What is Dark Mode Everywhere?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

Dark Mode Everywhere gives you dark GUIs across the game. It uses the built-in 1.18 Minecraft shaders to turn GUI textures into a dark version, so it works in any GUI, not just vanilla screens. It also tries to adjust text colors so nothing becomes hard to read in dark mode.[1]

It's a quality-of-life mod, so it's for anyone who spends long sessions in inventories, machine screens and menus and wants something easier on the eyes. It's MIT licensed.[1]

Switching modes

The mod currently ships with 3 dark modes. You change between them with the button at the bottom left of the screen.[1]

If you like tinkering, you can add new GUI shaders by editing the "darkmodeeverywhereshaders.json" file. You do that through a resource loader mod or a resource pack.[1]

Fixing visual glitches

The mod has a shader blacklist. It's a list of class and method names, or any part of them, that stop the dark shader from being applied. The mod's own default list covers things like the crosshair, hotbar, hunger bar, experience bar, sky and title screen. There's also a dump option, off by default in the mod, that logs every 5 seconds which classes and methods were drawing something while the dark shader tried to apply. It helps you find the name to add if one element looks wrong.[1]

In this pack

This version of the pack includes Dark Mode Everywhere 1.21-1.3.4. The mod was already in the pack by version 0.32 or earlier.[2]

Unverified The sources show no quests, crafting or progression role for this mod, including on the ATM Star path. It is not on that path, so you can use it whenever you like.

How do you get started with Dark Mode Everywhere?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: Dark Mode Everywhere doesn't need a crafting chain. There's nothing to build first, so this section is about switching it on and tuning it to your taste.[1]

The mod uses the built-in 1.18 Minecraft shaders to turn GUI textures into a dark mode. Because it works through shaders, it can apply to pretty much any GUI in the game. It also tries to change text colors so they stay readable on the darker background.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Open a GUI and look for the button on the bottom left. The mod currently uses it to change between its dark modes.[1]
  2. Click that button to switch between the 3 dark modes the mod currently provides, and stop on the one that's easiest on your eyes.[1]
  3. If something looks off or the text is hard to read, report it. The mod author asks players to report visual issues so they can be fixed.[1]

Fixing things that shouldn't be dark

If the dark shader is hitting something you'd rather leave alone, the mod has a blacklist option called METHOD_SHADER_BLACKLIST. Each entry is a class and method name, or just part of one, that stops the dark shader from being used there. For example, using just renderHunger would keep the hunger bar from getting the dark shader.[1]

The mod's documented default blacklist already covers things like the crosshair, the title screen, the sky, the hotbar, food and the experience bar. It also includes one JEI fluid tank rendering method.[1]

Tip: Not sure what to put in the blacklist? Turn on METHOD_SHADER_DUMP. Every 5 seconds it dumps which classes and methods were used to render something on screen while the dark shader was trying to apply. Copy the part you want to exclude into the blacklist, then switch the dump back off. It's off by default.[1]

Going further

If you want to add new GUI shaders, the mod lets you do it by editing darkmodeeverywhereshaders.json and loading your version through a resource pack or a resource loader mod.[1]

How does Dark Mode Everywhere work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

This one is different from the usual machine-and-pipes mod. Dark Mode Everywhere is a client-side visual mod, so it has no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation. The sources don't describe any of those systems, and nothing here is crafted, so I won't make anything up. What follows is how its shader system works and how the pack configures it.[1]

How the dark mode works

The mod uses Minecraft's built-in 1.18 shaders to turn any GUI texture into a dark version. Because it works at shader level, it applies to any GUI in the game, and it also tries to change text colors so they stay readable in dark mode.[1]

There are 3 dark modes, and you switch between them with a button at the bottom left of the screen. If you want more, the project page says you can add new GUI shaders by editing darkmodeeverywhereshaders.json and loading it through a resource loader mod or a resource pack.[1]

Button placement in this pack

The pack sets the inventory button to 50 pixels from the left of the GUI ([[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Inventory Button.X]]) and 7 pixels from the bottom ([[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Inventory Button.Y]]). Both options only accept values above 0.[3]

The main menu button has its own position settings, 4 pixels from the left ([[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.MAIN_X]]) and 40 pixels from the bottom ([[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.MAIN_Y]]). However, [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.SHOW]] is false in this pack, so that button isn't shown on the main menu.[3]

The shader blacklist

Some HUD and overlay elements look wrong when the dark shader is applied, so the mod has a blacklist: METHOD_SHADER_BLACKLIST. Each entry is a class and method string, and any matching part of it blocks the shader for that render method. For example, renderHunger is enough to block the ForgeGui renderFood method.[1][3]

The pack's list is longer than the example on the project page. Both include entries for the crosshair, sky, hotbar, food bar, experience bar and the Forge overlay class. The pack adds many more, including entries for classes from other mods' overlays, such as AppleSkin, Jade, Iron's Spells and Ars Nouveau. The project page example also lists the vanilla TitleScreen class, which is not written out in the pack's list.[1][3]

Finding what to blacklist

If something in the pack still looks off, METHOD_SHADER_DUMP can help. It is false in this pack. When you turn it on, the mod dumps every 5 seconds a list of class:method strings for the GUIs the dark shader was applied to. You can copy one, or just part of it, into the blacklist to stop the shader on that element.[1][3]

Tip: Turn the dump on only while you're hunting for a render method to blacklist, then turn it off again.[3]

Which Dark Mode Everywhere config options matter?

4 parts

This pack changes the inventory button position from the mod defaults. The options below all live in the client config file, config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml.[4]

Inventory button position

The mod's project page says you switch between its 3 dark modes with a button at the bottom left. This pack moves that button by swapping the two position values. [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Inventory Button.X]] is 2 here (mod default 32), and it counts pixels from the left of the GUI. [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Inventory Button.Y]] is 32 here (mod default 2), and it counts pixels from the bottom of the GUI.[1][4]

[[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Inventory Button.SHOW]] is true, so the inventory button is enabled. If it overlaps another mod's button, change X and Y. Both values must be greater than 0.[4]

Main menu button

[[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.SHOW]] is false in this pack, so there is no dark mode button on the main menu. The position values are [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.MAIN_X]] = 4 and [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.MAIN_Y]] = 40, which match the mod defaults. They only matter if you turn the button on.[4]

Shader blacklist

METHOD_SHADER_BLACKLIST lists render methods that the dark shader skips. The pack's list is much longer than the short example on the mod's project page. It covers the crosshair, sky, hotbar, food and experience bar, plus overlays from other mods in the pack such as JEI's fluid tank, AppleSkin, Colorful Hearts, Overloaded Armor Bar, Jade and Ars Nouveau. The point is to keep those elements from being darkened.[1][4]

Each entry is a class and method string. A substring is enough: according to the config comment, 'renderHunger' blocks 'net.minecraftforge.client.gui.overlay.ForgeGui:renderFood'. If a HUD element or GUI looks wrong in dark mode, add a string for it to this list.[4]

Finding what to blacklist

Set METHOD_SHADER_DUMP to true to find the right string. It is false in this pack. When enabled, the mod dumps every 5 seconds which render methods the dark shader was applied to, as class:method strings. Copy the one for the offending GUI into the blacklist, then turn the dump off again.[1][4]

What changed in Dark Mode Everywhere between versions?

All the Mons 1.3.0 ships Dark Mode Everywhere 1.21.1-1.4.0 (the NeoForge jar for Minecraft 1.21.1). The mod has been in the pack since All the Mons 0.3.0-beta or earlier, so it's one of the long-standing members of the mod list.[5]

The mod's changelogs for 1.21.1-1.4.0 and for the earlier 1.21-1.3.5 release only point to the project's commit history. They don't list any individual changes, so I can't tell you what is different between those versions.[6][7]

Unverified The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so which pack release updated it to 1.4.0, and what that update changed, is unverified.

METHOD_SHADER_BLACKLIST
A list of class:method strings (render methods) that the dark shader will not be applied to. Each string consists of the class and the method (or any substring) to block the dark shader. For example, 'renderHunger' is sufficient to block 'net.minecraftforge.client.gui.overlay.ForgeGui:renderFood' (either will work).
