What is TorchMaster?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide
TorchMaster is a small, focused mod that gives you blocks for controlling where mobs can spawn. The headline item is the Mega Torch, a special torch that stops mob spawning in a configurable radius around it, and the mod also includes other spawn-control blocks like the Dread Lamp.[1]
The idea comes from RWTema's Extra Utilities 1, and the modern version is built for multiple loaders. This pack ships the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1, version 21.1.5-beta, which has been part of the pack since a very early build.[1][2]
Who it's for
If you're tired of mobs creeping into the dark corners of your base, your mob farm's collection area, or a sprawling machine room you don't want to light up block by block, TorchMaster is the tidy answer. One torch covers an area instead of you spamming light sources everywhere.[1]
What it does not block
The Mega Torch is only meant to stop "natural" spawning from low light levels. Mob spawners keep working, and the mod includes special handling for vanilla spawners so they aren't affected. Spawners from other mods are expected to work too, so you can safely park a Mega Torch near a spawner-based farm without shutting it down.[1]
This mod sits outside the pack's main progression. It isn't on the ATM Star path and there are no quests covering it, so treat it as a quality-of-life convenience you pick up whenever your base gets big enough to need it.[2]
Unverified The exact radius values, recipes and config keys for the Mega Torch and Dread Lamp in this pack aren't covered by the available sources. Check the in-game recipe viewer and the mod's config file to confirm the values this pack uses. This site does hold FTB StoneBlock 4's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
How do you get started with TorchMaster?
4 parts
TorchMaster is all about controlling mob spawning with simple blocks. The Mega Torch stops natural spawning of hostile monsters in a big radius around it, and the Dread Lamp does the same job for passive animals. In this pack both reach 64 blocks in each direction, measured as a cube with the block at the center, and that matches the mod default.[1][3][4]
Here are the items with in-pack recipes, in the order I'd make them.[5]
Dread Lamp
The Dread Lamp prevents natural spawning of passive animals like squids, bats or ocelots around it. Its radius is set by General.dreadLampRadius, which is 64 in this pack.[3][4]

Feral Flare Lantern
The Feral Flare Lantern places invisible lights. It has its own screen for light placement, where you choose whether it only lights spaces it can see or also spaces behind walls.[3]

The pack keeps the mod defaults for how it behaves:[4]
- General.feralFlareRadius is 16, the radius in which it tries to place lights.[4]
- General.feralFlareMinLightLevel is 10, the target minimum light level to place lights for.[4]
- General.feralFlareTickRate is 5, so it tries to place lights every 5th tick.[4]
- General.feralFlareLanternLightCountHardcap is 255, the maximum number of invisible lights one lantern can place.[4]
Frozen Pearl
The Frozen Pearl clears residual lights from a Feral Flare Lantern, so it's your cleanup tool once you've lit an area. Each light it removes uses one charge, and the pack gives it 1,024 durability, the same as the mod default.[3][4]

Good to know early
- The Mega Torch only blocks natural spawns, such as those from low light levels, because General.blockOnlyNaturalSpawns is true in this pack. Set it to false and the Mega Torch and Dread Lamp also block spawner spawns.[3][4]
- General.blockVillageSieges is true, so the Mega Torch also stops village sieges by zombies.[3][4]
How does TorchMaster work?
7 parts
TorchMaster is all about controlling mob spawning with a few simple blocks. You place one, and it stops certain spawns in a big area around it. There are no machines, power or fluids to deal with here, so the mechanics come down to what each block blocks, how far it reaches, and which config options change that.[1]
Mega Torch
The Mega Torch prevents natural spawning of hostile monsters in a big radius around it. It is meant to stop only natural spawning from low light levels, and mob spawners should keep working.[1][3]
In this pack the radius is 64 blocks in each direction, measured as a cube with the torch at its centre (General.megaTorchRadius). That is the same as the mod default, so the pack has not changed it. Within the mod's range display screen you can see the effective range in blocks for each direction.[3][4]
Dread Lamp
The Dread Lamp works the same way but for passive animals. It prevents natural spawning of things like squids, bats or ocelots in a big radius around the lamp. Its radius is General.dreadLampRadius, which is 64 in this pack, again the mod default and again a cube centred on the lamp.[3][4]
Crafting Shaped

What the pack's config does to spawning
- General.blockOnlyNaturalSpawns is true. The torch and lamp only block natural spawns, such as those from low light levels. If you set it to false, they would also block spawns from spawners.[3][4]
- General.blockVillageSieges is true, so the Mega Torch also blocks village sieges by zombies.[3][4]
- General.lycanitesMobsBlockAll is true, so the Mega Torch blocks all natural spawn attempts from Lycanites Mobs inside its radius.[4]
- General.aggressiveSpawnChecks is false. Turning it on makes the spawn check more aggressive, effectively overriding the CheckSpawn results of other mods.[4]
- General.beginnerTooltips is true, which shows additional information in the tooltip of certain items and blocks.[4]
Changing which mobs get blocked
Both blocks have an override list, and in this pack both lists are empty. General.megaTorchEntityBlockListOverrides changes what the Mega Torch blocks, and General.dreadLampEntityBlockListOverrides does the same for the Dread Lamp.[4]
- A + prefix adds an entity to the list, which denies its spawns. For example, "+minecraft:zombie" blocks zombies.[4]
- A - prefix removes an entity from the list, which allows its spawns. For example, "-minecraft:creeper" allows creepers.[4]
- Each entry needs quotes, entries are separated by commas, and the whole thing is wrapped in [ and ]. Multiple entries look like ["+minecraft:pig", "-gaia:dryad"].[4]
Feral Flare Lantern
The Feral Flare Lantern places invisible lights. Its screen has a Light placement setting for line of sight. With it enabled, the lantern only lights spaces it can see, so lights are not placed behind walls. With it disabled, the lantern lights spaces even behind walls and does not need a clear view.[3]

Recipe id: torchmaster:feral_flare_lantern
The Feral Flare Lantern uses this crafting recipe in the pack.
These are the pack's values for how the lantern behaves, and all of them match the mod defaults:[4]
- General.feralFlareRadius is 16, the radius in which the lantern tries to place lights.[3][4]
- General.feralFlareMinLightLevel is 10, the target minimum light level it places lights for.[3][4]
- General.feralFlareTickRate is 5, which controls how often the lantern tries to place lights. A value of 1 would mean every tick, so 5 means every 5th tick.[4]
- General.feralFlareLanternLightCountHardcap is 255, the maximum number of invisible lights one lantern can place. Setting it to 0 disables light placement.[4]
Frozen Pearl
The Frozen Pearl clears residual lights from a Feral Flare Lantern. Each light it removes costs one charge, and its durability in this pack is 1,024 (General.frozenPearlDurability), the same as the mod default. Setting that option to 0 disables durability.[3][4]

Debug commands
The mod also has commands that dump entities and torches to the log file. The game confirms each one with a message saying the entities or torches have been dumped to the log file.[3]
How do you progress through TorchMaster?
3 parts
TorchMaster keeps things simple in this pack. The recipe dump lists the Dread Lamp, the Feral Flare Lantern and the Frozen Pearl, and each one is a shaped crafting recipe that comes from the mod itself.[5]
None of these recipes uses another TorchMaster item as an ingredient, so there is no upgrade ladder to climb. You can make any of them as soon as you have its ingredients. Here is each recipe as the pack has it.[5]

How does TorchMaster work with other mods?
1 part
The one place the pack ties TorchMaster to another mod is a recipe it adds itself. It runs through Custom Machinery and links the Mega Torch with items from Ars Nouveau.[5]
Custom Machine (custommachinery)
Recipe id: ftb:megatorch_from_magelight
Added by the pack as a Custom Machinery recipe. It uses the Mega Torch, the Magelight Torch, Archwood Planks and a diamond.
Since this recipe is pack-made, you will not find it in the mod's own defaults. It only exists in this pack, so check the recipe block above rather than assuming it matches a standalone TorchMaster install.[5]
Spawners from other mods
The mod's author says the Mega Torch is meant to block only natural spawning from low light levels, and that mob spawners should still work. That includes spawners from other mods, according to the author. If you hit a mod where this does not hold, the author asks for a ticket on the mod's GitHub repo.[1]
Which TorchMaster config options matter?
4 parts
TorchMaster's settings all live in one file, and this pack doesn't touch the numeric ones. Every value that the config lists with a mod default is set to exactly that default, so what you read in the mod's own docs is what you get here.[4]
Mega torch and dread lamp
- General.megaTorchRadius is 64. It's measured in each direction as a cube, with the torch at the center. That matches the mod default.[4]
- General.dreadLampRadius is also 64, again a cube centered on the lamp and again the mod default.[4]
- General.blockOnlyNaturalSpawns is true. The mega torch only stops natural spawns, meaning the ones from low light levels. Setting it to false would also block spawns from spawners.[1][4]
- General.blockVillageSieges is true, so the mega torch also blocks zombie village sieges.[4]
- General.lycanitesMobsBlockAll is true, so the mega torch blocks all natural spawn attempts from Lycanites Mobs inside its radius.[4]
- General.aggressiveSpawnChecks is false. Turning it on makes the spawn check more aggressive and overrides the results of other mods' spawn checks.[4]
Block list overrides
General.megaTorchEntityBlockListOverrides and General.dreadLampEntityBlockListOverrides are both empty in this pack. That means neither the mega torch nor the dread lamp has a custom block list on top of the mod's internal ones.[4]
If you want to change that, a + prefix adds an entity to the block list and a - prefix removes it. Each entry goes in quotes inside square brackets, for example ["+minecraft:zombie"] to block zombies or ["-minecraft:creeper"] to allow creepers.[4]
Feral flare and frozen pearl
- General.feralFlareRadius is 16. This is the radius in which the feral flare tries to place lights, and it's the mod default.[4]
- General.feralFlareMinLightLevel is 10, which is the target minimum light level the flare places lights for. That's the mod default too.[4]
- General.feralFlareTickRate is 5, so the flare tries to place lights every 5th tick. Mod default.[4]
- General.feralFlareLanternLightCountHardcap is 255, the maximum number of invisible lights a feral flare lantern can place. Setting it to 0 disables light placement. This is the mod default.[4]
- General.frozenPearlDurability is 1,024. Each light the frozen pearl removes uses one charge, and setting it to 0 disables durability. Mod default again.[4]
Tooltips
General.beginnerTooltips is true, so certain items and blocks show extra information in their tooltips. Leave it on while you're learning the mod.[4]
What changed in TorchMaster between versions?
4 parts
FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships TorchMaster 21.1.11, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since StoneBlock 4 1.0.0 or earlier. I have no pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs.[6]
21.1.11 (the version in your pack)
- Fixed a NullPointerException crash when hovering a button on the Feral Flare Lantern or the Megatorch/Dreadlamp.[7]
21.1.10: the big feature update
- Mega torches can now be waterlogged. Dread lamps are excluded, because invisible lights cannot be placed underwater for now.[8]
- The Feral Flare Lantern gets line of sight support. Right click a lantern in the world to configure it. With it off (the default), the lantern places lights anywhere in its working range. With it on, it won't try to place lights behind walls.[8]
- Dread Lamps and Megatorches get a volume renderer overlay with a color cycler. Right click in the world to open the simple config menu. The visualization is per-client, and different colors help you tell volumes apart in different surroundings. It draws the big volume box plus a small 1-block box around the torch, so you can see the torch through blocks.[8]
- Invisible light blockstate warnings in the log during startup are fixed.[8]
21.1.5 to 21.1.8
- 21.1.8 fixed the Frozen Pearl recipe.[9]
- 21.1.7 added support for preventing phantoms from spawning through the player insomnia mechanic.[9]
- 21.1.6 re-added the Frozen Pearl, which removes residual lights from the Feral Flare Lantern.[9]
- 21.1.5 turned off TorchMaster's spawn logging in the debug log by default, to reduce potential wear on storage drives.[10]
Earlier releases
- 21.1.4 added a torchmaster command that was missing from previous versions.[10]
- 21.1.3 fixed spam related to config auto fixing on NeoForge.[10]
- 21.1.1 re-enabled mob spawn blocking during chunk generation inside blocking volumes, fixed spawner blocking not working when blockOnlyNaturalSpawns is set to false, and fixed the Feral Flare Lantern not rendering its stand.[10]
- 21.1.0 improved the blocking logic and fixed a crash when architectury is installed.[10]
- 21.0.1 fixed invisible light blocks not being replaceable by other blocks and updated the mod to Minecraft 1.21.1.[10]
- 21.0.0 was the first release for Minecraft 1.21.[10]
