Mob Grinding Utils is a mod in All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.1.0, where it is version 1.1.10+mc1.21.1. A Mod that adds fun ways to make mob farms (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Mob Grinding Utils?

2 parts

Mob Grinding Utils is a mob-farming mod, and this pack ships version 1.1.10 for Minecraft 1.21.1. The pack's quests call it very helpful for mob farming, especially in limited worlds like Skyblock. If you want drops and XP without wandering around hunting mobs, this mod is for you.[1][2]

How a farm fits together

The mod gives you a piece for each stage of a farm: collecting, spawning, moving and killing. Your first step is the quest "Getting Fluid XP" quest in Chapter 2: The Cool Parts. It has you make an Absorption Hopper and a Singularity Tank. The hopper picks up items and XP dropped in an area around it, and the tank stores XP as Fluid XP that you can collect by right-clicking it with a bucket.[2]

  • Moving mobs: the Mob Fan pushes items and mobs. By default it needs a Redstone signal and blows up to 5 blocks, and its upgrades make it wider, higher and farther. The Entity Conveyor moves mobs in the direction it is placed, but it can't be made faster.[2]
  • Killing mobs: Iron Spikes damage any mob that touches their top. The Mob Masher needs a Redstone signal and its drops count as player kills. It can be upgraded for more damage, Looting and Fire Aspect.[2]
  • Boosting spawns: Nutritious Chicken Feed leads to Delightful Dirt for passive mobs. GM Chicken Feed Cursed leads to Dreadful Dirt for hostile mobs. Both make up to a 5x5 area.[2]

Spawners and Spawn Eggs

The mod also has its own spawner, the Entity Spawner. It needs a Spawn Egg, XP Jelly Babies and a Redstone signal. You make the jelly babies by running XP through an XP Solidifier with the XP Mould Jelly Baby. This is covered in the Apothic Spawners chapter, in the quest a quest in "Apothic Spawners".[3]

If you need Spawn Eggs, the Mob Swab is the route the quest book recommends. You right-click a mob with it, craft GM Chicken Feed and feed it to a chicken. The chicken doesn't survive, and not every mob can be swabbed. See a quest in "Apothic Spawners".[3]

Unverified The sources don't show this mod on the ATM Star path, so treat it as an optional side system rather than a required step.

How do you get started with Mob Grinding Utils?

4 parts

Mob Grinding Utils is built for mob farming, which is a big deal in a limited world like a skyblock. The pack's quest book starts you off with Fluid XP, so that's where we begin too.[2]

Step 1: Collect XP with a Singularity Tank and an Absorption Hopper

The quest "Getting Fluid XP" quest asks for an Absorption Hopper and a Singularity Tank. The hopper picks up dropped items and XP around it and stores them. Its GUI lets you change the collecting area and where it sends items and XP. Send the XP into the tank and it's stored as Fluid XP, and you can right-click the tank with a bucket to take it out.[2]

The hopper vacuums a 7x7x7 area, and Absorption Radius Upgrade items increase the range.[4]

Step 2: Kill mobs with Iron Spikes, then the Mob Masher

Next, Iron Spikes damage any mob that touches their top. The quest warns they aren't cheap or easy to craft. Spikes also drop the mob's XP, but kills from spikes don't count as player kills, so items that need a player kill won't drop.[2][4]

When you want those player-kill drops, upgrade to the Mob Masher ("Mob Masher" quest). It needs a redstone signal to work, and mobs it mashes do count as player kills. It also takes upgrades that raise damage, add looting and even give fire aspect, such as Mob Masher Upgrade Looting and Mob Masher Upgrade Fire.[2][4]

Step 3: Move mobs around

The Mob Fan ("Fans" quest) pushes mobs and items. By default it runs on a redstone signal and blows up to 5 blocks in front of it. Upgrades make it wider, higher and farther, and you add them by right-clicking the fan.[2]

Entity Conveyor ("Entity Conveyors" quest) move mobs in the direction you place them, and mobs can spawn on top of them. They can't be sped up, and only fans can be upgraded.[2][4]

Step 4: Get spawn eggs

The Entity Spawner needs a spawn egg, XP Jelly Babies and a redstone signal. A Mob Swab is a handy way to get the egg. Right-click a mob with it, then craft GM Chicken Feed from the used swab. Feed that to a chicken to get a spawn egg. The chicken doesn't survive, and not every mob can be swabbed.[3][5]

Once you have an egg, the Entity Spawner (a quest in "Apothic Spawners") can spawn mobs in a 3x3x1 area, with the egg in the top slot and Jelly Babies in the second. Jelly Babies come from the XP Solidifier with the XP Mould Jelly Baby.[3][4]

Tip: The Dreadful Dirt and Delightful Dirt quests ("Dreadful Dirt" quest and "Delightful Dirt" quest) also start from Fluid XP. Each takes 4 buckets, and they boost hostile and passive spawns respectively.[2]

How does Mob Grinding Utils work?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mons 0.6.0-beta guide

Mob Grinding Utils is a toolkit for building mob farms: you spawn mobs, herd them, kill them, then collect the drops and the XP. The details below come from the mod's own in-game tooltips and descriptions, plus the pack's recipe list.[6][7]

Unverified No config file for this mod is available in the pack sources, so any value the pack might have changed through config is unconfirmed. The numbers below are what the mod's tooltips state.

Spawning mobs

The Entity Spawner spawns mobs in a 3x3x1 area. You put a mob egg in its top slot, and it is fuelled by XP Jelly Baby items. It is enhanced with XP Speed Upgrades and the Entity Spawner Height Upgrade and Entity Spawner Width Upgrade. In its GUI you can toggle the area of effect and offset the position.[6]

For passive spawning, the mod has two special dirt blocks. Delightful Dirt spawns more creature mobs, and a light level below 10 stops those spawns. It does not work in ocean biomes. Dreadful Dirt spawns more hostile mobs, and a light level of 5 and above stops those spawns.[6]

You lay these blocks down with eggs. A Golden Egg creates a 5x5 area of Delightful Dirt, and a Rotten Egg creates a 5x5 area of Dreadful Dirt. Both are used on grass, dirt, mycelium or farmland. The chicken feed tooltips mention these eggs: the feed is single use for the chicken and creates either a Rotten Egg or a Golden Egg.[6]

Moving mobs

The Mob Fan pushes mobs in the direction it faces, and you can toggle its area of effect in its GUI. Its upgrades each add +1: Distance up to a max of 10, Height up to a max of 3, and Width up to a max of 3.[6]

The Entity Conveyor moves mobs and items along a horizontal vector. Mobs can also spawn on it.[6]

Killing mobs

Iron Spikes are the basic option. They also drop the mob's XP, but mobs killed by spikes do not count as player kills.[6]

The Mob Masher is the advanced, modular grinder. Mobs it mashes do count as player kills. It takes Mob Masher upgrades for Arthropods, Beheading, Fire, Looting, Sharpness and Smite. Each upgrade adds +1 of its enchantment-style effect, up to a maximum.[6]

Tip: If your farm needs player kills, for example for drops that require them, use the Mob Masher instead of spikes.[6]

Collecting drops and XP

The Absorption Hopper vacuums up items and XP orbs in a 7x7x7 area. You can configure it to push out on any side, so fluids go into tanks and items go into inventories. The Absorption Radius Upgrade increases its range by +1 each, up to a max of 6. In its GUI you can toggle the area of effect and offset the position on each axis.[6]

Farm utilities

  • Tinted Glass lets you see inside the farm without letting light in, and it is tough enough to withstand Withers.[6]
  • The Ender Inhibitor stops teleportation for entities up to 8 blocks away. It attaches to any side of solid blocks, and you right click it to activate or deactivate it.[6]
  • The Ender Dragon Death Muffler stops Ender Dragon death sounds within a 32 block radius. Right click it to hide the boss bar.[6]
  • The Wither Boss Death Muffler works the same way for Wither death sounds, within an 8 block radius.[6]

How do you progress through Mob Grinding Utils?

6 parts

Mob Grinding Utils doesn't have formal tiers in this pack. Instead, the quests walk you through it in stages. You start with fluid XP, then move on to killing, moving and spawning mobs. The main path lives in the Cool Parts chapter, and the spawner branch sits in the Apothic Spawners chapter.[2][3]

Stage 1: Collect XP

Everything starts with "Getting Fluid XP" quest. You need an Absorption Hopper and a Singularity Tank. The hopper picks up items and XP dropped in an area around it, and you can change that area in its GUI. The tank stores the XP as Fluid XP, and you can right-click it with a bucket to pull the fluid out. Every other quest in the chapter unlocks after this one.[2]

Stage 2: Kill mobs

Iron Spikes are the first killer. Any mob touching the top takes damage, and if it dies it drops its loot and XP. The quest warns that they aren't cheap or easy to craft.[2]

"Mob Masher" quest comes next and gives you the Mob Masher. It needs a redstone signal, and mobs that touch it drop items as if a player had killed them. That is the key difference from spikes.[2]

Tip: Spikes won't drop certain items if the item requires the player to make the kill. The Mob Masher counts as a player kill, so switch to it when you need those drops.[2]

Like fans, the Masher takes upgrades. The quest mentions more damage, looting and Fire Aspect, which are covered by Mob Masher Upgrade Sharpness, Mob Masher Upgrade Looting and Mob Masher Upgrade Fire. The pack also has recipes for the smite, arthropod and beheading upgrades.[2][5]

Stage 3: Move mobs

The upgrades are Mob Fan Width Upgrade, Mob Fan Height Upgrade and Mob Fan Distance Upgrade.[2][5]

"Entity Conveyors" quest gives you the Entity Conveyor. It moves mobs in the direction you place it, and mobs can spawn on top of it unless they need a specific block. You can't make conveyors faster, since only fans can be upgraded.[2]

Stage 4: Better spawns with special dirt

Both dirt quests need Fluid XP, so they come after the first stage. Each one turns a special chicken feed into an egg. Placing that egg on dirt makes up to a 5x5 patch of special dirt.[2]

  • "Delightful Dirt" quest (Delightful Dirt) uses Nutritious Chicken Feed. It needs 4 buckets of Fluid XP, and the quest says the crops come from sieving dirt. Feed it to a chicken to get a Golden Egg. The resulting dirt spawns passive mobs much more commonly.[2]
  • "Dreadful Dirt" quest (Dreadful Dirt) uses GM Chicken Feed Cursed. It also needs 4 buckets of Fluid XP. Feed it to a chicken to get a Rotten Egg. The resulting dirt spawns hostile mobs when it's dark, at about 10 times the rate.[2]

Stage 5: Spawn eggs and the Entity Spawner

The Apothic Spawners chapter has two quests. The first is the swab route to spawn eggs. Right-click a mob with a Mob Swab, craft the used swab into GM Chicken Feed, and feed it to a chicken. The quest says any type of XP fluid works, that the chicken doesn't survive, and that not every mob can be swabbed.[3][5]

Quest-driven connections

Tip: Start with "Getting Fluid XP" quest. An Absorption Hopper feeding a Singularity Tank stores XP as Fluid XP, and the chicken feed quests above ask for buckets of it.[2]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Mob Grinding Utils?

2 parts

Mob Grinding Utils shows up in two quest chapters in this pack: Chapter 2: The Cool Parts, which walks you through the core machines, and Apothic Spawners, which covers getting spawn eggs and spawning mobs with this mod.[2][3]

Chapter 2: The Cool Parts

Everything starts with "Getting Fluid XP" quest, which asks for an Absorption Hopper and a Singularity Tank. The hopper picks up items and XP dropped in an area around it, and you can change that area and where it sends XP and items in its GUI. Send the XP into the tank and it's stored as Fluid XP, which you can collect by right-clicking the tank with a bucket.[2]

Once that's done, five quests open up, all following Fluid XP:[2]

  • "Fans" quest asks for a Mob Fan. By default it activates with a redstone signal and blows items and mobs up to 5 blocks in front of it. Upgrades let it blow wider, higher and farther.[2]
  • "Entity Conveyors" quest asks for an Entity Conveyor. It moves mobs in the direction it's placed, and mobs can spawn on top of it. The quest says conveyors can't be made faster, only Fans can be upgraded.[2]
  • "Delightful Dirt" quest (for passive mobs) asks for Nutritious Chicken Feed. Feeding it to a chicken costs the chicken's life and gives a Golden Egg, which you place on dirt to make at most a 5x5 area of Delightful Dirt. That dirt spawns passive mobs much more commonly than normal dirt.[2]
  • "Dreadful Dirt" quest (for hostile mobs) asks for GM Chicken Feed Cursed. The chicken that eats it explodes and leaves a Rotten Egg, which makes up to a 5x5 area of Dreadful Dirt. That dirt spawns hostile mobs when it's dark, at roughly 10 times the usual rate.[2]
  • a quest in "Chapter 2: The Cool Parts" is an untitled quest asking for Iron Spikes. Any mob touching the top takes damage, and if it dies it drops its loot and XP. Items that require a player kill won't drop.[2]

The last quest in the chapter is "Mob Masher" quest, which unlocks after the Iron Spikes quest and asks for the Mob Masher. It needs a redstone signal, and mobs touching it drop items as if a player had killed them. Like Fans, it can be upgraded for more damage, Looting and even Fire Aspect.[2]

Apothic Spawners

Unverified Both Apothic Spawners quests follow quests from other chapters that aren't covered by the sources for this mod, so the exact order between these two quests, and how they connect to Chapter 2, is unconfirmed.
