What is FTB Quests?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 7.2 guide

FTB Quests is included in this pack as version 2101.1.27, using the NeoForge build of the mod. It has been part of the pack since pack version 2.25 or earlier, so it's been around for most of the pack's life.[1]

Unverified The available sources don't describe what FTB Quests does, who it's aimed at, or how it fits into this pack's progression, so those details are left out until they can be confirmed.

How do you get started with FTB Quests?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 7.2 guide

Getting set up with FTB Quests takes only a few cheap crafts, and every one uses basic early-game materials. The pack uses the mod's own recipes for all of these items, so what you see below is exactly what you'll craft in your world.[2]

Step 1: The Quest Book

Your first craft should be the Quest Book. It's a quick shapeless recipe you can make right after punching your first trees and grabbing some stone, so there's no reason to wait.[2]

Unverified The sources don't describe what the Quest Book does when used. It is commonly used to open the quests screen, but this pack's data doesn't confirm that.

Step 2: The Loot Crate Opener

Next up is the Loot Crate Opener. It's another cheap early craft, so you can grab it as soon as you have the materials.[2]

Unverified The sources don't explain how the Loot Crate Opener works or whether this pack hands out any loot crates.

Step 3: Task Screens (optional)

Task screens are a nice extra once you're settled in. Start with the Task Screen (1x1), because it's the base of the whole set. Every larger screen and the configurator are crafted from it.[2]

From there, work your way up in order: Task Screen (3x3), then Task Screen (5x5), then Task Screen (7x7). Each bigger size is built from the smaller ones, so you can't skip ahead.[2]

9 × Task Screen (1x1)

Recipe id: ftbquests:screen_3

To round out the set, craft the Task Screen Configurator. It also uses the smallest screen, so make an extra one if you plan to build it.[2]

Tip: If you're worried about missing quest completions, check your notification settings. The mod warns that the 'Action Bar' and 'None' completion styles may cause completion notices to be missed, and a separate option controls whether sounds play when a task, quest or chapter is completed.[3]

How does FTB Quests work?

6 parts

FTB Quests is mostly a questing system rather than a machine mod, so there are no multiblocks or power networks to build. The mechanics that matter are how items get submitted to quests, how quests unlock each other and how rewards are handed out. This section covers what the sources confirm.[4]

Getting into the quests

The Quest Book is your way into the quest window: right-click it to open the quests. Here is the pack's recipe for it.[4]

Task Screens and item submission

Task Screens are blocks that let you automate item submission. An item task can be set so items may only be submitted by piping into a Task Screen. That option only applies when the task has Consume Items turned on, so check the task's settings if you are not sure how it works.[4]

Task Screens come in four sizes: Task Screen (1x1), Task Screen (3x3), Task Screen (5x5) and Task Screen (7x7). These are the pack's recipes for all four.[4][5]

To bind a screen to a task, use the Task Screen Configurator. Sneak and right-click a Task Screen block with it.[4]

The mod also has a chest-style block. Its text says to place items there to complete quests, and that rewards will appear there.[4]

How item tasks match items

Item tasks have a component-matching setting with three modes. None ignores item component data. Fuzzy only checks the data components present in the filter stack. Strict requires the filter stack's data components to match the checked item exactly.[4]

Inventory checking has a configurable detection delay. It is the minimum interval, in ticks, between checks of a player's inventory when it changes. Higher values are kinder on server TPS, especially if inventories change often, but they delay the quest auto-completion messages.[4]

Progression and dependencies

The progression mode comes in two kinds. Linear means a quest must be complete before the quests that depend on it are started. Flexible lets you progress tasks in dependent quests at any time, but those quests can't be completed until their dependency is.[4]

  • Min Required Dependencies: anything above 0 turns the quest into an OR quest, where only that many dependencies are needed to unlock it.[4]
  • Max Completable Dependents: if above 0, only that many dependents can be completed, and the uncompleted ones become unavailable. This is useful for exclusive branches in a questline.[4]
  • Require Sequential Tasks: tasks must be completed in the strict order they were added to the quest. A quest can use the chapter's setting or override it.[4]
  • Tasks Ignore Dependencies: lets you start tasks without completing the quest's dependencies.[4]

Quests can also hide themselves. An invisible quest stays hidden until it is completed, or until a set number of its tasks are done. Other options hide the details until the quest can be started, or hide the description text until it is completed.[4]

Rewards

A team reward is one reward for the whole team, and only the player who submitted receives it. When it is off, all online players receive the reward. The Claim All button can be told to skip a reward, except for Loot, Random and Choice rewards, where that setting can't be changed.[4]

The item reward has an option that stops it giving the item if your inventory already holds it, and that check ignores NBT. Command rewards support vanilla substitutions such as @p, plus special ones for your position, the quest, the chapter and your team. Their permission level runs from 0 for player up to 4 for server owner.[4]

Reward blocking is a separate feature. The command '/ftbquests block_rewards' can block rewards for a team, and a quest can be set to offer its rewards anyway.[4]

Loot crates

Loot crates can be opened by sneak-right-clicking to open all the crates in your hand. The Loot Crate Opener is the pack's other tool for this.[4][5]

Unverified The pack has no config files for this mod, so the pack's actual values for settings such as progression mode, detection delay and the Task Screen-only option are not confirmed. Check them in the quest book's settings.

How do you progress through FTB Quests?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

The sources I have for FTB Quests in this pack show one real progression chain: the Task Screen sizes, from the smallest screen to the largest. Every other FTB Quests item here has its own single recipe.[6]

Quest Book and Loot Crate Opener

The Quest Book has its own crafting recipe in the pack.[6]

Task Screen sizes

Task Screens come in the sizes Task Screen (1x1), Task Screen (3x3), Task Screen (5x5) and Task Screen (7x7). Each larger size is crafted from the smaller screens, so you work up through them in order.[6]

The 5x5 screen uses both the 1x1 and 3x3 screens.

The 7x7 screen is the largest and uses the 1x1, 3x3 and 5x5 screens.

Configuring screens

The Task Screen Configurator is made from a 1x1 screen, so you can craft it once you have your first screen.[6]

Unverified The sources here do not show any quest in this pack that involves FTB Quests items or guides you through them, so there is no quest-by-quest path in this section. Check the pack's quest book for anything beyond the recipes above.
