What is Sophisticated Backpacks?
1 part
Sophisticated Backpacks adds the Backpack, higher-tier backpacks and a set of upgrade items. This pack includes version 3.26.2 of the mod.[1][2]
The pack's quest book puts all of this mod's quests in the logistics storage chapter. None of these quests has a title, so you follow them by their task items.[2]
Where it sits in the quest book
- The chain starts with "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest, which asks for the basic Backpack.[2]
- Two quests come after that one. a quest in "Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base. "Tier Upgrades" quest asks for any one of Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack, Diamond Backpack or Netherite Backpack.[2]
- Three quests come after the upgrade base quest. "Stack Upgrades" quest asks for any stack upgrade, from Stack Upgrade Starter Tier up to Stack Upgrade Omega Tier.[2]
- a quest in "Storage" asks for a Void Upgrade or an Advanced Void Upgrade.[2]
- "Pickup Upgrades" quest asks for a Pickup Upgrade, Advanced Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade or Advanced Magnet Upgrade.[2]
Unverified Whether the ATM Star path uses this mod is not shown by the sources here, and the quest chapter above does not mention it.
How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks gives you portable storage that you expand with upgrades. In this pack the recipes for the backpacks and their upgrades have been changed, so follow the recipe blocks below rather than what you remember from the mod's defaults. The quest book lays out a sensible order in its storage chapter, and this section follows it.[2][3]
Step 1: the basic Backpack
Everything starts with the Backpack. It is the first quest in the chapter ("Sophisticated Backpacks" quest), and the rest of the chapter unlocks from it.[2]

The pack changed this recipe from the mod's default.
Step 2: the Upgrade Base
Next, make the Upgrade Base (a quest in "Storage"). Many upgrades in the pack are crafted from it, including the starter stack upgrade, the pickup upgrade and the void upgrade.[2][3]

Step 3: choose where to go next
After the Backpack quest, the quest book offers a backpack tier quest. After the Upgrade Base quest it offers three more: stack, void and pickup or magnet. You can take them in any order, but here is the order I'd go in.[2]
- Upgrade the backpack itself ("Tier Upgrades" quest). The quest accepts a Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond or Netherite backpack. The first rung is the Copper Backpack, made from your basic Backpack.[2][3]
- Make a stack upgrade ("Stack Upgrades" quest). The easiest to start with is the Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, which is made from an Upgrade Base.[2][3]
- Make a pickup or magnet upgrade ("Pickup Upgrades" quest). The quest accepts the Pickup, Advanced Pickup, Magnet or Advanced Magnet upgrade.[2]
- Make a void upgrade (a quest in "Storage"). The quest accepts the Void Upgrade or the Advanced Void Upgrade.[2]

The backpack tiers chain together. The Iron Backpack can be made from the basic Backpack or from the Copper Backpack. The Gold Backpack is made from the Iron one, the Diamond Backpack from the Gold one, and the Netherite Backpack is a smithing upgrade of the Diamond one.[3]

Pickup, magnet and void
The Pickup Upgrade is crafted from an Upgrade Base, and the Magnet Upgrade is crafted from the Pickup Upgrade. The Advanced Magnet Upgrade magnets items into the backpack at a greater range and has more filtering options. The Advanced Void Upgrade voids the items selected in its filter.[3][4]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?
6 parts
A Sophisticated Backpack is not a machine on its own. Almost everything it does comes from upgrades that you slot into its upgrade tabs. Each upgrade adds one job, such as storing fluid, smelting, sucking up loot or feeding you. Once you know what each upgrade does, you can build the backpack you want.[4]
Storage: stacks, fluids and energy
Stack upgrades change how many stacks fit in each slot. Starter tier multiplies it by 1.5, and tiers 1 to 4 multiply it by 2, 4, 8 and 16. The Omega tier multiplies it by the maximum value, ×33,554,431. There are also stack downgrades that divide the number by 8, 16 or 32 (tiers 1 to 3).[4]
The Tank upgrade replaces part of the backpack's inventory with fluid storage. The Battery upgrade does the same with energy storage. The Pump upgrade moves fluids between the Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced version also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and it lets you filter which fluids are pumped. The XP Pump upgrade moves experience between the Tank upgrade and you.[4]
Moving items in and out
- Pickup Upgrade makes the backpack pick up items. The Magnet upgrade pulls items in from a range, and the advanced Magnet upgrade has a greater range.[3][4]
- Filter Upgrade filters items piped into and/or out of the backpack.[3][4]
- Deposit Upgrade deposits items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak right-click. The Restock upgrade works the other way and restocks the backpack from the inventory you sneak right-click.[3][4]
- Feeding Upgrade feeds you with food from the backpack. The Refill upgrade keeps a stack of chosen items topped up in your inventory.[3][4]
- The Void upgrade voids the items selected in its filter. In this pack, server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAlwaysEnabled is true, so the void upgrade is allowed to void always, not only on overflow.[4][5]
- Compacting Upgrade compacts items into their compressed variants, but only 2x2 recipes. The advanced version handles both 2x2 and 3x3.[3][4]
- The Tool Swapper upgrade swaps the item in your hand for the one that is effective on the block or entity you left-click. The Mob Catcher upgrade captures passive mobs into backpack storage slots with a sneak right-click, and the advanced version also captures hostile mobs.[4]

Configurable sizes and ranges
The pack keeps the mod defaults for the numbers below. The magnet range around the storage is set by server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange, which is 5 blocks.[5]
- server.advancedFilterUpgrade.filterSlots is 16, so the advanced Filter upgrade has 16 filter slots.[5]
- server.advancedFilterUpgrade.slotsInRow is 4, so those filter slots are shown 4 per row.[5]
- server.advancedRefillUpgrade.filterSlots is 12 filter slots for the advanced Refill upgrade.[5]
- server.advancedJukeboxUpgrade.numberOfSlots is 12 disc slots for the advanced Jukebox upgrade.[5]
Crafting and processing in an upgrade tab
Several upgrades put a workstation right in the backpack. Crafting Upgrade gives you a crafting table in an upgrade tab, Anvil Upgrade gives you an anvil, and the Stonecutter, Smithing and Sawmill upgrades are their own stations. The pack also has Chipped upgrades, one per Chipped workbench: Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade, Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade, Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade, Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade. Each one puts its Chipped workbench in an upgrade tab.[3][4]

For cooking there are two kinds. Smelting Upgrade and Blasting Upgrade put smelting and blasting in an upgrade tab, and the Smoking upgrade does the same for food. The auto versions, Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade, also automatically pull and push items.[3][4]
- server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier is 1 in this pack, which equals the speed of a vanilla furnace.[5]
- server.autoBlastingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier is also 1, the same vanilla furnace speed.[5]
- server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier is 1, which equals the rate at which a vanilla furnace uses fuel.[5]
- server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.inputFilterSlots is 8 input filter slots for the Auto-smelting upgrade.[5]
- server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.fuelFilterSlots is 4 fuel filter slots for the Auto-smelting upgrade.[5]
The pack changes how you craft the upgraded cooking versions. Auto-blasting and Auto-smoking are made from an Auto-smelting Upgrade, and both recipes are marked as changed by the pack.[3]

Protection and special upgrades
Everlasting Upgrade makes the backpack indestructible, so it can't despawn or fall into the void. The Inception upgrade lets you put backpacks inside the backpack. The Infinity upgrade makes all items infinite, but only admins can set infinite items and break or pick up the backpack. The Survival Infinity upgrade lets all players do that.[3][4]

Pack-specific server settings
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.chance is 0 in this pack. The mod default is 0.01, so mobs do not spawn with backpacks.[5]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance is also 0, down from the mod default of 0.5, so mobs do not drop backpacks when you kill them.[5]
- server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is false. Players can't open a backpack that another player is wearing by right-clicking their back, and this is turned off for everyone.[4][5]
- server.allBlockConnectionsDisallowed is true. Its description says this disallows all blocks from connecting to backpacks.[5]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks progression in this pack is two ladders: the backpack itself (copper up to netherite) and the upgrades you slot into it. Every recipe shown in the sources is marked as changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack versions.[3]
Following the quests
The quests live in the logistics storage chapter and form a small tree. Each quest accepts any one of the listed items, so a higher tier counts just as well as the first one.[2]
- Start with "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest, which asks for the Backpack.[2]
- Next comes a quest in "Storage", which asks for the Upgrade Base, the building block for most upgrades.[2][3]
- Alongside it, "Tier Upgrades" quest also follows the first quest and accepts any tiered backpack: Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack, Diamond Backpack or Netherite Backpack.[2]
- Once you have the Upgrade Base, three quests open up. "Stack Upgrades" quest covers the stack upgrades from Stack Upgrade Starter Tier through Stack Upgrade Omega Tier. a quest in "Storage" takes the Void Upgrade or Advanced Void Upgrade. "Pickup Upgrades" quest takes the pickup or magnet upgrades, basic or advanced.[2]
Backpack tiers
The base backpack is the entry point, and each metal tier builds on the one before it. The Iron Backpack is flexible: it has one recipe from the plain backpack and another from the Copper Backpack, so you can skip copper if you like. The Netherite Backpack uses a smithing-type recipe on top of the Diamond Backpack.[3]

Basic to advanced upgrades
Many upgrades have an advanced version that you craft from the basic one. In this pack the Advanced Pickup Upgrade, Advanced Void Upgrade, Advanced Compacting Upgrade, Advanced Deposit Upgrade, Advanced Feeding upgrade and Advanced Filter Upgrade all use the basic upgrade as their base. How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?
3 parts
In this pack, Sophisticated Backpacks connects to Chipped and to Sophisticated Storage through its recipes. The quest book doesn't link it to other mods.[2][3]
Chipped workstations as backpack upgrades
Sophisticated Backpacks has upgrades that put a Chipped workstation inside your backpack. They are the Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade, Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade, Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade, Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade.[3]
The pack has changed all of these recipes, so don't rely on the mod's defaults. Each one is a shaped crafting recipe built around the matching Chipped block and an Upgrade Base. Here are the exact in-pack versions.[3]

Sophisticated Storage and the World Engine
The pack adds its own Custom Machinery recipe under the id ftb:world_engine/sophisticatedstorage_controller. It involves the Deposit Upgrade and the Storage Controller, alongside Steel Plate and Diamond. Because the pack added it, you won't find it in either mod's default content.[3]

What the quests cover
The storage quest chapter only asks for items from this mod: the Backpack, the Upgrade Base, the metal backpack tiers, the stack upgrades, the void upgrades, and the pickup and magnet upgrades. None of its tasks use items from other mods.[2]
Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Sophisticated Backpacks?
3 parts
All of the Sophisticated Backpacks quests in this pack sit in one chapter, the logistics storage chapter. It is a small branching line that takes you from your first backpack to the upgrades. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so I will refer to them by their quest refs.[2]
First, get a backpack
The chain starts with "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest. It asks for a plain Backpack and has no prerequisite. Everything else in the chapter hangs off this quest.[2]
Next, two branches open up
Two quests come directly after the first one, so you can pick either of them next.[2]
- a quest in "Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base. All the upgrade quests come after this one.[2]
- "Tier Upgrades" quest is about better backpacks. Its task accepts any one of the Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack, Diamond Backpack or Netherite Backpack.[2]
Finally, the upgrade quests
Three quests unlock after a quest in "Storage". Each one lists a set of alternative items.[2]
- "Stack Upgrades" quest covers stack upgrades: Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3, Stack Upgrade Tier 4 or Stack Upgrade Omega Tier.[2]
- a quest in "Storage" covers void upgrades: the Void Upgrade or the Advanced Void Upgrade.[2]
- "Pickup Upgrades" quest covers collection upgrades: Pickup Upgrade, Advanced Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade or Advanced Magnet Upgrade.[2]
Which Sophisticated Backpacks config options matter?
4 parts
Almost everything in this mod's server config is at the mod default in this pack. Only two values were changed, and both affect how you get backpacks. Everything is in config/sophisticatedbackpacks-server.toml.[5]
What the pack changed
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance is 0 here. The mod default is 0.5. Mobs never drop a backpack when you kill them.[5]
- server.entityBackpackAdditions.chance is 0 here. The mod default is 0.01. No entity spawns wearing a backpack.[5]
Backpack sizes
Inventory and upgrade slots for every tier are the mod defaults. None of them were changed.[5]
- Leather: 27 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.leatherBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.leatherBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot.[5]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots and 2 upgrade slots.[5]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots and 3 upgrade slots.[5]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots and 5 upgrade slots.[5]
- Netherite: 120 inventory slots and 7 upgrade slots.[5]
Limits worth knowing
- server.nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks is 3. Carrying more than that in your inventory gives you slowness, because server.nerfs.tooManyBackpacksSlowness is true. server.nerfs.slownessLevelsPerAdditionalBackpack is 1, so each extra backpack adds a slowness level.[5]
- server.maxUpgradesPerStorage allows 1 each of stack upgrades, furnace upgrades and jukebox upgrades per backpack.[5]
- server.nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false, so active upgrades like magnet and pickup also work in backpacks you're not wearing.[5]
- server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is false, so on a server you can't open a backpack another player is wearing.[5]
- server.allBlockConnectionsDisallowed is true, which disallows all blocks from connecting to backpacks.[5]
Upgrade numbers
- The magnet upgrade picks up items within 3 blocks (server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange). The advanced magnet reaches 5 blocks (server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[5]
- Smelting speed and fuel efficiency multipliers for the smelting, smoking, blasting and auto-cooking upgrades are all 1, which matches a vanilla furnace.[5]
- The tank upgrade holds 4,000 mB per row of storage slots (server.tankUpgrade.capacityPerSlotRow). The battery upgrade gives 10,000 FE per row (server.batteryUpgrade.energyPerSlotRow).[5]
- The stack upgrade won't stack bundles or shulker boxes of any colour (server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems).[5]
