes the backpack indestructible, so it can't despawn or fall into the void. The pack changed its recipe.[3][4]

This pack sets server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks to false. Other players can't right-click your worn backpack to open it, and the related settings are removed from the backpack. If a server owner turns it on, each backpack gets a toggle for whether a worn, visible backpack can be opened that way.[4][5]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?
6 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks progression in this pack lives in the Basic Storage quest chapter. It starts with the "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest quest, where you craft a plain Backpack. Backpacks can go in your Curios Back slot and can be dyed.[2]

Backpack tiers
The tier quests form one line: "Copper Backpack" quest, then "Iron Backpack" quest, "Gold Backpack" quest, "Diamond Backpack" quest and finally "Netherite Backpack" quest. In the recipes, the Copper, Gold and Diamond Backpacks are made by upgrading the tier below, and the Netherite step is a smithing upgrade.[2][3]

Upgrade Base and basic upgrades
Almost every upgrade branches off the Upgrade Base quest, a quest in "Basic Storage". Its quest text says you need Upgrade Base to make Backpack Upgrades. These are the basic upgrades the chapter lists, with the quest descriptions:[2]
- Pickup Upgrade lets the Backpack pick up items, and Magnet Upgrade magnets items into it.[2]
- Filter Upgrade adds a filter for items being pumped in or out, and Void Upgrade adds a filter for items you want auto-deleted.[2]
- Deposit Upgrade empties the Backpack into an inventory when you Shift-Right Click it. Restock Upgrade lets you pick which items to keep stocked, and Shift right-clicking an inventory refills it.[2]
- Refill Upgrade keeps your inventory stacked up from items inside the Backpack.[2]
- Feeding Upgrade auto-feeds you with food from the Backpack, and Tool Swapper Upgrade auto-swaps to the most effective tool for the block you are looking at.[2]
- Compacting Upgrade compacts items to their 2x2 recipe.[2]
- Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade, Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade, Smoking Upgrade and Jukebox Upgrade add the matching GUI to the Backpack.[2]
- Tank Upgrade adds a tank, Pump Upgrade pumps liquids from the Tank Upgrade, and Battery Upgrade adds a battery.[2]
- One quest accepts any of the seven Chipped upgrades, such as Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade or Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade. They add crafting GUIs for Chipped workbenches.[2]
Advanced upgrades
Each advanced upgrade has its own "More Filtering Options" quest that unlocks after the basic version, for example "Advanced Filter Upgrade" quest after the Filter Upgrade. In the pack's recipes, an advanced upgrade is crafted from its basic upgrade. Advanced Compacting Upgrade compacts to the 3x3 recipe instead of 2x2.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?
3 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks connects to two other mods in this pack that the sources confirm: Chipped and Sophisticated Storage. The quest text also mentions Curios, which is where you wear the backpack.[2][3]
Chipped workbench upgrades
If you use Chipped's workbenches, you can carry them with you. The pack has seven backpack upgrades, one for each Chipped workbench: Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade, Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade, Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade, Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade.[2][3]
The pack changes all seven of these recipes, so they are the pack's versions and not the mod defaults. Here is what each one needs:[2][3]

The Basic Storage questline has a quest for these, a quest in "Basic Storage". It comes after the Upgrade Base quest, and its task accepts any one of the seven Chipped upgrades. Its description says it adds crafting GUIs for Chipped Workbenches to your backpack.[2]
Converting upgrades with Sophisticated Storage
Sophisticated Backpacks and Sophisticated Storage share many upgrade types, and the pack adds recipes that convert an upgrade from one mod into the other. All of these conversion recipes are marked as changed by the pack.[3]
Going from a storage upgrade to a backpack upgrade, the sources show recipes for the Crafting, Compacting, Feeding, Filter, Jukebox, Magnet, Pickup, Smelting, Smoking, Blasting, Stonecutter, Void and Alchemy upgrades. They also cover the Advanced and Auto versions where those exist, and the seven Chipped upgrades. Here is the Magnet example:[2][3]

The stack upgrades are not matched tier for tier, so check the names before you convert. Storage's Stack Upgrade Tier 2 becomes the backpack's Stack Upgrade Tier 1. The same one-step shift applies up the line: Storage's Tier 3 becomes the backpack's Tier 2, Tier 4 becomes Tier 3, and Tier 5 becomes Tier 4. Storage's Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus becomes the backpack's Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, and the Omega Tier maps to the Omega Tier. The three stack downgrades convert tier to tier.[3]

Going the other way, the sources show recipes that turn backpack upgrades into storage upgrades. They cover the Advanced Alchemy, Compacting, Feeding, Filter, Jukebox, Magnet, Pickup and Void upgrades, plus Alchemy, Auto-blasting, Auto-smelting, Auto-smoking and Blasting, and the Chipped Alchemy Bench and Botanist's Workbench upgrades. Curios
The first quest in the chapter notes that backpacks can be worn in your Curios Back slot, and that they can be dyed.[2]
Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Sophisticated Backpacks?
5 parts
Everything for this mod lives in a single quest chapter called Basic Storage. Every quest is an item-submission task, so you hand in the item and tick the quest off. There are no other chapters for it in the sources I was given.[2]
Start here
The chapter opens with "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest, which asks for a Backpack. The quest text says backpacks can be worn in your Curios Back slot and can be dyed. Two quests unlock right after it: "Copper Backpack" quest (a Copper Backpack) and a quest in "Basic Storage", which asks for an Upgrade Base. The quest text says you need those to make backpack upgrades.[2]
The backpack tier line
The tier quests run in a straight line. "Iron Backpack" quest needs both the first backpack quest and the Copper Backpack quest done. After it come "Gold Backpack" quest, then "Diamond Backpack" quest, and finally "Netherite Backpack" quest.[2]
Basic upgrades
Once you've handed in the Upgrade Base, a big batch of upgrade quests opens up at the same time, so you can take them in any order. Each one asks for the upgrade itself:[2]
- Storage and inventory: Deposit Upgrade, Restock Upgrade, Refill Upgrade, Void Upgrade, Filter Upgrade and Compacting Upgrade.[2]
- Picking things up: Pickup Upgrade and Magnet Upgrade.[2]
- Machines in your pack: Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade, Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade and Smoking Upgrade.[2]
- Fluids and power: Tank Upgrade, Pump Upgrade and Battery Upgrade.[2]
- Quality of life: Feeding Upgrade, Tool Swapper Upgrade, Jukebox Upgrade, Everlasting Upgrade and Inception Upgrade.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" accepts any one of the seven Chipped workbench upgrades, for example the Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade or the Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade.[2]
Stack upgrades
The stack upgrades form their own chain, starting after the Upgrade Base. "Stack Upgrade Tier 1" quest is first, and its text says it increases stack size in the backpack by 2. Then come "Stack Upgrade Tier 2" quest (by 4), "Stack Upgrade Tier 3" quest (by 8) and "Stack Upgrade Tier 4" quest (by 16), each unlocked by the one before.[2]
Advanced and automatic upgrades
Many of the basic upgrades unlock an Advanced version, each introduced as More Filtering Options. Each one needs its basic upgrade quest done first:[2]
- "Advanced Deposit Upgrade" quest follows the Deposit Upgrade, and "Advanced Restock Upgrade" quest follows the Restock Upgrade.[2]
- "Advanced Refill Upgrade" quest follows the Refill Upgrade, and "Advanced Void Upgrade" quest follows the Void Upgrade.[2]
- "Advanced Filter Upgrade" quest follows the Filter Upgrade, and "Advanced Pickup Upgrade" quest follows the Pickup Upgrade.[2]
- "Advanced Magnet Upgrade" quest follows the Magnet Upgrade, and "Advanced Feeding Upgrade" quest follows the Feeding Upgrade.[2]
- "Advanced Tool Swapper Upgrade" quest follows the Tool Swapper Upgrade, and "Advanced Pump Upgrade" quest follows the Pump Upgrade.[2]
- "Advanced Compacting Upgrade" quest follows the Compacting Upgrade. Its text says it compacts to the 3x3 recipe, while the basic one handles the 2x2 recipe.[2]
The furnace-type upgrades get an Automatic follow-up too: "Auto-Smelting Upgrade" quest after the Smelting Upgrade, "Auto-Blasting Upgrade" quest after the Blasting Upgrade, and "Auto-Smoking Upgrade" quest after the Smoking Upgrade.[2]
The last quest in the chapter is "Experience Pump Upgrade" quest, titled Storing XP. It unlocks after the Advanced Pump Upgrade and asks for the Experience Pump Upgrade. Its text says it lets you pump experience between you and the backpack.[2]
Which Sophisticated Backpacks config options matter?
4 parts
Everything below lives in the server config for Sophisticated Backpacks. For every numeric option where the file lists a mod default, this pack's value matches that default. So the sizes, ranges and speeds here are not changed from the mod's own numbers. These are the options you're most likely to care about, with the exact values the pack uses.[5]
Backpack sizes
- Leather: 27 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.leatherBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.leatherBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.copperBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.copperBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots and 2 upgrade slots (server.ironBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.ironBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots and 3 upgrade slots (server.goldBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.goldBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots and 5 upgrade slots (server.diamondBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.diamondBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Netherite: 120 inventory slots and 7 upgrade slots (server.netheriteBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.netheriteBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
Upgrade limits and ranges
server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many of certain upgrade types fit in one backpack. The pack allows 3 stack upgrades, 1 jukebox upgrade and 1 furnace upgrade.[5]
The basic magnet pulls in items within 3 blocks (server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange), and the advanced magnet reaches 5 blocks (server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[5]
The smelting, blasting and smoking upgrades, plus their auto versions, all run at a speed multiplier of 1 and a fuel efficiency multiplier of 1. That matches vanilla furnace speed, for example server.smeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier.[5]
The tank upgrade gives 4,000 mB per row of storage slots (server.tankUpgrade.capacityPerSlotRow). The battery side gives 10,000 FE per row (server.tankUpgrade.energyPerSlotRow). The XP pump uses at most 5 experience points per mending operation, and mending is turned on (server.xpPumpUpgrade.maxXpPointsPerMending, server.xpPumpUpgrade.mendingOn).[5]
The void upgrade and advanced void upgrade both allow voiding anything, not just overflow (server.voidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled, server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled).[5]
Carrying and sharing rules
- Too many backpacks in your inventory does not slow you down here: server.nerfs.tooManyBackpacksSlowness is false. The threshold is set to 3 backpacks (server.nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks), but it only matters if slowness gets turned on.[5]
- Active upgrades such as magnet, pickup, cooking and feeding are not limited to the backpack you are wearing, because server.nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false.[5]
- You can't right-click another player's worn backpack to open it, because server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is false. The config notes that this setting turns the capability off for everyone and removes the related settings from the backpack.[5]
- Backpacks can't be placed in container items, since server.canBePlacedInContainerItems is false.[5]
- The inception upgrade is fully functional: upgrades inside contained backpacks work, and they use those backpacks' inventories (server.inceptionUpgrade.upgradesInContainedBackpacksAreFunctional, server.inceptionUpgrade.upgradesUseInventoriesOfBackpacksInBackpack).[5]
- The pack doesn't blacklist anything: server.disallowedItems, server.noConnectionBlocks and server.noInteractionBlocks are all empty.[5]
- The stack upgrade won't stack bundles or any colour of shulker box (server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems).[5]
Mobs wearing backpacks
Each entity has a 0.01 chance of spawning with a backpack (server.entityBackpackAdditions.chance). A mob drops its backpack with a 0.5 chance when a player kills it (server.entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance), plus 0.15 per looting level (server.entityBackpackAdditions.lootingChanceIncreasePerLevel). Loot, armor, health buffs, potion effects and jukebox playing are all enabled for these mobs. Fake players don't get the drop (server.entityBackpackAdditions.dropToFakePlayers is false).[5]
