What is Dark Mode Everywhere?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide
Dark Mode Everywhere gives you dark GUIs across the game. It uses the built-in 1.18 Minecraft shaders to turn GUI textures into a dark version, so it works in any GUI, not just vanilla screens. It also tries to adjust text colors so nothing becomes hard to read in dark mode.[1]
It's a quality-of-life mod, so it's for anyone who spends long sessions in inventories, machine screens and menus and wants something easier on the eyes. It's MIT licensed.[1]
Switching modes
The mod currently ships with 3 dark modes. You change between them with the button at the bottom left of the screen.[1]
If you like tinkering, you can add new GUI shaders by editing the "darkmodeeverywhereshaders.json" file. You do that through a resource loader mod or a resource pack.[1]
Fixing visual glitches
The mod has a shader blacklist. It's a list of class and method names, or any part of them, that stop the dark shader from being applied. The mod's own default list covers things like the crosshair, hotbar, hunger bar, experience bar, sky and title screen. There's also a dump option, off by default in the mod, that logs every 5 seconds which classes and methods were drawing something while the dark shader tried to apply. It helps you find the name to add if one element looks wrong.[1]
In this pack
This version of the pack includes Dark Mode Everywhere 1.21-1.3.4. The mod was already in the pack by version 0.32 or earlier.[2]
Unverified The sources show no quests, crafting or progression role for this mod, including on the ATM Star path. It is not on that path, so you can use it whenever you like.
How do you get started with Dark Mode Everywhere?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Good news: Dark Mode Everywhere doesn't need a crafting chain. There's nothing to build first, so this section is about switching it on and tuning it to your taste.[1]
The mod uses the built-in 1.18 Minecraft shaders to turn GUI textures into a dark mode. Because it works through shaders, it can apply to pretty much any GUI in the game. It also tries to change text colors so they stay readable on the darker background.[1]
Your first steps
- Open a GUI and look for the button on the bottom left. The mod currently uses it to change between its dark modes.[1]
- Click that button to switch between the 3 dark modes the mod currently provides, and stop on the one that's easiest on your eyes.[1]
- If something looks off or the text is hard to read, report it. The mod author asks players to report visual issues so they can be fixed.[1]
Fixing things that shouldn't be dark
If the dark shader is hitting something you'd rather leave alone, the mod has a blacklist option called METHOD_SHADER_BLACKLIST. Each entry is a class and method name, or just part of one, that stops the dark shader from being used there. For example, using just renderHunger would keep the hunger bar from getting the dark shader.[1]
The mod's documented default blacklist already covers things like the crosshair, the title screen, the sky, the hotbar, food and the experience bar. It also includes one JEI fluid tank rendering method.[1]
Going further
If you want to add new GUI shaders, the mod lets you do it by editing darkmodeeverywhereshaders.json and loading your version through a resource pack or a resource loader mod.[1]
How does Dark Mode Everywhere work?
4 parts
Dark Mode Everywhere is not a machine or automation mod. It has no power, fluid or item handling to set up. What it does is change how GUIs look: it uses the built-in 1.18 Minecraft shaders to turn any GUI texture into a dark mode.[1]
How the dark mode works
Because the mod works through shaders, it can apply to any GUI in the game rather than a fixed list of screens. It also tries to change the text color when the original text would be hard to read on a dark background.[1]
Switching between modes
The mod currently provides 3 dark modes. You change between them by clicking the button on the bottom left.[1]
Adding your own GUI shaders
If you want more looks, you can add new GUI shaders by modifying "darkmodeeverywhereshaders.json". You do that with a Resource Loader mod or a Resource Pack.[1]
Shader blacklist and dump
The mod has a method blacklist that stops the dark shader from being used on certain things. Each entry is a string made of a class and a method, or just any part of one. For example, using just renderHunger would stop the hunger bar from getting the dark shader. The mod's project page shows a default list, which is the mod's default and not necessarily this pack's value.[1]
- The default blacklist on the project page includes renderCrosshair, renderHotbar, renderFood and renderExperienceBar, so the HUD elements stay as they are.[1]
- It also lists renderSky, setupOverlayRenderState, the whole ForgeGui class and net.minecraft.client.gui.screens.TitleScreen.[1]
- One entry targets the JEI fluid tank renderer (the drawTextureWithMasking method), which keeps fluid tank drawing in JEI out of the dark shader.[1]
To find out what to blacklist, there is a dump option. When it is turned on, it dumps every 5 seconds which classes and methods were used to render something on screen while the dark shader was trying to be used. It is off by default. Entries in the dump look like net.minecraftforge.client.gui.overlay.ForgeGui:renderHunger (class:method), and you can copy any part of one into the blacklist.[1]
Unverified Whether this pack changes the blacklist or the dump setting is unverified: the sources here include no config file for this mod in the pack, so only the defaults from the mod's project page are shown above.
Which Dark Mode Everywhere config options matter?
4 parts
Dark Mode Everywhere only has a handful of client options, and they all live in one file. The pack changes two of them, both for the inventory button's position. The rest are button visibility and the shader blacklist.[3]
Inventory button position
These are the two values the pack changed from the mod default. [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Inventory Button.X]] sets how many pixels the button sits from the left of the GUI. The pack uses 50, and the mod default is 32. [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Inventory Button.Y]] sets the distance from the bottom of the GUI. The pack uses 7, and the mod default is 2. Both must be greater than 0.[3]
Main menu button
[[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.SHOW]] is set to false in the pack, so the main menu button is turned off. The position options are [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.MAIN_X]] at 4 and [[config:config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml#Main Menu Button.MAIN_Y]] at 40. Both match the mod defaults, so the pack didn't change them.[3]
Shader blacklist
METHOD_SHADER_BLACKLIST is a list of class:method strings for render methods where the dark shader is not applied. A string can be just part of a method name, and it will still block a match. This is how things like the crosshair, hotbar, food bar and experience bar keep their normal look.[1][3]
The pack's list is long. Besides vanilla and Forge HUD methods such as renderCrosshair, renderHotbar, renderFood and renderExperienceBar, it also covers world and server list entries and the panorama cube map. It has entries for the JEI fluid tank renderer, AppleSkin's HUD overlay, and the FTB Quests, FTB Library and FTB Chunks screens too. The file doesn't mark this option as changed, so I can't say how it compares with the mod's own default list.[3]
Finding what to blacklist
METHOD_SHADER_DUMP is false in the pack. If you turn it on, the mod dumps every 5 seconds which methods were used to render GUIs that the dark shader was applied to. Each entry looks like a class:method string, and you can copy any of them (or a part of one) into the blacklist to stop that GUI from being darkened.[1][3]
What changed in Dark Mode Everywhere between versions?
Dark Mode Everywhere is in All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 as version 1.21-1.3.5. The pack ships it as the file darkmodeeverywhere-1.21-1.3.5.jar.[4]
It has been in the pack since the early days: it was first included in version 1.0 or earlier.[4]
Unverified The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, and the mod's own changelog for 1.21-1.3.5 is only a commit history that gives no individual changes here. Because of that, I can't confirm any specific changes between pack releases.

METHOD_SHADER_BLACKLIST A list of class:method strings (render methods) that the dark shader will not be applied to. Each string consists of the class and the method (or any substring) to block the dark shader. For example, 'renderHunger' is sufficient to block 'net.minecraftforge.client.gui.overlay.ForgeGui:renderFood' (either will work). config/darkmodeeverywhere-client.toml | ["mezz.jei.common.render.FluidTankRenderer:drawTextureWithMasking","mezz.jei.library.render.FluidTankRenderer:drawTextureWithMasking","renderCrosshair","m_93080_","renderSky","m_202423_","renderHotbar","m_93009_","m_193837_","setupOverlayRenderState","net.minecraftforge.client.gui.overlay.ForgeGui","renderFood","renderExperienceBar","m_93071_","renderLogo","m_280037_","m_280118_","net.minecraft.client.gui.Gui","net.minecraft.src.C_3431_","renderDirtBackground","m_280039_","m_280039_","configured.client.screen.ListMenuScreen","OnlineServerEntry:drawIcon","OnlineServerEntry:m_99889_","WorldSelectionList$WorldListEntry:render","WorldSelectionList$WorldListEntry:m_6311_","CubeMap:render","CubeMap:m_108849_","squeek.appleskin.client.HUDOverlayHandler","shadows.packmenu.ExtendedMenuScreen","dev.ftb.mods.ftbquests.client.gui.quests.QuestPanel:drawOffsetBackground","dev.ftb.mods.ftblibrary.ui.GuiHelper:drawTexturedRect","dev.ftb.mods.ftbchunks.client.FTBChunksClient:renderHud","dev.ftb.mods.ftblibrary.icon.AtlasSpriteIcon:draw"] | not documented |
