TorchMaster is a mod in All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.1.0, where it is version 21.1.13. Control Mob Spawning with simple to use Blocks like the Mega Torch or the Dread Lamp (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is TorchMaster?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

TorchMaster is a small, focused mod that gives you blocks for controlling where mobs can spawn. The headline item is the Mega Torch, a special torch that stops mob spawning in a configurable radius around it, and the mod also includes other spawn-control blocks like the Dread Lamp.[1]

The idea comes from RWTema's Extra Utilities 1, and the modern version is built for multiple loaders. This pack ships the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1, version 21.1.5-beta, which has been part of the pack since a very early build.[1][2]

Who it's for

If you're tired of mobs creeping into the dark corners of your base, your mob farm's collection area, or a sprawling machine room you don't want to light up block by block, TorchMaster is the tidy answer. One torch covers an area instead of you spamming light sources everywhere.[1]

What it does not block

The Mega Torch is only meant to stop "natural" spawning from low light levels. Mob spawners keep working, and the mod includes special handling for vanilla spawners so they aren't affected. Spawners from other mods are expected to work too, so you can safely park a Mega Torch near a spawner-based farm without shutting it down.[1]

Tip: Because the torch leaves spawners alone, it pairs nicely with any spawner farm: light-level mobs stop appearing around your build while your farm keeps producing.[1]

This mod sits outside the pack's main progression. It isn't on the ATM Star path and there are no quests covering it, so treat it as a quality-of-life convenience you pick up whenever your base gets big enough to need it.[2]

Unverified The exact radius values, recipes and config keys for the Mega Torch and Dread Lamp in this pack aren't covered by the available sources. Check the in-game recipe viewer and the mod's config file to confirm the values this pack uses. This site does hold All the Mods 10: To the Sky's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you get started with TorchMaster?

3 parts

Torchmaster is all about controlling what spawns around your base. In the pack's quest book it sits in the Building Tips chapter: the "Torchmaster" quest quest comes right after the lighting quest a quest in "Building Tips", which comes after the Decoration quest. The quest calls these items super helpful and says you should definitely check them out.[3]

Step one: make a light source, the Feral Flare Lantern

Start with Feral Flare Lantern. It is the actual light source of the mod. The quest says it places invisible light sources around 20 blocks or more around it.[3][4]

The lantern has its own screen with a line of sight setting. You can have it only light spaces it can see, or let it light spaces even behind walls.[4]

Step two: stop hostile spawns with the Mega Torch

Next, make the Mega Torch. It doesn't emit light, but the quest says it blocks all hostile mob spawns within 64 blocks of it, which is handy if you play with Night Vision. It only stops natural spawning: the project page says mob spawners should still work.[1][3][4]

Optional extras

The Dread Lamp does the opposite of the Mega Torch: the quest says it blocks passive mob spawns in the same area. Its tooltip gives squids, bats and ocelots as examples.[3][4]

Tip: The mod also has a Torchmaster Volume Range Display screen with a toggle. It shows the effective range in each direction in blocks, so you can check what a torch or lamp actually covers.[4]

How does TorchMaster work?

6 parts

TorchMaster is all about controlling mob spawning and lighting with a handful of placeable blocks. The mod describes itself as a way to control mob spawning with simple blocks like the Mega Torch and the Dread Lamp.[1][4]

Mega Torch: stopping hostile spawns

The Mega Torch prevents natural spawning of hostile monsters in a big radius around the torch. It is meant to block natural spawning from low light levels, while mob spawners should keep working. The mod has special handling for vanilla mob spawners, and spawners from other mods should work as well.[1][4]

The mod's config has an option that changes this. If the option for blocking only natural spawns is disabled, the Mega Torch and the Dread Lamp also prevent spawns from Minecraft spawners. A separate option makes the Mega Torch prevent village sieges by zombies when it is enabled.[4]

Dread Lamp: stopping passive spawns

The Dread Lamp does the same job for passive animals. It prevents natural spawning of animals like squids, bats or ocelots in a big radius around the lamp.[4]

Both the Mega Torch and the Dread Lamp have an entity block list override option in the config, so you can customize which mobs are affected. The config tooltip points to the Torchmaster wiki on GitHub for the details.[4]

Seeing the range

The mod includes a screen called Torchmaster Volume Range Display. It shows the effective range in each direction in blocks, and it has a toggle to turn the range display on or off. Use it to check how much ground a torch or lamp covers.[4]

Feral Flare Lantern: automatic lighting

The Feral Flare Lantern places invisible lights. Its screen is titled Light placement and has a line of sight setting. With line of sight enabled, the lantern only lights spaces it can see, so lights are not placed behind walls. With it disabled, the lantern lights spaces even behind walls and does not need a clear view.[4]

The mod's config also controls how the lantern behaves. You can set how many lights it may place in total (a hard cap), the minimum light level before it tries to place a light, the circular radius in which it places lights, and how often it attempts to place them.[4]

Watch out: Don't set the Feral Flare Lantern's total light cap too high. The config tooltip warns that doing so may corrupt your world.[4]

Debug commands

The mod also adds troubleshooting commands. A command dumps entities to the log file, and another dumps torches to the log file.[4]

Unverified The exact spawn-blocking radius of the Mega Torch and Dread Lamp, and the values this pack uses for the Feral Flare Lantern settings, are set in the mod's config. The sources here do not show those values.

How do you progress through TorchMaster?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

TorchMaster is a small mod in this pack, and there's no quest line pointing you toward it, so progression here is driven entirely by what each item costs to craft. The pack ships three craftable TorchMaster items, and all three use the mod's own recipes rather than pack-specific overrides, so nothing has been made cheaper or more expensive than the mod intends.[5]

Tier 1: Feral Flare Lantern

The Feral Flare Lantern is the cheapest of the three and the natural first craft. It only asks for early-game materials you'll have long before you touch diamonds, which makes it the entry point into the mod.[5]

Tier 2: Mega Torch

The Mega Torch is the mid-tier step up. It's a bigger investment than the lantern, so plan on making it once you've got a diamond and some gold banked rather than on your first night out.[5]

Tier 3: Dread Lamp

The Dread Lamp is the last of the three. Its recipe leans on materials you gather from deeper mining trips, so it slots in after you've established a base and have obsidian on hand.[5]

Tip: All three are plain crafting table recipes with no machines or intermediate parts in between, so you can jump straight to whichever one you can afford instead of crafting them in order.[5]

Unverified The in-game effects of each item, including spawn-blocking ranges, light radius and any config options that tune them in this pack, aren't covered by the sources used for this page. Check the item tooltips and the pack's TorchMaster config in-game before you build around a specific radius.

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use TorchMaster?

2 parts

Torchmaster has one quest in the pack, and it sits in the Building Tips chapter, which has 67 quests. The quest is "Torchmaster" quest, and it works as a short introduction to what the mod adds.[3]

What the quest tells you

The quest calls these items super helpful and tells you to check them out. It describes three things. The Feral Flare Lantern is the actual light source, and it places invisible light sources around 20 blocks or more around it.[3]

  • Feral Flare Lantern: the light source. It places invisible light sources around 20 blocks or more around it.[3]
  • Mega Torch: it doesn't emit light, but it blocks all hostile mob spawns within 64 blocks of it. The quest says it's useful if you use Night Vision.[3]
  • Dread Lamp: the opposite of the Mega Torch. It blocks passive mob spawns in the same area.[3]

Where it sits in the chapter

The chapter starts with "Building Tips!" quest. From there, "Decoration!" quest comes next, and it leads into a quest in "Building Tips". That quest is the lighting entry of the chapter, and it accepts any one item from a list of light sources, including a torch, a lantern, glowstone, a sea lantern or one of the copper bulbs.[3]

The Torchmaster quest comes right after that lighting quest. It shares that spot with several other lighting quests that follow it.[3]

The lighting quest explains why a light matters: it keeps monsters from spawning, helps you see, and adds color to your builds. The Torchmaster quest builds on that by adding light that places itself and spawn control for mobs.[3]

Which TorchMaster config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.11 guide

TorchMaster's headline setting is the spawn-blocking radius: the mod's torch prevents mob spawning in a configurable radius around itself, so that's the value you'd reach for if you want a bigger or smaller protected area.[1]

Worth knowing before you go hunting through configs: the torch is only meant to block "natural" spawning from low light levels. Mob spawners are expected to keep working, since the mod includes special handling for vanilla spawners and spawners from other mods are intended to work too. No config toggle changes that design.[1]

Unverified The exact config keys, their defaults, and whether this pack changes any of them could not be confirmed from the available material, so treat any specific radius number you see elsewhere as unverified for this pack and check in-game before building around it.

What changed in TorchMaster between versions?

3 parts

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships TorchMaster 21.1.12, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. TorchMaster has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier. This history comes from the mod's own changelog, and I have no pack changelog entries for this mod.[6]

Latest changes (21.1.10 to 21.1.12)

One thing to keep in mind: the changelog describes the Dread Lamp waterlogging limit below as applying for now, so it may change in later versions.[7]

  • 21.1.12 fixes an out of bounds exception with the Feral Flare Lantern.[7]
  • 21.1.11 fixes a crash (a NullPointerException) when hovering a button on the Feral Flare Lantern or the Megatorch/Dreadlamp.[7]
  • 21.1.10 lets Mega Torches be waterlogged. Dread Lamps are excluded, because invisible lights cannot be placed underwater for now.[7]
  • 21.1.10 also adds line of sight support to the Feral Flare Lantern. Right click the lantern in the world to configure it. With line of sight off (the default) it places lights anywhere in its working range, and with it on it won't try to place lights behind walls.[7]
  • 21.1.10 adds a volume overlay with a color cycler for the Dread Lamp and Megatorch. Right click in the world to open the simple config menu. It is per-client, so it only changes what you see. It draws the big volume box plus a small 1-block box around the torch, so you can spot the torch through blocks.[7]
  • 21.1.10 also fixes invisible light blockstate warnings in the log at startup.[7]

Earlier changes (21.1.0 to 21.1.8)

  • 21.1.8 fixed the Frozen Pearl recipe. 21.1.6 had re-added the Frozen Pearl, which removes residual lights from the Feral Flare Lantern.[8]
  • 21.1.7 added support for preventing phantoms from spawning through the player insomnia mechanic.[8]
  • 21.1.5 turned off TorchMaster's spawn logging in the debug log by default, to reduce wear on storage drives. If you need it, launch the game with -Dtorchmaster.enableDebugLogging=1.[8]
  • 21.1.4 added a torchmaster command that was missing from previous versions. 21.1.3 fixed log spam from config auto fixing on NeoForge.[9]
  • 21.1.1 re-enabled mob spawn blocking during chunk generation inside blocking volumes, fixed spawner blocking when blockOnlyNaturalSpawns is set to false, and fixed the Feral Flare Lantern not rendering its stand.[9]
  • 21.1.0 improved the blocking logic and fixed a crash when Architectury is installed.[9]

First releases

Version 21.0.0 was the first release for Minecraft 1.21. Version 21.0.1 updated to Minecraft 1.21.1 and fixed invisible light blocks not being replaceable by other blocks.[9]

Tip: Several fixes in the changelog are marked as Fabric only, such as the village siege, warden and world joining crashes. The pack uses the NeoForge jar, so those don't affect you.[6][8][9]
