What is Inventory Essentials?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Inventory Essentials is a quality-of-life mod. It adds the inventory controls that have become a standard in modded Minecraft: drag-to-transfer, single-item moves and inventory sorting. It adds no new blocks, machines or progression of its own, so it's for anyone who is tired of clicking through chests and storage.[1]

What you can do with it

  • Control-click an item to quick-move a single item instead of the whole stack.[1]
  • Shift-control click an item to quick-move every stack of that item type. For example, you can pull all the cobblestone out of a chest in one go.[1]
  • Hold shift and move the mouse over items to quick-move them without clicking each one.[1]
  • Hold a mouse button while dragging a bundle to insert or empty items as you pass over them.[1]
  • Middle-click inside an inventory to sort it.[1]

The sorting feature is listed for Minecraft 26.1 and newer, and the pack ships Inventory Essentials 26.1.2.5 for NeoForge, so it matches that range.[1][2]

Client and server

The mod is optional on both client and server. Only the players who want these controls need it, and if the server doesn't have it, it still works for clients who do. The mod requires Balm to be installed alongside it.[1]

Tip: Sorting is a middle-click, so try it on a chest or backpack-style storage the next time your inventory turns into a mess.[1]

Unverified The sources don't show any quests for this mod, or a place for it on the ATM Star path, so there is nothing to unlock. Treat it as a convenience mod that isn't tied to progression.

How do you get started with Inventory Essentials?

2 parts

Good news: Inventory Essentials is a set of inventory tweaks, so there's nothing to craft first. It adds things like drag-to-transfer, single-item moves and inventory sorting, so getting started just means learning a few clicks.[1]

It requires Balm alongside it. It's also optional on client and server: only the players who want it need it installed, and it still works for a client if the server doesn't have it.[1]

The first moves to learn

  1. Control-click an item to quick-move just one item instead of the whole stack. This is controlled by enableSingleTransfer, which is true in the pack.[1][3][4]
  2. Shift-control click an item to quick-move every stack of that type, for example all the cobblestone from a chest into your inventory. This is enableBulkTransfer, also true in the pack.[1][3][4]
  3. Hold shift and move your mouse over items to quick-transfer them without clicking each one. This is enableShiftDrag, true in the pack.[1][3][4]
  4. Space-click an item to move all items from that inventory at once. Control-space-click moves one of each item instead. Both are on in the pack (enableBulkTransferAll and enableBulkTransferSingle).[3][4]
  5. Shift-control drop-click drops all items of the same type at once. This is enableBulkDrop, true in the pack.[3][4]

Pack settings worth knowing

The pack sets allowBulkTransferAllOnEmptySlot to false, so space-clicking an empty slot won't move everything. Aim at an actual item when you use Transfer all.[3][4]

bulkTransferArmorSets is true in the pack, so space-clicking armor in your inventory swaps to all the matching armor.[3][4]

Tip: The mod has its own keybind category called Inventory Essentials, with entries like Transfer one, Transfer all of type, Transfer all and Transfer on Hover (Hold). If a click combo clashes with something else, check there.[3]
Watch out: Leave forceClientImplementation alone. It's marked dev only, and the pack has it set to false.[3][4]

Unverified The mod's project page describes middle-click sorting on certain Minecraft versions, but the pack's config file has no sort option, so whether middle-click sorting works in this pack is unconfirmed.

How does Inventory Essentials work?

5 parts

Inventory Essentials has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids to set up. It is an inventory control mod: it changes how clicking, dragging and dropping items works in your inventory and in containers like chests. So the core mechanics here are all about click shortcuts, and the pack's config decides which ones are on.[1]

The mod needs Balm installed alongside it. It is optional on client and server: only players who want it need it, and if the server doesn't have it, it still works for clients who do.[1]

Moving items

  • Single transfer: ctrl-clicking an item moves only one item instead of the full stack. This is controlled by enableSingleTransfer, which is set to true in the pack.[1][3][4]
  • Transfer all of a type: shift-ctrl-clicking moves all items of the same type at once, for example all cobblestone from a chest into your inventory. This is enableBulkTransfer, set to true in the pack.[1][3][4]
  • Shift drag: hold shift and move your mouse over items to quick-transfer them without clicking each one. This is enableShiftDrag, set to true in the pack.[1][3][4]
  • Transfer all: space-clicking an item moves all items from that inventory at once. This is enableBulkTransferAll, set to true in the pack.[3][4]
  • Transfer one of each: control-space-clicking an item moves one of each item from that inventory at once. This is enableBulkTransferSingle, set to true in the pack.[3][4]

Details that change the behavior

Transfer All needs you to click an actual item by default. The option allowBulkTransferAllOnEmptySlot would let it move everything even if you clicked an empty slot, but the pack has it set to false.[3][4]

Armor gets a special case. With bulkTransferArmorSets on (it is true in the pack), space-clicking armor in your inventory swaps to all matching armor.[3][4]

Dropping items

Bulk drop lets you shift-ctrl-drop-click to drop all items of the same type at once. It is controlled by enableBulkDrop, which is true in the pack. The mod also lists a separate key binding to bulk drop out of a screen.[3][4]

Key bindings

The mod adds its own key binding category called Inventory Essentials. It includes entries named Transfer all of type, Transfer all, Transfer one, Transfer on Hover (Hold), Bulk Drop and Sort Inventory, plus matching hold modifiers. You can rebind these in the controls menu if the default clicks clash with something.[3]

Sorting

The mod's project page says middle-clicking in an inventory sorts it, on certain Minecraft versions. The mod's language file also has a Middle Click Sort option and a Sort Inventory key binding.[1][3]

Unverified The pack's config file does not list a middle-click sort option, and the sources don't say which Minecraft version the pack uses, so whether middle-click sorting works in this pack is unverified.

Tip: forceClientImplementation is a development-only option that forces the client implementation even on servers with the mod installed. It is false in the pack, so leave it alone.[3][4]

Which Inventory Essentials config options matter?

3 parts

Inventory Essentials keeps all of its settings in one file, config/inventoryessentials-common.toml. Every option in it is a simple on/off switch, and here is how this pack sets each one.[4]

Click and drag shortcuts

  • enableSingleTransfer is true, so ctrl-clicking moves only one item at a time instead of the full stack.[4]
  • enableBulkTransfer is true, so shift-ctrl-clicking moves all items of the same type at once.[4]
  • enableBulkDrop is true, so shift-ctrl-drop-clicking drops all items of the same type at once.[4]
  • enableShiftDrag is true, so holding shift and moving your mouse over items quick-transfers them without a click on each one.[4]

Space-click shortcuts

Development option

forceClientImplementation is false. It makes the mod use the client implementation even on servers that have the mod installed, and it is only useful for development, so you can leave it alone.[4]

Tip: If one of these shortcuts gets in your way, switch off the matching option above. For example, turn off shift-drag if you keep moving items by accident.[4]
