What is Inventory Essentials?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Inventory Essentials is a quality-of-life mod. It adds the inventory controls that have become a standard in modded Minecraft: drag-to-transfer, single-item moves and inventory sorting. It adds no new blocks, machines or progression of its own, so it's for anyone who is tired of clicking through chests and storage.[1]

What you can do with it

  • Control-click an item to quick-move a single item instead of the whole stack.[1]
  • Shift-control click an item to quick-move every stack of that item type. For example, you can pull all the cobblestone out of a chest in one go.[1]
  • Hold shift and move the mouse over items to quick-move them without clicking each one.[1]
  • Hold a mouse button while dragging a bundle to insert or empty items as you pass over them.[1]
  • Middle-click inside an inventory to sort it.[1]

The sorting feature is listed for Minecraft 26.1 and newer, and the pack ships Inventory Essentials 26.1.2.5 for NeoForge, so it matches that range.[1][2]

Client and server

The mod is optional on both client and server. Only the players who want these controls need it, and if the server doesn't have it, it still works for clients who do. The mod requires Balm to be installed alongside it.[1]

Tip: Sorting is a middle-click, so try it on a chest or backpack-style storage the next time your inventory turns into a mess.[1]

Unverified The sources don't show any quests for this mod, or a place for it on the ATM Star path, so there is nothing to unlock. Treat it as a convenience mod that isn't tied to progression.

How do you get started with Inventory Essentials?

3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Inventory Essentials is an inventory tweaks mod, so you use its shortcuts from the start. It adds inventory controls that have long established themselves as a modded Minecraft standard, such as drag-to-transfer, single-item moves and inventory sorting.[1]

It's optional on the client and on the server. If the server doesn't have it, it still works for players who have it installed. It also needs Balm installed alongside it.[1]

Moving items around

Here are the shortcuts to learn first, in a sensible order. Every one of these is switched on in this pack's config.[3]

  1. Control-click an item to quick-move just one item instead of the whole stack (enableSingleTransfer).[1][3][4]
  2. Shift-control-click an item to quick-move every stack of that type, for example all the cobblestone from a chest into your inventory (enableBulkTransfer).[1][3][4]
  3. Hold shift and move your mouse over items to quick-transfer them without clicking each one (enableShiftDrag).[1][3][4]
  4. Space-click an item to move everything from that inventory at once (enableBulkTransferAll). Control-space-click moves one of each item instead (enableBulkTransferSingle).[3][4]
Watch out: The pack sets allowBulkTransferAllOnEmptySlot to false. Space-clicking an empty slot won't move everything, so click an actual item.[3][4]

Sorting and automatic refills

Middle-click in an inventory to sort it. The pack sets inventorySorting to CREATIVE. The other allowed values are CONSOLIDATE_ONLY, RETAIN_ORDER and ALPHABETICAL.[1][3]

The automatic refill features are also on: depleted block stacks get replaced from your inventory (enableStackRefill), and so do broken tools (enableToolRefill). Keep spare blocks and tools in your inventory and you won't have to swap them mid-build.[3][4]

Armor gets a shortcut too: with bulkTransferArmorSets on, space-clicking armor in your inventory swaps to all the matching armor.[3][4]

Check your keybinds

Open the Controls screen and look for the Inventory Essentials category. It lists actions such as Sort Inventory, Dump to Container, Restock Container, Restock Inventory and Transfer on Hover (Hold). Take a quick look there to see what you can bind to your own keys.[4]

How does Inventory Essentials work?

5 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Inventory Essentials doesn't add machines, multiblocks, power or fluids. It's a set of inventory controls that change how you move, sort and restock items in the screens you already use. Everything below is about clicks, key presses and a handful of config toggles.[1]

Moving items around

The mod covers drag-to-transfer, single-item moves and inventory sorting. Each transfer type has its own toggle in the pack's config file, and in this pack they are all switched on.[1][3]

  • Ctrl-click moves only one item instead of the full stack. This is controlled by enableSingleTransfer, which is true in this pack.[3][4]
  • Shift-ctrl-click moves all items of the same type at once, for example all the cobblestone from a chest into your inventory. This is controlled by enableBulkTransfer, which is true in this pack.[1][3][4]
  • Holding shift and moving your mouse over items quick-transfers them without clicking each one. This is controlled by enableShiftDrag, which is true in this pack.[1][3][4]
  • Space-clicking an item moves all items from that inventory at once. This is controlled by enableBulkTransferAll, which is true in this pack.[3][4]
  • Ctrl-space-clicking an item moves one of each item from that inventory. This is controlled by enableBulkTransferSingle, which is true in this pack.[3][4]

In this pack, allowBulkTransferAllOnEmptySlot is false. So if you space-click an empty slot, Transfer All does not move everything. You need to click an actual item.[3][4]

With bulkTransferArmorSets on (it is in this pack), space-clicking armor in your inventory swaps to all the matching armor.[3][4]

The mod also lets you hold a mouse button while dragging a bundle to insert or empty items as you pass over them.[1]

Sorting

Middle-clicking in an inventory sorts it. The behaviour is set by inventorySorting, which accepts CONSOLIDATE_ONLY, RETAIN_ORDER, ALPHABETICAL or CREATIVE. This pack uses CREATIVE.[1][3][4]

Dropping and automatic refills

  • Shift-ctrl-drop-clicking drops all items of the same type at once, controlled by enableBulkDrop. It is on in this pack.[3][4]
  • Depleted block stacks are automatically replaced from your inventory, controlled by enableStackRefill. It is on in this pack.[3][4]
  • Broken tools are automatically replaced from your inventory, controlled by enableToolRefill. It is on in this pack.[3][4]

Key bindings

The mod has its own key binding category, Inventory Essentials. It includes Sort Inventory, Dump to Container, Restock Container, Restock Inventory and Bulk Drop out of Screen. It also has the matching Transfer all, Transfer all of type, Transfer one and Transfer on Hover (Hold) bindings. The default keys aren't given in the sources I have, so check them in your controls menu.[4]

Client and server

The mod is optional on both client and server. Only the players who want it need to install it, and if the server doesn't have it, it still works for clients who do. It also requires Balm to be installed alongside it.[1]

Tip: forceClientImplementation is false in this pack. It forces the client implementation even on servers that have the mod, and it is only useful for development, so leave it alone.[3][4]

Which Inventory Essentials config options matter?

4 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Inventory Essentials is configured in one file, config/inventoryessentials-common.toml. Below is every option in it and exactly how this pack sets it. Most of the quick-move features are switched on, so you can use them right away.[3]

Inventory sorting

inventorySorting decides what middle-clicking in an inventory does. This pack sets it to CREATIVE. The other allowed values are CONSOLIDATE_ONLY, RETAIN_ORDER and ALPHABETICAL, so change it if you'd rather have a different sort order.[1][3]

Quick-move options

All of these are set to true in this pack, except the empty-slot option, which is false.[3]

Automatic refills

Development option

forceClientImplementation is false. It makes the client implementation run even on servers that have the mod installed, and it's only useful for development, so leave it alone.[3]

Unverified The sources show this pack's values but not the mod's own defaults, so I can't confirm which of these options the pack changed. Treat the values above as what the pack uses, not as a list of changes.

What changed in Inventory Essentials between versions?

1 part

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Inventory Essentials at version 21.1.18, using the NeoForge 1.21.1 build. The mod was already in the pack as of 1.0.0 or earlier, so it isn't a new addition.[5]

Version 21.1.18

  • Fixed slots that are backed by a ResultContainer but are not ResultSlots not being ignored. This is the only entry in the mod's changelog for this version.[6]

Unverified Changes to this mod between individual pack releases would be told in the pack's own release changelogs, but the sources here show no entries for it, so what changed from one pack release to the next is unverified.

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as inventoryessentials, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
