What is Pickle Tweaks?

2 parts

Pickle Tweaks is a Vanilla+ mod: it adds handy quality-of-life features and a few early-game tools without changing how Minecraft plays. The pack ships version 9.0.7. Every feature can be switched off individually in the config file, so what you see in the pack depends on its settings.[1][2]

What it adds

  • Crafting grid repair: fix broken tools and weapons in a crafting grid using their repair materials, much like an Anvil.[1]
  • Paxels, which combine an Axe, Pickaxe and Shovel, plus Sickles and Scythes. Sickles mine plant blocks in an area, and Scythes harvest and replant crops in an area and also work as an area weapon.[1]
  • Right-click crop harvesting: right-clicking a fully grown crop harvests and replants it.[1]
  • Flint and Emerald tools and armor, which are the main way you meet this mod in the pack.[1][3][4]
  • Watering Cans, which speed up crop growth in an area. The mod lists a basic 3x3 version and a Reinforced 7x7 version.[1]
  • Night Vision Goggles in basic and Reinforced variants, an Item Magnet that pulls in items and experience orbs, and Meshes used to get Flint from Gravel.[1]
  • Diamond and Emerald Apples, which give extra buffs.[1][5]
  • Tooltip extras: mining speed and level on tools, valid ammo count on bows, and a harvest level line in Jade or HWYLA.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

You meet Pickle Tweaks right at the start. In the first chapter, "Collecting Leaves" quest has you craft Flint Shears, which work like normal Shears but are cheaper, so you can collect Leaves.[6]

Flint gear is your early armor and tool step. "Flint Armor" quest is probably the first armor you'll get, and the Basic Tools chapter asks for a Flint Pickaxe and later an Emerald Pickaxe.[3][4]

Emerald gear is the next upgrade. "Emerald Armor" quest describes the Emerald armor as having stats similar to diamond armor but being almost free, since emeralds are easy to get.[3]

Later, the Watering Can counts for the watering can quest in the Mystical Agriculture chapter, alongside the Mystical Agriculture version. The Emerald Apple and Diamond Apple count for the crystallized apples quest in Food and Farming, which calls them superfoods with a wide array of buffs.[5][7]

Unverified This section does not confirm which of the mod's features the pack has disabled or re-tuned in its config, or what the exact in-pack stats of the tools and armor are. Check the recipe and config sections of this guide before relying on the default values from the mod's project page.

How do you get started with Pickle Tweaks?

5 parts

Pickle Tweaks adds Vanilla+ style tools, armor and handy gadgets, and in this pack you meet it right at the start. Flint is the starting material, emeralds take over later, and the farming helpers come once you have crops. The pack changes the mod's recipes, so the recipe blocks below show the pack's own versions.[1][8]

Flint Shears

Your first Pickle Tweaks item is the Flint Shears. The quest "Collecting Leaves" quest in Chapter 1 says they take just 2 Flint and work like normal Shears, only cheaper. You need them to get Leaves, and Wool if you need it.[6]

Flint pickaxe and armor

Once you have Flint and a wooden rod, make the Flint Pickaxe. The Basic Tools chapter has a quest for it (Tier: 3) and another for the Emerald Pickaxe (Tier: 4).[4][8]

Next comes armor. The quest "Flint Armor" quest in the Basic Armor chapter calls it probably the first armor you'll get in this pack, because flint is pretty easy to come by. It asks for the helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots.[3]

Step up to emerald

The quest "Emerald Armor" quest says Emerald armor has stats similar to diamond armor but is basically free, because emeralds are easy to get. That makes it a natural upgrade over flint.[3]

Farming and quality-of-life items

When you start growing crops, craft a Watering Can. The mod's project page lists a basic (3x3) variant and a Reinforced (7x7) one. To use a can, fill it by right-clicking a Water source block, then hold right-click on a crop. The quest a quest in "Mystical Agriculture" explains this.[1][7]

How does Pickle Tweaks work?

6 parts

Pickle Tweaks isn't a machine mod. It describes itself as a collection of Vanilla+ style features and tweaks. The sources for this pack don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or pipe-style automation for it, so I won't invent any. What follows is how its item-based systems work.[1]

Crafting grid repair and tool breaking

You can repair broken tools and weapons right in a crafting grid using their repair materials, much like an anvil. A separate tweak makes tools and weapons ineffective 1 use before they break, so you get a chance to repair them first.[1]

Area tools and crop handling

Right-clicking a fully grown crop harvests and replants it. Sickles mine plant material blocks in an area. Scythes harvest and replant crops in an area and also work as an area weapon.[1]

The pack has recipes for scythes and sickles in several materials, for example Flint Scythe, Golden Scythe, Diamond Scythe and Emerald Scythe, plus matching sickles such as Flint Sickle and Emerald Sickle. The recipe dump marks these recipes as changed by the pack.[8]

Watering cans

Watering cans increase crop growth speed in an area. The basic version covers a 3x3 area and the Reinforced version covers 7x7.[1]

Coal and charcoal pieces

Coal and Charcoal Pieces each cook 1 item. In this pack you make them by crafting Coal Piece from anything in the coal tag and Charcoal Piece from charcoal. Both recipes are marked as changed by the pack.[1][8]

Other systems

  • Tool information tooltips add mining speed and mining level to tools, and show how much valid ammo you carry on bow tooltips.[1]
  • If Jade or HWYLA is installed, the mod adds the harvest level of a block to its tooltip.[1]
  • Night Vision Goggles grant night vision while worn, in basic and Reinforced variants.[1][9]
  • The Item Magnet attracts items and experience orbs to you.[1]
  • Meshes are used to craft Flint from Gravel.[1]
  • Diamond and Emerald Apples give additional buffs. In this pack, Diamond Apple and Emerald Apple are crafted from an apple plus the matching gem.[1][8]

The Tool Uselessifier

The config lets you list tools that can't break blocks, deal damage and so on. Affected items show tooltips such as "This tool cannot mine anything. It can only be used for crafting." Similar tooltips exist for hoes, bows and weapons.[1][9]

Unverified The mod page says every feature can be disabled individually in its config file, but no config file for this mod was available for the pack. It is unverified which features are on or off here, and which tools, if any, are marked useless.

How do you progress through Pickle Tweaks?

5 parts

Pickle Tweaks gives you a short ladder in this pack: flint gear first, emerald gear second, with scythes, sickles and a few utility items around the edges. Every Pickle Tweaks recipe in the pack dump is marked as changed by the pack, so don't rely on the mod's default recipes. Use the recipe blocks below instead.[8]

Flint

The "Flint Armor" quest quest in the Basic Armor chapter calls this probably the first armor you'll get, because flint is pretty easy to come by. It asks for Flint Helmet, Flint Chestplate, Flint Leggings and Flint Boots.[3]

Flint also covers your early tools. The Basic Tools chapter has a quest for the Flint Pickaxe, tagged Tier: 3.[4]

Emerald

"Emerald Armor" quest is the next step up. Per the quest, the emerald armor from Pickle Tweaks has stats similar to diamond armor but is basically free, since emeralds are easy to get. The quest asks for Emerald Helmet, Emerald Chestplate, Emerald Leggings and Emerald Boots.[3]

The matching tool quest is the Emerald Pickaxe, tagged Tier: 4 in Basic Tools.[4]

The rest of the emerald tools, Emerald Sword, Emerald Axe, Emerald Shovel and Emerald Hoe, have in-pack recipes too. So does the flint set: Flint Sword, Flint Axe, Flint Shovel and Flint Hoe.[8]

Scythes and sickles

Pickle Tweaks adds a scythe and a sickle for many materials. In the pack dump they run from wood (Wooden Scythe, Wooden Sickle) through stone, flint, gold, iron, diamond and emerald. The top step is netherite, which is a smithing upgrade of the diamond version rather than a normal crafting recipe.[8]

pickletweaks:netherite_sickle follows the same smithing pattern, starting from the diamond sickle.

Farming and food side track

The Mystical Agriculture chapter has a quest that accepts either the Mystical Agriculture watering can or the Watering Can. Its text explains filling the can by right-clicking a Water source block, then holding right-click on a crop to water the crops within the can's area. The auto-watering toggle in that text is described for Essence Watering Cans.[7]

Items such as the Magnet, Night Vision Goggles and Reinforced Night Vision Goggles have in-pack recipes. None of the quests in the sources mention them, so the quest book doesn't place them on a tier.[8]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Pickle Tweaks?

5 parts

Pickle Tweaks shows up in five quest chapters in this pack. Its items are the early flint and emerald gear, plus a watering can and two special apples. Here they are, chapter by chapter.[3][4][5][6][7]

Chapter 1: Starting out

Your first Pickle Tweaks quest is "Collecting Leaves" quest. It unlocks after the Flint quest and asks you to hold Flint Shears and oak leaves. The quest says that with just 2 Flint you can make the shears. They work like normal Shears but are cheaper, and you'll want them for leaves and wool.[6]

Basic Tools

Untitled quests in this chapter ask for Pickle Tweaks pickaxes. Both unlock after the chapter's opening quest. a quest in "Basic Tools" asks for the Flint Pickaxe and is listed as Tier 3. a quest in "Basic Tools" asks for the Emerald Pickaxe and is listed as Tier 4. So the flint pickaxe is the earlier step and the emerald one comes after it.[4]

Basic Armor

This chapter has armor quests for a flint set and an emerald set, and each one asks for the full set. "Flint Armor" quest wants the Flint Helmet, Flint Chestplate, Flint Leggings and Flint Boots. The quest calls it probably the first armor you'll get, since flint is easy to find.[3]

"Emerald Armor" quest asks for the Emerald Helmet, Emerald Chestplate, Emerald Leggings and Emerald Boots. According to the quest text, this set has stats similar to diamond armor, and emeralds are easy to get.[3]

Mystical Agriculture

a quest in "Mystical Agriculture" is an untitled quest that unlocks after the chapter's opening quest. It accepts either the Mystical Agriculture watering can or the Watering Can. To use the can, fill it by right-clicking a water source block. Then hold right-click on a crop to water everything in its area of effect.[7]

The quest also says Essence Watering Cans can auto-water. Shift-right-click the can in the air to toggle it, and the can looks enchanted while it's on.[7]

Food and Farming

a quest in "Food and Farming" is titled "Crystallized apples" and unlocks after the "Notch" apple quest. You can complete it with the Emerald Apple, the Diamond Apple, or a relic apple from another mod. The quest describes them as superfoods that give a wide array of buffs, depending on the apple.[5]

What changed in Pickle Tweaks between versions?

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships with Pickle Tweaks 9.0.7 for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier. Here are the recent releases of the mod, newest first.[2]

  • 9.0.7: Fixed the repair material for Emerald Armor. This is the version your pack runs.[2][10]
  • 9.0.6: Added the Flint Pickaxe and the Emerald Pickaxe to the c:tools/mining_tool tag. Default values were added to the pickletweaks:incorrect_for_flint_tool and pickletweaks:incorrect_for_emerald_tool tags, and the pt_br translations were updated.[11]
  • 9.0.5: Fixed Smooth Glowstone not dropping Glowstone Dust when broken without Silk Touch.[12]

Since the pack is on 9.0.7, the fixes from 9.0.5 and 9.0.6 are part of the version in your game too.[2][10][11][12]

Unverified The sources here include no pack changelog entries for this mod, so whether the pack itself changed anything about Pickle Tweaks across its releases is unverified.
