What is Inventory Essentials?
2 parts
Inventory Essentials is a quality-of-life mod. It adds the inventory controls that have become a standard in modded Minecraft: drag-to-transfer, single-item moves and inventory sorting. It adds no new blocks, machines or progression of its own, so it's for anyone who is tired of clicking through chests and storage.[1]
What you can do with it
- Control-click an item to quick-move a single item instead of the whole stack.[1]
- Shift-control click an item to quick-move every stack of that item type. For example, you can pull all the cobblestone out of a chest in one go.[1]
- Hold shift and move the mouse over items to quick-move them without clicking each one.[1]
- Hold a mouse button while dragging a bundle to insert or empty items as you pass over them.[1]
- Middle-click inside an inventory to sort it.[1]
The sorting feature is listed for Minecraft 26.1 and newer, and the pack ships Inventory Essentials 26.1.2.5 for NeoForge, so it matches that range.[1][2]
Client and server
The mod is optional on both client and server. Only the players who want these controls need it, and if the server doesn't have it, it still works for clients who do. The mod requires Balm to be installed alongside it.[1]
Unverified The sources don't show any quests for this mod, or a place for it on the ATM Star path, so there is nothing to unlock. Treat it as a convenience mod that isn't tied to progression.
How do you get started with Inventory Essentials?
3 parts
Good news: there's nothing to craft here. Inventory Essentials adds inventory controls rather than items, so you don't need to gather any materials or build anything first. Your first steps are learning a few clicks that make every chest and inventory screen faster.[1]
The mod is described as optional on the client and the server. Only the players who want it need to install it, and if the server doesn't have it, it still works for clients who do. It also requires Balm to be installed alongside it.[1]
Moves to try first
- Control-click an item to quick-move just one item instead of the whole stack. This is handy when you only want a single item out of a chest.[1][3]
- Shift-control click an item to quick-move every stack of that item type. For example, you can move all the cobblestone from a chest into your inventory in one click.[1][3]
- Hold shift and move your mouse over items to quick-move them without clicking each one.[1][3]
- If you carry a bundle, hold a mouse button while dragging it over slots to insert or empty items as you pass over them.[1][3]
Extra helpers worth knowing about
The mod's settings also describe a few more features. Space-clicking an item can move all items from that inventory at once, and control-space-clicking can move one of each item. Picked-up items can go automatically into matching bundles. Depleted block stacks and broken tools can be replaced automatically from your inventory.[3]
Each of these is a configurable option, so a pack can switch them on or off. The sources don't show which ones this pack has enabled, so if one of them doesn't work for you, check the mod's config.[3]
Sorting
Middle-clicking inside an inventory sorts it. The mod's page lists this feature for Minecraft 1.20.1, 1.21.1 and 26.1 and later, and a setting controls how the sorting behaves.[1][3]
Unverified The sources don't say which Minecraft version this pack runs, so it isn't confirmed that middle-click sorting is available here. Try middle-clicking in a chest to find out.
How does Inventory Essentials work?
5 parts
Inventory Essentials doesn't add machines, multiblocks or anything with power or fluids. It's a set of inventory control tweaks: drag-to-transfer, single-item moves and sorting. It needs Balm installed alongside it. Here's how each system behaves in this pack.[1]
Moving items around
- Control-click an item to quick-move just one item instead of the whole stack. This is controlled by enableSingleTransfer, which is on in this pack.[1][3][4]
- Shift-control-click an item to quick-move every stack of that item type, for example all the cobblestone in a chest into your inventory. The option is enableBulkTransfer, and it's on in this pack.[1][3][4]
- Hold shift and move your mouse over items to quick-transfer them without clicking each one. The option is enableShiftDrag, and it's on in this pack.[1][3][4]
- Space-click an item to move all items from that inventory at once (enableBulkTransferAll). Control-space-click moves one of each item instead (enableBulkTransferSingle). Both are on in this pack.[3][4]
- Space-clicking armor in your inventory swaps to all the matching armor. This is bulkTransferArmorSets, on in this pack.[3][4]
- Shift-control-drop-click drops all items of the same type at once, via enableBulkDrop, which is on in this pack.[3][4]
Bundles
Hold a mouse button while dragging a bundle over slots to insert or empty items as you pass over them. This is enableBundleDrag, on in this pack. Picked-up items can also go straight into matching bundles through enableBundleAutoFill, also on in this pack.[1][3][4]
Automatic refills
The mod can also replace things from your inventory for you. enableStackRefill replaces depleted block stacks, and enableToolRefill replaces broken tools. Both are on in this pack.[3][4]
Sorting
Middle-click in an inventory to sort it. The project page lists this for Minecraft 1.20.1, 1.21.1 and 26.1+. How it behaves is set by inventorySorting. This pack sets it to CREATIVE, and the allowed values are CONSOLIDATE_ONLY, RETAIN_ORDER, ALPHABETICAL and CREATIVE.[1][3][4]
Client and server
The mod is optional on both client and server. Only players who want it need to install it, and if the server doesn't have it, it still works for clients who do. forceClientImplementation makes the client implementation run even on servers that have the mod. It's only useful for development and is false in this pack.[1][3][4]
Which Inventory Essentials config options matter?
3 parts
Inventory Essentials only has one common config file, and everything in it is a simple on/off switch except for the sorting mode. Here are the options you're most likely to touch, with the values this pack uses.[4]
Sorting
inventorySorting controls how middle-click inventory sorting behaves. This pack sets it to CREATIVE. The other allowed values are CONSOLIDATE_ONLY, RETAIN_ORDER and ALPHABETICAL, so change it if you'd rather sort alphabetically.[1][4]
Quick-move and bulk options
- enableSingleTransfer is true, so ctrl-clicking moves only one item instead of the full stack.[1][4]
- enableBulkTransfer is true, so shift-ctrl-clicking moves all items of the same type at once.[1][4]
- enableBulkDrop is true, so shift-ctrl-drop-clicking drops all items of the same type at once.[4]
- enableShiftDrag is true, so holding shift and moving your mouse over items quick-transfers them without a click on each one.[1][4]
- enableBulkTransferAll is true, so space-clicking an item moves all items from that inventory at once.[4]
- enableBulkTransferSingle is true, so control-space-clicking an item moves one of each item from that inventory.[4]
- bulkTransferArmorSets is true, so space-clicking armor in your inventory swaps to all matching armor.[4]
- allowBulkTransferAllOnEmptySlot is false, so space-clicking an empty slot does not move all items.[4]
Refills and bundles
- enableStackRefill is true, so depleted block stacks are automatically replaced from your inventory.[4]
- enableToolRefill is true, so broken tools are automatically replaced from your inventory.[4]
- enableBundleAutoFill is true, so picked up items go straight into matching bundles.[4]
- enableBundleDrag is true, so holding click or right-click with a bundle empties or fills it as you pass over slots.[1][4]
Unverified The sources I have don't list the mod's default values, so I can't confirm which of these settings this pack changed from the defaults. The values above are exactly what this pack sets.
What changed in Inventory Essentials between versions?
1 part
All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta ships Inventory Essentials 26.1.2.5, and the mod has been in the pack since 0.0.1 or earlier. The history below comes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]
Mod releases
- 26.1.2.5 (the version in this pack): fixed slots that are not result slots but are backed by a result container not being ignored.[2][5]
- 26.1.2.4: fixed sorting sometimes going wrong when you have several stacks of the same item with different counts. Also fixed a harmless log warning about missing refmaps.[6]
- 26.1.2.3: added "inventoryessentials/extensions" jsons, which let you define additional sortable slots. Sorting also gained support for SlotItemHandler and ResourceHandlerSlot slots, and now works inside Mekanism Personal Storage and the AE2 Sky Chest. It also no longer sends slot click packets when there are no moves to make.[7]
- 26.1.2.2: fixed the wrong slots sometimes being affected by features like CTRL-CLICK, for example in Sophisticated Storage with upgraded slots.[8]
- 26.1.2.1: added new options for refilling and bundles. "enableStackRefill" replaces blocks in your hotbar from your inventory when you place the last one. "enableToolRefill" does the same for tools when they break. "enableBundleAutoFill" puts picked up items into bundles that already contain that item.[9]
- 26.1.0.2: added RETAIN_ORDER, CONSOLIDATE_ONLY and CREATIVE sorting, with CREATIVE as the default in that release. The "enableMiddleClickSort" option was replaced by "inventorySorting", which controls the sorting order.[10]
Unverified Whether the pack changed any Inventory Essentials values between releases is not shown here. The sources do not include any pack changelog entries for this mod, so check the pack's own changelogs for that.
