What is Controlling?

1 part

Controlling adds a search bar to the Key-Bindings menu. You can type part of a key binding's name and find it quickly, which helps a lot in a big pack with lots of keybinds.[1]

It also adds a button that shows only the key bindings that conflict with each other, so fixing clashes is much easier. On top of that, you can see which keys are still free to bind.[1]

This pack ships Controlling 19.0.5, the NeoForge 1.21.1 build. It has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

Among the quests I can see, none is about this mod. The "Create" chapter has 91 quests, but only some of its text was available to me, so the rest is in the quest book itself.[3]

Tip: Don't mix it up with the quest "Controlling your Train" quest. Despite the name, it is a Create quest about driving a train with the Train Controls, and it comes after Constructing Trains. It has nothing to do with the keybind menu.[3]

How do you get started with Controlling?

1 part

Good news: there is nothing to craft here. Controlling is a quality-of-life mod that changes the Key-Bindings menu, so you can start using it as soon as you open that menu in the pack.[1]

The mod page describes these features:[1]

  • A search bar that lets you find a key binding by its name.[1]
  • A button that shows only the key bindings that conflict with each other, which makes them easier to fix.[1]
  • A way to see which keys are still available to be bound.[1]

A good first step

Before you start building, open the Key-Bindings menu and use the button that shows only conflicting key bindings, so you can fix them early. Then use the search bar to find any binding by name, and check which keys are available before you rebind something.[1]

The mod page doesn't list any pack-specific changes, so what the mod does here is what the project page describes.[1]

How does Controlling work?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Controlling is a Key-Bindings menu tool. The project page describes it as a mod that adds a search bar to that menu. The sources describe no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item handling for it, so there is no tech or automation to set up here.[1]

What the mod does

Here is what the project page says Controlling adds to the Key-Bindings menu.[1]

  • Search by name: you can search for keybinds using their name in the Key-Bindings menu, which makes a key binding easy to find.[1]
  • Conflict filter: a button that shows only the keybinds that conflict with each other, which makes them easier to fix.[1]
  • Free key view: you can see which keys are available to be bound.[1]
Tip: If you have keybind clashes after adding mods, try the conflict button first. It shows only the keybinds that conflict with each other, so you can fix them without going through the whole menu.[1]

Using it

The sources only describe features inside the Key-Bindings menu, so that is where you use this mod.[1]

How do you progress through Controlling?

There is no tier path to follow for this mod. The quest material I have for this section is the Create chapter of the pack's quest book, which has 91 quests, and none of the quests shown there mention this mod.[3]

That means I can't point you to a quest, a chapter position or an in-pack recipe for it, so I'm not inventing any. If you want a guided progression, the Create chapter is a good place to start, since its quests run from Andesite Alloys up through casings and machines. That chapter is about Create, not this mod.[3]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Controlling?

I can't point you to a quest chapter for this mod. In the quest text I was given, no quest asks you to craft, find or use anything from it. The Create chapter (91 quests) only asks for Create items and a few vanilla ones, and the Ars Nouveau quests I can see are about spellbooks, glyphs and Source.[3][4]

One quest can look related by name only: "Controlling your Train" quest. It asks for Train Controls, the Train Controls block from Create, and teaches you to drive a train with W, S and Space. It has nothing to do with key binding.[3]

The Ars Nouveau chapter has 254 quests, and the text of 236 of them wasn't included for lack of room. If you want to be sure that chapter never mentions this mod, check it in the quest book yourself.[4]

What changed in Controlling between versions?

1 part

Controlling has been in the pack since All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0 or earlier, and All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Controlling 19.0.5 (the NeoForge 1.21.1 build).[2]

Controlling 19.0.5

The only change in the mod changelog I have for this version is a fix for double modifier keybinds, which closes issue #214 on the mod's tracker. If you bind a key combined with a modifier and it behaved oddly, this is the fix.[5]

Unverified Changelogs for earlier Controlling versions, and any pack-level changelog notes about this mod, were not available, so changes before 19.0.5 are not covered here.

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as controlling, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
