Building Gadgets 2 is a mod in All the Mons 1.3.0, where it is version 1.3.9. We can build it better, stronger, faster. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Building Gadgets 2?

3 parts

Building Gadgets 2 adds a handful of tools that make big building jobs quick: building many blocks at once, swapping materials, copying structures, moving them, and clearing out space. This pack includes version 1.3.9 of the mod.[1][2][3]

The gadgets

  • Building Gadget: builds many blocks at once. Shift right-click a block to choose what to build with, then right click to place the previewed blocks. The default mode is Build to Me.[4]
  • Exchanging Gadget: swaps one set of blocks for another. It can't replace air, so use the Building Gadget for that. The default mode is Surface.[5]
  • Copy Paste Gadget: copies a structure by its opposing corners, then pastes it elsewhere. A material list in the settings menu shows which items you have and which you're missing.[6]
  • Cut Paste Gadget: works like the Copy Paste Gadget, but moves the structure. Block-entity data, including chest contents, moves with it. It has no undo, and it can only hold one structure at a time.[7][8]
  • Destruction Gadget: clears a large area you set in the settings menu. The cleared blocks are voided, but you can undo the action.[9]

Energy and settings

The gadgets need Forge Energy (FE) for most of their functions, so charge them before you start. Hold the settings key, which defaults to G, to open each gadget's menu. Undo remembers the last 10 actions the gadget made.[2][8][10]

Tip: When you look at a block with the Building Gadget, you see a ghostly preview of what will be placed. Blocks with a red overlay mean you're missing the items or the energy to place them, so check the preview first.[4]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack's quest book introduces the gadgets in quests that share the name "Building Gadgets" quest and "Building Gadgets" quest. Each is completed by obtaining any one of the gadgets. The first sits in the Building Tips chapter, right after the Paxel quest. The other is in the Tips and Poke Tricks chapter, where the quest text ties the gadgets to diamonds and recommends them for bigger bases and for clearing space with the Destruction Gadget.[2][3]

Unverified The quest sources here do not show whether this mod is on the ATM Star quest path, so this guide does not place it there.

How do you get started with Building Gadgets 2?

5 parts

Building Gadgets 2 gives you a small set of tools for placing, swapping, clearing and copying lots of blocks at once. In this pack the quest book covers them in the Building Tips chapter, right after the Paxel quest, so a good first step is to open "Building Gadgets" quest. It tells you each gadget needs energy and has a menu that opens with G by default. A second quest, "Building Gadgets" quest, in the Tips and Poke Tricks chapter also covers the gadgets and pitches them as a way to build bigger bases or clear out space.[2][3]

Watch out: Every gadget needs Forge Energy (FE) for most of its functions. Many mods can charge items with FE, so make sure you have a way to charge your gadgets before you try to build with them.[2][10]

Step one: make the Building Gadget

Start with the Building Gadget. It's the one that actually places blocks, and it's the easiest way to see how the whole system works. The pack added its own recipe for it, so it differs from the mod's defaults.[4][11]

This recipe was added by the pack.

Once it has some energy, shift right-click a block in the world to choose what to build with. Hold the settings key (G by default) to pick a building mode. The default is Build to Me. Aim at a block and you'll see a ghostly preview, and a red overlay means you're missing items or energy. Right click to place. Blocks you don't have items for are skipped.[4][10]

Tip: Made a mistake? Undo remembers the last 10 actions the gadget made, and you can trigger it with a hotkey or from the gadget's settings menu.[8]

Step two: add the Exchanging Gadget

Next, craft the Exchanging Gadget. It swaps one set of blocks for another, which is great for retexturing a build. It can't replace air, so keep the Building Gadget for that.[5]

It's set up like the Building Gadget: shift right-click to choose the target block, then right click to exchange. Its default mode is Surface. You can enchant it with silk touch, otherwise grass returns dirt. To undo an exchange you need the original items in your inventory.[5]

Step three: clear space with the Destruction Gadget

The Destruction Gadget clears a large area quickly. Set the area in the settings menu, then right click a block to remove everything highlighted. Cleared blocks are voided, so they won't drop as items. You can still undo, which puts the voided blocks back without using items from your inventory.[9]

Step four: copy builds, then save them

When you have a build worth repeating, make the Copy Paste Gadget. In copy mode, right click one corner of a structure and shift-right click the opposite corner. Then switch to paste mode, check the preview and right click to place it. Pasting uses items from your inventory, and the material list in the settings menu shows what you have and what you're missing.[6]

To keep a favorite design, craft the Template Manager. Put a Copy Paste Gadget in the top slot and paper in the bottom slot, then click Save to turn the paper into a template. The load button copies it back onto the gadget.[12]

Step five: move structures with the Cut Paste Gadget

Last comes the Cut Paste Gadget, which moves a structure instead of duplicating it. It works like the Copy Paste Gadget, but nothing is removed until you click the cut button in the settings menu. It stores only one structure at a time, and pasting erases the stored data. It also has no undo.[7][8]

How does Building Gadgets 2 work?

8 parts

Building Gadgets 2 is less a machine mod and more a set of power tools. Everything runs through a handful of gadgets, a settings menu and a few shared systems like energy, fluids and bound inventories. Here is how it all fits together in this pack.[10][13]

Power and the settings menu

All of the gadgets need Forge Energy (FE) for most of their functions, so charge them with any mod that can charge items. Hold the settings menu key (default 'g') to open a gadget's settings. Each gadget has its own settings.[10]

When you aim a Building Gadget or Exchanging Gadget at a block, you get a ghostly preview. Any block you lack the items or energy for gets a red overlay, so you can check before you click.[4][5]

Building and exchanging

With the Building Gadget, give it some energy, then shift right-click a block to choose what to build with. Right click to place. Items come out of your inventory, and any block you don't have the item for is skipped. The default mode is Build to Me.[4]

This pack changed the Building Gadget recipe. The mod's own recipe is removed and replaced with a pack recipe, so don't expect the default recipe from other modpacks.[11][14]

Pack recipe, replaces the mod default.

The Exchanging Gadget swaps one set of blocks for another, but it can't replace air (use the Building Gadget for that). Shift right-click a block to pick the block to exchange to. The default mode is Surface. You get the items for the removed blocks back, and an enchanted silk touch gadget keeps blocks like grass intact instead of returning dirt.[5]

Range and building modes

The building and exchanging gadgets both have a range setting, which is generally an area. In Horizontal Row mode a range of 3 affects 3 blocks total, 1 on each side of the block you're looking at, and in wall modes a range of 3 gives a 3x3 wall. Even numbers are rounded or change the wall height slightly, so check the preview.[15]

  • Build to Me: builds a row from the block face you're looking at to you, horizontal or vertical depending on the face. Range is ignored, and 'place on top' builds to your head rather than your feet.[16]
  • Grid: places blocks in a grid, handy for torches or glowstone. A higher range spreads the blocks apart. It also exists as an exchanger mode.[17]
  • Horizontal Row: builds away from you in the direction you look, which is good for bridges. On the exchanger it swaps blocks to the left and right of where you look.[18]
  • Horizontal Wall: with 'place on top' on, it builds an area above the block you look at, or toward you if you look at a side. With it off, it builds around the block.[19]
  • Vertical Column: builds up or down from a top or bottom face, or both up and down around a side face. It works on both the building and exchanging gadgets.[20]
  • Vertical Wall: builds a wall up or down from a top or bottom face, or around the block if you look at a side.[21]
  • Stairs: builds up and away from you or up and towards you, depending on whether you're above or below the block. The in-game guide itself calls this mode confusing.[22]
  • Surface: extends the set of blocks you're looking at. Fuzzy mode decides whether it targets any block or only the same kind. On the exchanger, connected mode only swaps blocks connected to the ones you look at.[23]

Two toggles apply across modes. 'Place on top' places on top of a block instead of around it, and works differently per mode (some modes ignore it). Anchor locks in the block you're looking at so you can move around and still right click to build, but a range change may not apply until you remove and replace the anchor.[24][25]

Copy Paste and Cut Paste

The Copy Paste Gadget replicates structures. In 'copy' mode, right click one corner and shift-right click the opposite corner, and a green outline appears. Switch to 'paste' mode for a preview, with the first block you right clicked as the starting point, then right click to place. Needed items are taken from your inventory and blocks you lack items for are skipped.[6]

The 'material list' option in the settings menu shows what you have and what you're missing. The Adjust Placement window lets you nudge the start and end blocks with plus and minus buttons, or switch to absolute world coordinates. Paste mode has a similar window for the start block.[6]

Crafting Shaped

Recipe id: buildinggadgets2:gadget_copy_paste

The Cut Paste Gadget works the same way, but the outline is red and the structure is only removed when you click the 'cut' button in the settings menu. Pasting costs no items because it reuses the blocks you removed. All block-entity data moves with it, including chest contents and block configurations.[7]

Watch out: The Cut Paste Gadget stores only one structure at a time, and placing it erases the stored data. Cutting a new area while data exists prompts you to confirm, and if you do, the first set of data is lost forever. It also has no undo.[7][8]

Rotate turns a Copy Paste or Cut Paste structure around its starting point. Paste Replace is available only on those two gadgets. When it's off, they only overwrite blocks you could normally overwrite, like water and tall grass, which can cause blocks to be lost with the Cut Paste Gadget. When it's on, they replace any block, including air, and the replaced blocks are voided with no drops.[26][27]

Destruction

The Destruction Gadget clears a large area. Set the area in the settings menu, relative to the block and face you're looking at, then right click to void every highlighted block. Voided blocks are removed from the world, not dropped. Undo puts them back without taking anything from your inventory.[9]

Templates

The Template Manager saves structures from the Copy Paste Gadget. Put the gadget in the top slot and paper in the bottom slot, then click 'Save' to turn the paper into a template. A render of the structure appears that you can pan, spin and zoom. 'Load' copies the structure from a template back to the gadget.[12]

The Render button toggles to Materials Mode, which lists the needed materials. Templates can be named, and the name shows on the item. 'Copy' puts a json string on your clipboard to share outside Minecraft. A friend who has copied that string can click 'paste' to replicate your structure, as long as there is paper in the bottom slot.[12]

Fluids and bound inventories

Gadgets can work with fluids once Raytrace Fluids is on. Then exchangers can swap out fluids and builders can build on top of them. When it's off, they ignore fluids and build on the blocks behind. Select a fluid with shift-right click, and have a bucket with the right fluid to place it. Tank mods like Mekanism work too, with fluids removed from or inserted into the tanks. The Copy Paste Gadget handles fluids as well.[28][29]

When you undo or exchange fluids, the gadget looks for somewhere to put the fluid, like an empty bucket or tank. If it finds nothing, the fluid is voided.[28]

Bind Inventory lets a gadget pull items from, and push them into, an inventory. Enable 'bind inventory' mode in the gadget's settings, then shift-right click a chest or other inventory. A blue box means it worked. Shift-right click a non-inventory block, like grass, to disconnect. You can also bind to an Applied Energistics 2 system through its wireless access point, and then range is unlimited.[30]

Undo and animations

Undo reverses the gadget's last task, whether that's removing built blocks or swapping blocks back. It remembers the last 10 actions and is available by hotkey or from the settings menu. Undoing an exchange needs the right items in your inventory, for example grass to reverse grass into stone bricks.[5][8]

Each gadget can have a build animation, which defaults to 'grow'. It only changes how the building looks, not how the gadget works.[31]

How do you progress through Building Gadgets 2?

3 parts

Building Gadgets 2 is not a tiered mod in this pack. You get a handful of separate gadgets, each with its own recipe, and the quests treat them as one milestone. The first quest is in the Building Tips chapter, right after the Paxel quest: "Building Gadgets" quest. It accepts any one of the Building, Exchanging, Copy Paste, Cut Paste or Destruction gadgets.[2]

A second quest with the same name and the same set of accepted gadgets, "Building Gadgets" quest, sits in the Tips and Poke Tricks chapter. Its text says diamonds let you create these gadgets, and it recommends them for bigger bases and for clearing space with the Destruction Gadget.[3]

Tip: Every gadget needs Forge Energy (FE) to work, so charge it before you start. Hold the settings key, G by default, to open each gadget's menu.[2][10]

The gadgets and how to craft them

The Building Gadget places lots of blocks at once. Shift right-click a block to pick what to build with, check the ghost preview, then right-click to place. Its default mode is Build to Me, and blocks you don't have items for are skipped.[4][16]

This recipe is added by the pack through KubeJS.

Watch out: The Building Gadget recipe is the pack's own, added with KubeJS. The other gadgets and the Template Manager use the mod's own recipes, so don't rely on a Building Gadget recipe you remember from another pack.[11]

The Exchanging Gadget swaps existing blocks for others. It can't replace air, so use the Building Gadget for that. Its default mode is Surface, and you can enchant it with silk touch.[5]

The Destruction Gadget clears big areas. Set the area in the settings menu, then right-click a block to void everything highlighted. You can undo a clear, and undoing doesn't cost you items.[9]

Suggested order

  • Start with the Building Gadget and Exchanging Gadget. They cover placing and swapping blocks, and both have a range setting.[4][5][15]
  • Add the Copy Paste Gadget when you want to duplicate builds.[6]
  • Use the Cut Paste Gadget when you need to relocate a build, remembering it has no undo.[7][8]
  • Use the Destruction Gadget for clearing space, and keep in mind that cleared blocks are voided.[3][9]
  • Undo remembers the last 10 actions a gadget made, with the exception of the Cut Paste Gadget, which has no undo.[8]

How does Building Gadgets 2 work with other mods?

2 parts

Building Gadgets 2 has one clear link to another mod in this pack: the pack adds its own recipe for the Building Gadget with a KubeJS script, and that recipe uses Diamond Gear, an item from a different mod.[11]

Quest tie-ins

Two quests cover the gadgets. "Building Gadgets" quest in the "Tips and Poke Tricks" chapter links them to diamonds and says they help you build bigger bases or clear out space with the Destruction Gadget.[3]

"Building Gadgets" quest sits in the "Building Tips" chapter, right after the Paxel quest. It reminds you that each gadget needs energy and has a menu, opened with G by default.[2]

Powering your gadgets

The gadgets need Forge Energy (FE) for most of their functions. The mod's in-game guide says many mods add support for charging items with Forge Energy, so a charger from another mod can keep your gadgets topped up.[10]

Which All the Mons quests use Building Gadgets 2?

3 parts

Building Gadgets 2 appears in two quests in this pack, one in the "Building Tips" chapter and one in the "Tips and Poke Tricks" chapter. Both are named Building Gadgets: "Building Gadgets" quest and "Building Gadgets" quest. They ask for the same items, so whichever gadget you get first can cover either one.[2][3]

Building Tips

In this chapter, "Building Gadgets" quest accepts any one of these gadgets: the Building Gadget, Exchanging Gadget, Copy Paste Gadget, Cut Paste Gadget or Destruction Gadget. It comes after the Paxel quest, so finish that one first.[2]

The quest text describes the mod as a few very helpful items made for building. It also gives you two practical details: each gadget needs Energy to work, and each has a menu that opens with the G key by default.[2]

Tips and Poke Tricks

The second quest, "Building Gadgets" quest, has the same task: hand in any one of the gadgets listed above. No prerequisite quest is listed for it.[3]

Its text points out that diamonds let you create the gadgets, and pitches them as great tools for building bigger bases. It also mentions the Destruction Gadget for clearing out space.[3]

What order should you do them in?

The only ordering confirmed here is inside Building Tips, where the gadget quest comes after the Paxel quest. The Tips and Poke Tricks quest has no listed prerequisite, and nothing here says which chapter to tackle first. Since both quests take the same items, one gadget can cover both.[2][3]
