What is Summoning Rituals?

2 parts

Summoning Rituals is a NeoForge mod that lets modpack developers build custom summoning rituals that spawn items, mobs, or run commands. The mod itself adds no recipes by default, so every ritual you meet comes from the pack. It also has native KubeJS integration, which is the easiest way for developers to write new rituals.[1]

This pack includes version 1.21.1-3.14.2 of the mod.[2]

Where you meet it in the pack

You will use the Summoning Altar in the Legendaries chapter. The quest "The Summoning Altar" quest unlocks after Catching Legendaries, and it explains why you need the altar: some legendary Pokémon will not spawn in the wild, so you have to call them.[3]

A ritual works like this, according to the quest:[3]

  1. Place a catalyst item on the altar.[3]
  2. Scatter the ritual's ingredients on the ground around it.[3]
  3. Build the block pattern the recipe demands.[3]
  4. Right-click the altar to begin, then wait for the summon to finish.[3]

Each quest in that chapter lists what its own ritual needs, so you gather the rare pieces, build the structure, and draw the legend into the world.[3]

Reading altar recipes in JEI

A second quest, a quest in "The Pika Star", teaches you to read altar recipes in JEI:[4]

  • The altar sits in the center.[4]
  • Around the altar are the offerings the ritual needs. These can be items you insert by using them on the altar, or entities that must be near it.[4]
  • The initiator is above the altar. It is the key item, and you use it on the altar once everything else is ready.[4]
  • The Nether Star icon at the top left shows the conditions for the ritual to start.[4]
  • The structure block icon at the bottom left appears when a recipe needs a block pattern. Click it to preview the pattern in the world.[4]
Tip: Before you start a ritual, check its JEI recipe. It shows the offerings, the initiator, the start conditions and the block pattern preview.[4]

How do you get started with Summoning Rituals?

3 parts

Your first stop is the Summoning Altar. Every ritual in this pack runs through it, and the mod itself ships no recipes by default. That means what you can summon, and what it costs, is decided by the pack.[1][3]

The quest "The Summoning Altar" quest unlocks after Catching Legendaries. It explains that some legendary Pokémon won't turn up in the wild and have to be called with the altar.[3]

Step 1: craft the Summoning Altar

The altar recipe was added by the pack through a KubeJS shaped recipe, so check this one rather than relying on any other version of the mod. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[5]

Block of Unobtainium - Vibranium AlloyCrafting TableBlock of Vibranium - Allthemodium Alloy

Step 2: learn how a ritual runs

Once the altar is placed, a ritual follows this order:[3]

  1. Place the catalyst item on the altar.[3]
  2. Scatter the ritual's ingredients on the ground around the altar.[3]
  3. Raise the block pattern the recipe demands, if it has one.[3]
  4. Right-click the altar to begin, then wait for the summon to finish.[3]
Tip: Insert the key item last. The mod's own hint says to insert last to start the ritual, so get everything else ready before you use the initiator on the altar.[4][6]

Step 3: read the altar recipes in JEI

Each ritual's requirements show up in JEI, and the pack's quest a quest in "The Pika Star" explains the layout:[4]

  • The altar itself sits in the center.[4]
  • Around the altar are the offerings needed to start the ritual. These can be items inserted by using them on the altar, or entities that must be near it.[4]
  • The initiator sits above the altar. It's the key item you use on the altar once everything else is ready.[4]
  • The Nether Star icon at the top left shows the conditions for the ritual to start.[4]
  • The structure block icon at the bottom left appears when a recipe needs a block pattern. Click it to preview the pattern in the world.[4][6]

After that, follow the quests below The Summoning Altar. Each one lists what its ritual needs, so you can gather the rare pieces, build the structure and draw the legend into the world.[3]

How does Summoning Rituals work?

4 parts

Summoning Rituals is a toolkit for pack makers. It lets them create custom summoning rituals for items, mobs and commands. The mod adds no recipes by default, and it has native KubeJS integration, which is the easiest way to create them.[1]

The Summoning Altar

The block at the center of every ritual is the Summoning Altar. In this pack you craft it with a KubeJS recipe that the pack added, shown below.[5]

This shaped recipe is added by the pack.

Starting a ritual

The mod's own tooltips give you two hints. First, the item you insert last is what starts the ritual. Second, you can click to show a preview in the world.[6]

Tip: Put your other ingredients in first and keep the final item for last, because inserting it is what starts the ritual.[6]

Altar inventory size

The pack changed the altar's inventory. inventory_size is set to 19 slots, while the mod default is 16. The allowed range is 1 to 64.[7]

Watch out: Changing the slot count does not apply to altars that are already placed. You need to break and replace them to get the new size.[7]

Command outputs

A ritual can run a command as its output. announce_command is set to true in this pack, so the log announces whenever a recipe output command is invoked. This helps you work out where a command came from.[7]

How do you progress through Summoning Rituals?

3 parts

In this pack, the path into Summoning Rituals runs through one item: the Summoning Altar. Here is where the quest book puts it, how you craft it, and how a ritual works once you have it.[3][5]

Step 1: Reach the Summoning Altar quest

In the Legendaries chapter, the quest "The Summoning Altar" quest comes after the Catching Legendaries quest. Its task is to obtain the altar. The quest explains that some legendary Pokémon will not be found in the wild and have to be called with a ritual.[3]

Step 2: Craft the altar

The pack adds its own shaped recipe for the altar, so don't expect the mod's default. Here it is.[5]

This altar recipe is added by the pack through KubeJS.

Step 3: Learn how a ritual works

The quest describes the flow like this: place a catalyst item on the altar, scatter the ritual's ingredients on the ground around it, and raise the block pattern the recipe demands. Then right-click the altar to begin and wait for the summon to finish.[3]

Another quest, a quest in "The Pika Star" in The Pika Star chapter, teaches you to read the altar's JEI recipes. The altar itself sits in the center. The offerings needed to start the ritual go around it, and they can be items inserted by using them on the altar or entities that must be near it. The initiator sits above the altar. It is the key item, and you use it on the altar once everything else is ready.[4]

  • The Nether Star icon at the top left of the JEI recipe shows the conditions for the ritual to start.[4]
  • The Structure Block icon at the bottom left appears when a recipe needs a block pattern. Click it to preview the pattern in the world.[4]
Tip: Before you gather anything for a ritual, open its altar recipe in JEI and preview the block pattern in the world. That way you know which structure to build before you collect the rare pieces.[3][4]

How does Summoning Rituals work with other mods?

2 parts

Summoning Rituals does not add any recipes by default, and it has native KubeJS support, so the pack decides how the altar connects to everything else. The links below come from the pack's own recipe and quests.[1]

Crafting the altar

The Summoning Altar is crafted with a shaped recipe that the pack adds through KubeJS. It mixes two Allthemodium alloy blocks with vanilla items, and any candle works for the candle slot. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[5]

Recipe id: allthemons:summoning_ritual_altar

Added by the pack, not a Summoning Rituals default. It uses Block of Unobtainium - Vibranium Alloy and Block of Vibranium - Allthemodium Alloy.

Quests that use the altar

The quest "The Summoning Altar" quest in the Legendaries chapter has you obtain the altar. It comes after the Catching Legendaries quest. Its text explains that some legendary Pokémon will not be found in the wild and have to be called with the altar. You place a catalyst item on the altar, scatter the ritual's ingredients on the ground around it, and raise the block pattern the recipe demands. Then you right-click the altar to begin and wait for the summon to finish.[3]

The quest a quest in "The Pika Star" in The Pika Star chapter also asks for the altar. It is a checkmark quest that teaches you how to read altar recipes in JEI:[4]

  • Center: the altar itself.[4]
  • Around the altar: the offerings needed for the ritual to start. These can be items inserted by using them on the altar, or entities that must be near it.[4]
  • Above the altar: the initiator, the key item. Use it on the altar when everything else is ready.[4]
  • Top left, the Nether Star icon: the conditions for the ritual to start.[4]
  • Bottom left, the Structure Block icon: when a recipe needs a block pattern, click it to preview the pattern in the world.[4]

Which All the Mons quests use Summoning Rituals?

2 parts

Summoning Rituals shows up in the Legendaries chapter and in The Pika Star chapter of the quest book. Each has a quest that asks for the Summoning Altar, and both explain how rituals work before you try one.[3][4]

Legendaries: The Summoning Altar

In the Legendaries chapter, "The Summoning Altar" quest comes after the Catching Legendaries quest. Its task is the Summoning Altar.[3]

The quest explains why you need it: some legendary Pokémon will not be found in the wild, so they have to be called. Here is the process it describes:[3]

  1. Place a catalyst item on the altar.[3]
  2. Scatter the ritual's ingredients on the ground around it.[3]
  3. Raise the block pattern the recipe demands.[3]
  4. Right-click the altar to begin, then wait for the summon to finish.[3]

The quest text adds that each quest below it lists what its ritual needs, so you gather the rare pieces, build the structure and draw the legend into the world.[3]

The Pika Star: reading altar recipes

The Pika Star chapter has a quest in "The Pika Star", which also asks for the Summoning Altar and has a checkmark task. It comes after another quest in the same chapter. It is a guide to reading the altar's JEI recipes:[4]

  • Center: the altar itself.[4]
  • Around the altar: the offerings needed to start the ritual. These can be items inserted by using them on the altar, or entities that must be near it.[4]
  • Initiator, above the altar: the key item that starts the ritual. You use it on the altar once everything else is ready.[4]
  • Top left Nether Star icon: the conditions for the ritual to start.[4]
  • Bottom left Structure Block: if a recipe needs a block pattern, click it to preview the pattern in the world.[4]
Tip: Open the altar's JEI recipe before you gather anything. It shows the offerings, the initiator, the conditions and a previewable block pattern in one view.[4]

Which Summoning Rituals config options matter?

2 parts

Summoning Rituals keeps its settings small. The mod adds no recipes of its own, so the rituals you see come from the pack, and the config file only covers a couple of Altar behaviors. Both options live in the common config.[1][7]

Altar inventory size

The option you will most likely care about is inventory_size. It sets the number of slots in the Altar's inventory. The mod default is 16, but this pack changed it to 19. The allowed range is 1 to 64.[7]

Watch out: Changes to the inventory size do not apply to Altars that are already placed. You need to break and replace an existing Altar to get the new slot count.[7]

Command announcements

announce_command controls whether the log announces when a recipe output command is invoked. It helps you work out where a command came from. This pack sets it to true, and that is not listed as a change from the mod default.[7]

What changed in Summoning Rituals between versions?

1 part

This pack ships Summoning Rituals 3.14.2, and the mod was already included in the earliest pack release the mod list records. There are no pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first. These are the releases I have changelogs for, not necessarily every release the mod has had.[2]

Mod releases

  • 3.14.2 (the version in this pack): the actual initiator stack is now exposed in the recipe info for events.[2][8]
  • 3.14.1: fixed class loading issues that broke recipe viewers when KubeJS is not installed.[9]
  • 3.13.3: fixed a crash when KubeJS is not installed.[10]
  • 3.13.2: added localization support for biomes in biome conditions, and changed the animation calculation base from system nano time to Minecraft's DeltaTracker.[11]
  • 3.11.1: added a utility method for getting the position in summoning KubeJS events, and fixed the level property not being accessible in those events.[12]

If you write KubeJS scripts for rituals, the 3.11.1 and 3.14.2 changes are the ones to know about, since they touch what the summoning events give you. The 3.13.3 and 3.14.1 fixes only matter for setups without KubeJS.[8][9][10][12]
