What is Controlling?

1 part

Controlling is a small quality-of-life mod for the Key-Bindings menu. It adds a search bar, so you can type part of a key binding's name and find it straight away instead of scrolling through the whole list.[1]

It also adds a button that shows only the key bindings that conflict with each other, which makes fixing clashes much easier. You can also see which keys are still free to bind.[1]

This pack ships Controlling 19.0.5, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since 0.3.0-beta or earlier.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The quest sources I have don't give Controlling a quest of its own. The closest match by name is "Controlling your Train" quest in the "Create" chapter, but that is about driving a train with Train Controls, not about this mod. It comes after the "Constructing Trains" quest.[3]

The "Create" chapter is in the "Tech" group, chapter 45 of 70 in the book, and has 90 quests. 67 of them aren't included in my sources, so for those you'll need to check the quest book itself.[3]

How do you get started with Controlling?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Good news: there is nothing to craft here. Controlling is a quality-of-life mod that changes the Key-Bindings menu, so you can start using it as soon as you open that menu in the pack.[1]

The mod page describes these features:[1]

  • A search bar that lets you find a key binding by its name.[1]
  • A button that shows only the key bindings that conflict with each other, which makes them easier to fix.[1]
  • A way to see which keys are still available to be bound.[1]

A good first step

Before you start building, open the Key-Bindings menu and use the button that shows only conflicting key bindings, so you can fix them early. Then use the search bar to find any binding by name, and check which keys are available before you rebind something.[1]

The mod page doesn't list any pack-specific changes, so what the mod does here is what the project page describes.[1]

How does Controlling work?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Controlling is a Key-Bindings menu tool. The project page describes it as a mod that adds a search bar to that menu. The sources describe no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item handling for it, so there is no tech or automation to set up here.[1]

What the mod does

Here is what the project page says Controlling adds to the Key-Bindings menu.[1]

  • Search by name: you can search for keybinds using their name in the Key-Bindings menu, which makes a key binding easy to find.[1]
  • Conflict filter: a button that shows only the keybinds that conflict with each other, which makes them easier to fix.[1]
  • Free key view: you can see which keys are available to be bound.[1]
Tip: If you have keybind clashes after adding mods, try the conflict button first. It shows only the keybinds that conflict with each other, so you can fix them without going through the whole menu.[1]

Using it

The sources only describe features inside the Key-Bindings menu, so that is where you use this mod.[1]

How do you progress through Controlling?

Controlling has no tiers or progression path that you can follow in this pack. The one thing worth flagging is a name clash in the quest book: the "Create" chapter in the Tech group has a quest called "Controlling your Train" quest. Despite the name, it is about driving a Create train with Train Controls. It has nothing to do with this mod.[3]

That quest comes after "Constructing Trains" quest. It tells you to right click the Train Controls, hold W to go forward and S to go backwards, and hold Space to stop at a Train Station. Those are Create train mechanics, so don't treat them as Controlling features.[3]

Unverified The sources here show no recipes that produce Controlling's items, so there are no crafting tiers to lay out for this mod.

Which All the Mons quests use Controlling?

None of the quests I can see in this pack ask for an item from this mod. The quests I was given are in the Create chapter (Tech group) and the shown part of the Ars Nouveau chapter (Magic group), and none of their tasks use an item from the controlling namespace.[3][4]

One title can be confusing: "Controlling your Train" quest is about driving a Create train. It asks for Train Controls, the Train Controls block, and has nothing to do with this mod. It comes after "Constructing Trains" quest in the Create chapter.[3]

The Ars Nouveau chapter has 129 quests, and 101 of them are not shown to me. Their text is in the quest book, so check it there if you want to be sure.[4]

What changed in Controlling between versions?

1 part

Controlling has been part of All the Mons since 0.3.0-beta or earlier, so it has been there from the early days of the pack. All the Mons 1.3.0 ships Controlling 19.0.5 (the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1).[2]

Controlling 19.0.5

  • Fixed double modifier keybinds (issue #214). This is the only change listed in the 19.0.5 changelog.[5]

If you bind keys with modifiers such as Ctrl, Shift or Alt, this is the fix that matters to you. It is the version you get in All the Mons 1.3.0.[2][5]

Unverified The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so there is no confirmed record of Controlling changes between individual All the Mons releases.

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as controlling, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
