What is Step Crafter?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Step Crafter is an add-on for Refined Storage. It adds a Step Crafter and a Step Requester, which give you recursive crafting and a way to keep items in stock in your network.[1]

What it does

With the Step Crafter, you put in a pattern and Shift + Click it to set a minimum and a maximum amount. When the amount of that pattern's output stored in your network drops below the minimum, it crafts automatically until the maximum is restored.[1]

The Step Requester works from a resource instead of a pattern. You select the resource you want to maintain, then click to set its minimum, maximum and batch size. When the available amount falls below the minimum, it asks your autocrafters to produce that resource in batches until the maximum is reached.[1]

In this pack

The pack includes Step Crafter 1.21.1-0.1.8, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1.[2]

The mod's project page lists a Step Crafter Manager, a Step Requester Manager, starting Step Crafter autocrafting tasks from the Grid, and a Redstone Pulse to start crafts as planned features. These are only plans, so don't count on them in this version.[1]

How do you get started with Step Crafter?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Step Crafter adds a few blocks on top of Refined Storage that keep items in stock for you, so you don't have to queue crafts by hand. The recipes use Refined Storage parts, so get a basic Refined Storage network running first.[1][3]

First, make a Step Crafter

Start with the Step Crafter. It's the core of the mod, and both the Step Crafter Manager and the Step Crafting Monitor are crafted from it. It accepts patterns for recursive autocrafting and lets you set a minimum and a maximum. When the network's amount of a pattern's output drops below the minimum, it crafts until it reaches the maximum.[1][3][4]

To set it up, put a pattern in, then Shift + Click it to enter the minimum and maximum amounts.[1]

Next, make a Step Requester

The Step Requester works from resources instead of patterns. Select the resource you want to maintain and click it to configure the minimum, maximum and batch size. When the amount falls below the minimum, it requests Autocrafters to produce the item in batches until the maximum is reached.[1][4]

Add managers once you have several

After you've placed a few of them, the managers save you from walking around to each one. The Step Crafter Manager lets you manage all your Step Crafters from a single interface, and the Step Requester Manager does the same for Step Requesters. Each one is crafted from its matching base block, so make the Step Crafter or Step Requester first.[3][4]

Tip: Each Step Crafter and Step Requester has a toggle that controls whether you can manage it in its manager. If a machine is missing from the manager, check that toggle first.[4]

Watch and cancel crafts with the monitor

The Step Crafting Monitor displays the status of step crafting tasks and lets you cancel them in your storage network. It is crafted from a Step Crafter too.[3][4]

Speed things up with Slot Upgrades

The Slot Upgrade speeds up the Step Crafter. The speed multiplier applies per slot upgrade, using the formula: upgrade amount times speed multiplier, plus 1.[4]

Optional extras

The managers and the monitor can be recolored. In this pack you combine a dye with any manager or monitor of the matching kind, and the light blue recipe gives you the standard, undyed item. Here's the red Step Crafter Manager as an example.[3]

  • any step crafter manager
  • any red dye

If you use a Refined Storage Grid, the mod adds a tooltip that says ALT + click to stepcraft.[4]

How does Step Crafter work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Step Crafter plugs into Refined Storage and adds a Step Crafter and a Step Requester that keep your network stocked. Both watch how much of an item your network holds and start crafting when it runs low. The Step Crafter is built around recursive crafting, so it can follow a pattern through its intermediate steps.[1][4]

Step Crafter

You put a pattern into the Step Crafter, then Shift + Click it to set a minimum and a maximum. When the amount of that pattern's output stored in your network drops below the minimum, the Step Crafter crafts until the maximum is restored.[1][4]

  • An import toggle: when enabled, the Step Crafter tries to import the crafted components into the container it points at.[4]
  • A visibility toggle: when enabled, you can manage this Step Crafter in the Step Crafter Manager.[4]

Step Requester

The Step Requester works from resources instead of patterns. You select the resource you want to maintain, then click it to set a minimum, a maximum and a batch size. When the available amount falls below the minimum, the requester asks your autocrafters to produce it in batches of that size until the maximum is reached.[1][4]

Because it asks autocrafters to do the work, the resource needs to be something your network can already autocraft. Like the Step Crafter, it has a toggle for whether the Step Requester Manager can manage it.[4]

Managers and the monitor

  • The Step Crafter Manager lets you manage all your step crafters from a single interface. It has a search mode that searches by step crafter name.[4]
  • The Step Requester Manager does the same for your step requesters, with a search mode that searches by step requester name.[4]
  • The Step Crafting Monitor shows the status of step crafting tasks in your storage network and lets you cancel them.[4]

A Step Crafter or Step Requester only shows up in its manager if you leave its visibility toggle enabled.[4]

Colored variants

Both managers and the monitor come in dyed variants. Each is a shapeless recipe: one matching dye plus any item from the matching manager or monitor tag. For example, you can recolor a Step Crafter Manager like this:[3]

Crafting Shapeless

  • any step crafter manager
  • any black dye

Recipe id: stepcrafter:coloring/black_step_crafter_manager

Black dye plus any Step Crafter Manager gives the black variant.

The light blue dye recipes are different. In this pack's recipe dump they output the default Step Crafter Manager, Step Crafting Monitor and Step Requester Manager, so light blue is the base look rather than a separate item.[3]

Grid and power

The mod adds a Grid tooltip that reads "ALT + click to stepcraft", which is how step crafts are started from the Grid.[4]

The mod has separate energy usage settings for the Step Crafter, Step Requester, both managers, the Step Crafting Monitor and the Slot Upgrade. The Step Crafter also has a speed multiplier per slot upgrade, calculated as the number of speed upgrades times the multiplier, plus 1.[4]

There are also defaults for the minimum, maximum and batch size applied to newly configured resources.[4]

Unverified The pack's actual values for energy usage, the speed multiplier and the default minimum, maximum and batch size are set in this mod's config, and the sources here do not show them because no config files for this mod were available.

How do you progress through Step Crafter?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Step Crafter doesn't have tiers in the usual sense. In this pack it is a short chain of crafts, where the managers and the monitor are built from a base block. Every base recipe also uses Refined Storage components, so get your Refined Storage setup going before you start here.[3]

The crafting chain

The crafter side starts with the Step Crafter. It is the base block, and the crafter-side blocks need it as an ingredient.[3]

Once you have a Step Crafter, you can build the Step Crafter Manager and the Step Crafting Monitor from it.[3]

The requester side is its own branch. You craft the Step Requester first, and then use it to make the Step Requester Manager.[3]

Slot Upgrade

The Slot Upgrade has its own recipe and doesn't use the Step Crafter or the Step Requester as an ingredient.[3]

Dyeing your managers and monitors

The managers and the monitor can be dyed. Each coloring recipe is shapeless: you combine one dye with a block from the matching group, so a manager goes with the manager group, the monitor with the monitor group, and so on. A Step Crafter Manager, for example, can become a Red Step Crafter Manager.[3]

Crafting Shapeless

  • any step crafter manager
  • any red dye

Recipe id: stepcrafter:coloring/red_step_crafter_manager

The same shapeless pattern is used for the other dye colors.

Tip: Light blue is the odd one out. In this pack, the light blue coloring recipes output the plain Step Crafter Manager, Step Crafting Monitor and Step Requester Manager instead of a separate light blue version.[3]

How does Step Crafter work with other mods?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Step Crafter is built entirely around Refined Storage. The mod adds a Step Crafter and a Step Requester that give Refined Storage recursive crafting and the ability to keep items in stock. Every recipe the mod adds in this pack uses Refined Storage parts, so you'll need a working Refined Storage setup before you can build any of it.[1][3]

How it plugs into Refined Storage

  • The Step Crafter takes a pattern. Shift + Click the pattern to set a minimum and a maximum. When the network's stored amount of the pattern's output drops below the minimum, it crafts until the maximum is restored.[1]
  • The Step Requester lets you pick a resource and configure its minimum, maximum and batch size. When the available amount falls below the minimum, it asks autocrafters to produce it in batches until the maximum is reached.[1]

Recipes that use Refined Storage items

The Step Crafter is crafted from several Refined Storage components, including the Autocrafter. That makes sense, since it extends Refined Storage's autocrafting.[1][3]

The Step Requester follows the same idea, but it uses a Detector in its recipe instead of an Autocrafter.[3]

The pack also has recipes for the Step Crafter Manager and the Step Requester Manager. Each one is built from the matching base block, a Machine Casing and any glass block.[3]

The Slot Upgrade combines a Refined Storage Upgrade with Chest and Quartz Enriched Iron.[3]

Tip: Every Step Crafter recipe in the pack uses Quartz Enriched Iron and, except the Slot Upgrade, an Advanced Processor. Stock up on both before you start building.[3]

Unverified No quests in this pack involve Step Crafter, and no other mod's items appear in its recipes besides Refined Storage and the vanilla chest and glass. Any further integrations are unconfirmed.

Which Step Crafter config options matter?

3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Good news: this pack leaves every Step Crafter value at its mod default, so nothing here is a pack tweak. All the options live in stepCrafter.speedMultiplier's file, config/stepcrafter-common.toml, and the numbers below are exactly what you get in this pack.[5]

Crafting speed

stepCrafter.speedMultiplier is set to 14, the same as the mod default. It accepts any value above 0, so this is the option to raise or lower if you want your Step Crafters to work faster or slower.[5]

Energy usage

Each block and the slot upgrade has its own energy usage option. They all accept values from 0 up to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807, and in this pack every one sits at its mod default:[5]

Tip: Setting an energy usage option to 0 is allowed by the config range, so you can use that if you want a block to run without drawing power. This is your own change; the pack does not do it.[5]

Manager search and view

The two manager blocks each have a search mode and a view type. In this pack both managers use the search mode ALL and the view type VISIBLE.[5]

Unverified The sources do not say what unit the energy usage values use or what the search mode and view type values do in the manager screens, so check in game before relying on them.

What changed in Step Crafter between versions?

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Step Crafter 1.21.1-0.1.9, so every change listed below is already in your pack. The mod was first included in pack version 1.14.0 or earlier.[6]

I don't have pack changelog entries for this mod, so these notes come from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[7][8][9][10][11][12]

  • 0.1.9: Fixed Alt + Click not working inside Grid.[7]
  • 0.1.8: The default resource values for the Step Crafter and Step Requester can now be changed in the client-side configuration screen.[8]
  • 0.1.7: Improved Step Requester performance by adding a timeout on failed requested crafts.[9]
  • 0.1.6: Fixed a crash that sometimes happened when using inventory sorter mods.[10]
  • 0.1.5: Fixed a bug where saving a fluid filter in the Step Crafter or Step Requester incorrectly changed its min amount, max amount and batch size.[11]
  • 0.1.4: Added a new side button to the Step Crafter that controls whether crafted items are inserted into the pointed container. Also fixed various crashes.[12]
Tip: If you use an inventory sorter mod or fluid filters, these fixes (0.1.6 and 0.1.5) are already included in the version your pack runs.[6][10][11]
