Cooking for Blockheads is a mod in All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.1.0, where it is version 21.1.24. Adds a multiblock kitchen that shows recipes you can make with what ingredients you have available. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Cooking for Blockheads?

3 parts

Cooking for Blockheads turns food into a proper kitchen project. You build a multi-block kitchen, and its Cooking Table shows every recipe you can make with the food in your inventory and in the kitchen's storage. This pack ships version 21.1.24 of the mod.[1][2]

Where it fits in the pack

The mod has its own questline in the Food and Farming chapter, and it starts with Cooking for Blockheads I in the quest "Making a Kitchen, with a Book" quest. Two quests unlock from there. "No Filter Cookbook" quest gives you Cooking for Blockheads, which shows how to make every food in the game instead of only the ones you can make right now. "Cooking with the power of Diamonds" quest asks for Cooking for Blockheads II, the next version of the book.[2]

After the second book, the quest "THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD" quest asks for the Cooking Table, the heart of the kitchen. Every other kitchen block unlocks from that quest.[2]

Kitchen blocks the quests cover

  • Sink: supplies water to the kitchen, and can also give infinite water when you pump it out with cables or pipes.[2]
  • Ice Unit: provides Ice and Snow recipes.[2]
  • Heating Unit: lets you attach power to the Stove.[2]
  • Oven: enables smelting recipes in your kitchen multi-block.[2]
  • Kitchen Counter: stores items for cooking, and you can place other kitchen items on it, such as a Cow in a Jar.[2]
  • Kitchen Cabinet: works like the counter but hangs in the air, so nothing can be placed on top of it.[2]
  • Cow in a Jar: produces milk over time and enables milk recipes for the kitchen.[2]

Not just for cooks

Even if you don't care about food, you will probably meet the Sink anyway. The Mekanism: Reactors chapter hands it to you in "Water Coolant" quest as a water source for fission reactors, and the Tips and Tricks chapter lists it in "Infinite Water" quest as an easy way to automate infinite water.[3][4]

Tip: Need more water? The Tips and Tricks quest says to simply make another Sink.[4]

How do you get started with Cooking for Blockheads?

5 parts

Cooking for Blockheads turns your base into a multi-block kitchen that shows every recipe you can make from the food you own. In this pack the Food and Farming quest chapter walks you through it, and the order below follows those quests. Good news: you can start with a plain Book and a furnace.[2]

Smelt a Book into your first cookbook

The first quest is literally to put a Book in a Furnace and smelt it. You get Cooking for Blockheads I, which shows the food you can make right now. Every later step builds on it, so do this first.[2][5][6]

Smelting

Recipe id: cookingforblockheads:recipe_book

Tip: If you would rather see every food recipe, including ones you can't make yet, the quest chain offers Cooking for Blockheads. It is crafted from the first book, and smelting it gives the first book back, so you can swap between them.[2][5][6]

Crafting Shapeless

Upgrade to the second book

Next, craft Cooking for Blockheads II, the next version of the book. Its in-game description says "Craft food with what you have available", and the Cooking Table recipe needs it.[2][5][6]

Build the kitchen around a Cooking Table

The Cooking Table is the heart of the multi-block kitchen. It shows every recipe available from your inventory and from food stored in the kitchen. The quests for the sink, counter, cabinet, oven, Cow in a Jar and the ice and heating upgrade units all come after it.[2][6]

Add the core kitchen blocks

The Sink supplies water to the kitchen. It gives infinite water, and you can pump that out through cables or pipes. Other quest chapters in the pack also use it as a water source for reactor coolant.[2][3][4]

The Kitchen Counter stores items for cooking, and you can place other kitchen items on top of it, like a Cow in a Jar. The Kitchen Cabinet works like a counter but goes on the wall above kitchen blocks, so nothing can sit on top of it.[2][6]

How does Cooking for Blockheads work?

5 parts

Cooking for Blockheads is a kitchen-building mod. Instead of one machine, you get a whole set of kitchen blocks. The sources I have for this pack cover what those blocks are, which ones open a screen, and how the pack handles their crafting. They do not explain how the blocks link up with each other, so I will stick to what is confirmed.[5][6]

The kitchen blocks

The mod's block list includes the Kitchen Cabinet, Kitchen Counter, Fridge, Oven, Sink, Kitchen Connector, Cooking Table, Cutting Board, Fruit Basket, Spice Rack, Toaster, Tool Rack, Milk Jar and Cow in a Jar. Kitchen Floor is also in the set, as a decorative block.[6]

Several of these open their own screen. The mod's screen text has containers for the Kitchen Cabinet, Cooking Table, Kitchen Counter, Cutting Board, Fridge, Fruit Basket, Spice Rack, Cow in a Jar and the Cooking Oven. If you want to put something in one, or craft with it, you right-click it like a chest.[6]

If you use Jade, it has dedicated displays for the Fridge, Milk Jar, Oven, Preservation Chamber, Sink and Toaster.[6]

Getting set up

The mod's own recipe books come first. Cooking for Blockheads I is made by smelting, Cooking for Blockheads II is the upgrade from it, and the Cooking Table needs the second book. There is also a no-filter edition made from the first book, and smelting that edition gives the first book back.[5]

Storage and cooking blocks

The Kitchen Cabinet, Kitchen Counter and Fridge are the storage-style blocks. In this pack they all have ordinary crafting recipes, and the Fridge is a shapeless craft.[5][6]

Dyeing and floors

Cabinets, connectors, counters, fridges, ovens, sinks, cooking tables and floors all come in many dye colors. Dyeing a cabinet, connector or cooking table is a shapeless craft that takes a dye and any block from the matching group. The black cabinet recipe below is one example.[5][6]

Crafting Shapeless

  • any black dye

There are separate recipes that strip the dye off a cabinet or connector and give you the plain block back.[5]

The pack changed the recipe for Kitchen Floor. It now uses storage blocks of coal and quartz and makes 12 floors per craft. This is the pack's recipe, not the mod default. Dyed floors are made from the plain Kitchen Floor, and each craft gives 8 of the colored floor, for example Black Kitchen Floor.[5]

Toaster and jars

The mod's option description says that toasting already toasted bread turns it into charcoal, but only when no other mod adds toast, and that setting it to false turns this off. The same language file mentions a Compressed Cow in a Jar and a milk-per-tick multiplier for it, which is a compatibility option for Ex Compressum.[6]

Unverified The sources here do not show this pack's config values for Cooking for Blockheads, so whether very toasted bread is enabled and what the compressed cow jar multiplier is are not confirmed. They would be set in the mod's config file, and the sources here do not include it. How the Connector links blocks into one kitchen, and what the Oven, Sink and Toaster need to run, are also not shown in these sources.

How do you progress through Cooking for Blockheads?

5 parts

Cooking for Blockheads progression in this pack is a short, linear chain in the Food and Farming quest chapter. You start with a smelted book, upgrade it with a diamond, and then build a multi-block kitchen around a cooking table. Here's how each step works.[2]

Stage 1: The first book

The chain starts with "Making a Kitchen, with a Book" quest. You get Cooking for Blockheads I by smelting a regular book in a furnace.[2][5]

Smelting

Recipe id: cookingforblockheads:recipe_book

"No Filter Cookbook" quest is a side branch that unlocks right after. It asks for Cooking for Blockheads, which shows how to make every food in the game instead of only the recipes you can currently make. It's crafted from the first book.[2][5]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: cookingforblockheads:no_filter_edition

You can also smelt the no-filter book back into the first book if you want to switch.[5]

Stage 2: The diamond upgrade

"Cooking with the power of Diamonds" quest asks you to craft Cooking for Blockheads II, the second version of the book. It upgrades the first book using a crafting table and a diamond. This is the book you need for the next stage.[2][5]

Extras and side notes

The sink also shows up outside this chapter. A Mekanism reactor quest hands it out as a water source for reactor coolant, and the Tips and Tricks chapter calls it an easy way to automate infinite water: if you need more, make another.[3][4]

There is also an untitled quest in the Food and Farming chapter. It accepts a Cutting Board among several other cooking items from another mod. It isn't tied to the book chain.[2]

For decoration, you can dye the kitchen blocks. The pack has dye recipes for cabinets, connectors, cooking tables, counters, fridges, ovens and sinks. Combining a dyed cabinet, cooking table, counter or sink with bone meal gives you the plain version back. The Kitchen Connector is not part of the quest path, but it has its own recipe.[5]

How does Cooking for Blockheads work with other mods?

3 parts

Cooking for Blockheads is mostly a self-contained kitchen mod, but the pack ties it into a few others. The links below come from in-pack recipes and quests, so they show how this pack actually uses the mod.[2][3][4][5]

Dyed kitchen floors

The pack adds recipes that turn the Kitchen Floor into coloured variants. The variants live in the dyenamicsandfriends namespace, and each colour has its own shaped crafting recipe that uses a matching dye from the c:dyes tags. These recipes are added by the pack.[5]

Here are two examples. The other colours follow the same pattern, including Aquamarine, Bubblegum, Cherenkov, Lavender, Mint, Navy and Wine.[5]

Farmer's Delight

In the Food and Farming questline, the quest a quest in "Food and Farming" accepts any one of several kitchen items. Those are the Cooking Pot, Stove, Cutting Board, Skillet and the Cutting Board. So the Cooking for Blockheads cutting board counts the same as the Farmer's Delight one for this quest.[2]

The Sink and infinite water

The Sink is the part of this mod that other mods use most. Its quest "The Sink = Infinite Water" quest says it provides water to the kitchen multi-block, and that it can also give infinite water when you pump the water out through cables or pipes.[2]

The Mekanism: Reactors chapter builds on this in the quest "Water Coolant" quest. It points you to the Sink when your reactors need more water, and says the water can be piped out from practically any mod. The quest also recommends ID if available, because it can pull over 2 Billion mB of water each tick.[3]

The Tips and Tricks chapter agrees in "Infinite Water" quest. It describes the Sink as an easy way to automate infinite water, usable as reactor coolant. If you need more water, you just make another Sink.[4]

Tip: Need more water for a reactor? The Tips and Tricks quest for the Sink says to make another one.[4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Cooking for Blockheads?

2 parts

Most of the Cooking for Blockheads content sits in one chain in the Food and Farming chapter. The Sink also turns up in two other chapters as an infinite water source. Here is the chain in the order the quests unlock.[2][3][4]

Food and Farming chapter

  1. "Making a Kitchen, with a Book" quest is the starting point. You hand in Cooking for Blockheads I, and the quest text jokes that you should put a book in a Furnace and smelt it.[2]
  2. "No Filter Cookbook" quest comes after the first quest. It asks for Cooking for Blockheads, which lets you view how to make every food in the game, not only the recipes you can already make.[2]
  3. "Cooking with the power of Diamonds" quest also follows the first quest. You craft Cooking for Blockheads II, the next version of the book, and the quest text promises a Diamond back.[2]
  4. "THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD" quest follows the Diamonds quest and asks for the Cooking Table. The quest describes it as part of a multi-block kitchen that shows every recipe you can make from your inventory and the kitchen's stored food.[2]

Once the Cooking Table quest is done, seven quests open up. Each one asks you to obtain one kitchen block:[2]

There is also a quest in "Food and Farming", an untitled quest in the same chapter. It accepts any one of several items, including Farmer's Delight cooking items and the Cutting Board. No prerequisite is listed for it.[2]

The Sink in other chapters

"Water Coolant" quest in the Mekanism: Reactors chapter asks for the Sink again, after the Fission Reactor Port quest. The quest says reactors need more water, and that the Sink has infinite water and can be piped out from practically any mod.[3]

"Infinite Water" quest in the Tips and Tricks chapter is the same idea. It calls the Sink an easy way to automate infinite water, and suggests making another if you need more.[4]

Tip: If you plan to build reactors, craft the Sink early. Both the reactor chapter and the Tips and Tricks chapter point you to it as a coolant water source.[3][4]
