What is Cooking for Blockheads?

3 parts

Cooking for Blockheads turns food crafting into a multi-block kitchen. The pack ships version 21.1.16, and the mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier. It's a good fit if you're tired of hunting through inventories for food recipes. The kitchen shows you every recipe you can make with the food in your inventory or stored in the kitchen.[1][2]

Where it fits in the progression

The mod's quests sit in the Food and Farming chapter. You start with "Making a Kitchen, with a Book" quest, which asks for Cooking for Blockheads I. From there you can pick up Cooking for Blockheads in "No Filter Cookbook" quest. Unlike the basic book, it shows how to make every food in the game, not just the ones you can already make.[2]

The other branch is "Cooking with the power of Diamonds" quest, which has you craft Cooking for Blockheads II. After that, "THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD" quest gives you the Cooking Table, the block that lets you see the recipes you can make. All the other kitchen quests unlock after the Cooking Table.[2]

The kitchen pieces

  • Sink supplies water to the kitchen and can also provide infinite water by pumping it out through cables or pipes.[2]
  • Kitchen Counter stores items for cooking, and you can place other kitchen pieces on it, such as a Cow in a Jar.[2]
  • Kitchen Cabinet works like the counter, but you can't place things on top of it.[2]
  • Oven enables smelting recipes in the kitchen.[2]
  • Ice Unit adds Ice and Snow recipes.[2]
  • Heating Unit lets you attach power to the Stove, according to its quest.[2]
  • Cow in a Jar produces milk over time and enables milk recipes. To get a cow inside, place the jar in a hole, lure a cow to fall in above it, then drop an anvil on the cow.[2]

The Sink beyond cooking

You'll want the Sink even if you never cook. "Infinite Water" quest in Tips and Tricks calls it an easy way to automate infinite water, and says it can be used as reactor coolant. The Mekanism: Reactors chapter hands it out in "Water Coolant" quest for the same reason: its infinite water can be piped out from practically any mod.[3][4]

The quest 7DAE8B2003F6A02F also accepts the Cutting Board as one of several cooking-related items.[2]

How do you get started with Cooking for Blockheads?

5 parts

Cooking for Blockheads turns food crafting into a multi-block kitchen. In this pack the quest line walks you through it in a clear order, so here's the path I'd follow.[2]

Step 1: Get your first cookbook

Your first item is Cooking for Blockheads I. You don't craft it on a table. You smelt a normal book in a furnace, which is exactly what "Making a Kitchen, with a Book" quest asks you to do. It shows you the food you can make right now.[2][5][6]

Smelting

Recipe id: cookingforblockheads:recipe_book

If you're tired of seeing only recipes you can already make, the pack also has Cooking for Blockheads. It shows how to make every food in the game and is made from the first book. You can smelt it back into the first book if you change your mind.[2][5][6]

Crafting Shapeless

Step 2: Upgrade the book

Next, upgrade to Cooking for Blockheads II. You make it from the first book plus a few extra items, and it lets you craft food with what you have available. The quest text says it gives a Diamond back, which I haven't confirmed in the recipe data.[2][5][6]

Step 3: Build the kitchen

The Cooking Table is the heart of the kitchen. It shows every recipe you can make with the food in your inventory or stored in the kitchen multi-block. The recipe needs the upgraded book, which is why that step comes first.[2][5][6]

After the table, the quests open up several add-ons. You can do them in any order. This is what each one is for:[2]

  • Sink gives the kitchen water. It can also pump out infinite water through cables or pipes.[2][6]
  • Oven enables smelting recipes in your kitchen.[2][6]
  • Kitchen Counter stores items for cooking. You can also put other kitchen blocks on top of it, like toasters and a Cow in a Jar.[2][6]
  • Kitchen Cabinet works like the counter but hangs in the air, and you can't put things on top of it. It can be placed on the wall above kitchen blocks.[2][6]
  • Ice Unit provides ice and snow recipes.[2][6]
  • Heating Unit lets you heat an oven using energy.[2][6]
  • Cow in a Jar slowly produces milk and enables milk recipes.[2][6]

Getting a cow in the jar

The quest explains how to fill the jar. Place the jar in a hole, lure a cow so it falls into the hole above the jar, then drop an anvil on it.[2]

Connecting the kitchen

The Kitchen Connector links kitchen blocks over corners. The kitchen floor links them over distances.[5][6]

Tip: The sink is worth making early. Other quest chapters use it as a source of infinite water, including for reactor coolant, and the quests say you can make another if you need more water.[2][3][4]

How does Cooking for Blockheads work?

4 parts

Cooking for Blockheads is a kitchen-themed block set. The mod's language file lists the Cooking Table, Kitchen Cabinet, Kitchen Counter, Fridge, Oven, Sink, Toaster, Spice Rack, Tool Rack, Cutting Board, Fruit Basket and Kitchen Connector, plus a Milk Jar and a Cow in a Jar. Many of them come in dye colours.[6]

There is no in-jar guidebook or documentation to draw on for this mod, so this section only covers what the pack's recipes and the mod's own text strings show.[5][6]

The recipe book chain

Everything starts with Cooking for Blockheads I (Cooking for Blockheads I). You don't craft it, you smelt a plain book to get it.[5]

Unverified How Kitchen Connectors link kitchen blocks together, and which storage the Cooking Table can use, isn't explained in the sources available here.

Colouring is done by crafting, using the mod's own tags. The black versions of the Kitchen Cabinet, the Kitchen Connector and the Cooking Table each have a dye recipe: Black Kitchen Cabinet, Black Kitchen Connector and Black Cooking Table.[5]

Automation, milk and toast options

The mod's language file describes several options. Oven automation is one: according to its description, when Disallow Oven Automation is set to true, pipes and similar blocks can't insert into or extract from the oven.[6]

The Cow in a Jar has its own options. When it is enabled, you can squish a cow into a Milk Jar by dropping an anvil on top. The jar then generates milk every tick, and the amount per tick is configurable. A separate multiplier applies to the Compressed Cow in a Jar, and the description calls it Ex Compressum compatibility.[6]

There are also options for food and the recipe book. Toasting toasted bread again turns it into charcoal, but only if no other mod adding toast is present. A list of recipe ids can also be excluded from the recipe book.[6]

Unverified No config files for this mod are available, so the pack's actual values for oven automation, milk per tick, the compressed jar multiplier and the other options above are not confirmed.

How do you progress through Cooking for Blockheads?

5 parts

Cooking for Blockheads progression in this pack is a straight line with a branch near the start, and the Food and Farming quest chapter walks you through it. You begin with a smelted book and end with a full multi-block kitchen.[2]

Tier 1: the first book

Quest "Making a Kitchen, with a Book" quest starts everything. You smelt a normal book in a furnace to get Cooking for Blockheads I. It's the entry ticket for the rest of the chain.[2][5]

Smelting

Recipe id: cookingforblockheads:recipe_book

Tier 2: pick a branch

From the first book, two quests open up. The first is "No Filter Cookbook" quest, which asks for Cooking for Blockheads. The quest says it lets you view how to make every food in the game, instead of only the recipes you can make right now. It's a shapeless craft from the first book.[2][5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: cookingforblockheads:no_filter_edition

The pack also has a smelting recipe that turns the No Filter edition back into Cooking for Blockheads I, so you can undo that choice.[5]

The second quest is "Cooking with the power of Diamonds" quest, which asks for Cooking for Blockheads II. This is the one that moves you toward the kitchen. It takes the first book, a crafting table and a diamond.[2][5]

Tier 3: the Cooking Table

"THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD" quest asks for Cooking Table, the heart of the multi-block kitchen. The quest says it shows every recipe available from the food in your inventory or stored in the kitchen multi-block. It's crafted from the second book.[2][5]

"A Cow in a Jar" quest is the odd one out. It asks for Cow in a Jar, which produces milk over time and enables milk recipes. The quest's method for getting a cow inside is to place the jar in a hole, lure a cow to fall in above it, then drop an anvil on the cow.[2]

Unverified The crafting recipe for the Cow in a Jar was not available in the sources for this section, so check it in the recipe viewer. This site does hold All the Mods 10: To the Sky's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Most kitchen blocks can be recoloured by combining a dye with the block. For the cabinet, cooking table, counter and sink, you can remove the dye again with bone meal.[5]

Tip: The Sink is useful well beyond cooking. The pack's Mekanism reactor quests recommend it for reactor water, and the Tips and Tricks chapter says that if you need more water, you can just make another Sink.[3][4]

How does Cooking for Blockheads work with other mods?

3 parts

Cooking for Blockheads connects to other mods in this pack in three places: dye-colored kitchen floors, a shared cooking-tool quest, and the Sink as a water source for Mekanism reactors.[2][3][5]

Colored kitchen floors

The pack adds recipes that turn the Kitchen Floor into dyed versions, such as Amber Kitchen Floor, Navy Kitchen Floor and Wine Kitchen Floor. The new floors come from the dyenamicsandfriends namespace, not from Cooking for Blockheads itself.[5]

Every one of these is a shaped crafting recipe added by the pack: one white Kitchen Floor plus a dye of the matching color tag. Other colors in the same pattern include aquamarine, bubblegum, lavender, mint, peach, rose and ultramarine. Here is the amber one as an example:[5]

Shared cooking tools with Farmer's Delight

In the Food and Farming chapter, a quest in "Food and Farming" accepts several different items as its task. They include the Cutting Board and the Cutting Board, as well as the Cooking Pot, Stove and Skillet. So you can finish it with the Cooking for Blockheads cutting board or with Farmer's Delight gear.[2]

The Sink as a water source

The Sink is the part of the mod that reaches furthest into the rest of the pack. Its kitchen quest, "The Sink = Infinite Water" quest, says it supplies water to the kitchen multi-block and can provide infinite water if you pump it out through cables or pipes.[2]

The Mekanism: Reactors chapter builds on this in "Water Coolant" quest. Reactors need more water, so the quest hands you the Sink and says it can be piped out from practically any mod. It also recommends using ID if available, because it can pull over 2 Billion mB of water each tick. The quest explains that it used Mekanism's Electric Pumps earlier because they are from Mekanism and still work in packs without Sinks.[3]

The Tips and Tricks chapter agrees in "Infinite Water" quest. It calls the Sink an easy way to automate infinite water, usable as reactor coolant, and suggests making another if you need more water.[4]

Tip: If your reactor or machines need more water, make another Sink instead of looking for a bigger one. That is exactly what the pack's quest suggests.[4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Cooking for Blockheads?

4 parts

Cooking for Blockheads shows up in three quest chapters. The main storyline is in Food and Farming, and the Sink also appears in two other chapters as a water source.[2][3][4]

Food and Farming

This chapter walks you through building the multi-block kitchen. It starts with the book, and the quest text jokes about smelting it in a Furnace. Once you have the Cooking Table, the rest of the kitchen branches out from it.[2]

  1. "Making a Kitchen, with a Book" quest asks you to obtain Cooking for Blockheads I. This is the starting point of the kitchen line.[2]
  2. "No Filter Cookbook" quest unlocks after the first quest and asks for Cooking for Blockheads. The quest text says it lets you view how to make every food in the game, not only the ones you can make right now.[2]
  3. "Cooking with the power of Diamonds" quest also unlocks after the first quest and asks for Cooking for Blockheads II, described as the next version of the book.[2]
  4. "THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD" quest follows the upgraded book and asks for Cooking Table. The quest text says it shows every recipe you can make with the food in your inventory or stored in the kitchen multi-block.[2]

Kitchen add-ons

After the Cooking Table quest, seven quests open up. They all unlock from that same quest, so you can do them in any order.[2]

A side quest with a shared task

a quest in "Food and Farming" has no title and no listed prerequisite. It accepts any one of several items, and one of them is Cutting Board. The others come from Farmer's Delight: its cooking pot, stove, cutting board and skillet.[2]

Sink quests in other chapters

The Sink is also used outside the kitchen line. In Mekanism: Reactors, "Water Coolant" quest comes after Fission Reactor Port and asks for Sink as a water supply for your reactors. The quest text says it has infinite water and can be piped out from practically any mod.[3]

In Tips and Tricks, "Infinite Water" quest asks for the same item. It has no prerequisite listed, and it's described as an easy way to automate infinite water, with the tip that you can simply make another Sink if you need more.[4]
