What is Macaw's Fences and Walls?

1 part

Macaw's Fences and Walls adds new vanilla styled fences, walls and gates to Minecraft. If you want your builds to have more variety than the vanilla options, this is the mod for it.[1]

This pack includes version 1.2.1 of the mod.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The mod has its own quest, "Macaw's Fences and Walls" quest, in the "Building Tips" chapter, which has 67 quests in total. You reach it by following a chain: "Building Tips!" quest leads to "Decoration!" quest, then "Decor Mods!" quest, then "Macaw's Mods" quest, and finally the fences and walls quest.[3]

The Macaw's Mods quest introduces Macaw Sketch as a popular mod developer known for decor mods, and asks if you can craft everything he makes. The fences and walls quest comes straight after it, so it is one of that developer's mods.[3]

The quest says the mod adds new types of fences, gates and walls. It also gives you two warnings: the barbed wire will hurt you, and you can't jump over any of them normally.[3]

Half of this chapter's quests are not shown in the sources I have, so anything that follows the fences and walls quest is told in the "Building Tips" chapter of the quest book itself.[3]

How do you get started with Macaw's Fences and Walls?

3 parts

Macaw's Fences and Walls adds new vanilla-styled fences, walls and gates. In this pack every piece has a crafting recipe, so getting started is mostly about picking a style and making a few pieces to see how they look.[1][4]

Step 1: Pick a family

The recipes come in a few families. Wood types get fences like the Acacia Picket Fence, Acacia Stockade Fence, Acacia Horse Fence and Acacia Wired Fence, plus gates like the Acacia Curved Gate, Acacia Highley Gate and Acacia Pyramid Gate. Stone types get walls such as the Andesite Grass Topped Wall and Andesite Pillar Wall, plus railing gates like the Andesite Railing Gate.[4]

Acacia and andesite are just examples. Birch, cherry, dark oak, crimson, bamboo, blackstone, deepslate and diorite all have matching pieces in the recipe list.[4]

Step 2: Craft a few starter pieces

  1. Start with a fence. The Bamboo Fence is a good first test of how the mod's recipes work.[4]
  2. Try a hedge next. Leaf-style hedges like the Azalea Hedge have their own in-pack recipes.[4]
  3. Then build a stone wall, like the Andesite Pillar Wall, to see the pillar style up close.[4]
  4. Finish with a gate so your fence line is actually usable, like the metal gate below.[4]

Metal gates have their own recipe, built around the matching metal fence.

Stacking tip

Tip: The mod has a tooltip that reads "Can be stacked upwards to be taller". If you want a higher fence or wall, hover over a piece and check for that line before you build.[5]

How does Macaw's Fences and Walls work?

2 parts

This is the one mod in the pack where there's no machine to wire up. Macaw's Fences and Walls adds vanilla-styled fences, walls and gates, so it's all about building and decorating.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluid or item handling for this mod, and no config files for it were found in the pack. Treat anything beyond placing and crafting the blocks as unconfirmed.

Stacking for height

The mod's tooltip text says some pieces "can be stacked upwards to be taller". That's the only placement mechanic the sources spell out. They don't say which pieces carry that tooltip or how tall a stack can get, so check the tooltip in your inventory before planning a build around it.[5]

Crafting

Every recipe I can see for this mod in the pack is a standard shaped crafting recipe, so a regular crafting table is all you need. The pack's recipe dump lists 190 more that I can't see, so I can't confirm that rule for every item.[4]

Some pieces are crafted from other pieces of the mod. The Bastion Metal Fence Gate is made from the Bastion Metal Fence. Here is its in-pack recipe:[4]

Crafting Shaped

6 × Bastion Metal Fence

Recipe id: mcwfences:bastion_metal_fence_gate

Most wooden sets come in several styles. Acacia, for example, has the Acacia Picket Fence, the Acacia Stockade Fence and the Acacia Wired Fence. It also has gates like the Acacia Curved Gate. Here is one of them:[4]

Stone-style sets use different shapes, such as the Andesite Pillar Wall and the Andesite Railing Gate. Here is the pillar wall:[4]

Tip: Not sure how a specific piece is made? Look it up in the recipe viewer. The recipes the pack uses are the ones that count.[4]

How do you progress through Macaw's Fences and Walls?

5 parts

In this pack, Macaw's Fences and Walls has no gated tier system. Every recipe shown for it is a shaped crafting recipe, so you can start building as soon as you have the right materials. Your progression is really a choice of material family, and each family has its own set of shapes.[4]

Unverified The sources here do not show any quest that involves this mod. If you want to check for one, look in the pack's quest book.

Hedges and bamboo

Hedges exist for several trees, for example Acacia Hedge, Azalea Hedge and Flowering Azalea Hedge. Bamboo Fence is the plain bamboo option.[4]

Crafting Shaped

The other hedges in the recipe dump follow the same pattern with their own leaves.

Wooden fences and gates

Wood sets come in several styles: stockade fences, picket fences, horse fences, wired fences, and curved, highley and pyramid gates. Acacia, birch, cherry, dark oak, jungle and mangrove all follow the same pattern. Crimson uses its stems in the same recipes, and bamboo has its own variants built from bamboo blocks.[4]

Stone and deepslate walls

The stone-family sets give you pillar walls, grass topped walls and railing gates. They exist for andesite, diorite, granite, deepslate, deepslate brick, blackstone and End brick. A good example is Andesite Pillar Wall, and the same pattern repeats across the other stones.[4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Macaw's Fences and Walls?

3 parts

In this pack the mod shows up in one quest chapter, Building Tips. Its quest is "Macaw's Fences and Walls" quest, and the book describes it as the Macaw mod that adds new types of fences, gates and walls. The quest text also warns that the barbed wire will hurt you, and that you can't jump over any of them normally.[3]

The path to it

The chapter starts at "Building Tips!" quest. From there the route to the fences and walls quest runs like this:[3]

  1. "Building Tips!" quest is the chapter's opening quest.[3]
  2. "Decoration!" quest comes after it. It points out that modded Minecraft has far more decoration than just stairs.[3]
  3. "Decor Mods!" quest comes after Decoration!. It's the quest for mods the author picked for decorating your house or base.[3]
  4. "Macaw's Mods" quest comes after Decor Mods!. It introduces Macaw Sketch as the developer behind these mods, and asks whether you can craft it all.[3]
  5. "Macaw's Fences and Walls" quest comes after Macaw's Mods. This is the fences, gates and walls quest, and it is an item task.[3]

What sits next to it

Four other quests also unlock after Macaw's Mods, so you can do them in any order alongside the fences quest: "Macaw's Doors" quest, "Macaw's Roofs" quest, "Macaw's Trapdoors" quest and "Macaw's Paths and Pavings" quest.[3]

Where it leads

"Completed Macaw" quest is the wrap-up. It has a checkmark task, and the fences and walls quest is one of the eight quests it comes after. The others are Macaw's Doors, Macaw's Roofs, Macaw's Paths and Pavings, Macaw's Trapdoors, Macaw's Lights and Lamps, Macaw's Furniture and Macaw's Windows. The quest text says you got one of everything from Macaw's Mods, and jokes that you've earned your own Macaw.[3]

Of those eight, Lights and Lamps, Furniture and Windows sit elsewhere in the same chapter, branching off other quests. Lights and Lamps ("Macaw's Lights and Lamps" quest) comes after the light source quest, Furniture ("Macaw's Furniture" quest) comes after Decor Mods!, and Windows ("Macaw's Windows" quest) comes after the glass quest.[3]

Unverified The quest data doesn't say which specific item the fences and walls quest asks you to hand in.

What changed in Macaw's Fences and Walls between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Macaw's Fences and Walls 1.2.1. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier. Here are the mod releases that matter for the version you're playing, taken from the mod's own changelogs.[2]

1.2.0: new fences and gates

  • 14 new metal fences were added, and they can stack upwards to be taller.[6]
  • Curved double wooden gates were added. They work like doors and can be stacked upwards.[6]
  • 5 new double metal gates were added. They also work like doors and can be stacked upwards.[6]
  • The new stackable metal fences and gates got tooltips, and new custom block tags were added.[6]

1.2.0 also fixed several tag and recipe unlock problems. Fence gates were missing the item fence_gates tag. Wooden fences were missing both the item and the block wooden_fences tags. The bamboo recipe unlock advancement was missing. Cherry fences and gates had no recipe unlock advancement on 1.20 and later.[6]

1.2.1: Grass Topped Walls and lava

This is the version in your pack. It added the diagonalfences:non_diagonal_fences tag for Grass Topped Walls.[2][7]

  • Stone, andesite and other railing gates no longer burn from lava.[7]
  • Grass Topped Walls no longer miss their texture when attached to a fence gate or metal fence.[7]
  • Grass Topped Walls no longer look incorrect with diagonal fences.[7]

Both releases also updated translations. 1.2.1 added es_es, ja_jp, zh_cn, pt_br and zh_tw, and updated fr_fr, ko_kr and ru_ru. 1.2.0 added es_mx, fr_fr, ko_kr and tr_tr, and updated es_cl and ru_ru.[6][7]

Tip: Because the pack runs 1.2.1, you get everything from 1.2.0 too, including the stackable metal fences and double gates.[2][6]
