What is AppleSkin?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

AppleSkin is a small quality-of-life mod that makes Minecraft's food system visible. It adds various food-related HUD improvements, so you can see exactly what's going on with your hunger instead of guessing.[1]

The key thing to know is that AppleSkin doesn't add or change any mechanics. It only shows you information about mechanics that are normally invisible, like saturation and exhaustion. Your food works exactly the same as before, you just get to see the numbers.[1]

What it shows you

  • Food value information in item tooltips, so you can compare foods before you eat them.[1]
  • A visualization of your saturation and exhaustion right on the HUD.[1]
  • A preview of how much hunger and saturation a food will restore while you're holding it.[1]
  • A preview of how much health a food will restore while you're holding it.[1]
  • Hunger, saturation and exhaustion info added to the debug overlay (F3).[1]

Who it's for

Honestly, pretty much everyone. Because it's purely informational, you get the benefit from your very first day in the world. It's especially handy when you're choosing which food to carry, or when you want to know how long your saturation will last before your hunger bar starts dropping.[1]

In this pack

This pack ships AppleSkin version 3.0.5+mc1.21. It's mostly a client-side mod, but it also needs to be on the server to display accurate saturation and exhaustion values, because it syncs those values to your client. When you play the pack on a server running the same mod list, the numbers you see should be accurate.[1][2]

How do you get started with AppleSkin?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: AppleSkin is a food and hunger HUD mod, so there is nothing to craft or build to get started. This pack has no recipes for it, no quests that involve it, and it adds no items of its own. It just shows you information that Minecraft already tracks but hides by default.[1][3]

What to do first

  1. Pick up any food and look at its tooltip. The mod can show the hunger and saturation values of food there while you hold SHIFT.[3]
  2. Hold a piece of food and watch your HUD. The mod previews the hunger, and the saturation if that overlay is enabled, that the food would restore. It can also show the estimated health the food would restore on your health bar.[1][3]
  3. Look at your hunger bar while you play. The mod can overlay your current saturation on it, and it can show your food exhaustion as a progress bar behind the hunger bar.[1][3]
  4. Open the debug screen (F3) if you want the raw numbers. The mod can add your hunger, saturation and exhaustion levels there.[1][3]

Options worth knowing about

  • Always show food values in tooltip: turn this on and the hunger and saturation values appear automatically, without holding SHIFT.[3]
  • Off-hand overlays: there is an option to show the hunger, saturation and health overlays for food in your off-hand as well.[3]
  • Flash and animation tweaks: you can set how visible the flashing icons are at their brightest (1.0 is fully opaque, 0.0 is fully transparent). You can also make the overlay shake to match Minecraft's own icon animations.[3]
Tip: The mod does not add or change any mechanics. It only shows you saturation and exhaustion, which are normally invisible. If you want to learn how those work, the Hunger article on the Minecraft wiki covers it.[1]
Watch out: The mod is mostly client-side, but it needs to be on the server to display accurate saturation and exhaustion values on the client. If those numbers look wrong or missing on a server, that is the first thing to check.[1]

Unverified I could not confirm from the sources which of these options are on or off by default in this pack, or whether the pack changes any of them. Check the mod's config screen in-game to see what you actually have.

How does AppleSkin work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news for your automation plans: there's nothing to build here. AppleSkin is a food and hunger HUD mod, and the project page says it does not add or change any mechanics. It only shows you information about mechanics that are invisible by default, so the sources describe no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item handling for it.[1]

What it shows you

  • Food values in item tooltips: the hunger and saturation of a food, shown while you hold SHIFT, or automatically if the "always" option is turned on.[1][3]
  • When enabled, your current saturation level is drawn over the hunger bar, and exhaustion can be drawn as a progress bar behind it.[1][3]
  • A preview of the hunger (and saturation) a food would restore while you hold it. This can also work for food in your off-hand when that option is on.[1][3]
  • When enabled, the estimated health a food would restore is shown on the health bar.[1][3]
  • When enabled, your hunger, saturation and exhaustion levels appear in the F3 debug screen.[1][3]

Client and server

Watch out: AppleSkin is mostly client-side, but it needs to be on the server too if you want accurate saturation and exhaustion values on your client. On a vanilla server, the project page points to server plugins that provide those values.[1]

The mod syncs saturation and exhaustion from the server to your client, which is why the server-side install matters.[1]

Options you can toggle

The mod's option descriptions tell us what each setting does. Each one below is an on/off display toggle (it only acts when set to true), except the flash opacity.[3]

  • showFoodValuesInTooltip: when true, shows a food's hunger and saturation in its tooltip while you hold SHIFT.[3]
  • showFoodValuesInTooltipAlways: when true, shows those tooltip values automatically, with no SHIFT needed.[3]
  • showSaturationHudOverlay: when true, overlays your saturation level on the hunger bar.[3]
  • showFoodExhaustionHudUnderlay: when true, shows exhaustion as a progress bar behind the hunger bar.[3]
  • showFoodValuesHudOverlay: when true, shows the hunger that would be restored by the food you are holding. It also shows saturation if showSaturationHudOverlay is true.[3]
  • showFoodValuesHudOverlayWhenOffhand: when true, enables the hunger, saturation and health overlays for food in your off-hand.[3]
  • showFoodHealthHudOverlay: when true, shows the estimated health restored by food on the health bar.[3]
  • showVanillaAnimationsOverlay: when true, the health and hunger overlay shakes to match Minecraft's icon animations.[3]
  • maxHudOverlayFlashAlpha: sets how visible the flashing icons are at their most visible point, from 1.0 (fully opaque) to 0.0 (fully transparent).[3]
  • showFoodStatsInDebugOverlay: when true, shows hunger, saturation and exhaustion in the debug screen.[3]

Unverified The pack's actual default values for these options are unconfirmed, because no config files for this mod were available. If something isn't showing on your HUD, check the mod's settings in-game rather than assuming a default.

Which AppleSkin config options matter?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.11 guide

Unverified This pack doesn't ship a config file for AppleSkin, so there are no pack-changed values to point at here. Anything you tweak will come from the mod's own in-game options rather than a pack override, and the behaviour you see is whatever the mod does out of the box.

Worth knowing before you go looking for settings: AppleSkin only surfaces information that Minecraft already tracks invisibly. It does not add or change any hunger mechanics, so there's nothing in it that can be balanced up or down.[1]

What it shows you

  • Food value information added to item tooltips.[1]
  • A visualisation of saturation and exhaustion on the HUD.[1]
  • A preview of the hunger and saturation you'd restore while you're holding food.[1]
  • A preview of the health you'd restore while holding food.[1]
  • Hunger, saturation and exhaustion values in the F3 debug overlay.[1]

Client side vs server side

AppleSkin is mostly a client-side mod, but it does need to be present on the server as well for your client to display accurate saturation and exhaustion values. On a pack server that's already handled for you, since the mod syncs those values down to the client.[1]

Tip: If you take your client to a vanilla server, the saturation and exhaustion readouts won't be accurate unless that server runs one of the AppleSkin companion plugins.[1]

What changed in AppleSkin between versions?

1 part

All the Mons 1.3.0 ships AppleSkin 3.0.9+mc1.21 (the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21). The mod was first included in All the Mons 0.3.0-beta or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's recent releases.[4]

Mod changelog

  • 3.0.9+mc1.21 (the version in this pack): fixed HUD overlay elements not being hidden properly while you are mounted. This covers saturation, restored hunger/saturation and restored health.[4][5]
  • 3.0.9+mc1.21: fixed the config option showFoodValuesHudOverlay not properly hiding the saturation restored by held food.[5]
  • 3.0.8+mc1.21: fixed a server crash when a client without the mod joined a server that had it installed. This was a regression that started in 1.20.5, and the mod is meant to be fully optional on both sides.[6]
  • 3.0.8+mc1.21: added new translations from the latest Fabric version of the mod.[6]
  • 3.0.7+mc1.21: added integration with the NeoForge config screen, which you can open from the Mods screen.[7]
Tip: Because the mod is meant to be fully optional on both sides, the 3.0.8 fix matters for servers: a player without AppleSkin should no longer crash a server that has it installed.[6]
