What is Building Gadgets 2?
3 parts
Building Gadgets 2 gives you a set of tools that place, swap, copy and clear lots of blocks at once, so you can stop building one block at a time. This pack ships version 1.0.7.[1][2]
The mod's gadgets are the Building Gadget, Exchanging Gadget, Copy Paste Gadget and Destruction Gadget.[1][2][3][4][5]
What each gadget does
- The Building Gadget places a large number of blocks in one go. Shift right-click a block to choose what to build with, then right click to place what the ghostly preview shows.[2]
- The Exchanging Gadget swaps one set of blocks for another. It can't replace air, so use the Building Gadget for that.[3]
- The Copy Paste Gadget replicates structures. You right click one corner and shift-right click an opposing corner, then switch to paste mode and place the copy.[4]
- The Destruction Gadget clears a large area, and any blocks it clears are voided. You can undo it if you make a mistake.[5]
Power and settings
The gadgets need Forge Energy (FE) for most of their functions, so charge them with any mod that supports charging items. Hold the settings key (default 'g') to open the settings menu, where each gadget has its own options.[6]
Undo remembers the last 10 actions a gadget made, and you can reach it by hotkey or from the settings menu.[7]
In the quest book
The pack's quest book covers the mod in "Building Gadget" quest. It sits in the chapter "Useful mods and Items", which is chapter 3 of 44 and holds 37 quests. That quest asks you to get all four gadgets. The same chapter also has a quest for "Construction Wand" quest.[8]
How do you get started with Building Gadgets 2?
4 parts
Every gadget in Building Gadgets 2 runs on Forge Energy (FE), so before you craft anything, plan how you'll charge it. Many mods can charge items with FE. You open a gadget's settings menu by holding the settings key, which is 'g' by default.[6]
The pack's quest book has a "Building Gadget" quest quest in the chapter "Useful mods and Items" (chapter 3 of 44). It asks for the Building, Exchanging, Copy Paste and Destruction gadgets.[8]
Step 1: Building Gadget
Start with the Building Gadget. It places a large number of blocks at once, and it is the gadget you need for filling in air, which the Exchanging Gadget cannot do.[2][3]

Give it some energy, then Shift right-click a block to choose what to build with. The default mode is Build to Me. Look at a block and you'll see a ghostly preview. A red overlay means you're missing items or energy. Right click to place. In this pack it costs 50 energy per block (power.building_gadget.baseCost) and holds up to 500,000 (power.building_gadget.maxPower).[2][9]
Step 2: Exchanging Gadget
Next, make the Exchanging Gadget. It swaps one set of blocks for another, but it can't replace air. It works like the builder: Shift right-click to pick the target block, and its default mode is Surface. You can enchant it with silk touch. In this pack it costs 100 energy per block (power.exchanging_gadget.baseCost) with a maximum of 500,000 (power.exchanging_gadget.maxPower).[3][9]

Step 3: Copy Paste Gadget and Template Manager
The Copy Paste Gadget replicates structures. Right click one corner, then Shift right-click the opposite corner, and a green outline appears. Switch to paste mode and right click to place the copy. Copying is free, and pasting costs 50 energy per block (power.copypaste_gadget.baseCost). Its maximum is 1,000,000 (power.copypaste_gadget.maxPower).[4][9]

Step 4: Destruction and Cut Paste Gadgets
The Destruction Gadget clears a large area, and the blocks it clears are voided. It costs 200 energy per block (power.destruction_gadget.baseCost) with a maximum of 1,000,000 (power.destruction_gadget.maxPower).[5][9]

The Cut Paste Gadget moves a structure instead of copying it. Its cost is checked when you cut and charged when you paste, at 50 energy per block (power.cutpaste_gadget.baseCostNew). Its maximum is 5,000,000 (power.cutpaste_gadget.maxPower).[9][12]

How does Building Gadgets 2 work?
9 parts
Power
Every gadget in this mod needs Forge Energy (FE) for most of what it does, so charge it before you start. Many mods can charge items with FE. The in-game guide also points to a separate charging mod if you have nothing else.[6]
The pack's config sets a base cost per block and a maximum power for each gadget. These are the values in this pack:[9]
- Building Gadget: 50 per block placed (power.building_gadget.baseCost), with a maximum of 500,000 (power.building_gadget.maxPower).[9]
- Exchanging Gadget: 100 per block exchanged (power.exchanging_gadget.baseCost), with a maximum of 500,000 (power.exchanging_gadget.maxPower).[9]
- Copy Paste Gadget: 50 per block pasted (power.copypaste_gadget.baseCost), and copying is free. The maximum is 1,000,000 (power.copypaste_gadget.maxPower).[4][9]
- Cut Paste Gadget: 50 per block (power.cutpaste_gadget.baseCostNew). It is checked when you cut and charged when you paste. The maximum is 5,000,000 (power.cutpaste_gadget.maxPower). The older power.cutpaste_gadget.baseCost option is marked as legacy and no longer used.[9][12]
- Destruction Gadget: 200 per block destroyed (power.destruction_gadget.baseCost), with a maximum of 1,000,000 (power.destruction_gadget.maxPower).[9]
The maximum distance you can build at is 32 blocks in this pack (general.rayTraceRange), and the option accepts values from 1 to 64.[9]
Settings, range and anchoring
Hold the settings menu key (default 'g') to open a gadget's settings. Each gadget has different settings, and the same menu is where you pick building modes.[2][6]
The building and exchanging gadgets have a range setting that controls how many blocks are affected. Each mode treats it a little differently, but it generally describes an area. In Horizontal Row mode, a range of 3 covers 3 blocks in total, one on each side of the block you look at. For walls, a range of 3 builds a 3x3 wall, and even numbers change the height slightly.[13]
Anchor locks in the block you are looking at, so you can move and look around freely and still right click to build. If you change the range, it may not take effect until you remove and replace the anchor.[14]
Building and exchanging
With the Building Gadget, make sure it has energy, then shift right-click a block to choose what to build with. The default mode is Build to Me. You see a ghostly preview of the blocks, and a red overlay means you are missing items or energy for them. When you right click, items are taken from your inventory, and any block you lack the item for is skipped.[2]
The Exchanging Gadget works the same way, but it swaps existing blocks and cannot replace air (use the Building Gadget for that). Its default mode is Surface. Items for the removed blocks are returned to you, and you can enchant the gadget with silk touch. Without silk touch, grass returns dirt, for example.[3]
Some modes work on both gadgets, such as Surface, Grid, Horizontal Row and Vertical Column. In Surface mode, fuzzy mode lets the gadget target any blocks instead of only ones matching what you look at. On the exchanger, connected mode only swaps blocks connected to the ones you look at. Several modes also react to the 'place on top' toggle, and its effect differs per mode.[15][16][17][18][19]
Copy, cut and paste
For the Copy Paste Gadget, set 'copy' mode, right click one corner of a structure, then shift right-click the opposite corner. A green outline appears. Switch to 'paste' mode to see a preview, then right click to place it. The block you first right clicked is the structure's starting point. Pasting takes the needed items from your inventory and skips blocks you lack items for. The 'material list' option in the settings menu shows what you have and what you need.[4]
The Adjust Placement window in the settings menu lets you fine-tune the start and end blocks of the copy area. You can also switch to absolute world coordinates. Paste mode has a similar window for the starting block's position. Rotate turns a copy or cut structure around its starting point.[4][20]
The Cut Paste Gadget works much the same way, but its outline is red. Nothing is removed until you click the 'cut' button in the settings menu, and pasting needs no items because it reuses the blocks you removed. Block-entity data moves with the structure, including chest contents and block configurations.[12]
Paste Replace is available only on the Copy Paste and Cut Paste gadgets. When it is off, pastes only overwrite blocks you could normally replace, like water and tall grass, which can make blocks get 'lost' with the Cut Paste Gadget. When it is on, the paste replaces any block in the world, including air. Replaced blocks are voided and drop nothing.[21]
Destruction
The Destruction Gadget clears a large area, and the cleared blocks are voided. Set the area in the settings menu relative to the block and face you are looking at, then right click a block to remove everything highlighted. Undoing returns the voided blocks to the world without taking items from your inventory.[5]
Undo
Undo reverses the last task your gadget did and remembers the last 10 actions. You can use a hotkey or the settings menu. When you undo an exchange, you need the necessary items in your inventory. For example, to undo grass into stone bricks, you must have grass.[3][7]
Inventories and fluids
Turn on 'bind inventory' in the gadget's settings, then shift right-click a chest or other inventory. A blue box confirms the bind, and shift right-clicking a non-inventory block, like grass, disconnects it. You can also bind to an Applied Energistics 2 system through its wireless access point, and the gadget then has unlimited range.[22]
Gadgets can also work with fluids. Raytrace Fluids must be enabled to select a fluid with shift right-click. When it is on, exchangers can swap out fluids and builders can build on top of them. When it is off, gadgets ignore fluids and build on the blocks behind them. To place fluids you need a bucket with that fluid, or a tank from a mod such as Mekanism. The Copy Paste Gadget handles fluids too. When undoing or exchanging fluids, the gadget looks for somewhere to put the fluid, like an empty bucket or tank, and voids it if it finds none.[23][24]
Templates
The Template Manager saves structures from the Copy Paste Gadget. Put the gadget in the top slot and paper in the bottom slot, then click 'Save' to turn the paper into a template. A render of the structure appears that you can pan, spin and zoom. 'Load' copies a template's structure back onto the gadget, and the render button toggles to a materials list.[10]
Templates can be named. 'Copy' puts a json string on your clipboard that you can share outside Minecraft. A friend copies the same string, then clicks 'paste' in this GUI with paper in the bottom slot to replicate your structure.[10]
Pack recipe changes
The pack changed the crafting recipes for the Cut Paste Gadget and the Destruction Gadget, so they differ from the mod's own recipes. Here are the in-pack recipes:[11]

How do you progress through Building Gadgets 2?
2 parts
In this pack the quest book has one quest for these gadgets, "Building Gadget" quest, in the "Useful mods and Items" chapter (chapter 3 of 44). Its tasks ask for the Building Gadget, the Exchanging Gadget, the Copy Paste Gadget and the Destruction Gadget. The Cut Paste Gadget and the Template Manager are not among those tasks.[8][11]
Before you start, remember that every gadget needs Forge Energy (FE) for most of what it does. Get a way to charge items first, or the gadgets will just sit there.[6]
Gadgets with the mod's own recipes
The Building Gadget, the Exchanging Gadget, the Copy Paste Gadget and the Template Manager are crafted with the mod's recipes as they are, with no pack changes. These are your natural first stops.[11]

The Exchanging Gadget swaps one set of blocks for another but cannot replace air, so keep the Building Gadget for placing into empty space. The Copy Paste Gadget replicates structures: you mark opposing corners of the structure, then switch to paste mode.[2][3][4]
Gadgets the pack changed
The Destruction Gadget and the Cut Paste Gadget both have recipes that the pack changed, so don't rely on the mod's default recipes if you know them from elsewhere. Use the recipes below. The Destruction Gadget is the only one of these that the quest asks for.[8][11]

How does Building Gadgets 2 work with other mods?
3 parts
Building Gadgets 2 connects to the rest of the pack in three ways: two of its recipes are changed by the pack, its quest sits in a chapter of useful mods, and the gadgets can work with storage and tank mods.[8][11][22][23]
Pack-changed recipes
The pack changed the crafting recipes for the Cut Paste Gadget and the Destruction Gadget. Both use Infinity 5, an item that does not come from Building Gadgets 2 itself, so you will need to get that first.[11]

In the quest book
The "Building Gadget" quest quest is in the chapter "Useful mods and Items", chapter 3 of 44 in the book, which has 37 quests. It asks for the Building Gadget, Exchanging Gadget, Copy Paste Gadget and Destruction Gadget. The Cut Paste Gadget is not one of its tasks.[8]
Other quests in the same chapter cover items from other mods, such as "Construction Wand" quest and "Tool Belt" quest.[8]
Working with other mods
- Power: the gadgets need Forge Energy (FE) for most of their functions, and the mod's own guide says many mods can charge items with FE.[6]
- Applied Energistics 2: a gadget can bind to an AE2 system through the system's wireless access point. The gadget then has unlimited range, so you don't need range upgrades.[22]
- Tanks: to place fluids you normally need a bucket with the fluid in it, but tanks from mods like Mekanism can be used as well.[23]
Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Building Gadgets 2?
The pack's quest book gives Building Gadgets 2 one quest, in the chapter "Useful mods and Items".[8]
The quest is "Building Gadget" quest. Its tasks ask for these items:[8]
- Task item: Building Gadget[8]
- Task item: Exchanging Gadget[8]
- Task item: Copy Paste Gadget[8]
- Task item: Destruction Gadget[8]
The quest has no description text of its own. The task is only to have the items, so there is nothing to build or place for it.[8]
The same chapter also has "Construction Wand" quest, which asks for the Construction Wand item from a different mod, so don't confuse the two.[8]
Which Building Gadgets 2 config options matter?
2 parts
Everything you'll want to tweak for Building Gadgets 2 lives in one file, config/buildinggadgets2-common.toml. It covers how far you can build and how much power each gadget costs and can store. The values below are exactly what this pack sets.[9]
Build range
general.rayTraceRange is the maximum distance you can build at. This pack sets it to 32, and the option accepts anything from 1 to 64.[9]
Power cost and capacity
Each gadget has a base cost per block and a maximum power. Every one of these options must be above 0. Here is how the pack sets them.[9]
- Building Gadget: power.building_gadget.baseCost is 50 per block placed, and power.building_gadget.maxPower is 500,000.[9]
- Exchanging Gadget: power.exchanging_gadget.baseCost is 100 per block exchanged, and power.exchanging_gadget.maxPower is 500,000.[9]
- Copy and Paste Gadget: power.copypaste_gadget.baseCost is 50 per block pasted (copying is free), and power.copypaste_gadget.maxPower is 1,000,000.[9]
- Cut and Paste Gadget: power.cutpaste_gadget.baseCostNew is 50 per block, and power.cutpaste_gadget.maxPower is 5,000,000, the biggest power store of the gadgets listed here.[9]
- Destruction Gadget: power.destruction_gadget.baseCost is 200 per block destroyed, and power.destruction_gadget.maxPower is 1,000,000.[9]
