What is Macaw's Roofs?

1 part

Macaw's Roofs lets you build roofs with actual roof blocks instead of stacking stairs. It adds Roofs, Steep Roofs, Lower Roofs, Top Roofs, Awnings and Rain Gutters, and the project page says there is more on top of that.[1]

Striped Awnings and Rain Gutters both come in every color. Rain Gutters also fill up when it rains, which is a nice touch for a finished build.[1]

This pack ships version 2.3.2, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The mod has its own quest, "Macaw's Roofs" quest, in the "Building Tips" chapter, which has 67 quests in total. It comes straight after "Macaw's Mods" quest, a quest about Macaw Sketch, the developer known for decor mods.[3]

Going back up the chain, "Macaw's Mods" quest follows "Decor Mods!" quest, which follows "Decoration!" quest, which in turn follows the chapter's opening quest "Building Tips!" quest. So the roofs sit in the decoration branch of the chapter.[3]

The quest's own text is very short: it says the mod adds non-Minecraft blocks, and the author would rather not discuss it. Of the quests the book shows me, none list it as a requirement. The other 33 quests in the chapter are in the quest book itself, so check there for anything further along.[3]

Nothing in the quest sources I have ties this mod to the ATM Star path. Think of it as an optional building and decoration mod.[3]

How do you get started with Macaw's Roofs?

3 parts

Macaw's Roofs lets you build roofs out of actual roof blocks instead of stacking stairs. It adds roofs, steep roofs, lower roofs, top roofs, awnings and rain gutters. Here is a sensible order to start in.[1]

In the quest book, "Macaw's Roofs" quest sits in the Building Tips chapter. It comes after "Macaw's Mods" quest, the same as "Macaw's Doors" quest and "Macaw's Fences and Walls" quest. Its text is short and cheeky: it says the mod adds non-Minecraft blocks and the author would rather not discuss it. So the quest won't teach you anything, and this page has to do the job.[3]

Step one: make the Roofing Hammer

The pack changed the recipe for the Roofing Hammer, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. The block below shows the exact in-pack recipe.[4]

Step two: make your first roof blocks

There are a lot of roof recipes: 388 stonecutter recipes and 183 crafting table recipes that turn vanilla ingredients into roof blocks. Stone and terracotta style roofs, like Base Roof, are made at the stonecutter.[4]

Wooden roofs, like Acacia Roof, are made at the crafting table, and that recipe gives you 2 roofs per craft.[4]

The same material comes in several shapes. For acacia that includes Acacia Steep Base Roof, Acacia Top Roof, Acacia Lower Base Roof and Acacia Attic Roof, and the plank versions have their own set.[4][5]

Step three: add rain gutters

Rain gutters fill up when it is raining. The pack changed the recipe for the Base Rain Gutter, which is the first step.[1][4]

How does Macaw's Roofs work?

4 parts

Macaw's Roofs is a building mod, so there are no machines to set up. Its own description is that you can build roofs with actual roof blocks instead of stairs. The sources don't describe any power, multiblock or item automation for it, so this section covers how the blocks are made and the one moving part: rain gutters.[1]

Roof shapes

The mod adds roofs, steep roofs, lower roofs, awnings, top roofs and rain gutters. In the item names you'll see the shapes as Roof, Lower Base Roof, Steep Base Roof, Top Roof, Lower Top Roof, Steep Top Roof and Attic Roof, for example Andesite Roof, Andesite Steep Base Roof and Andesite Lower Top Roof. Striped awnings come in colours too.[1][4][5]

How roofs are made

There are two routes in this pack. Stone-type roofs like the andesite set are stonecutting recipes. Wood-type roofs like the acacia set are shaped crafting recipes that make several blocks per craft. Across the pack's recipe dump, 388 stonecutting recipes and 183 shaped crafting recipes turn vanilla materials into items from this mod.[4]

Here is a stonecutting example, the andesite roof:[4]

The acacia planks set shows how the crafted yields differ by shape. The plain roof and the top roof each give 2 per craft, while the lower base roof and the steep base roof each give 4. The attic roof gives 2.[4]

Rain gutters

Rain gutters are the one block here with behaviour of its own: they fill up when it is raining. Gutters come in each colour, just like the striped awnings.[1]

The pack changed the first step of this chain. The recipe for the Base Rain Gutter now takes iron nuggets (any nugget in the iron nuggets tag works), which is a pack change and not the mod default.[4]

From the Base Rain Gutter the chain branches into two items, the plain Rain Gutter and the Rain Gutter Downspout. The coloured versions come 8 per craft, for example Black Rain Gutter, Blue Rain Gutter and Light Blue Rain Gutter. The recipes are shown below.[4]

How do you progress through Macaw's Roofs?

3 parts

Macaw's Roofs has no power ladder in this pack. Progression here comes down to where the quest book places the mod and which material you build your roofs from.[3][4]

Where it sits in the quest book

The "Macaw's Roofs" quest quest lives in the Building Tips chapter. It comes after "Macaw's Mods" quest, which comes after "Decor Mods!" quest, which comes after "Decoration!" quest, which comes after "Building Tips!" quest. The quest's own text is short: it says the mod adds non-Minecraft blocks, so the author would rather not discuss it.[3]

Four other quests sit right beside it, all after the same Macaw's Mods quest: "Macaw's Doors" quest, "Macaw's Fences and Walls" quest, "Macaw's Trapdoors" quest and "Macaw's Paths and Pavings" quest. "Completed Macaw" quest is the checkmark that comes after Roofs and the other Macaw quests, including Lights and Lamps, Furniture and Windows. Its text says it is for having one of everything from Macaw's Mods.[3]

Roof material families

The roof blocks come in two crafting styles, and the material decides which one you use. Wood-type roofs, like the acacia, bamboo and bamboo mosaic sets, are crafted in the crafting grid. Stone-type roofs, like the andesite, terracotta and black concrete sets, are made at a stonecutter.[4]

For stone-type roofs, the recipes shown give one roof piece per craft. For example, andesite gives you Andesite Roof. The exception is Base Roof Slab, which gives 2 slabs per craft.[4]

For wood-type roofs, the number you get depends on the shape. These are the yields for the acacia log set:[4]

Crafting Shaped

Recipe id: mcwroofs:acacia_attic_roof

The attic shape has its own recipe and also gives 2 per craft.

The plank versions follow the same pattern, for example Acacia Planks Roof and Acacia Planks Steep Base Roof.[4]

The recipe dump counts 388 stonecutting recipes and 183 vanilla-material crafting recipes that make roof items. Only some of them are written out in full, so this page shows the pattern rather than every recipe.[4]

Tools and gutters

Two recipes in this mod are marked as changed by the pack: the Roofing Hammer and the Base Rain Gutter. The sources don't show the mod's default recipes, so I can't tell you what differs. These blocks show what you need in this pack.[4]

Dyeing is the last step. Each dye recipe makes 8 coloured gutters or downspouts per craft, for example Black Rain Gutter and Black Rain Gutter Downspout. The dump counts 32 recipes like this, all starting from the plain gutter or downspout.[4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Macaw's Roofs?

2 parts

Macaw's Roofs shows up in just one quest chapter, "Building Tips!" quest, the building-focused chapter with 67 quests. The mod has a single quest there, and it sits in the Macaw's branch of the decoration line.[3]

The path to the roofs quest

  1. Start with "Building Tips!" quest, the chapter opener with tips on building.[3]
  2. Next comes "Decoration!" quest, which comes right after the opener and is about decorating with the many mods that add decor.[3]
  3. After that is "Decor Mods!" quest, a pick of mods for decorating your house or base.[3]
  4. Then "Macaw's Mods" quest, which introduces the mods by the developer Macaw Sketch.[3]
  5. Finally "Macaw's Roofs" quest, the Macaw's Roofs quest itself.[3]

The roofs quest has a single item task. The quest text is short and jokey: it says the mod adds non-Minecraft blocks and the author would rather not discuss it.[3]

Unverified Which exact Macaw's Roofs item the quest asks you to hold is not confirmed in the available sources.

Its siblings and what comes after

The roofs quest sits next to four other quests that also unlock after the Macaw's Mods quest: "Macaw's Doors" quest, "Macaw's Fences and Walls" quest, "Macaw's Trapdoors" quest and "Macaw's Paths and Pavings" quest. You can do them in any order.[3]

The roofs quest also feeds into "Completed Macaw" quest, a checkmark quest that needs all of these Macaw quests done: Doors, Fences and Walls, Roofs, Paths and Pavings, Trapdoors, Lights and Lamps, Furniture and Windows. Its text says you got one of everything from Macaw's Mods, and that you've earned your own Macaw.[3]

Three of those other Macaw quests are in different branches of the chapter. "Macaw's Furniture" quest comes straight after the decor mods quest, "Macaw's Lights and Lamps" quest comes after the light sources quest a quest in "Building Tips", and "Macaw's Windows" quest comes after the glass quest a quest in "Building Tips". So to finish the set, you'll need to visit more than one part of the chapter.[3]

What changed in Macaw's Roofs between versions?

3 parts

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Macaw's Roofs 2.3.2, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod has been in the pack since version 1.0 or earlier. No pack changelog entries mention this mod, so the notes below come from the mod's own 2.3.2 changelog.[2]

What changed in 2.3.2

  • New gutter texture and new rain gutter models, and the rain gutters have more realistic water flowing.[6]
  • The bottom rain gutter can fill a cauldron with water, as long as the cauldron is exactly below the gutter.[6]
  • You can dye the striped awning by right clicking it with a dye. Rain gutters can be dyed the same way.[6]

Bug fixes

  • Roof behaviour fixes are listed for these lines: "Roofs are not Rain Proof", "Roofs do not count as sun protection (Vampirism)" and "Roofs let light through (Top Roofs still do)". The changelog gives no more detail than those lines.[6]
  • Fixed a cull face and render issue with lower top roofs.[6]
  • Fixed textures being inverted when a block is placed upside-down, and textures flipping on the sides of upside-down roofs.[6]
  • The roofing tool now works in multiplayer for certain blocks where it didn't before, and it no longer updates neighbouring blocks.[6]

Translations

This release updated the ru_ru and es_cl translations. It added tr_tr, fr_fr, es_mx and ja_jp.[6]
