What is Controlling?

2 parts

Controlling is a small quality-of-life mod that adds a search bar to the Key-Bindings menu. With a modpack this big, you end up with a long list of keybinds, and this lets you type a name to find the one you want instead of scrolling.[1]

What it adds

  • A search bar in the Key-Bindings menu, so you can look up a keybind by its name.[1]
  • A button that shows only the keybinds that conflict with each other, which makes conflicts much easier to fix.[1]
  • A way to see which keys are still available to be bound.[1]

In this pack

The pack includes Controlling version 9.0+23, and it has been part of the pack since version 1.1 or earlier.[2]

The sources here do not show this mod in the pack's quest book, so I won't place it in a chapter or group. Treat it as a menu tool that works as soon as you open the Key-Bindings screen.[1][2]

How do you get started with Controlling?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Good news: there is nothing to craft here. Controlling is a quality-of-life mod that changes the Key-Bindings menu, so you can start using it as soon as you open that menu in the pack.[1]

The mod page describes these features:[1]

  • A search bar that lets you find a key binding by its name.[1]
  • A button that shows only the key bindings that conflict with each other, which makes them easier to fix.[1]
  • A way to see which keys are still available to be bound.[1]

A good first step

Before you start building, open the Key-Bindings menu and use the button that shows only conflicting key bindings, so you can fix them early. Then use the search bar to find any binding by name, and check which keys are available before you rebind something.[1]

The mod page doesn't list any pack-specific changes, so what the mod does here is what the project page describes.[1]

How does Controlling work?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Controlling is a Key-Bindings menu tool. The project page describes it as a mod that adds a search bar to that menu. The sources describe no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item handling for it, so there is no tech or automation to set up here.[1]

What the mod does

Here is what the project page says Controlling adds to the Key-Bindings menu.[1]

  • Search by name: you can search for keybinds using their name in the Key-Bindings menu, which makes a key binding easy to find.[1]
  • Conflict filter: a button that shows only the keybinds that conflict with each other, which makes them easier to fix.[1]
  • Free key view: you can see which keys are available to be bound.[1]
Tip: If you have keybind clashes after adding mods, try the conflict button first. It shows only the keybinds that conflict with each other, so you can fix them without going through the whole menu.[1]

Using it

The sources only describe features inside the Key-Bindings menu, so that is where you use this mod.[1]

What changed in Controlling between versions?

3 parts

All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 ships Controlling 9.0+23, the Forge 1.18.2 build. It has been in the pack since Gravitas 1.1 or earlier. Here is what the mod's own changelogs say about how it got to this version.[2]

Ports and technical changes

  • Dec 4, 2021: a fix to mixins and removal of the Fabric API dependency, plus an icon and a side info fix.[3]
  • Dec 23, 2021: ported to 1.18.1. A follow-up on Dec 25 fixed maven publishing, mixins and 1.18.1.[3]
  • Jan 22, 2022: the build moved to Kotlin DSL and CurseForgeGradle.[3]
  • Feb 15, 2022: removed a trailing line break from a text string (issue 115).[3]
  • Mar 2, 2022: ported to 1.18.2, the Minecraft version this pack's build targets.[2][3]
  • Apr 18, 2022: a code cleanup, and the mod's mixins were given a prefix.[3]

Translations

Most of the later changelog entries are community language work. Files were added for Korean (ko_kr), Kazakh (kk_kz), Finnish (fi_fi), Traditional Chinese for Hong Kong (zh_hk) and Literary Chinese (lzh). Existing translations were updated, including Traditional Chinese (zh_tw), Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Polish and Simplified Chinese (zh_cn).[3]

9.0+22 to 9.0+23

The only entry in 9.0+23 that is not in 9.0+22 is an update to zh_cn.json dated May 28, 2023. The rest of the list is the same, so the move from 9.0+22 to 9.0+23 was a translation update only.[3][4]

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as controlling, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
