What is Mob Grinding Utils?
2 parts
Mob Grinding Utils is a mob farming mod, and this pack ships version 1.1.10 for Minecraft 1.21.1. If you like building automated farms for drops and XP, this is the mod for you.[1][2]
The pack's quest book covers it in the Apothic Spawners chapter, which shows how the mod gets you mobs without hunting for them.[2]
The Entity Spawner
The Entity Spawner is the mod's own spawner. It needs three things to run: a Spawn Egg in the top slot, XP Jelly Babies in the second slot, and a Redstone signal. Once all three are in place, it starts spawning mobs. See a quest in "Apothic Spawners" for the full walkthrough.[2]
You make the jelly babies by running XP through an XP Solidifier with the XP Mould Jelly Baby. You can eat them or use them as fuel in the spawner's second slot.[2]
Getting Spawn Eggs with Swabs
The quest book calls swabs a favorite way of getting Spawn Eggs. You right click a mob with a Mob Swab, then use it to craft GM Chicken Feed. Feed that to a Chicken and you get a Spawn Egg, but the Chicken doesn't survive. Not every mob can be swabbed. See a quest in "Apothic Spawners" for details.[2]
Unverified Where Mob Grinding Utils fits in the wider progression of the pack is not confirmed by the available sources. Only the Apothic Spawners quests for this mod were found.
How do you get started with Mob Grinding Utils?
5 parts
Mob Grinding Utils is all about mob farming. In this pack's quest book, the Apothic Spawners chapter has the quests that cover its spawner setup. Here is a sensible order to build things in, so each step gives you what the next one needs.[2]
Get a Spawn Egg with a Mob Swab
The Mob Swab is your starting point. Right click a mob with it, then use the used swab to craft GM Chicken Feed. Feed that to a chicken and you get a Spawn Egg, but the chicken won't survive. Not all mobs can be swabbed. The quest a quest in "Apothic Spawners" covers this.[2][3]

Make the XP Jelly Baby mould
The Entity Spawner runs on XP Jelly Babies. You make those by processing XP through an XP Solidifier with the XP Mould Jelly Baby. Craft a blank mould first, then turn it into the Jelly Baby mould.[2][3]

Build the XP Solidifier
The XP Solidifier needs an XP Mould and Fluid XP in its tank. The recipes below are in build order: first the Singularity Tank, then the Entity Conveyor, then the solidifier itself.[3][4]

With the Jelly Baby mould in, it turns Fluid XP into XP Jelly Baby. You can speed it up later with XP Speed Upgrade.[2][3][4]
Craft the Entity Spawner
The spawner recipe uses Solid XP, and you can craft that from a Jelly Baby. That is why the solidifier comes first. The quest a quest in "Apothic Spawners" covers the setup.[2][3]

To run it, put the Spawn Egg in the top slot and Jelly Babies in the second slot, then give it a Redstone signal. It spawns mobs in a 3x3x1 area and can be upgraded.[2][4]
Add a way to kill the mobs
There are two options. Iron Spikes are the basic choice and also drop the mob's XP, but mobs killed by them do not count as player kills. The Mob Masher is the advanced modular grinder: mobs it mashes do count as player kills, and it can be enhanced with Mob Masher upgrades.[3][4]

How does Mob Grinding Utils work?
6 parts
Mob Grinding Utils is a set of standalone machines rather than one big multiblock. You place each block, set it up in its GUI where it has one, and connect it to the rest of your farm with conveyors, fans, hoppers and tanks. The sources for this pack don't describe any multiblock structure, so everything below is block by block.[4]
Moving mobs around
The Mob Fan pushes mobs in the direction it faces. You can modify it with Mob Fan Upgrades, and you can toggle its area of effect in its GUI. Each upgrade adds +1 to one dimension: Mob Fan Distance Upgrade (distance, max of 10), Mob Fan Height Upgrade (height, max of 3) and the Mob Fan Width Upgrade (width, max of 3).[4]

The Entity Conveyor moves mobs and items along a horizontal vector. Mobs can also spawn on it, which is handy when you want a spawning floor that doubles as transport. This pack makes six conveyors per craft.[3][4]

Killing mobs
The Mob Masher (Mob Masher) is the modular grinder. Mobs it kills do count as player kills, so you get player-only drops. You enhance it with Mob Masher Upgrades for Arthropods, Beheading, Fire, Looting, Sharpness and Smite. Each upgrade adds +1 of the matching enchantment effect up to a maximum.[4]

Iron Spikes are the basic option. They also drop the mob's XP, but mobs killed by spikes do not count as player kills. Pick spikes for plain XP and the Mob Masher when you need player kills.[4]
Spawning mobs
The Entity Spawner spawns mobs in a 3x3x1 area. It uses a mob egg in the top slot and is fuelled by Solid XP Jelly Babies. You can speed it up with XP Speed Upgrades and grow its area with Entity Spawner Height Upgrade and Entity Spawner Width Upgrade. Its area of effect can be toggled and its position offset in its GUI.[4]

For passive farms, Delightful Dirt spawns more creature mobs. It snow-caps at night if exposed to the sky, a light level below 10 stops creature spawns on it, and it does not work in ocean biomes. Dreadful Dirt does the same for hostile mobs: it ignites in daylight if exposed to the sky, and a light level of 5 and above stops hostile spawns.[4]
You can lay these dirts down with eggs. A Golden Egg creates a 5x5 area of Delightful Dirt and a Rotten Egg creates a 5x5 area of Dreadful Dirt. Both are used on Grass, Dirt, Mycelium or Farmland. Single-use chicken feed makes the eggs, and the feed tooltips mention both a Rotten Egg and a Golden Egg. The sources don't say which feed gives which egg.[4]
The Mob Swab collects 'DNA' when used on mobs. In this pack, a used swab plus seeds makes GM Chicken Feed, and a separate recipe makes GM Chicken Feed Cursed.[3][4]

Collecting items and XP
The Absorption Hopper vacuums up items and XP orbs in a 7x7x7 area. You can set it to push out on any side. Fluids insert into tanks and items into inventories. Each Absorption Radius Upgrade adds +1 to the radius, up to a max of 6. In its GUI you can toggle the area of effect and offset its position on the W/E, D/U and N/S axes.[4]

Fluid XP, tanks and jellies
The Jumbo Tank is a larger version of the Singularity Tank and holds 1024 buckets of any liquid. The XP Tap attaches to the side of a tank and turns fluid XP back into orbs. The mod also adds XP Drain Singularity Tank, but the sources don't explain what it does beyond its recipe.[3][4]

The mould decides what the solidifier makes. Solidifying with the XP Mould Jelly Baby makes XP Jelly Baby, which is what the Entity Spawner uses as fuel. The recipes below show how a blank XP Mould Blank becomes the Jelly Baby mould and how to reset it. Solid XP blocks are very bouncy.[3][4]

How do you progress through Mob Grinding Utils?
4 parts
Mob Grinding Utils is not split into formal tiers in this pack. The quest book gives you one route for it, the spawner route in the Apothic Spawners chapter, so that is the spine of this section. The rest is grouped by how far into the mod each item feels, based on the in-pack recipes.[2][3]
First step: get a Spawn Egg with a Mob Swab
The quest a quest in "Apothic Spawners" calls swabs its favorite way of getting Spawn Eggs. You right click a mob with a Mob Swab, use the used swab to craft GM Chicken Feed, then feed it to a Chicken. The Chicken won't survive, but you get a Spawn Egg. Not all mobs can be swabbed.[2][3]

Second step: XP Jelly Babies and the Entity Spawner
The quest a quest in "Apothic Spawners" introduces the Entity Spawner. It needs a Spawn Egg in the top slot, XP Jelly Babies in the second slot, and a Redstone signal. Once all of those are in place, it starts spawning mobs.[2]
You make XP Jelly Babies by running XP through an XP Solidifier with the XP Mould Jelly Baby. They can be eaten or used as fuel in the spawner's second slot. The quest's tasks are the Entity Spawner, the XP Solidifier and the Jelly Baby mould.[2][3]

Once the spawner works, you can add the Entity Spawner Width Upgrade and Entity Spawner Height Upgrade. You can also speed up the solidifier with the XP Speed Upgrade.[3]
Killing and collecting
The quests in the sources cover the spawner route above. For the rest, the in-pack recipes are your guide. These are the pieces that turn a spawner into a working grinder.[2][3]
- Killing: the Mob Masher (Mob Masher) and Iron Spikes. The Masher takes upgrades for sharpness, smite, arthropods, fire, looting and beheading: Mob Masher Upgrade Sharpness, Mob Masher Upgrade Smite, Mob Masher Upgrade Arthropods, Mob Masher Upgrade Fire, Mob Masher Upgrade Looting and Mob Masher Upgrade Beheading.[3]
- Moving mobs: the Entity Conveyor and the Mob Fan, with its Mob Fan Width Upgrade, Mob Fan Height Upgrade and Mob Fan Distance Upgrade.[3]
- Picking up drops: the Absorption Hopper and the Absorption Radius Upgrade.[3]
XP handling and extras
- Storing and moving XP: the Singularity Tank (Singularity Tank), the Jumbo Tank, the XP Drain Singularity Tank and the XP Tap.[3]
- Solid XP: Jelly Babies can be turned into Solid XP and back again.[3]
- Utility blocks: Tinted Glass and the Ender Inhibitor Active.[3]
- Boss mufflers: the Ender Dragon Death Muffler and the Wither Boss Death Muffler.[3]
- More chicken feeds: Nutritious Chicken Feed and GM Chicken Feed Cursed.[3]
Which All the Mons quests use Mob Grinding Utils?
3 parts
Mob Grinding Utils shows up in one quest chapter in this pack: Apothic Spawners. It holds two quests that cover the mod, one about the spawner block and one about getting Spawn Eggs.[2]
Apothic Spawners
The sources don't say how the two quests are ordered relative to each other. Each one unlocks after a different earlier quest, and neither of those earlier quests is described in the sources I have.[2]
- a quest in "Apothic Spawners" asks you to obtain the Entity Spawner, the XP Solidifier and the XP Mould Jelly Baby. It unlocks after one earlier quest in the chapter.[2]
- a quest in "Apothic Spawners" asks you to obtain the Mob Swab and the GM Chicken Feed. It unlocks after a different earlier quest.[2]
The spawner quest
The quest text explains that the Entity Spawner needs 3 things to work: a Spawn Egg, XP Jelly Babies and a Redstone signal. You make the Jelly Babies by running XP through the XP Solidifier with the XP Mould Jelly Baby. They can be eaten, or used as fuel in the spawner's second slot.[2]
Put the Spawn Egg in the top slot and the Jelly Babies in the second slot. Once it gets a Redstone signal, it starts spawning mobs.[2]
The Swab and Chicken Feed quest
This quest is about getting Spawn Eggs with the Mob Swab. You right click a mob with the Swab, then use it to make GM Chicken Feed. The quest text says any type of XP fluid works for that step.[2]
Feed the Chicken Feed to a Chicken and you get a Spawn Egg. The Chicken doesn't survive the process. The quest also warns that not all mobs can be swabbed.[2]
