What is Relics?

2 parts

Relics is an item mod about gear with unique mechanics. The project page describes dozens of relics, each with its own complex behavior, and says they work well on their own, together with other relics, or alongside other mods. The page advertises 28 relics, but it is written for 1.19.2 and later, so I can't confirm that count for the version in this pack.[1]

This pack ships Relics 0.10.7.6, built for Minecraft 1.21.1.[2]

What makes it tick

  • A leveling system plus random stats, so each relic looks different from the others. You choose what you want from a relic, which allows a huge number of relic set combinations.[1]
  • An MMO-like random stat system: you can hunt for the best relics or recreate them yourself.[1]
  • Improvements and customizations for your relics, so you can build your own combinations.[1]
  • A progressive active ability system, which the authors pitch as a way to show off your micro-controlling skills.[1]

Who it's for

If you've finished the main content and want something to chase, Relics is aimed at you. The authors say Minecraft eventually runs out of content and they built the mod to stay fun for a long time.[1]

They also say the mod's balance adjusts automatically to the modpack. That is meant to suit both vanilla-like packs and packs where health and damage reach the thousands.[1]

Tip: The author says an in-game guidebook for Relics is not planned, so experiment with the relics you find and see what each one does.[1]

How do you get started with Relics?

1 part

Relics is a mod about items with unique mechanics. Its project page says each relic gets its own character from a leveling system and random stats, so copies of the same relic can differ. That's what to look for as you play.[1]

The mod page advertises 28 relics. It describes the mod in general, not this pack, so treat that count as the mod's own claim.[1]

What I can confirm about using relics

  • Relics level up through experience points that their abilities earn. The tooltips list the sources. For example, the Bastion Ring earns experience from kills and extra piglin trades, and the Chorus Inhibitor earns it from the distance of its teleports.[3]
  • If you see a message saying you can't work with a relic in the current inventory, move the item to your main player inventory and try again.[3]
  • The Elytra Booster is refuelled by using any combustible fuel that works in a furnace on the relic while it is in your inventory. The tooltip describes this as filling an internal buffer, and the ability then boosts your flight speed while you fly with an elytra.[3]

Unverified The sources here do not show how you obtain your first relic in this pack, or what to make first and in what order. I found no in-pack recipes, quests or guidebook entries for this mod, so I'm not giving a crafting order or recipe blocks here.

How does Relics work?

5 parts

The project page describes Relics as a mod about useful items with unique mechanics. The sources here do not describe any machines, multiblocks, or power, fluid or item pipelines for it, so this section covers the item systems they do describe.[1]

Leveling and random stats

The mod's project page says Relics has a leveling system and an MMO-like system of random stats, so each relic will not look like another. It also says the mod's balance is adjusted automatically to the needs of the modpack. The page advertises 28 relics, with improvements and customizations for them.[1]

The pack's Goat Event script shows what a relic stores. Relic-style items it creates carry a data component with a leveling entry (experience, level, luck and points) and a list of abilities. Each ability has its own stats with an initial value, a research entry with a researched flag, and a points value. For example, the Quantum Bubble rolls a stasis ability with a cooldown initial value of 29.16113, and the Horn of the Wild Hunter rolls a summoner ability with a damage initial value of 3.33686. Both are very rare drops from that event: Quantum Bubble and Horn of the Wild Hunter.[4]

How relics earn experience

In the language file, many relic tooltips list their own experience sources. Examples include experience for each second of acceleration from a movement ability, for mobs killed, for blocks of teleport distance, for seconds of burning fuel in an internal buffer, and for attacks made by the wearer's pet.[3]

Abilities, toggles and buffers

The mod has a key to show the active abilities HUD. Where an ability has a mode or a resource, its tooltip says so. For example, one relic's Faith ability has 2 toggleable modes, Holiness and Unholiness. According to the tooltip, the red Holiness mode steals part of the healing from visible entities nearby and transfers it to the wearer. The blue Unholiness mode deals damage to visible entities nearby based on the healing the wearer receives.[3]

One relic with a boost ability is the closest thing to a fuel system. According to its tooltip, using any combustible fuel that would work in a furnace on the relic in your inventory replenishes its internal buffer. Activating the ability while flying with an elytra gradually increases your flight speed, consuming fuel from that buffer. The buffer size and speed cap are given as placeholders in the text I have, so check the item in game.[3]

Infinite Ham can take potion effects when you left-click it with a potion in your inventory. Each time it is consumed, it applies those effects to the player, and a water bottle clears the last applied effects. It can also be used as a melee weapon that stuns the target.[3][5]

Research

The mod has a key to research the relic under your cursor. The language file also lists a Researching Table marked as removed from the mod, so don't look for one. If you get a message saying you can't work with the relic in that inventory, move it to your main player inventory and try again.[3]

What the pack changes

A pack script changes the food values of Infinite Ham, setting them to 6 and 1. This is the pack's own change to the item, so don't assume the mod's default.[5]

How do you progress through Relics?

3 parts

Relics doesn't have a set of crafted tiers like the Draconic or Just Dire Things gear in the same chapter. In this pack the progression is about finding a relic and levelling it up, so this section is short.[6]

Where the quest book puts it

The quest "Relics" quest sits in the Gearing Up chapter, which is chapter 12 of 22 in the book and belongs to the Forgotten Knowledge group. It describes the mod as adding 25 new and unique items, each able to level up and grant unique abilities.[6]

How you get relics

The quest says relics can be found in loot and can also be bought from the shop. That is the whole path the book gives you, so there's no crafting ladder to follow.[6]

The pack's Goat event script gives one more source. When the event runs, a Quantum Goat spawns near you and drops a reward from a weighted loot pool. Two of the entries in that pool are relic-style items, and both sit at the lowest weight in the table, the very rare tier:[4]

Both drop as brand-new items, with level 0 and 0 experience, so any levelling is up to you.[4]

Levelling and tiers

Unverified The sources I have don't give relic tier names, experience thresholds or what each level unlocks. Check the items in-game, because the pack's quest book doesn't spell this out.

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Relics?

1 part

Relics only shows up in one quest, so this section is short. It's "Relics" quest, and it sits in the "Gearing Up" chapter. That chapter is in the "Forgotten Knowledge" group and is chapter 12 of 22 in the quest book. It holds 107 quests in total.[6]

The chapter's intro quest, "Gearing Up For Adventure!" quest, says the chapter teaches you different ways to craft, enhance and enchant the gear you'll need on your adventures.[6]

What the Relics quest tells you

The quest explains that the mod adds 25 new and unique items. Each one can level up and grant unique abilities. You can find them in loot, and you can also buy them from the shop.[6]

The quest has no prerequisite listed, so it isn't chained behind any other quest in the chapter. Its task is an item task.[6]

Unverified The quest book data doesn't say which specific item the Relics quest asks you to hold, so check the quest in-game to see exactly what it wants.

Which Relics config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.50 guide

Relics is designed so that its balance is automatically adjusted to the needs of the modpack it is in. The mod's description says this lets it fit both vanilla-like packs and packs where health and damage numbers are in the thousands. So you may not need to touch much by hand, but the description doesn't say how this adjustment works in this pack.[1]

Unverified Which Relics config options exist in this pack, and whether the pack changed any of them from the mod defaults, could not be confirmed, because no config files for the mod were available. Check the config folder in your own instance before relying on any specific value.

What changed in Relics between versions?

Relics has been in FTB StoneBlock 4 since 1.0.0 or earlier, and the 1.21.0 release ships version 0.10.7.6 (file relics-1.21.1-0.10.7.6.jar).[2]

The one change the mod's own changelog lists for 0.10.7.6 is a fix for compatibility with OctoLib 0.6.[7]

Unverified Whether the pack's own changelogs changed anything about Relics is not shown in the sources here, so this page does not describe any pack-specific changes to the mod.
